Ok, there's about 8 guys in here, we all work together. We found it and we cant stop watching, this is so cool. Tell us, what it's gender, name, the day it was born. We're all excited !! - Alabama boys

deb said...

Hidey, Miracle, Percy and one other name I have forgotten was hatched on March 14th. The parents are Liberty, the male and smaller of the adults. Belle is the female and larger of the adults.

deb said...

Welcome Alabama Boys. We were on the old thread, sorry it took us so long to find you!

deb said...

We don't officially name the young ones, as we don't know whether it is a male or female. The names just kind of evolve. Hidey, the name most of us use, came because she hid from us the first day.

floralgirl said...

Hello:)
Hidey sure looks big today, looks like she's trying to find some shade. Sun is in and out of the clouds here. Radar shows some showers heading at us, may hit the nest or just miss it.

deb said...

That darn wind always has them flapping. I wish Hidey wouldn't flap so close to the edge!

deb said...

I hope the wind didn't give everone a wavy boat ride today.

deb said...

I am headed back outside for more yard work. BBL

We're all interested in how that got that camera there and exactly how high is that thing ? - Alabama boys

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

Good afternoon and welcome to the Alabama boys!!

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

They placed the camera using a bucket truck and them climbing the rest of the way. It is way up in a sycamore tree at the grounds of the National Conservation Training Center in Shepherdstown, WV.

The eagle nest is on the west side of the National Conservation Training Center campus, about 85 feet high in a large sycamore tree, and is about 4 feet across and 2 feet deep, and probably weighs a few hundred pounds. It is made of branches and large sticks with a softer grass and leaf lining. Click on the star to go to the eagle nest live video cam.

ltl said...

Pretty windy on the eaglet today! The whole place is swaying about.

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

By the way, Alabama boys, we love new people to join us on here and love to answer any questions that we can! If we don't know, we will certainly find out for you. We are guessing the eaglet is a female because of her size but it is hard to judge with there being only 1 eaglet this year. Last year and in 2006, we had 3 eaglets.

ltl said...

I have a question, Sharon, speaking of questions--- at about how old does a baby take its first flight?

THE NOC said...

Cool - we keep a constant eye on her/him. We havent seen moma or papa today. We're thinkin about fedex'n a burger for the empty belly. Ya'll have a good one - Alabama boys

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

I think they fledge at around 12 weeks. I know the first year, Spunky fledged on Flag Day and he was the youngest and last to fledge that year.

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

Belle and Liberty have been there today but earlier. We know what you mean about the FedEx thing. We have talked about throwing fish up in the nest, putting a fan on the babies, water mist, stuff such as that.

floralgirl said...

Winds have picked up here, with the showers moving in, about 15 mph.

Mauley said...

Welcome Alabama boys, be careful, the Eagles are habit forming. Mauley Donna

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

Hello Mauley!! You are so right about the habit forming!

floralgirl said...

Too late, Mauley, sounds like the Alabama boys are already addicted like the rest of us!
Heading back outside, showers are closing in on us, moving quickly, but they look nasty.

Unknown said...

Enough with all the wind already..the poor little guy is having a hard time not being blown away!

floralgirl said...

Thunderstorm is closing in on nest. Thought parent would come back into nest to cover Hidey. Wind is still around 15 mph.

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

I do recall that the eaglets love to do their wingersizes when the wind is blowing.

deb said...

That was funny, stretched and flapped her wings, then had to work so hard to keep her balance while she got them tucked back in. I thought we were going to see a poop shoot, but she moved to the side of the nest and used a little privacy!

deb said...

I hear the rain, Megan!

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

Well, I sure do wish a parent would show up at the nest. It is peppering down!

deb said...

All alone for the first time during a rain storm!

Mits said...

love the sound of rain, sure Hidey is fine, probably needs a shower

Mits said...

been doing laundry and trying to fix the verizon email that I messed up last week, of course verizon is not helping:(, got to go to store.

deb said...

Another step in growing up, June is coming fast.

Mits said...

I'm sure parent is close by.

