THANKS STEVE...STILL CAM ISN'T WORKING??

Costume Lady said...

Shirley and Judie, I do hope the two of you can meet and take photos of the eagles being released and don't forget to take photos of each other. I KNOW you will both have fun:) Then, you can tell us all about it. Your photos don't have to be PHOTOGRAPHER QUALITY...we will get the jist of the event even if you use a disposal camera!

Costume Lady said...

HEY, YOU ALL...I left the door open and the flies are coming in. HURRY, HURRY on over:)

Costume Lady said...

OK...no one is going to join me...I'm going back outside. Need to get some more milkweed for my 3 little itty bitty caterpillar.

stronghunter said...

Brought this over from Wednesday thread.

Got lost there for a minute. Got knocked off the blog and could not get right back on.

I had not realized where the eagle release would be. I don't see any reason I can't be there. I have a small digital camera I am just learning to use.

I would love to meet you there, Judie. Maybe together we can figure out how to take some pictues. I've never downloaded anything from my camera to the computer. Might want to try that today or tomorrow.

Hunter, George, and I have been painting the living room. Say a prayer for us! (If I can paint a room with an 8-year old and a cat, I can do anything!)

My first comment seems to have been eaten by the blogger cop. If it shows up somewhere else . . . oh, well.

I see the blog is back...looked weird there for awhile!

Have a great afternoon, folks!

Costume Lady said...

Oh, one more thing...those of you who couldn't find my photo of Nu fixing the nest cam...it is now the very first photo on my blog, WILD AND WONDERFUL.

Costume Lady said...

Shirley and Paula, glad you two came in the door, hope you closed it....I have flies EVERYWHERE;)

floralgirl said...

Wow, the humidity is fierce today.
Hope you guys get to the eagle release. Should be great to see in person. Pictures or not,you should go experience it. And it isn't that hard to download pics from cam to computer, I'm sure you can do it.

stronghunter said...

I just need to practice. I have been taking pictures. They have to be in there somewhere. I might try reading the instruction manual.

Grandson is so into painting, he won't even eat ice cream. Says that his daddy says butter pecan is no good.

stronghunter said...

Heading back to paint.

Judie said...

Shirley and Paula closed the door but then humidity decided to show some attitude and opened it again while you were outside.

I would love to meet you Shirley. What a joy to look forward to seeing my first eagle release and meeting you. I'll be back later with some identifying info.

Judie said...

Back again,

I notice at the West End nest both eaglets seem to have a red feather area on the wings I can see. Anyone know if that is just the light reflection or actual color? Curious. Never seen that before.

Judie

stronghunter said...

Judie, I have noticed that on some of the other birds. Sometimes there is a number on the wing. I think it is some kind of identification.

stronghunter said...

Can't stay away from the living room long. Hunter is painting away.

paula eagleholic said...

It's a wing marker that is placed on the eaglet when they are banded.

Houston, we have a HATCH!!
Finally, saw both wrens bringing tidbits to house. I thought these eggs were duds, but finally at least one!I've been trying to get a current pic--very tiny tidbits!

Suddenly it's pouring here.

paula eagleholic said...

WE had a downpour earlier today...thunder too!

magpie said...

Yep, we got rain in Berkeley County too. Windshield wipers seem to have forgotten to go fast!

Not enough, grass is turning brown, but it has taken a long time to do that so I guess we have had a better year than some others.

Saw Ed and Dana at the post office!
Told Ed I could have saved my 44-cents and just handed a card to him ☺

They both looked wonderful, after five hours of running around they were headed home! Hope to see Dana hop on a little later...

I'm tired after running around and staying up too late, so off to you know where for you know what for a little while

Hope everyone has a good afternoon, rainy or not.

xo ☺

magpie said...

Wanda Glad you hopped on, I was wondering about you today.

