BWO update....good morning Bob:)

08/26/09:
Photographer Bob Quinn has posted new photos of Blackwater Refuge.

Of particular interest: 1) a shot of Braveheart on the cam arm; 2) a shot of the new osprey nest; and 3) vultures in a tree with an immature eagle.

Good Wednesday 'hump day for some' morning to all! It is a beautiful day and I get to have lunch with Alexis & her other Mema once she is finished meeting her teacher.
Suz sent pics from Finland and right now the nest is empty.. I guess Koo has found a comfy place. Life is good!

Go out and get some sunshine !!
Or take your Vitamin D tablet!

keeping a close eye on a developing storm north of Hispaniola

Mits said...

sounds like a re-run of last weekend....

If an area of low pressure, currently 350 miles to the north of Hispaniola, develops into Tropical Storm Danny, rough surf is likely to return to the East Coast later this week. The storm will bring wind and rain as well, as it brushes the coastline from North Carolina to Maine.

While the system will most likely remain offshore, the coastline could still get battered by dangerous waves and rip currents. Wild waves and rip currents were responsible for two deaths last week as Hurricane Bill churned offshore along the coast.

Hey There Photographer Bob! Bet you wish you had won the lottery last night and didn't have to be at work today! Don't we all. I have not checked my ticket yet. I might be able to give you a loan after I do........
Hello - grannyblt - I don't think I have your email - please click on my name and touch base with me.

NASA is targeting space shuttle Discovery for a launch attempt Friday morning at 12:22 a.m., mission management team Chairman Mike Moses said. Engineers will evaluate a liquid hydrogen valve that developed problems during tanking operations Tuesday evening. Detailed test data about the valve will be examined before Discovery’s fuel tank is loaded with propellant ahead of Friday morning’s launch attempt.

Just peeking in to say Good Morning. Good breakfast on the patio. Then did a little yard work before coming in. Over 100 yesterday and expected again today. Where is Fall? Time for a temp. break!!!

Megan....yes!!! I'll be your neighbor! Wouldn't that be neat?!

So, Thursday evening we head to Mits...with food and wearing our jammies.

Wanda, you were busy on facebook last night...loading videos. I yelled at Sharon, should have yelled at you as well, sorry! Hated for you to miss the fun.

Shirley, about time those posters went up (and down!). Get with it, Girl! We need a picture of your classroom and the poster on the floor.

Deb...thinking of you today. Have fun!

I am off to walk and then into the kitchen to do some clean up. I am so tired of the heat....staying indoors most of the time.,

Prayers for Dana, Sam, and Janie!

Apologies to Buddy, sorry we blamed you!

HAVE A GREAT DAY!

ground hog at PIX-PA

hedgie said...

Bob, missed the one-legged egret on first look...went back and saw it when looking for it! Wonder how long he has been surviving with his "disability" and how he compensates? Do they catch more on the fly or when standing in the water? They are probably beak catchers rather than talon, tho', right?

floralgirl said...

Better that rodent is at pix PA than in my garden.

Mits said...

got that right, Megan....

floralgirl said...

Although one of his relatives is out there somewhere and I am trying to catch him. Elusive buggers, hard to trap them. One of them ate a whole 30' row of marigolds to the ground, but it was the last thing he ate.

Mits said...

I love marigolds....my Dad had them in out little garden in the city

floralgirl said...

One of my favorites, grow a really neat variety called Simba. Great cut flower.

Mits said...

got a pic....oh guess not critter got them:(

floralgirl said...

Critter only got one row, we planted them several places, just for this reason. Simba

Mits said...

sure are pretty, Megan....love the name:)

floralgirl said...

Yeah, me too, They almost look like a mum, very unusual and large flower. I grow other varieties also, but it's definitely my favorite.

hedgie said...

Norma, just for the heck of it, decided to refresh my memory on the Byrd machine......if I ever knew it, must have forgotten---Harry Flood Byrd was born in Martinsburg!!

And his brother was the polar explorer Byrd! Really don't think I knew these things! My brain isn't that far gone to have forgotten such interesting info.

A 35-year-old man from Britain thought his days of excruciating pain were over when he underwent an appendectomy on July 7 – but it turns out doctors never removed his appendix at all, London's Daily Mail reported.

As a result, a month after the procedure, Mark Wattson collapsed when his appendix ruptured.