Storm is more to the east of nest now

floralgirl said...

Storm is moving quite fast, almost past nest, then some showers further back behind it. Thunder and lightning here, dog is freaking out.

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

Excuse me Mits, but you left out a very important part of the forecast!

Mits said...

oh sorry, I never usually do it when I do the short current updates from Accuweather.....AMEN:)

floralgirl said...

Adult just flew into nest.

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

Belle just arrived and it looks like with a stick!

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

I don't know what kind of nestovers she just found, but I am surely grateful that is not my supper!

floralgirl said...

Yeah, I'm all for eating leftovers, but those looked gross. Storm almost past here, going back to work. There are some more showers that look like they may hit us later.

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

Well, I have Northern Flickers digging a hole in the tree across the street. You can see the wood chips flying. I also just saw the pair mating, so more will be revealed! :)

Gabriela said...

Oops! What happened/ The eaglecam just went blank! Can anybody still see the nest??

Gabriela said...

Well, now it's back, but appears to be frozen. Eiter that or Hidey is being veeeery still.

Gabriela said...

It's back, never mind! :-)

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

I love the little stripes on Hidey's tail feathers.

Gabriela said...

So do i! I love to see her walking around her nest! And I have to keep reminding myself that the angle of the lens distorts distances because sometimes it looks like she's just about to topple off the nest!!

deb said...

It does do that, Gabriela! It makes you nervous, even when you know there is more room than it looks like.

NatureNut said...

YEE HAW! Wonderful day! The Eaglet_Momsters & Dadster have left the building! (Visitor Center at Pax River Park)

Unknown said...

Hi there, we were just wondering, about how big is this baby eagle?

ILean's Second Chance said...

Hello All,

A friend showed me this live feed and it's addicting. Keep texting my husband telling him what the babies doing. How often does mom show up to do her thing?

TN Gal

deb said...

The eaglet is just a little more than a foot tall already. They average 1 lb. weight gain every 4-5 days.

I am off to the limb drop off. I have been trimming trees.

sara said...

Heidy is alone and doesn't seem to like the strong wind.

floralgirl said...

More showers passing by nest. Adult just flew in.

Ms Bookworm said...

Hi, everybody!
I'm new to this too, Alabama boys. Somebody sent my husband this website, and we've been absolutely hooked for the last 2 weeks. I'm a bird lover from WAY back. My Grandma used to feed birds, and had a real connection with them-- especially hummingbirds. She got me started as a little girl, and it's really stuck with me. I feed the birds (hummers too!) in my yard in Anaheim, CA. For the last 2 nesting seasons we've had a pair of Goshawks nesting in the HUGE (and I DO mean HUGE!) ficus tree in our front yard! The other birds are somewhat spooked by them, and are being pretty careful. The hawks are just gorgeous, but the tree is too thick with leaves to see the nest. Wish we could install a camera like you guys have! I've been concerned for all my birds with the awful heat we've had the last few days. They're all drinking water like it's going out of style. Saw a hummingbird taking a shower in the sprinklers early today. Been having to keep refilling the hummingbird feeder, much more often than usual. Don't worry-- they let me know when it's getting low by hovering in my face! Say, we were loving the weather you guys have been getting-- rain, wind and cool temps. Have been kinda concerned for the eaglet, but 'Hidey' seems to be doing fine, though. Isn't it just miraculous how the parents take care of the little one! ...Wow, the wind sure is blowing there all of a sudden! Is that Belle who just showed up? Looks like Hidey needs rocks in her pockets! Or maybe an anchor. Well, since they're doing dinner, I think I'll go find myself some late lunch. Been busy watering flowers in the back yard, and worked up an appetite. Hope Hidey doesn't decide to spread her wings-- it's really blowing! Catch you a little later....

floralgirl said...

Too funny, adult is in nest cup and eaglet is wandering around nest. Now she wants under adult, but only her head is fitting.

floralgirl said...

Adult finally got up a little, so eaglet could fit under her more. Showers coming at us again, don't look so severe as the last. Wind is still only about 10-15 mph.

