Sheesh, HEAD IS REALLY HURTING!!!

Good morning, everyone.

Raining here. Big storm woke me at 3am with heavy rain, thunder, lightening. Rain supposed to be around all day.

I'm sorry about the osprey. Wish the decision had gone the other way. I suppose I, too, wonder if the bird might have become a "teaching moment."

Off to take care of Sunday business.

Cheers,
Judie

so Norma, how are the grandchildren?

magpie said...

I was thinking too, Mits as we have talked about before on here a lot...if we didn't see the cams i.e. Hugo's and Finney, we wouldn't see it and "feel" the misfortune so much, but still know it was part of Nature...but it is going to be difficult watching things unfold there, for sure. :(

I just to remind myself that
It is What It Is....

Best Wishes for a Great Day for all, hope Market goes okay for Megan, and everyone else's plans unfold nicely.

Have a great day! Enjoy a beautiful Sunday! I shall return.....later!

PA Nana said...

Good afternoon everyone! Is it true about the Osprey at the Finney nest? That being the case I don't think I can watch anymore. I can't even watch the ASPCA commercials on TV. Makes me cry. More sad news. After our storm this AM hubby went out to look for our newspaper and found a dead hummingbird off our front porch on the walk. It was a female and I hope it wasn't feeding young anywhere close. Never did get the newspaper.

Mits said...

yes Finney's chick has a broken leg, they found out when they banded the Finney chicks on the 14th of July.

stronghunter said...

I think that it is true, Diann. One of the chicks has a broken leg--at least that is what we were told. They banded or "ringed" the chicks and put them all back in the nest. From what we have heard, they will not do anything to help the chick.

It is very sad. Makes you want to sneak in and steal the chick and bring it home.

Mits said...

storm headed this way....shutting down for awhile to watch it.

stronghunter said...

Finney chick is sleeping with its siblings now in the nest.

stronghunter said...

From what I understand, that is a man-made nest. I think that it is odd that they will intervene to build a nest, but not to help an injured bird.

magpie said...

Whew! Finally got some pictures posted. Made new link, "Massachusetts" - duh, put them in backwards order, "leaving before we arrived," but, oh well.
Also added Wildflowers pictures (check out the dark dark purple vein on the Morgan Co. Joe-Pye)
and some bird and moth pictures on Feathers, Fur and Miscellaneous.

Aw sheesh, I return home only to find out I now have to add a Bloody Mary!

Still sort of rainy and overcast --gloomy day. Will cheer up later with a nice steak, potato, and salad to celebrate hubby' 72 birthday.

Did get some shrimp so plan to satisfy that craving with garlic sauce and pasta tomorrow night.

Sorry about the hummingbird. Was just watching one outside our kitchen a few minutes ago. So tiny and cute.

I agree it does seem ironic that humans will build a nest but not try to save the little one.

Hope everyone is having a good a day as possible.

GOOD NEWS! POWER TO THE PEOPLE AND THE D.C. EAGLES!

Just coincidence that our district supervisor called a few minutes ago to talk with hubby and I was able to ask her how I might get to J. Moran without causing any prickly political feelings. She asked that I send her an email about the DC eagles and she will make sure Moran gets it. Turns out she lives in his district (I don't). Will send an email by tomorrow morning.

Cheers,
Judie

Hi, Everyone,

HAPPY FRIENDSHIP DAY, and
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, FRANK!

Hope you're all having a good day!
PA Nana, so sorry to hear about the hummingbird. What a shame. :o{ Along those same lines, I'm asking you all to say some prayers for one of my young heron friends. It showed up this morning dragging its right leg, and sporting a broken and dangling flight feather on its right wing. I have a call in to the Rescue & Rehab facility for shore birds in Huntington Beach, but haven't heard back from them yet. The poor baby is obviously hurting, and I would like to try to catch it and box it up, but am afraid I would stress it pretty badly in the process. It's hiding in some thick asparagus ferns, so is relatively safe, but although it can fly, I'm not sure it's able to capture live food. It's right leg won't hold any of its weight, and just drags. It's breaking my heart! May try to find some fish under the trees and put them where it can find them and eat them. Poor little guy! His sibling is nearby on the roof or in the trees, and is totally OK. Any ideas?

ceil said...

Andrea sorry to hear about your baby heron. You have done the best by calling Rescue and Rehab. Call them again. What about the sites we were given yesterday? Are any in your area?

ceil said...

Jo I got 100 on the fifth try. Duh I was doing it wrong.

stronghunter said...

Hi again! Going back out to the 9:40 movie. Got supper at Red Lobster.

Was all very nice until son's ex-ex girlfriend showed up with her family. They were seated right next to us, almost on top of us.

Funny, they requested another table! Son was eager to get out of there!

Mema Jo said...

Delicious!

Check out the Sindey nest Eaglet is back for a visit and is doing nestorations.

stronghunter said...

Did get my margarita tonight! Judy does not have to drink another one for me.

stronghunter said...

. . . Judie.

Judie said...

