Back from seven days off the grid in the North Maine Woods. No computers, only the river, moose, lots of bald eagles, and the wild.

Wednesday

New thread.

We had our resident eagle expert take a look at the young eagle after we got calls about its unusual posture while lying down. After watching the bird, Joe thinks that it is ok. he suggests that if the bird is "pooping," it's likely healthy, so keep an eye.

I am heading out for northern Maine tomorrow for a week on the Allagash River. I'll preset some daily threads for the period that I am gone.

Wednesday #3

New live video is up here.

Our thanks to My Outdoor TV, and the NCTC tech folks.

Spread the word!

Wednesday Part 2

For a few weeks now we have been working with a FWS partner, My Outdoor TV, to figure out a way to get our eagle cam video out to more folks, with smooth video and sound. My Outdoor TV is a fantastic website that is filled with video programming for folks interested in a variety of outdoor activities, soon to include the NCTC Eagle Cam.

This should solve the shaky video and lack of audio caused by the tight bandwidth.

We will be changing the link as soon as testing is completed. The only difference in what you'll see, besides smooth video and audio, is that you will see the video on a My Outdoor TV site, which includes some ads and a variety of other links. It's a really cool site, and we really appreciate their interest in working with us.

More soon.

Tuesday PM

Here's some relevant information from the Cooperative Extension System.

Usually, 2 (1 to 3) white or mottled brownish eggs are laid after nesting behavior begins. The eggs hatch after a 35- to 45-day incubation period. Both adults hunt and secure food for the young, with the female doing most of the incubating, feeding, and brooding. Young eagles become strong enough to tear meat apart by 50 days of age. They are fully feathered and ready to leave the nest 65 to 70 days after hatching. Although the young are as large as the adult birds at this time, their parents may continue to provide them with food and protection for as long as 3 months after they leave the nest.

Not all eagle eggs hatch, and the death rate of young eagles, as in other birds of prey, is high. Young eagles are antagonistic toward each other and the stronger often kills or causes the weaker to die of starvation. Losses due to exposure, diseases, parasites, and predation occur while the young are still in the nest. Up to 75% of the young eagles die during their first year due to starvation, disease, and causes directly or indirectly associated with humans.

Friday

Fresh thread. Still mighty windy.

I was walking out just after five last night and was able to watch on the NCTC closed circuit some interaction between our eagles that was facinating. The male was on the eggs and the famale came in, talking up a storm. The male got up, flew off. The yelling continued from the female for a few minutes.

When I walked outside, I could see the male perched above the nest. My only thought is that the female was telling her mate to get to work and fond a big fish for dinner. When I left, he wasn't yet listening to her...