Mits said...

lol....Belle looks like a kangaroo

Mits said...

are those Hidey's feesties sticking out from under Belle?

Mits said...

think the Eagle Express might run into some icky weather:(

deb said...

I think it is her tail, Sharon commented earlier about the stripes. That is just a guess, though.

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

Yes that does look like Hidey's striped tail! :)

Mits said...

ok, don't know my head from my tail, I've been told:)

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

Now, Mits, I don't believe that! So glad you are back. I missed you a lot!

Mits said...

I missed you more:).

Mits said...

knew she was getting tired of sitting on her.

Mits said...

did i just hear a burp?

Mits said...

raining again at the nest.

floralgirl said...

This is the last batch of showers, almost past the nest.

deb said...

When the road trippers get home, they are going to be tired! I hope they had a good day and saw lots of fun stuff.

NatureNut said...

Well, the Field Trip Weather Gods certainly smiled on us today.Sun all day, river was calm w/almost no wind until late in the trip. The Eagle Express and Ceil & Mary M left around 4:30. I stopped for gas before 6 PM & rain was coming down in the sun! Further up the road rain, thunder & lightening in the sun also. Now at my house we just had terrific blowing downpour w/hail!

Mits said...

they sure are going to be beat, but bet they did have a great time:)

Mits said...

severe TS warnings have just been cancelled here, we have had rain and some thunder, but not bad at all

ceil said...

Great day everyone at Patuxent. It was so much fun. Greg was our boat and bus person along with Loretta. We had perfect weather. So many pictures taken. On the boat ride Greg did a bard owl call and the owl came into a tree. It made the sound and then we heard the female answer and he took off. Greg said that he was the resident mating person. Wanda held a snappy turtle by the tail. It must have weighed 15 pounds. It was not happy. We stopped by the road to see Loretta's eagle nest and saw the adult and the eaglets popped up to see us. We missed you Mits. I was going to call you from there. Wanda and Gene gave us the perfect lunch. We sat at the picnic table and eat. Sorry to be so long winded.

Mits said...

well sounds like a really fun day, Ceil:)

ceil said...

That's snapping turtle not snappy turtle. It was a great day. Look out Mits. Jo said we are coming to the zoo next.

ceil said...

We ran into some rain on the way home and now it looks bad here. Hope the Eagle Express is ok. I better shut down. Lightening and thunder. BBL

NatureNut said...

Since our boat trip didn't start 'til after 11 AM, our naturalist leader, Greg, was even surprised at the amount & variety of birds we saw. There was a spectacular surprise for all on the boat, but I don't want to spill the beans yet!I'll just say it concerns owls.Normally the best time to look is in early AM.We didn't get back for lunch until 1PM & later went on a ride on the Critical Area Driving Tour where we saw other critters & there was a Wild & Wonderful animal interaction w/Wanda!!!The pics will tell!

Mits said...

poof from nest

Mits said...

sun is shining at the nest.

floralgirl said...

Snappy turtle..I like that:)
Sun is shining here now..pretty outside, but oh so soggy! Peepers are very loud!
I'm so worn out, I could go to bed right now and sleep until ten tomorrow...if only....
Can't wait to see pics, glad the weather was good for the trip!

paula eagleholic said...

LOL Alabama Boys, make that burger very very rare!

Back from the park....

deb said...

It sounds like you all had a wonderful day, can't wait to hear everyone's version. I like the snappy turtle, too! I would love to see a Barred Owl, you were lucky to see one flying in the daytime! I can't wait to see the pictures, but I bet everyone will be pooped when they get home, so we might have to wait until tomorrow.

paula eagleholic said...

Eagle Express is on it's way back to Martinsburg....we snacked all the way back, so no one was hungry for dinner at Cracker Barrel. We pulled into Frederick around 6:45...ran into rush hour traffic...Gene was a great driver!

Suz, Jo, Jenny, Christine and I got off at Frederick to head home...