Wattson claims doctors at Great Western Hospital in Swindon, England told him the surgery was a "success" when they discharged him the first time.

However, on August 7, Wattson was taken back to the same hospital by paramedics and doctors told him his appendix had burst. He would need "another" emergency appendectomy.

"I couldn't believe what I was hearing," Wattson told the newspaper. "I told these people I had my appendix out just four weeks earlier, but there it was on the scanner screen for all to see."

Wattson underwent another surgery in which his appendix was finally removed.

"I have no idea what they did take out, but I want to find out what went wrong," Wattson said.

Paul Gearing, deputy general manager for general surgery at Great Western Hospital NHS Trust, told the Daily Mail that the hospital apologizes if Wattson felt "dissatisfied with the care he received."

"you betcha he is dissatisfied with the care"

Bob Quinn said...

The one footed egret was standing in the shallow water when I first spotted it. It was catching small fish by snapping them up with a quick stab in the water. I've actually seen them get a fish stuck on their beak.

hedgie said...

Ironically enough, Byrd died of a brain tumor, also. His politcal endeavors were almost completely opposite to Ted Kennedy's.
History lessons for the day complete...no tests, kids!

floralgirl said...

Phew...I'm terrible at tests.

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

Me too! I can't even pass a blood test! :) But - I can pass a drug test! :)

hedgie said...

Poor guy, Mits.....of course, tonsils can grow back...maybe his appendix did, too!! LOL! Makes me think about Tom and his "repeat" gallbladder tests!

Hi everyone,

Back from dentist and got a good report. Now have bright shiny teeth. Turns out, dentist wanted to be a forest ranger but says dental school finally took priority. Gave him the website for Belle & Liberty because he is interested in watching.

Good afternoon!

Okay, Lolly, got the poster on the floor and the others on the wall. They are a bit different from kindergarten posters.

I have one about banned books. Interesting list of books that have been banned, including The Canterbury Tales--shocking woman, that Wife of Bath, not to mention "The Miller's Tale."

Will work on posting some pictures.

stronghunter said...

I see a blue screen, but hear interesting sounds.

magpie said...

Yup, I waited long enough to open up, and both screens are Blue....
Thanks Paula for sending the word to Steve...

Good Afternoon Everyone. What day is it ? xo

magpie said...

That Simba Marigold is a jewel, Megan - but I sure am enjoying my marigolds here...they keep on blooming ! As do the snapdragons, and the Rudbeckia is full of flowers !

magpie said...

I have a wonderful little book given to me by a dear sister:

The World According to Mister Rogers, Important Things to Remember

It's a Jewel also !

magpie said...

Interesting remark by Judie about her dentist....
Wish I had gone to school to be a Forest Ranger...think I would enjoy that more right now than being a 9-1-1 Dispatcher !
Bet the smile is stunning, Judie ☺

floralgirl said...

I wish I would've been a park ranger too.

magpie said...

So....where is Ceil today ?
Too much cake and partying, or resting up for the Jammie party Thursday night ?? ☺

floralgirl said...

I'll look for her in the blue van...

magpie said...

Well, Megan -
You make a Great Garden Ranger!

magpie said...

So the birds made another Royal appearance this morning, that's great!

We are still hanging in there on the ratings for Beakspeak for yesterday and the last Seven days.
That's Loyalty to go with the Royalty ☺

floralgirl said...

Yeah, but I think the salary and benefits are better as a park ranger....

magpie said...

I would have to play hooky to attend the Jammie party, so I bequeath my cake and fun to all the rest of you to be divided up equally...no squabbling now, friends!

Going to have to miss the Launch too unless I can sneak out at exactly the right time.

Lynn you might have to call 9-1-1 to let me know if the launch goes off ☺

ceil said...

I'm here. Just got home from work. Getting ready to go out to dinner again tonight. Still celebrating MM's birthday.

magpie said...

Great Ceil !
I think Birthdays are forever, especially for Special People and their sisters! xo
Have Fun !

magpie said...

Wow, Bob's new pictures are beyond beautiful. Thought all those turtles was a centipede for a minute...especially since it was the next one after the dragonfly.

Thanks Bob !

magpie said...

Should be fun if T-Bird makes a visit today....Buddy deserves a few extra treats for taking the heat for those comments ☺

and I think Wanda must be working double-time for taking the day "off" yesterday...then again, she might be headlong in making plans for someone special tomorrow ♥ ☺

magpie said...