Lynn - when James and I went to Frostburg in February to see my brother and his model trains, James was totally fascinated with the Cut ! Would like to work another trip in before it's too late, thanks for the update. Glad you and Christie had a nice evening.

oh shucks a typo.
Wipers seem to have forgotten HOW to go fast...

Judie said...

Ah, Paula, thank you for the information. Now I know my eyes are okay. Shirley, when Hunter finishes your place, send him on down here.

Very brief rain shower. Not enough to do any good. Need more, much more.

Lots of wrens in our yard but don't know where their nests are - lots of trees and foilage. Lots of cardinals, bluejays, sparrows, towhees, robins, squirrels, racoon and crippled Bambi

Later,
Judie

Judie said...

Ooops! meant foliage.

magpie said...

Loretta! Congratulations, "Mom,"
know how much you like those little wrens and wrenlets ☺

magpie said...

I bet Ceil will pick on me for saying I was leaving and I didn't...(I love to be picked on...)

Judie and Shirley - Hope you two can get together for the Eagle Release !

Okay, really, now - off to the nap...got things I need to do later and won't be able to unless I take this little break.
xo

NatureNut said...

Have a good nap, Margy!
Our rain is over for now----BOO
Shirley & Judie, you will love seeing an eagle release! You may have to take pics thru the cage, as they usually split as soon as released (unless someone is going to hold their feet beforehand).

NatureNut said...

Wanda, Thx for Nu pic!! Hope he cleans the lens!

stronghunter said...

Judie, probably need to let Hunter gain a bit more experience before I send him out. He got upset because I would not let him put a roller on a long pole or get on a ladder and paint near the ceiling. Am already going to have to do some "touching up" behind him. Did not plan to paint the ceiling. Really do not want to paint it after everything else has been done.

floralgirl said...

Wow! That was a downpour with wild wind and big old pieces of hail. Mother nature is fierce.Headed towards you, Jo. Going out to try and stand some plants back up.

Megan, I hope the hail didn't do too much damage. I am waiting for the dogs to finish eating, then I am off.

So cool that Judie and Shirley are going to hook up! Should be lots of fun!!
Safe travels, Deb....are the dogs going to the kennel? Hugs....looks like Jim hasn't left yet.

There is a touching Mason update, which I am just going to go ahead and post here:

"One year ago today since Mason's accident. It was a Wednesday, typical summer day for the middle of July. I was at work in Charles Town and Sylvia was shopping for a catering job. There are things that we probably thought were so important at 3:00 that afternoon and whatever they were, by 3:30, were not even a blip on our radar screen. The cliche " in the blink of an eye" was never so true.
But here we are today, planning for Mason's return, when we were told that would not happen. Only through the determination of my Sylvia, the strength of our relationship, our family, our friends, people that we only know through their communications and generous support, the outstanding people and professionals we have come to know through this journey, could Mason's homecoming be possible.
I am not well read enough or skilled enough to articulate and impart to all of you, how we feel about the efforts that have been made on our behalf and Mason's too. Our work is ahead of us, in a major way, but we are confident and hopeful for success. All we can do right now is to say thank you.
Love and Peace To All!!!!!"

magpie said...

For those of you who might not be familiar with this family, they are from Shepherdstown, WV, - and this has been a year-long saga for them....An amazing journey for them with an incredible network of support. Others may add more, but this is the little summary.

magpie said...

I don't think Megan will mind that I add, that she knows this family through her market work at Shepherdstown. I believe that Mason was 18 years old when this accident happened, a vehicle accident between his vehicle and a large commercial truck, on a rainy afternoon.
If you ever hear us talk about "Betty's Restaurant" in Shepherdstown, that is one place that serves up awesome Bacon! (one of Mason's favorite eat-treats) and they, among many many others, have been a bit part of the support network.

God Bless this family for their unswerving Faith and Hope, and Family Love.

xo

hedgie said...

