Item in the paper explains that the purple boxes we see in the trees here in the panhandle are to trap the "emerald ash borer"--an Asian native that damages and kills trees. Now we know, Wanda and Margy!!!

BWE UPDATE...

Nest Update

05/05/09:
We've updated the Eagle Cam Web Log with a new post that talks about what will happen once our eaglets take their first flight.

Also, on Wednesday, we saw an eaglet mantling or spreading its wings over prey to hide it from others -- a definite sign of maturity.

paula eagleholic said...

Hey, someone sent the sun here!!

:):)

ceil said...

Hubby just called. He has a flat tire. Did not know it until he got to the drug store. He changed it. Did not want to wait for AAA's. He has to go to work. Talk later. Phone ringing.

paula eagleholic said...

I'll look for that email address to myoutdoortv....re - the sound.

Red - so glad you could stop in. Wish the O2 was working better for you, but glad you are able to be up and about. Take care, we miss you on here.

Mema Jo said...

Sun just popped out here too!
WHoo HOoo! Likewise concerning Lolly, Lynn!

karen said...

Hi everyone,
I just found this site a few weeks ago and we have been watching every day. This is quite a site for a city girl. Do you know how old the eaglet is and when he might finally take flight?

Mits said...

your welcome, sun left here...

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

Welcome Karen. Hidey hatched on March 14 and we are pretty sure the fledge will not be until probably the first or second week of June.

Mema Jo said...

Welcome Karen! Is the sun shinning in your neck of the woods? Glad you are going to join us - ask away with your questions! Plenty of informed Eaglet Momsters on here!

hedgie said...

It is What It Is.

Hope everyone IS and WILL BE doing well today

magpie said...

Hedgie See your comments about the purple bags. Think they should have been Emerald Green instead..☺

hedgie said...

Neat, Margy. Maybe we need a field trip to Sleepy Creek!

magpie said...

Here are a couple of things of local interest for the Eastern Panhandle :

May 8 and 9, 9 am to ?
Berkeley Springs State Park (right in downtown BS)
The Morgan County Master Gardeners Annual Plant Fair -
Hundreds of plants for sale, and there will be a garden education center and a special children's area

May 9, Boydville in Martinsburg, 10 am to 4 pm The Berkeley/Jefferson Master Gardeners will hold a plant and book sale for Heritage Day, books will be sold at bargain prices, and heirloom tomatoes and pepper plants will be for sale

Megan: Will you be at market Sunday in Shepherdstown?
You are our #1 Master Gardener!

magpie said...

Hedgie I had been told that there is a pair of Osprey at Sleepy Creek near the Lake, cannot verify that, but I would like to check it out, that is one place I would not go to alone...
Maybe in a few weeks...we can check it out - I'll try to check with local DNR and see if they know

Costume Lady said...

WELCOME KAREN! We are in a majority here in WV. I have to stop and count just how many of us are West Virginians!

Costume Lady said...

Hi, Margy...glad you are leary of going to Sleepy Creek alone! Field trip would be good:)

magpie said...

On and Off for me this morning, go to head out for a little while, then back to work tonight at 6 pm...

Good Morning Everyone! Grey here, but NOT raining!
Put some new pics on blog of E & O nests at the Park, etc.
Gotta hit the trail...later4

paula eagleholic said...

OK, I thought everyone could use a bit of sunshine...

Costume Lady said...

I think an Heirloom tomato is from back in our grandparents day, when they had such a wonderful flavor.

floralgirl said...

Yep, heirloom tomatoes are from older seeds, 50 to 100 years old, often handed dowm thru generations. Non hybrid tomatoes, many colors and shapes. Brandywine is a well known variety.

ceil said...

Thanks Paula and Wanda. I looked all over the page. Info.Duh.

paula eagleholic said...

Pretty, isn't it Mits.

Did they say they had 2 males at NBG...I can't recall

Mits said...

I think that is correct Paula.

paula eagleholic said...

Some NBG banding info

First and third chicks are the males, middle is the unknown...looks to be female to me by the weight, I would think...maybe they will find out later in their DNA analysis.

paula eagleholic said...

Same here on the feed.

NBG finally got out from the middle of that mess of eaglets...they certainly tried, LOL

Eagle-Eyed's Sissy said...

Hey eagle buds! Out of work for the moment, hate when that happens!

Laynie said...