What a great day....was really glad Greg did the boat and bus tour...we really had a great time...then Gene gave him a tour of the eagle express, I think he was rather impressed with it!

paula eagleholic said...

Sounds like ya'll had some interesting company today on the blog!

paula eagleholic said...

Geesh, I only took 175 pictures!

deb said...

Does Suzanne have to work in the morning? I sure hope she can take the day to recoup!

Mits said...

only 175, geez, Paula, your slipping:).

deb said...

If everyone took 175, we are in for some great photo viewing!

paula eagleholic said...

Suz thought she might be late to work tomorrow!

Megan, we saw a towhee! Twice! Not sure how my pics turned out yet....lots of cameras there...

Mits said...

yea, Deb, get the coffee on.

paula eagleholic said...

Oh, and Loretta's eagle nest has 3 chicks!

paula eagleholic said...

Lib with another huge fish!

deb said...

Dinner arrived in our nest.

paula eagleholic said...

Time for Hidey to eat! The fish is certainly dead...did you see that huge gaping mouth!

paula eagleholic said...

Hidey just made some more room for the fish!

Mits said...

going to start calling hidey....grabby

Mits said...

she spit that one out

paula eagleholic said...

Moving more crib rails in the nest

paula eagleholic said...

Lib gone and back again and gone again!

paula eagleholic said...

Back again with a pine branch

paula eagleholic said...

We saw lots of Osprey incubating....I think all but one opsrey nest was occupied...and there is a new eagles nest on the opposite side of the river across from the visitor center...visible to the naked eye

paula eagleholic said...

Belle at the nest now, cleaning up that fish....Lib is having some bites, too

paula eagleholic said...

Now they are both at the back, Lib is eating a leftover fish

paula eagleholic said...

Lib is getting some bites of fish and feeding them to Belle!

Vic said...

wonderful Family Shot,,,Daddy feeding Momma while Hidey sleeps

paula eagleholic said...

Belle went up into the tree, Lib still on the nest.

deb said...

Sounds like a great day.

I wonder why Hidey isn't eating. Did i miss a feeding recently?

paula eagleholic said...

Hidey is still awake...he is chirping.

Lib brought the fish up front now and is eating it.

paula eagleholic said...

And Belle is back again...fussing over Hidey, moving and digging

Niece and Randy said...

I've watched off and on all day while at work, and I'm not seeing the Oklahoma eaglette being fed? Am I missing it or has watching the piggy hidey spoiled me to thinking they need feeding every few minutes..lol

Mema Jo said...

HELLO from one tired road tripper as Deb says it Hopefully pics will soon be arriving either in personal blogs or in the new Momsters photo album.
Just can't put into words how beautiful this day has been. PERFECT says it all.
We had safe traveling thanks to Capt Gene and the comfort of the Eagle Express. Wanda rode Shot gun so there were no wrong turns! lol
Greg was a fountain of information as we toured the river's edges in the pontoon and also as we toured the grounds in the van. The lunch that Gene/Wanda and others prepared was delicious! The weather was superb the entire time at the park!
The 2 most spectacular events were:
1) Greg did the owl hoot & by golly out came an answer to him from the tree in front of us!!! More hooting was done by Greg and the owl and then low and behold the second owl a few trees away hooted! Then Greg left it up to those 2 owls and by golly the both flew to the same tree!!!
2) Loretta had told us about the eagles' nest on the grounds. Greg stopped the van so we could see it!
Well, they put on a show for us as we stared at the nest. We saw adult fly in and then not one but 3 eaglets were counted! That was the Bestest sight ever!!

ceil said...

Storm has passed. Paula glad you are home. Hope to hear from the rest who are on the eagle express. How could I forget all the osprey we saw.

paula eagleholic said...

Wow, eagle just left...wings right into the cam!

paula eagleholic said...

That was Lib that Left, Cause Belle appropriated his fish for her! She just took it to the back of the nest

paula eagleholic said...

Poof, up she just went!

deb said...

N & R, the eaglets will get fed less often as they get bigger.

Niece and Randy said...

