both O's at Finney's feeding the chicks...

Eagle-Eyed's Sissy said...

I only see one, which Finney, water or land. I always get them confused when ya'll talk about them.

Mits said...

Finney nest is the land nest. Suzanne is the one that named it that long before I sent her the Finland water nest.

Mits said...

the 2nd O did not stay long.

Mits said...

they are getting the cake ready for Tai

Eagle-Eyed's Sissy said...

Yep, there it is!!

July 9 is Tai Shan's fourth birthday!
Tune into the web cam at 8:30 a.m. to see him get a special frozen treat, a behemoth “cake” made of water, bamboo, shredded beets, and beet juice. The icy masterpiece will be topped with a sculpted “4.”

Good morning eagle budlets. I am watching Tai with his cake this morning. So beautiful. He is standing up at it now. Dropped and piece and going after it.

Eagle-Eyed's Sissy said...

He is going to get his apple. What a bear!

Lynne2 said...

OK, got it now, but I missed the birthday boy!

ceil said...

That is one smart bear.

Mits said...

the bear like his apples...

Mits said...

his momma did not raise a dummy:)

Lynne2 said...

hahahahahaha!! back to the bamboo!! He's adorable!

Lynne2 said...

wish I could walk away from a birthday cake after a few bites and go back to the salad!

hedgie said...

Morning all!
Happy Birthday, Tai! looks like bamboo is more to his liking than the fuitsicle cake---acts like he's not sure what to do with it!
After all my complaining about the "new" neighbor...gotta say he surprised me this morning....went out to get papers and he was mowing...he rode over and asked if I wanted him to mow my road frontage! I accepted graciously. It was done the weekend before mom came, and isn't bad yet, but will look better if he does it for me regularly. SIL's bro did it w/ weed-eater, but this youngster is brave enough to use the mower on the bank like Bill used to do!

Mits said...

bear knows what is good for him:)

Mits said...

hope they let Mei and Tian in the yard for a go at it.

Lynne2 said...

morning Lynn! So glad to hear your chest rads were clear!!!

hedgie said...

Sissy, have I seen the name Casto related to your family somewhere??? If so, is Ripley anywhere close to you?

Eagle-Eyed's Sissy said...

No Lynn, not Casto, Crisco! Ripley is about 2-1/2 hours from here.

Lynne2 said...

what a ferocious Hidey!

paula eagleholic said...

MOrning, all.
you can now see that there is an ealget in the nest!!

hedgie said...

Hi, Lynne! Thanks! All of the prayers here did the trick---what an awesome group we have!!

paula eagleholic said...

What a beautiful sight...

Was gonna say Shirley, you can now see the leaves at noon in the nest...but now Hidey is in the way!!

hedgie said...

Sis, knew it started with a C and ended with an O...LOL!!!!

paula eagleholic said...

Hidey is so loud, I can hear him here at work! Parent was in the nest first....don't really see any fish...yet...

paula eagleholic said...

Lynn - glad everything is A OK

Jo, glad the Germany gang made it back safely.

Margy, when do you leave?

paula eagleholic said...

Hidey is still screaming in the nest...adult must be nearby, and Hidey must have be on the fish that we can't see.

Lynne2 said...

Hidey doesn't know it, but he is singing along with Johnny Cash on my computer this morning!

Lynne2 said...

fish in talon, saw it on landing

paula eagleholic said...

Now mantling the prey at 2ish

paula eagleholic said...

Thanks, Lynne2

Lynne2 said...

...I keep a close watch on this fish of mine.....

Mits said...

Tai is back to the cake.

hedgie said...

Local man found shot in head in DC last night---did not survive. Probably drug related.
Worker fell into a vat of chocolate and was killed at a candy factory....Hershey maybe? Didn't catch where.

hedgie said...

What in the world is Hidey hollering about?? Whiny baby!!

paula eagleholic said...

Hidey still peeping at adult :):)

paula eagleholic said...

"It's Mine! All Mine!"

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

There has to be a parent in the tree. This child is so vocal.

hedgie said...

Sounds like adult nearby, flapping.

Lynne2 said...

Hidey says " I'm not cleaning this nest, I am not going to fishing school today, I'll see that fiesty chick if I want to and you can't stop me"

Lib and Belle, meanwhile, are sitting in the tree saying to each other " I hope someday he grows up and has childern JUST LIKE HIM!!"

paula eagleholic said...

Time to eat!...sort of...

paula eagleholic said...

Eating and warning parent to stay away! Love it!