I can hardly sit much less stand or walk today, something amiss with the back, maybe too much time on concrete floors shopping with the grandson yesterday. Might need one of Shirley's bar stools for work tonight.

Disappearing for awhile,
TTFN xo

magpie said...

Wow, the kestrels are gone already!

Thinking of Deb, Janie and Gabby right about now...

stronghunter said...

Okay, I posted some pictures of my school and my posters. I am documenting my need for a scooter or some skates to get down the
loooong halls.

I hope Lolly approves. I could never match the kindergarten teacher.

stronghunter said...

Live cam is back on.

magpie said...

I lied! I didn't disappear, glad I didn't.

Thanks for the Live Cam alert, Shirley - Still is back on also!

Your new pictures are Great !

Thanks Steve and myoutdoortv.com and all the powers that be for restoring our viewing pleasure with the cams !

stronghunter said...

Need to head home. BBL.

hedgie said...

Margy, so sorry to hear that your back is giving you a fit again. Ice and heat!! Can you take both to work with you??
Yea, cam working!
Jim, I can't even get Atlanta up for some reason....but have never tried it in full screen.
Shirley, going to look at your pics...

hedgie said...

Love the Shakespeare, Shirley! Yes, you DO have a l-o-n-g trek....definitely at least a skate board!!
Can't believe that The Canterbury Tales are banned! It was always one of my favs!

My girls both had a successful day--first day for high school and middle school. No one got lost. Only one "mean" teacher each!!

Judie said...

Back for a quick catch-up. Strange, felt fine until about 30 minutes after getting home from dentist -- starting feeling kinda puny.

Shirley, great pictures. Love the posters! You rock! Want to borrow my wheelchair to get around those halls -- would be especially fun on the ramp.

Maybe we all need one of Shirley's barstools.

There was a Byrd family of VA -- I think park of the WVA family but not positive.

Yep, Lynn, no cavities -- must be the G&Ts that kill germs and stuff.

Hope Dana did well today. Anyone heard from her, yet?

Hope also that Deb did well with Gabby.

Cheers,
Judie

hedgie said...

Was out watering the flowers a few minutes ago....FINALLY saw the momma wren in the nest in the impatiens. Saw the solitary egg a couple of days ago; now she was on it. She flew off so I was able to water underneath the nest.

hedgie said...

Judie, we were talking about Robert Byrds' friendship w/ Kennedy this morning...and mentioned the VA Byrd machine and no relation between the Byrds...so wanted to refresh my knowledge and looked up VA Byrd...only to find out that he was born here in Martinsburg! Also learned that his mothers' nephew (his cousin), who was a local resident in his later years (and one of our Washington Post paper customers)had been pushed by him to run for pres at one point, to no avail.

Judie said...

Oh, almost forgot. I still like Diego because it sounds more panderish for when he/she gets big.

Judie

Mits said...

I think Diego is much more dignified for a Giant Panda.....:)jmho....

floralgirl said...

Yeah, and if you change his name now, how will he know when you're talking to him? ha ha ...oh I must be punchy from the heat.

Mits said...

exactly, Megan...:)

Mits said...

oh Danny Boy could be problematic for me this weekend...keeping a close watch...

Mema Jo said...

Just checking in before getting dinner. Lunch with Alexis was great.
She is very talkative and excited about her 1st day at Pre-K tomorrow.
She was going to shoe store for new pair of sneakers with her other Mema.

Lolly said...

Hi all! Kitchen is looking good. Doing serious cleaning and did a re-caulking behind the sink and under my window.

SHIRLEY!!!! Love the pictures. Now we know where you are each day! Love the hidden classroom. LOL Your Shakespeare poster rocks! Also love the posters on the wall.

Diego definitely! Now, I love
Chrissy, but Diego is perfect!

Margy, Margy, Margy....so sorry about your back. Been there, done that and it is NOT fun. Ice, ice, ice!!!!

Forgot to tell you. The hummingbirds are thick now. Usually in Aug. we have two that are ever present, this year more. So much fun! While working in the kitchen one got a drink for a small feeder there. I was inside inches away. Such teeny tiny feet!

I know you said no fighting, Margy, therefore I claim your share of the fun and someone else can have your cake!

magpie said...