Can someone help me with a little info? I have been watching this site for a few days, as well as a few other Eagle cams. Is it me, or is this a neglectful mommy?? On the other cams, the moms are there often... on this one, this poor little guy is alone most of the time! OR... is it because he is getting older?

Mits said...

it is because he is getting older, parents are still close by, it is a big tree, and she/he has to start leaning how to eat on its own, parents will start soon dropping fish in the nest. eaglet is 8 weeks old this saturday

Eagle-Eyed's Sissy said...

Hi Laynie! No, Belle and Liberty are the best parents ever!! Hidey is getting older and learning to be more self sufficient, practicing exercising her wings and getting ready to fly for the first time in a few weeks. The parents are very attentive to her/him and bring food frequently, even still try to shield him/her from the weather.

Costume Lady said...

Very good Sissy! You should be working for NCTC!

paula eagleholic said...

Eaglet was just sunning his wings...bet that sun feels good.

Getting a little static on my feed. Is anyone's sound back on?

paula eagleholic said...

Laynie - click on my name and scroll down to the eaglet momsters blog. I posted pics from a visit to the nest last Saturday...shows both parents in the tree watching over the eaglet...we just can't see them on the cam.

Costume Lady said...

Oh, and Helen, too!

Our Mommy is the best, as well as Dad (Lib) in the animal kingdom. We have often remarked as to how dedicated they are:)

Eagle-Eyed's Sissy said...

And to think, I am a newbie compared to you guys!! Ya'll are good teachers!

Costume Lady said...

Mom (Belle) layed on her eggs until she had about an inch of snow on her back, during a snow storm.

Laynie said...

OH... thank you for your quick response all! I am so very happy to hear that she is well cared for. My maternal instincts kicked in and I hated seeing her alone so much. I did see mom shelting her last night in the rain. Is that an optical illusion from the fence down below, or is that next secured with a perimeter fence?

Costume Lady said...

Yes, Paula...that is an excellent photo for our Newbies to see when they think our Hidey is all alone. They are ever watchful. Glad you got that photo. Super!

Eagle-Eyed's Sissy said...

Great pics Paula! I wanna be just like you when I grow up!

paula eagleholic said...

The illusion on the left and front of the nest are buildings. A Barn on the left, and a house around noonish.

The area is only fenced off by signs...although there is fencing around, it has more to do with property lines than eagles.

hedgie said...

Paula, love your bright avatar!
Welcome, Laynie. Ha--my sisters' best friend in HS was named Laynie!

deb said...

Lunch time, I mowed a little, but not enough to get yucky. I wanted to do more, but it is humid out, so I had to quit.

paula eagleholic said...

Hidey is eating more of the 'Thing' from yesterday...but he's in the blob....so hard to see again, what the 'steak' actually is!

hedgie said...

Called Lolly....she sounds awful...coughing very deeply...has NOT been to Dr. yet...I strongly encouraged her to go. Says she has just been laying back with her eyes closed and hasn't felt like touching the computer. Says she will call Dr. and let us know how she is. Thanked us for the Silver Alert!

paula eagleholic said...

Howdy Deb...have a nice rest of your lunch hour!

paula eagleholic said...

Thanks, Lynn. Hope she heads to the Dr soon, gets some meds and gets on the mend.

Laynie said...

Thanks Paula... pictures are great. I love that picture with mom and dad perched together nearby! Awesome! Great job.

Hedgie... rare name, I know! :) I don't know a whole lot of other people with my name.

Laynie said...

Hmmmm... why is Hidey's "meal" fuzzed out? Is it an R-rated meal?

hedgie said...

Laynie, there is a smudge on the camera lens that has been there for several days...we don't know what it is...suspect that since it hasn't washed off in all this rain, it will be there til fall when they do another tree trim and cam adjustment.
Where are you located?

Laynie said...

Thanks for the info Hedgie. I am from NJ. I've taken up bird watching and photographing over the past few years and love it. Because of it I have fallen in love with the large preditory birds. We have some eagles in South Jersey but I haven't been there yet to get some pictures.

Lolly said...

Hey! Lynn put a smile on my face and a warm fuzzy feeling inside!

I feel horrible and just want to lay around and do nothing. I am coughing less but it is yukky. (no fever!!!)

Called and I am going into the doctor in the morning. Thank you, nurse Lynn!!!!

Getting off again, so I can close my eyes and possibly nap. Take care of all the lil eaglets for me!