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

Squirrel out here just heard Hidey and took off like a bullet.

paula eagleholic said...

That's too funny, Sharon.

hedgie said...

A half-smart squirrel, Sharon!! Knew the sound was a warning...just a couple hundred miles too far to be a danger!

paula eagleholic said...

Darn 15 minute timer!!

paula eagleholic said...

This Saturday will be 6 weeks since Hidey fledged.

ceil said...

I'm back. Sharon we have a white faced squirrel with a beautiful white tail that comes to our yard.
My neighbor hates all animals. He told his wife to put the nuts out in the alley. I said why they climb up on your fence to eat them. He is Mr. Clean. Good neighbor most of the time. Drinks to much.

ceil said...

Such sad news about the Memphis elephant.

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

I showed Tom my cedar waxwing last night and he told Sissy it was a yellow-tipped mustard bird. So funny. He is good at giving alternative names for stuff. An Alberta Clipper is an Abergail whipper.

hedgie said...

Critters here seem stirred up today...squirrels are jumping around like crazy; robin is chasing a jay; neighbor dogs are all barking...maybe one of those unfelt seismic things going on---there was a very minor quake a few days ago near Richmond....Shirley, did you know that??

paula eagleholic said...

Hidey enjoying the fish now, but still warning parent to stay away!!

Eagle-Eyed's Sissy said...

That is awful about that baby elephant!

paula eagleholic said...

What happened to the baby elephant?

hedgie said...

So sad...Paula, the mama elephant accidently gored the baby while trying to herd it to another area. Vets were not able to save her. My heart aches for them all.

hedgie said...

Cute story.....a JFK runway was shut down yesterday when 78 turtles emerged from a nearby bay and crawled onto the tarmac. Diamondback terrapins disrupted flight traffic for nearly 2 hrs. Maybe they were headed to U of M!!!!

stronghunter said...

Good morning!

Nice long visit from Hidey. Don't suppose we can expect many more.

Very sad about the Memphis baby elephant. They showed the mother her baby so that she would understand and know that they didn't just take her baby away.

No, I did not know about the earthquake in Richmond. Felt one in Culpeper several years ago. It was very strange.

I see the leaves at 12:00--I just thought there was some kind of critter under one of the leaves. It may have been the wind, but there was something white under one of the leaves that kept moving around and looked like it was eating on the leaf. It would be hiding right now if it is still there.

My grandson is spending the day. We are going swimming this afternoon.

Eagle-Eyed's Sissy said...

I thought she sat on it! OMG!

stronghunter said...

Squirrel on my back porch doesn't seem too bothered by Hidey's squeals. Don't know why.

paula eagleholic said...

Hidey still eating the fish...think he'll eat the whole thing!

hedgie said...

Shuttle Endeavor is scheduled for liftoff at 7:39pm Sat. Hope for good weather!!

paula eagleholic said...

Beak cleaning...looks like Hidey is done, but still fussing!

stronghunter said...

My squirrel friend is not bothered even by those loud squeals. The tv is on; maybe that makes a difference somehow. So much noise that he just ignores it.

paula eagleholic said...

Oh, sad for sure about the baby elephant

stronghunter said...

Male and female cardinal at my feeder.

Checked out the eagle nets in VA site last night. There is one nest in Spotsylvania County, another one down in Caroline County, not too far from King's Dominion.

Really interesting site.

paula eagleholic said...

Hidey must not have finished all the fish,,,,still fussing at parent.

Mema Jo said...

I wonder if we could ever classify Hidey as a 'song bird'!

stronghunter said...

Thanks, Paula, for the Eagle Nest site.

I think my squirrel doesn't know what an eagle is. Might get eaten someday.

ceil said...

Don't think so Jo. They would throw him off America's Idol. LOL

Mema Jo said...

I wish we could have some feed back on our '15 min idle' as to if it really saved $$. It is a royal pain!

ceil said...

Off to the bank and store and then am getting hair cut today. Have a great day everyone.

paula eagleholic said...

Look at that nice full crop...wonder how long he'll stay? Been here about 1 1/2 hours!!

Mema Jo said...

Hard to find our panda - camis moving all around outside.

Mema Jo said...

Have a good cut Ceil
I go around 1 pm....

stronghunter said...

Hidey does look full. Maybe s/he is just sitting there digesting.

stronghunter said...

Then again, maybe Hidey wants another fish . . .

hedgie said...

More like a squawk-box, Jo!!!
Cool site, Shirley--thanks. Took a little searching but found the info on Tues. quake....10 miles from Richmond, 45 from you!

stronghunter said...