You guys Rock! Thanks for ice and heat advice , been doing both since I got up...will take both to work!

Okay, Lolly...sounds very fair!

Good report Lynn
Will pray that the meanness turns into kindness very soon! Bless their hearts, your grandgirls!

Your report sounds great too Mema Jo ! James got a very "boss" pair of sneakers yesterday, will have to try to remember his exact words, but he was beyond excited !

Better say so long now, clock is ticking.

Best wishes for a great evening, punchy or otherwise!

God Bless Us Every One

See you all in the morning sometime
xoxox ☺ ♥

Mits said...

we used to buy our Christmas trees from these people, they have a place on Mass Ave in NW DC and out in Potomac and Chevy Chase, need less to say they were extremely expensive...

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - A Fraser fir from West Virginia will be the Christmas tree displayed inside the White House this year.

Tree farmers Eric and Gloria Sundback were selected this month as grand champions of the National Christmas Tree contest.

It's a record fourth win for the Sundbacks. Their trees were displayed at the White House twice during President Ronald Reagan's administration and once under President Jimmy Carter.

The Sundbacks have grown Christmas trees since 1956, including the past 50 years in Shepherdstown, about 80 miles northwest of Washington.

A team will pick an 18- to 19-foot tree from several candidates on the farm to be prepared for the White House's Blue Room.

(This version CORRECTS that the couple has lived in Shepherdstown since 1959, not 1956.)

I was just getting ready to post the same info, Helen! Great minds........

Have to look in bookstore for the book for it--the shipment had BETTER arrived by now! Class is from 5:00-10:00pm. Glad I don't have a class tomorrow! Hope you guys all have a nice evening!
Prayers for all, and I'll catch up and talk to you tomorrow. :o]

roller skates would be fun, Shirley

stronghunter said...

It is a nice thought, but I am afraid it would be frowned upon by the administration.

Probably dangerous, though. I haven't skated for many years.

stronghunter said...

floralgirl said...

Did someone say roller skates? Brand new key♫♪♫

Lolly said...

I do not make a "Texas Sheet Cake". Never heard of it. LOL Wonder what it is, most assuredly something we call by another name. So funny!

Going to make crab cakes for supper. Had grilled salmon the other evening and have green onion sauce left over.

stronghunter said...

Rest assured that my students study The Canterbury Tales. We read “The Pardoner’s Tale” and “The Wife of Bath’s Tale” right from the textbook. I have had students go online and find some of the other tales. The big question in “The Wife of Bath’s Tale” is this: “What do women want?” That always gets their attention.

floralgirl said...

Glad to hear that, never been a big fan of banning books. High schoolers can certainly handle the topics brought up in the Canterbury Tales.

ceil said...

Evening all. Just got back from another dinner. Went with Helen's dil mom and dad. She does make a great Texas sheet cake. I don't make it because I would eat the whole thing.
Shirley you sure do get your exercise. you need a scooter.
Bob love your pictures as always.

stronghunter said...

Happy that my pictures were enjoyed. It was fun taking them.

I still have to find a few more of my posters. They are somewhere around here. I know I will enjoy the new posters. I bought them in part for myself. I spend lots of time in that room--more than anybody else.

Banned books is a topic the school is going to explore this year, so I was naturally drawn to the poster. It is a little hard to see on the poster, but one of the books is a Harry Potter story. Don't remember which one, but I am sure it could be any of them.

floralgirl said...

Is Harry Potter a banned book in school?

paula eagleholic said...

Evening, all!

stronghunter said...

Loved the song, Megan.

floralgirl said...

That song has bben stuck in my head all day, now it will be stuck in yours:)
My kid's english and drama teacher often sends home a permission slip telling parents that students will be reading a book that may contain 'adult' topics and form must be signed for student to read book.

stronghunter said...

Banned and Challenged Books

I did not see the Harry Potter books on this list, but I know that some people object to them.

floralgirl said...

Some good books on those lists.

stronghunter said...

Mits, I am keeping an eye on the weather and thinking of you. We got chased out of Myrtle Beach by Hurricane Charley several years ago. Hope this one does not come close.

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

Okay, so I have been home from the meeting about 20 minutes and I have a Brand New Key and I suck at killing flies on the redneck playstation!

stronghunter said...