Gotta tell you all a cool story.
In preface, let me say that around here, every few years, toward the latter part of summer, we get plagued with these horrible, fat, yellow/orangy/black hairy 8-leggers who string an intricate web in open spaces, attached to trees, etc. at almost eye-level. Very spooky and disconcerting to say the least.
Daughter and I have been seeing some already. Found one yesterday between deck railings...and it was still there this am.
Wren family was sitting on woodpile a little while ago...saw papa fly up to that area of deck and swoop right back down with a yellow, fat something in his beak---he passed it to mom, who proceeded to feed the fledlings. I went back up to deck and looked and the creature was GONE!!!!! Web still there---when they leave on their own, they wind the web back up!!! GOOD WREN!!!!

Mits said...

been thinking about him alot, Margy, thanks for posting....may God bless he and his remarkable family and friends

magpie said...

I hope that everyone has some special magic in their lives tonight, things that can give you a sense of the wonder and beauty of life, family, friends....
and the strength and comfort of family and friends to plow through a tough time if that is on the menu too.

Me? I think I need to see the grandson again...whatever else was on my agenda, is going to be moved to another time.
Love you guys! I am forever grateful for the fellowship on this here old Blog !

God Bless Us, Every One.
xoxo ☺ ♥

Ooh, do you mean a writing spider, they are black and yellow, and often form an x or a zig zag line in the middle of their web. We get them in the gardens here. Fascinating looking web. They are good in the garden cause they eat grasshoppers and other insects and are capable of consuming prey up to twice their size. They are not poisonous.

stronghunter said...

I think we called them garden spiders. When I was a child, there was a story that said that you should never say your name near one of these spiders because they would write your name and the black widow would come and bite you--or something like that. Has anyone else heard that little story?

Judie said...

Back to visit.

Didn't know the story of Mason and the accident. Really shows the power of faith and fellowship. All the best to him, his family, and his friends.

I remember the story about the "writing" spider. Was about 7 when I saw my first one and it scared me near to death to think it could "get" me.

I'm going to turn my light out for awhile as it is storming here and don't want my puter destroyed -- what would I do now that I have so many friends?

Judie

stronghunter said...

I had seen your messages about Mason, too, but did not know it was someone connected with you all. I know they have appreciated all of the support.

hedgie said...

Megan, don't know if it's the same kind or not...all I know is that I HATE them and I don't want them anywhere near me. I carry a stick and swirl the air in front of me when I walk in the driveway. Never heard any of those stories. UGH!

stronghunter said...

I would give you a link, Lynn, but maybe you don't even want to see a picture--they are under "garden spider" or "writing spider."

NatureNut said...

About 2 hrs. ago, had a 2 minute downpour! DUH. Now, thunder, lightening and RAIN!!
Lynn, I know of Garden Spider that is black & yellow, but not hairy. It writes white zzzzs across the web. Altho, I dislike spiders, those that are not fast & are colorful, I can watch at a fair distance.
Good report on Mason, even tho he can't go home yet. What strength that family has mustered to deal w/this. God Bless...

stronghunter said...

You must look a little interesting walking down the driveway swirling a stick in front of you. Do small children run away?

NatureNut said...

Lights keep flickering-----hope 'puter doesn't konk!

floralgirl said...

stronghunter said...

Good night, Helen.

hedgie said...

Good night, Mits!
Yep, I'm sure I'm a hoot! Luckily, with trees in leaf, don't think anyone can see me unless they are using binocs! No little kids around here! Think it would look worse if I was walking with the umbrella in the sunshine!!! But wouldn't want to throw away a good umbrella if it got on it...NOT LOL!

stronghunter said...

We love you anyway, Lynn.

Judie said...

Hi, turning my light back on after the storm. Lasted about an hour. At least there was some much needed rain.

I agree with Shirley, Lynn. Have a seriously hilarious image of you chasing the unseen down the driveway with a stick. Kinda scary, too.