Thank you Deb :) I didn't realize it was older than hidey...I should have I guess since it does seem to be bigger

paula eagleholic said...

Here comes the adult again....in out in out...and could hear the other one up above, still!

I can't find the towhee in the pic I took, but the owl turned out great!

magpie said...

I have made it back and now just waiting to hear that Hedgie is back at her Roost.
I see others have already described some of the wonderful things we saw and did. Greg is a really amazing naturalist, can do many bird songs and noises.
Deb: We saw greater and lesser yellow legs!
and a lot of them
Need to unpack, back in a little while

Rattle rattle rattle at our nest...

ceil said...

Good Jo is home. Hope to hear from Wanda, Gene, Margy and Lynn soon. Probably will not hear from Suz until tomorrow.

Mits said...

I am "happy as a clam" you all had such a wonderful day:)

Mits said...

parent is with the 2 eaglets at BWE, storm warnings for them too now.

Mema Jo said...

WOW!!! Look at the OKLAHOMA wide view
cam #1 - COLORFUL !! Can't get the cam #2 up right now

Looks like it is feeding time there

paula eagleholic said...

Deb, Hidey ate around 7:50 to 8pm

paula eagleholic said...

OK eaglet is younger that ours...by a week I think

paula eagleholic said...

We also saw Vultures, Deer, Turkeys, turtles, Herons, Red tailed hawk, hawk nest...sure I'll think of more

Belle went up into the tree

ceil said...

Jo I have both up. Mom feeding eaglet. Other cam shows dad up on the top.

floralgirl said...

Cool, it sounds like you guys had a great day! Hubby says he saw this motor home going thru Sharpsburg this morning, and it had some sort of eagle sign in it...ha! told him it wa the Eagle Express!

Mits said...

ha, Megan, that is great:)

Mare said...

I've just been tuning in for a little over a week now- fascinating! I didn't get to check in until after dark today and noticed that spotlight on the nest- does that disturb the birds? I know I can't sleep with a light on ;)

magpie said...

Paula and the others have pretty much covered what we saw, I'll throw in one wild turkey, one groundhog, some Forster's Terns, male and female wood ducks and mallards, and a nesting box that probably had wood duck eggs in it, but some barn swallows were very interested in it also!
Loretta was the perfect hostess, Greg the perfect tour guide, Gene and Wanda the ultimate facilitators, Lynn was my trusty reliable chauffeur once again, and Everyone else was Great Company!

Great Chow too....Thanks to everyone involved in this trip, and I hope those who couldn't be with us knew we wished you could...and that you will enjoy our pictures as they get posted

Megan we said HI MEGAN when we turned left at the corner away from your road in Sharpsburg! Hope you heard us ! ☺
xoxo

floralgirl said...

Mare- the light is infared, the birds don't see it.

paula eagleholic said...

Mare - that is an infrared light on the nest...the eagles cannot see it and it doesn't bother them. Only we can see it...

ceil said...

Welcome.Mare the light does not bother them
It is an ultraviolet light.

ceil said...

I think I better close down for the night. I am saying ultraviolet instead of infrared. Snappy instead of snapping. Wait until you see that turtle. Good night all. Pleasant dreams.

ceil said...

Oh by the way let's see if I can get this right. Tomorrow banding of the Norfolk eaglets. 10:00 a.m.

paula eagleholic said...

Since everyone is talking about that snapper....here is our hostess and friend!

Good night.

floralgirl said...

Margy, I din't hear ya yell, but I had the radio blasting!
Cool, Paula, I love towhees, never saw mine in the yard this year:(
Love the snappy turtle picture!

Lolly said...

Hi all! Sounds like you had a fantastic day!! That is so cool. Thought of you!

We arrived home around 3:30 and had the trailer cleaned, including clean sheets on the bed and rugs washed, and back into storage in 3 hours time. We broke a record! Ha! We are leaving early in the morning to go to Joseph's awards program at school. Wanted to get the trailer out of the driveway.

Mits said...

good night Mare:)

Mits said...

awwww, OK mom and dad are sitting on the post above the nest, they always sit real close to each other...