We would lose a lot if we did not have those books. You also have to think that many of those books would not have even been written if the bans had been successful in keeping the books from the public.

T-Bird said...

Good evening all my fine friends.

floralgirl said...

I hate that redneck playstation game, I had to delete it. Apparently I also suck at killing flies.

stronghunter said...

Sharon, I am confused. I think I get the key thing, but not the fly-killing thing.

floralgirl said...

Well hello Thelma:)

T-Bird said...

Sorry about the messages last night. I don't know what I was thinking. I'll blame it on Buddy.

: )

stronghunter said...

We are happy to see you here, Thelma.

Mits said...

hi ya Thelma....now don't go blaming our Buddy:)

Mema Jo said...

Shirley, I survived Hurricane Charley in OC that year! Our son, Charley, and family were with us - his wife bought t-shirt with I survived Charley on it!

Hi T-Bird! How's it going?

T-Bird said...

Hello Megan

T-Bird said...

Hello MITS-I'm sorry, okay I can't blame Buddy.

Mits said...

Shirley it came thru on the momster mail....redneck fly catching, I deleted it too....I think it cheated....some of my flies no matter how many times I hit them, would not die...lol

floralgirl said...

Aw....I'm telling Buddy!

Mits said...

yes that is 2 of us watching Danny, what ever it does, it will bring dangerous surf to the coast again this weekend...sure lifeguards are not happy....

ceil said...

Thelma don't blame Buddy. He is a good dog.

stronghunter said...

We bailed out of Myrtle Beach just ahead of a mandatory evacuation and drove north for hours in pouring rain. As we got closer to home, the warnings on the radio got less menacing.

Got a refund on the last day of our visit because of the mandatory evacuation.

and Buddy loves hot dogs:)

stronghunter said...

Will have to check the mail. I don't get it during the day at school. Some nights I am too tired.

Mits said...

well it is just wait and see right now....all the computer models are having a hard time wondering where it is going....

ceil said...

Well looks like Buddy is in the clear. We all agree wasn't him.

stronghunter said...

I have to say that basset hounds have feet that are too big to type just three letters. It would have been a whole mess of letters if Buddy had done it.

ceil said...

It will probably stall and come next week

ceil said...

Shirley you are right. Buddy does have big paws and he loves hot dogs.

stronghunter said...

I have made up my mind to wear my Crocs tomorrow. My legs are not so tired tonight. May have to go out and buy several more pairs.

Ceil, Buddy is a good scapegoat. He doesn't talk back. Well, that is most of the thing.
Shirley, you sure are right.

ok, just can't believe this story....give me a break!!!

RICHMOND, Va. — An executive for an anti-animal cruelty group says her 16-year-old blind and deaf dog died after she accidentally left him in her hot car for four hours.

Robin Starr, the CEO of the Richmond Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, says she didn't realize "Louie" was in the car until noon. Starr's husband, Ed, told the Richmond Times-Dispatch he put the dog in her car as she got ready for work Aug. 19. She often took the dog to work with her.
Robin Starr took the dog to two clinics, but he died of kidney failure.

The National Weather Service says the temperature had reached 91 degrees by noon that day.

The board of the SPCA says it still supports Starr, who has been CEO since 1997 and does not plan to resign. It was unclear whether she would be charged.

Basset hounds love every kind of food. Sassafras ate anything we dropped on the kitchen floor, and she managed to knock quite a few things onto the floor. Hot dogs would have been at the top of her list, too.

I saw that story earlier.

How sad, Mits.

They call it counter-cruising in basset hound circles. Sassafras is the reason I have a bread box. Can't say how many loaves of bread she ate.She could also catapult a pizza box right off the counter.

Kathryn encountered her basset eating spaghetti sauce out of a frying pan one night. The sauce was boiling.

Good night all. See ya in the morning light.

I have to call it quits for the night. I will see you tomorrow.

God bless.

Shirley, never had a dog to eat out of my skillet, but had a grandaughter to eat out of the garbage. Really had to keep an eye on that one:)

Good thing my dog can't reach any counters.
Nite Thelma and Shirley.

Good night Wanda. You were in my thoughts. Buddy was kinda the topic of conversation and boy wouldn't he love to have one of your hotdogs.

I swear, we have to hang stuff off the ceiling to keep Buddy the Basset from getting it! Love him though and he loves sleeping with his "Sissy". I am Sissy too by the way!