I got the info about the VA nests from Paula's link yesterday. If you register, you can go into Google maps and zoom into individual nests. It took me awhile to get registered, but finally did.

I think these people would be interested in the St.Elizabeth's nest situation if they do not already know. Haven't explored fully, but it does have a "contact us" link.

Lynne2 said...

we had one near us several years ago...didn't know it was a quake, just heard some loud noise like a convy of 18 wheelers rolling down the street. It was very strange to hear, and I later found out about the quake.

Oh my Gosh, so glad to see Hidey this morning. It's been sad looking in on an empty nest. Have been enjoying all of your comments and sites that you put in for me. We had a busy fourth at Lake Wateree and had lots of fun.I took my last trip to see the fireworks on the lake though,. So many boats out there the pontoon felt like it was going to turn over on the way back. I'm getting too old. Hope the lady that had the surgery is o.k. I haven't had time today to read all the comments.Everyone take care. Love, Gwen

Good morning, everyone! This will be long but, I hope, helpful.

I have been advised that the more people who bombard an agency the more likely to get attention.

Department of Interior: Donna Margelos at donna_l_margelos@ios.doi.gov (202-273-3413)

Fish and Wildlife Services: David Eisenhauer at david_eisenhauer@fws.gov (202-208-5631)

Destruction of an eagle nest may be illegal if in violation of the Migratory Birds Act of 1918 (although it might be questioned regarding eagles as migratory).

My friend is also a contributor to the VA statewide birdlist and will be submitting a notice regarding the potential destruction of the D.C. nest. He also suggested contacting the Audubon Society, the Sierra Club, and not to forget about the Department of Homeland Security, itself. The more people who draw attention to this the more likely we can save the nest.

It was wonderful to see Hidey for a few minutes today. Wishing everyone a lovely afternoon.

hedgie said...

Glad you had a good weekend, Gwen. Have wondered what you were up to! Sounds like a scary time on the lake! Next year, watch from shore for sure!!!

stronghunter said...

Judie, you have been busy! Thanks for all of the information.

stronghunter said...

Since the Secretary of the Interior watches our nest, shouldn't we contact him as well?

hedgie said...

Thanks, Judy. Will definitely start writing more letters. The more contacts, the better!
I do think that there needs to be a point of clarification: the article does not specify that the nest tree will be destroyed. It says that 12 acres of trees in the protected habitat will be, which could drive off the eagles because of loss of hunting territory. There is also concern about how much noise they would/could tolerate in the area. We don't want to mislead anyone in our efforts!

Lynne2 said...

Judie, great info and thanks for the great work!
I think Lynn is absolutely correct in reminding that the habitat will be destoyed, not the tree itself for when we write our letters.

deb said...

Lunch time here. We got dumped on big time here this morning, Yankton got 3.67" of rain, we didn't get that much, but haven't heard an official total yet.

Eagle-Eyed's Sissy said...

Keep it out there Deb. We want some summer weather for awhile!

deb said...

I am just glad it is moving out of here, not sure where it is headed after Iowa and Minnesota. I think we have had about 6" of rain this week, time to dry out.

hedgie said...

If anyone wants to copy or just for your info, this is the text that I am using in my letters:

Are you aware that there has been a Bald Eagles nest on the grounds of the old St. Elizabeth's Hospital within the city limits of Washington, DC that has been successfully hatching chicks since 2001??? The government is planning to build a new Homeland Security complex at this location and the Federal Highway Administration is planning a new roadway into it that will destroy the forested habitat that protects and nourishes these eagles, our national symbol. Please help fight this unnecessary intrusion. There are other viable access areas. Eagles tend to adapt well to human proximity, but they cannot survive if their habitat is destroyed. Bald Eagles have been removed from the Endangered Species list but they are still protected by federal law. This plan makes one wonder how serious the government truly is in their efforts and responsibility for so doing.

Hi,

Thanks for the clarification which, I agree, should be taken into account when contacting others. I got confused and absolutely do not want to mislead anyone, especially if they are trying to help! As for Secretary of Interior, I wasn't able to find an email/phone but absolutely think he needs to know about this.

As a federal government action, there will have to be an environmental review

The sun was setting, but one camera is aiming right at it---so an irritating view. The other is a better angle for sun in evening.
I'll try to post it later---laundry in dryer. Just found out we're getting company Sat. Eve or Sunday. They are passing thru from TN to PA. Don't know when or if they will spend the night, so will have to fix up EVERYTHING!!!! (I think last minute stuff is rather rude :>0 )