Lolly said...

We left Stillwater as we were NOT in a very good RV park. Not a place to sit out and enjoy and you know I LOVE being outside! It was the only one close to the OK nest.

We went to Lake Thunderbird St.Park south of Oklahoma City. It was wonderful. We had a great afternoon and evening outside, first sitting out and reading, then had a great dinner outside, and then built a fire and enjoyed the evening there.

Lolly said...

Hi Mits! Welcome home!

We had a fantastic time in OK visiting the nest! Also saw three other eagle nests. Be sure to check out my pictures.

Avian said...

Hello! I am new to the blog and the webcam. Can someone please tell me how many eaglets hatched and how many there are now? Thanks!

paula eagleholic said...

Greg thought snappy was about 10 years old...she lost a claw....she might have already laid her eggs..she was one of 3 back on the road at the south end of the park in the restricted area.

Wish all 173 more (you miscounted Ceil, I posted 2 pics :) ) turned out that good...gonna try and crop a couple in the camera...

deb said...

Three eggs were laid, but only one hatched this year on March 14th. There is one eaglet in the nest, until it fledges sometime in early June.

hedgie said...

In addition to all that has been posted...we saw several beaver dams, and several musk turtles! And due to rains and run-off, we saw a sadly huge amount of trash that had flowed into the marsh area....people are so careless.
Thanks with a full heart to Loretta and her co-worker Greg, to Wanda and the Capt. and to all our dear friends for such a great day!
How cool that Megqan's hubby saw the Express!! We also honked at Sandra's on the way back thru' S'town this evening!
Welcome to all of our new visitors.
Anyone else want to take over the dreaming tonight?? LOL!

magpie said...

Okay, Glad to see Lynn is back at her roost....and we will hear from Suzanne Bright and Early Wednesday I hope..

Great Capture of First Mate and Lady Turtle, Paula !

paula eagleholic said...

LOlly, sounds like a great night!

And Welcome back Mits! We missed you!

Whoops...yes, Mits...you have been missed!!! Glad you are home safe and sound! Too bad you couldn't be with us today! Hope you have a good zoo day.

hedgie said...

Just chatted with a friend who verified what I suspected about our blogger "nannydary"--the person we used to work with who uses nannydary as her email IS in FL now....how many people can there be with that nickname from Hagerstown in FL???? It's GOTTA be Doris!

paula eagleholic said...

OH, and Greg also said everything down there is a week to 10 days behind....birds, plant growth, etc.

Lolly said...

I just want you all to know what really made our day yesterday. I think I had mentioned I had never seen a Pileated woodpecker. Well, guess what, we saw one at our campsite yesterday. Have posted a picture on our OK trip blog.

hedgie said...

My face is a little sunburned, Paula...but Mary Margaret and Gene really got it!

Mema Jo said...

I was sitting under the roof of the pontoon so no sunburn! Maybe a little wind burn on the return trip lol

Mema Jo said...

So many new interesting eagle watchers on here today - that is great!

paula eagleholic said...

Oh, forgot I got a video of the owl hooting!

deb said...

I fed your fish, Paula, but Snappy is eyeing them. I think he may grab a few for dinner!

Lolly said...

I am getting very frustrated!!! Trying to get on Momsters to see pictures and I can not get on.

Any suggestions?

I think Jack may have changed some things with Yahoo. I am not sure. I may have to rejoin!

Mema Jo said...

Try again Lolly
I was just adding some photos

paula eagleholic said...

Wow, some great pics in the album!

deb said...

New info at Redoubt:

The eruption of Redoubt volcano continues. Seismicity remains elevated. Clear web camera views show the lava dome steaming and a steam plume rising to just above the summit. Rock falls occasionally occur resulting in steaming further down hill from the dome. Satellite data clearly show a thermal anomaly in the summit crater.

I am not sure what a thermal anomaly means, but it doesn't sound good to me! I'll have to research that.

deb said...

There is an Osprey in Finny on the Water nest.