Hi everyone,

I am soooooo upset! The steaks were awful. Would only have served them with a side order of Fixodent! Wouldn't really matter except Frank offered to go out and I said no, I would like to fix something special for him. Well, so much for that. Next time will be restaurant night. That way I don't have to feel I failed remedial Julia Child. Wish I had chosen cream cheese and olives.

Hi Dana, sounds as if you are getting better each day. Just be patient (no pun intended). You are going to be better than ever before. How's Ed doing? Encouraging there was a positive response for Sen. Byrd.

I wish I knew something to suggest about the injured heron. I guess I would do exactly what you have done -- call the pros.

Shirely, enjoy your dinner with Will. Have a glass of whatever for me.

Back to turn my light out later.
Judie

stronghunter said...

Hi Judie--Sorry the steak dinner did not turn out the way you wanted.

Dana--So good to hear from you again. Good that you are feeling better.

Andrea--I feel like the little heron is my little buddy, too. Hope they come rescue him soon.

I am about to take a nap before going back out to the late movie.

When we came in a little while ago, we were scolded by a little finch. I think there is a nest in the tree by the garage.

Judie said...

Shirley, how uncomfortable for Will and you. I'm sadistic so after they moved to another table I would have requested another table right next to them.

Thank you so much for drinking the margherita tonight! Hope you were both still able to enjoy dinner out together.

Thank you to all those wishing Frank a happy birthday. He was surprised and, I think, a little flattered.

Later,
Judie

Ms Bookworm said...

I'm thinking that I'll probably hear from the rehab people tomorrow. I bet that since it's Sunday, the only people there are the volunteers that actually help care for the birds, and they probably don't answer phones. I looked at the rehab listings from yesterday, and the one in Huntington Beach is closest. That's probably the one I called. Before that I had called a local gal who's known as 'the bird lady of Orange County', but got her husband. He said she wasn't home, and they don't rehab shore birds anymore--just raptors. Have been told you need to be extremely careful when trying to catch herons and the like; they can inflict a lot of damage with their long beaks. I think I'd still like to try to catch him, but he's in some really thick brush, and I don't think I'd stand a chance of getting him without injuring him more.

Mema Jo said...

Andrea I wouldn't try to catch the little heron - he should be safe hiding in the bush I pray. I hope you get a call by tomorrow - You need your mind on the books, gal!

Mema Jo said...

Trying to clean out some of my emails by answering them first and then deleting them.
I have so many folders and find I hardly go back into them... Clutter I think it is called.

BBL

Ms Bookworm said...

Judie, sorry to hear the steaks were filet of buffalo butt! Hope you managed to salvage the situation, and the evening wasn't a total loss!

Thought about calling animal control, but don't want to take the chance that they'd just euthanize the little guy. He just seems to have broken his leg, but can still fly, and if he spent a few weeks in a splint would probably be fine.
Have heard too many horror stories about crossed wires and misunderstood stories by the local animal shelter people to really trust them to help. (Isn't that a shame? That's a whole other story!)

Ms Bookworm said...

Tell me about it, Jo! I've been trying to study, but just can't concentrate. Darn it all, why do all the wounded critters find MY house?!! Wonder if I could figure out a way to put a dish of water out for him. That might help.

Ms Bookworm said...

Decided against trying to put water out for the little guy. His sixth sense is very well developed. Afraid he'd really flip out if I got anywhere near close. But guess what! Keep praying, you guys, because I believe they're working!
The sister/brother of the gimpy guy flew down to him, and is now hiding out with him in the bushes! Hope they brought him food!

Ms Bookworm said...

Our sprinklers will go on shortly after dark, and the heron(s) should be able to get a drink then. The sprinklers reach that flowerbed, but won't go back far enough to get the birds soaked.

Ms Bookworm said...

I'm upset about the Finney chick, too. If they are willing to interfere enough to band the chicks, and they banded the injured one, why in the name of common sense wouldn't they try to rehab it?!! What's wrong with them, anyway? OK, I'll shut up now. (But probably not for too long!) >:o[

Ms Bookworm said...

Well, gotta go get some inspiration for dinner. Or what I mean is that I'm needing to be inspired as to what to have. BBIALW.
P.S.~~Thanks for letting me vent! I feel much better now. :o]

hedgie said...

You can vent anytime, Andrea....we're here!!!! Hope the heron does okay....thin you've made all the right decisions. Isn't that sweet that the sibling is being attentive?!
Judie, sorry about your steaks....but I know Frank appreciated your thought!
Shirley, enjoy your movie.
Hope Margy is getting some shut-eye.
Jo, know what you mean about the folders!!! I really need to do some clean-up, too.
Mits, hope the storm wasn't bad!!

Beauty update: Her upper beak started to grow, which means every time they try to attach the artificial beak the nub has changed. So for now any attempts to attach the beak are on hold. They will do a CAT scan this fall to see what is happening and reassess then.

Osprey chicks are doing fine. Gabby doesn't remember me and is no longer the meek little Osprey chick he was last fall. He is feisty and wants nothing to do with people, which is a good thing!