Well, once the Wrens were mentioned, I noticed tonight a Wren at the sunflower feeder. Kept taking a seed and swooping off to a nearby bush from which I could hear frantic hunger calls. I guess we have baby Wrens

Shirley, husband will be with me Saturday in case wheelchair is needed. Will try to get to Mason Neck by 11:30am. I am short with dark red hair and husband has silvery white hair. So looking forward to meeting you.

Time to say good night to all. Pleasant dreams until tomorrow.

Judie

floralgirl said...

Another intense rain, not as bad as earlier though. Luckily, most of my plants are staked or grown thru netting so they didn't get knocked over. Just had to restake some sunflowers in a spot that took a hit. Think they will survive, many of them have holes in the leaves from the hail. And we got about 2" of rain, that surely saved my garden. Long day, early start tomorrow, so Nite all:)

stronghunter said...

Will be looking for you. I may have may daughter with me. I will let you know. She is having some back pain and has to see how she is feeling. Also, may have Hunter a skinny freckle-faced 8-year-old boy.

Will be leaving George at home.

You have seen my picture. Maybe that will help.

stronghunter said...

I expect we have wren babies nearby, too. The wrens congregate in the trees in our neighbor's yard. Very noisy. I suppose there are nests.

The trees are so thick that there could be anything in there. One tree has engulfed a street light. The light burns most of the time because it is so dark inside the tree.

We also have what I am pretty sure are chimney swifts zooming through the sky.

I am so glad you will try to get together and enjoy the releasing of those 3 eagles. I've never seen it happen except on video - it has to be
such a great feeling of freedom & joy!
If I didn't have a wedding to attend I would have tried my best to have been with you two for the event. It should also be a highlight of Hunter's summer!

Mema Jo said...

Storm is still around here.. earlier downpour wasn't much but this last one was a good one!

In all my years (a lot of them) I never knew about the garden (Writing) spiders. Learned something new today!

hedgie said...

MYTHS - LEGENDS - FOLKLORE

Casey Hauser from Winston-Salem, North Carolina, sent us this urban legend about writing spiders: "I was always told when I was younger to never say your name or the name of a loved one around these spiders because any name they heard they would write in their web and that person would die."

We had never heard this one before, but it is very interesting (and creepy). Thanks, Casey!

Donna Welch from Abbeville, South Carolina, was told as a child that that a person will die if a writing spider "counts your teeth." This saying is also associated with millipedes. We hope it is not true for either organism!

Another saying about spiders from the old days ""If you wish to thrive, let a spider stay alive." (Note: this saying probably applies to all spiders, but we placed it on this page since orb-weavers are such common spiders).

Do you know any myths, legends, or folklore about orb-weaver spiders? If so, let us know.

Spider Myths

I have heard the teeth-counting story too. Lynn, don't let them count your teeth, either!

I am from North Carolina--maybe both stories originated in the Carolinas.

There are always lots of orb weavers on my front porch, but not the writing type.

I am familiar with the Garden Spider, but never heard it called the writing spider...that's interesting. I used to help my Dad in the garden and he would tell me not to disturb the garden spider because it ate a lot of bugs and wouldn't hurt me. So, I have never murdered one, but, have relocated many.
LYNN, if it will make you feel better, I, too wave a stick around when I first go outside in the morning...always webs everywhere. Yikes!

Earlier this evening when I opened the front door to get the mail out of the mailbox, one of the heron fledglings was right next to the front porch! He's really cute.

Well, it's about as cool as it's going to get, so better start doing some laundry.

Oh, I missed just about everyone again! Saw some young turkeys in a field in Berkeley County on the way out to Morgan County.
Also the grandson and I saw newborn moon and ISS - and a lot of what I used to call "Heat Lightning" over back towards Berkeley County.

Never saw Garden/Writing Spiders, guess I have lived too much of my time near the city. Is that a good or bad thing...hmmmmmm...well, I will keep my eyes out for this Wonder of Nature.

I see that Finland Water nest made Beakspeak: I was so excited thinking maybe I could click on the link and get it ! NOT ! I will never understand this quirk.