Mits said...

feel better soon, Lolly

Costume Lady said...

Lolly and Helen, take care and feel better soon:)

Going to GeeGee's No Silver alert needed:)

cp12 said...

Hi, I am very new here. Why is there a blob on the screen?

Mits said...

not sure, could have been from a poop shoot from eaglet

hedgie said...

Welcome, cp12.
Lolly, thank you for getting a Drs' apptmt.!! I feel better now, LOL!
Mits, how are YOU doing today? Any news from the zoo?
Had to redownload Flashplayer again...couldn't get our live cam up...okay now.

hedgie said...

Parent startled Hidey on arrival....got a good look at her/his tail feathers!

hedgie said...

Mantled as if protecting or hiding something from mom or dad! Gone just as quickly as arrived! No food.

Mits said...

about the same, Lynn, could not go to zoo today, been watching Mei, she has not moved from the spot since last night, never have seen her stay in one spot this long ever

GA-GIRL said...

WOW, HIDEY SCARED ME, thought he/she was going over the side...I guess that would be fatal.. huh???

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

MFM, it wouldn't necessarily be fatal if she fell off but it certainly wouldn't be good. Hopefully, we could get her placed back in the nest if there were no injuries. I was watching when she was doing that too and thought for sure she was going to do a backward fall.

Mema Jo said...

Not Fatal - about a dozen of us local yocals would be speeding down to NCTC after calling the Main office to go pick up our Hidey! She probably would have flapped herself to safety. Only brush under the tree.
We really do get scared at times! It will continue to get scarier as she practices her wing exercises and jumping.

cp12 said...

I thought she was going to fall as well.

Thanks for the welcome.

hedgie said...

Not necessarily, MFM. Imagine that instinct would cause her to spread her wings and maybe catch a little air for a softer landing. Of course, we would notify the folks at NCTC if that happened and they would rush to her side. Two eaglets were thrown out a California nest last year by a predator and it was seen on cam---terrible attack---but viewers alerted the officials and even tho' they were further away than ours are, they got there and rescued them.

Mema Jo said...

I am trying to keep a cheat sheet of bloggers names and the state from which they come!

cp12 & MFM what are your states?

hedgie said...

Could staying put for so long be a good sign of pending motherhood, Helen?

GA-GIRL said...

thanks so much for all of your answers. We are of the faint of heart in this office. I dont know if we could continue to watch if something like that happened. I hear mom on the nest at HI. I assume that she is calling her mate for food/relief.It that right and have they had food today. Again we are worried

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

Poor Mei had to lay down to even potty! Bless her heart!

GA-GIRL said...

MINE IS GA. THOUGHT ABOUT CHANGING MINE TO GAGIRL. DIDNT KNOW IF I COULD GET IT DONE

Mits said...

yes, Lynn it could, have not seen her eat, which is another sign, looks like she is waking up now, sure they want to clean her den

Mits said...

they go potty even when they are sleeping

Mits said...

ha, Hidey is playing with a leaf

paula eagleholic said...

parent in nest eating behind the blob!

paula eagleholic said...

And parent gone...

Rain is a comin...probably in time for rush hour/evening...don't think I'll be mowing tonight...

Mits said...

well good, Mei is up and eating a carrot.

Mits said...

now eating some bamboo

paula eagleholic said...

Lots of long wing stretches today....

Mei is on cam 1

hedgie said...

Paula, finally got SnagIt downloaded properly and it WORKS!!!! Haven't figured out how to send out a video yet, but haven't gotten any captures worth sending yet, so will figure it out when I do!!

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

I have a pileated woodpecker in the drama tree and a squirrel peeking around the tree at him. He is huge!

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

Seems like they would get a headache beating on trees like they do. There are pieces of bark flying everywhere!

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

Too bad he can't take care of the starling! :)

hedgie said...

Won't do that, Shar, but he'll sure take care of the tree!!! If it's a healthy one, scare him away!!! I've always wondered why they don't get headaches, too!!!

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

Well, that smart feller knew to peck from the side to keep a big piece of bark from falling on him. It looks like he might have hit paydirt!

hedgie said...

Did you take the pic just now????
I had one earlier out on a stump, but couldn't get camera fast enough!

hedgie said...

Wind is really picking up here...not good with the gorund as wet as it is.

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

No, Lynn, I don't even own a camera. I steal all my pics on line. The main part of this tree is dead but there are a couple branches that still have leaves.