Andrea, so glad you put a call in for poor little heron. He should be O.K. Will they go to Finland?
Just checked that nest & Baby Boy was eating fish.It was hanging out of his beak, so he finally scrunched down to hold it w/good foot. What a little trooper.Wonder if Ed Clark would go there if a collection was made for ticket??

Yes, Gabby is the Osprey that was sick, had tail feathers implanted and then crashed and cut up his upper wings. He ended up going back to Idaho for the winter.

paula eagleholic said...

LOL, love those eagle talons.

But it sounds like G&T was the drink of the weekend :)

Wonder what the house would look like if we painted it while drinking, LOL.

paula eagleholic said...

That is good news about Beauty. Do they think her beak will grow back? And is Gabby now an educational bird, or will he/she (can't remember) be released?

Wow, Deb, seaturtle.org tracks a ton a wildlife.

When I was driving Janie from the airport on Tuesday, they called from the tracking center and told Janie that they thought Luke was down somewhere near her place. They sent out a search team and couldn't find him anywhere. It was a temporary transmitter problem, thankfully.

They do the tracking on Azalea, from NBG, too.

Hello Busy Eagle Pals

Hmmm, that should be interesting Deb. I wonder if he will head south.

All intersesting info from Deb's Corner of the Wild World !

If you turn your NCTC Cam up loud, you can hear Katydids ! ♫ ♪

magpie said...

I would love to help with the house, Paula

If it is for painting, only dark colored or Yellow paints for me, because I end up getting most of it in my hair, thus, No White !!

paula eagleholic said...

LOL, you are safe Margy...using all whites!

magpie said...

I'm not always certain that my wildflower names are correct, like the Wild Sweet William for example, it could be some other kind of phlox but I finally decided on Sweet William, very much like Dame's Rockets in appearance and abundance, but one more petal and the leaves are opposite rather than alternate. By the way, Dames Rockets around here are known as "James Rockets."

Paula - for you, I would make that exception though...☺

magpie said...

And I had to go to Massachusetts, Deb to see some varieties that I can't find around here. Wanda has Spiderwort, though, beautiful flower, not so pleasant name !

If you have turned your NCTC volume up, remember to turn it back down! ☺

I keep forgetting, we saw a Sandhill Crane tonight! I didn't know for sure what it was, just that it had a long neck!! Janie sees them a lot in Idaho. Roger and Mary missed it, darn. That is the bad thing about Kayaking and trying to get pictures. It is hard to do when you are paddling.

NatureNut said...

Wow, looks like an eagle talon & G &T night. I must be in the wrong place!
At work today, didn't see much wildlife around the pond except the usual---Harry GBH, Squawky green heron, some geese, & a couple fuzzy antler deer.
AND Margy, drove to other side of the pond & the NY Ironweed is in small buds!!!!
Gotta finish up some stuff here.....

magpie said...

Bet it is Deb Either I, or the camera, or both would end up in the water !

Sandhill Cranes....our Genie seems them often in Florida. New York pal saw one with a bunch of Trumpeter Swans over the migration season. Would love to see them in person.
Glad you had a good day !

Glad you saw the Ironweed, Loretta ! It is exotic...

magpie said...

"seems...." sees them often I meant.
I know I was watching a website I think you mentioned last year on them, Deb...now I have to go find it again. Have you checked on the little Kestrel babies? Precious Two !

magpie said...

I better say Good Night to everyone now...your sleep time, my work time coming up

Sleep Sweetly...and dream of all your favorite things, friends.

God Bless Us, Every One

It seems too soon to already be August!
And also it is already 11:00 and my eyes are very tired.
I hope all is well with Megan!

Love all the pictures you are placing in your personal blogs..

Going to close down for the evening after checking what few cams are still active......

paula eagleholic said...

OH, Andrea, just read where you did call the bird rescue. How far are you from Huntington Beach??

PA Nana said...

Evening everyone! I'm watching the Finney nest and see there are two birds in the nest. The one with the broken leg seems to be very alert and is exercising his wings. It did look like he had some trouble eating back a little, but he apparently managed it. Could this bird survive even though he's crippled? He seems very determined to; or is that wishful thinking? Afterall, humans can manage remarkably well with some handicaps. Sure hope so!
Blessings to all - good nite!

deb said...

I saw an Osprey last fall with a bad leg. It was flying well and landing well, but fishing would be hard. It was a migrating Osprey, so it made it as far as Yankton. I sure hope the little one in Finny land nest does as well.

hedgie said...

As always, nice pics, Deb!!!
Paula, bet you are worn out.....get thee to bed!
Diann, when they banded (ringed as they call it) the finney chicks, they said the leg was broken....I sure hope that it heals quickly & w/o deformity and that the chick can then fledge. Thankful that parents and sib are still tending to its food needs.
Loretta...let's hold off on any more rain dances for a few days, okay???
Hope your shift is quiet, Margy, and hope tomorrow is a good day for all.
Prayers and peace. Goodnight.

hedgie said...

P.S. Margy, I love Cracker Barrell, too----what evening are you free???

Good morning! Awaiting Hunter's arrival this morning.

Enjoyed the movie last night. Read all of the comments when I came in, but was too tired to absorb everything, as it was very late.