Mema Jo said...

Beautiful pileated woodpecker! They really do get large!

hedgie said...

Mits, hope that every day is a lot better for you...when is your next shift scheduled for? Mei better wait for you!!!
Forgot the date of MM's surgery...???

Mema Jo said...

The dead trees are where they go!

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

He really must have hit paydirt in this one spot because he keeps pecking and turning his head to the side, munching down!

GA-GIRL said...

WHAT IS HIDEY EATING.I SEE HE IS USING HIS TALONS.........

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

Jerk neighbor let his dogs out and they chased off the woodpecker.

Mema Jo said...

Good question MFM! I wish I knew. It has been there for some time & I don't know that it has been ID'd. It sure looks like a piece of paper!

paula eagleholic said...

Wow, that does look like they finally unearthed what was under the smudge....

I think that was Hamburger or steak in the nest...sitting in one of those styrofoam containers!!

paula eagleholic said...

Not really sure if that is styrofoam or paper...but seems like they were scavenging for sure!

LaCarp said...

Yesterday it speculated that Mom filched a sandwich from somewhere. It was hard to tell because of "the blob". Now it looks like the empty ziplock bag is all that's left. Hidey just dragged it out into clear view. I'm sticking with my sandwich theorem.

paula eagleholic said...

I could agree with that but ziplock bags are clear, not white. It is clear that it was pilfered from somewheres!

paula eagleholic said...

Unless of course, it was a deli sandwich wrapped in paper....:):)

I personally like the thought of them swiping a steak of off someone's grill.

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

Oh, wow, that would be so funny, robbing neighbor's grills! Easy catch!

LaCarp said...

Avian petty larceny.

paula eagleholic said...

Last year and year before, at the Puleston osprey cam, the osprey kept bringing in koi and goldfish to the nest. They were obviously robbing someone's pond!

paula eagleholic said...

Now that piece of whatever looks more like a plastic bag....

magpie said...

Sigh..more rain's a'coming, and maybe a storm brewing, sprinkles here now.

Hope everyone has a Good Evening !

Hidey is there all right! Being tented over by Belle from the rain! We just started another cloud burst!

Sherrill - in which state do you live?

Costume Lady said...

Sherrill, it was really pouring a short while ago at the nest. Hidey is always sheltered by Lib or Belle when it rains hard. You are from WV, c orrect?

momsmiley said...

Ahhhh...thanks!!! I'm so relieved!!! Yes...I do live in WV...Fayette County as a matter of fact!!! Eagle-Eyed Sharon and I have been e-mailing each other!!! That's why I cried out for their help..LOL!!!!

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

Ms Bookworm said...

HI, EVERYONE! Just now catching up with e-mails & blogs. Have been SO busy with laundry & housework today! Don't know quite what hit me. LOL :o] Believe it or not, I am envying your rainy weather! It's about 82 and sunny here in SoCal. Supposed to be 84 or 85 tomorrow, hot thru the weekend. Only trouble is, hot weather makes me wilt! Mema Jo, thanks for the link to the Beatles' 'Here Comes the Sun' this morning!! It certainly made my morning, and what a NICE blast from the past!
Looks like it's still raining there... at least our Hidey has some company! By the way, if that really is a ziploc bag or plastic wrap in the nest from yesterday, is Hidey in any danger if she eats a piece of it? Doesn't sound like it's good for eaglet innards! She seems really smart, though-- probably wouldn't mess with it. Routine job for her guardian angel! Oops-- hubby's home. I'll BBL! Take care... :o]

Redoubt is building again, they changed their message today, but haven't changed the status back to red yet.

Seismic activity remains elevated, with nearly constant volcanic tremor detected at the summit. Ongoing rockfalls have re-mobilized small amounts of ash into the air at lower elevations around the summit.

An explosive event could occur at any time with little or no warning. AVO continues to monitor Redoubt's activity 24/7.

paula eagleholic said...

Hidey is now clearly visible....Belle had him covered really well!

I don't think they will eat the paper/plastic. It's been there since yesterday....they have eaten what's in it!

Going to dig into the paperwork tonight...

Looks like the rain has stopped at the nest.

paula eagleholic said...

Drying off wing flaps now, standing at the launchpad, backwards!

paula eagleholic said...

The launchpad is right were the smudge is! I think that's paper! Hidey's wings just blew it around in the nest!
