Although it isn't common, they do sometimes fall out of the nest. It's never happened at this nest that we know of.

And welcome Russ and Niterpi

I checked in on the NBG 3 Rebels this am.
They said that a transmitter would be placed on one of them sometime around May 20th. Good photos on Glo's Feed Blitz this am of the banding and Shelly from the ME forum was there for the event.

Switch and back incubating the egg(s)

deb said...

I am not sure what it was, Paula, had a skinny tail, not fluffy like a squirrel.

I just finished mowing the back yard. it was nice to begin with, but the winds are getting stronger.

paula eagleholic said...

Hmmm, chipmunk maybe?

Now why didn't they just wait to band the chicks at NBG instead of going back up again to put a GPS on one of em?

paula eagleholic said...

Winds are a little stiff here too, Deb.

Eagle-Eyed's Sissy said...

Got a good look at the eggs at HI, still intact! That is going to be a great view when they hatch!!

Eagle-Eyed's Sissy said...

I agree Paula, seems like they would want to handle them as little as possible!

deb said...

I have leaves!! It is so nice to see green in a tree my crab apples should blossom soon, too. They are purple now, just about ready to open.

hedgie said...

Welcome to more newcomers. We are growing by leaps and bounds! So many mention multiple co-workers watching, too...hope each counts as a click on beakspeak!!

GOOD THURSDAY A.M. EVERYONE.....

UPDATE FROM NZ......

April 22

Mei Xiang decided to spend today, Earth Day, indoors. She was reluctant to move this morning and ate her bag of biscuits in slow motion before retiring to den two for most of the day. We knew this day would be a different when we arrived to find her bamboo uneaten. Mei did shred some bamboo in den three overnight to supplement her nest. She also interacted with her kong toy, picking it up and manipulating it for a few minutes this afternoon. This toy is provided as an object for her to cradle, however Mei will also cradle larger objects such as balls and spools and even the very dear drain grate.

These behaviors are our cues to begin one shift of the behavioral watch (4-7 p.m.) daily. We will not expand the watch until we see further behaviors, such as more nest building, cradling of objects, and further loss of interest in all the affairs of her world, except of course the state of her chosen den.

Mei’s elevated progesterone levels trigger all these maternal behaviors and get her ready for the (potential) main event, the birth of a cub. This hormone is elevated after insemination but then in pandas elevates again usually one to four months later. This first time frame, marked by lower levels of progesterone, is considered the time before the fertilized egg implants in the uterus, a period we note as the period of “delayed implantation.” Then a secondary surge in hormone levels occurs, which is believed to reflect the time when the egg implants in the uterus and begins to develop. The secondary hormone rise has been tricky to mark this year, as Mei's hormone levels have taken a different course from those charted over past years. This secondary rise provides us with a 40- to 50-day window for the end of a false pregnancy or the birth of a cub. Mei behaved normally just yesterday, lying perfectly still for an ultrasound and eating the training treats (bits of apple, pear, and biscuit) with gusto. Nothing significant was observed on the ultrasound. We are left guessing as usual as we create the right birth environment and hope for a sibling for Tai Shan.

Restless Tai Shan and Tian Tian continue to be influenced by their male hormone testosterone. Their days continue to be active ones of wandering, sniffing, scent marking, and consuming large quantities of bamboo culm. It is very impressive to watch them process those large stalks with a resounding crack. Tai and Tian are consuming 33 to 44 pounds daily. It is hard to believe that the low nutrition and energy content of bamboo sustains wild male pandas through the breeding season.

deb said...

The weather channel is telling me it is 48 here with a windchill of 40. It is really in the 70's already, not sure where they are getting there info.

Mits said...

Mei Xiang is resting in the birthing den

Mits said...

Hidey doing nestorations:)

deb said...

They updated the weather channel, it is 81 at 11 o'clock in the morning. I shut up the house and turned on the air, I thought if I got a head start, the air cond. wouldn't have to work so hard to catch up.

deb said...

Check out the three Osprey chicks at HH!

hedgie said...

Thanks, Deb, for turning on AC! Someone made fun of me last weekend when I did it at 80! It was almost 90 in the house when I turned it on...and it ran forever, so this weekend when itt's supposed to be that warm again, I will turn it on sooner rather than later!

Mits said...

playtime in Atlanta...someone is going to get knocked off that log

Mits said...

I never open my windows, because of pollen...go from heat to AC...live in a brick house, and it heats up fast...so my AC has been on when we reached the 80's

deb said...

It is supposed to hit 89 here, I think we will easily beat that. Lynn, my house heats up fast, so I close all the curtains and set the air at 78, keeps it nice inside.

deb said...

I hope Margy gets here internet fixed soon and that she is feeling better.

hedgie said...

Me, either, Mits....I love nightlights, which attract bugs. And there are LOTS of bugs in the woods. There is no such thing as a fine enough screen to keep them out. Since I NEVER open windows, I took the screens out and stored them--makes for much easier window cleaning! AND no pollen blows in, which probably keeps the dust down just a wee bit!

ltl said...

Hidey standing up at the edge of the nest. Careful, kid.

Project Purpose and Background

The Center for Conservation Biology (CCB) at the College of William and Mary is currently researching Bald Eagles throughout the Chesapeake Bay region. The research includes aerial nesting surveys, shoreline counts in eagle concentration areas, banding eagles, and migration studies using satellite transmitters. CCB currently has 60 transmitters on Bald Eagles in the upper Chesapeake Bay and have learned valuable information about eagle movements in the upper Bay.
A satellite transmitter is proposed for an eagle nestling at Norfolk Botanical Garden (NBG) in May 2009. The NBG eagle would be the first from the lower Chesapeake Bay and the Hampton Roads region, and would provide answers to the most frequently asked question, "Where do the eagles go after they leave their nest?"

Project Objectives

(1) To follow the movements of a juvenile Bald Eagle after fledging from its nest at the Norfolk Botanical Garden.
(2) Provide an educational tool for learning about bird migration and eagle ecology in the Chesapeake Bay.
(3) To learn about foraging and roosting behaviors of Bald Eagles in the Chesapeake Bay.

Scope of Service

CCB will provide personnel, equipment, and supplies to fit one NBG juvenile Bald Eagle with a 70g solar powered GPS-PTT satellite transmitter estimated to last three years. The transmitter is fitted on the eagle with a backpack style Teflon harness when the eagle is approximately 55 days old. The eagle will be returned to its nest and fledge naturally with its siblings.

Locations from the transmitter will be sent to CCB from the satellite every 3 days. The Data will be stored and archived through the Satellite Tracking and Analysis Tool (STAT), a free service provided to wildlife researchers by Seaturtle.org. A map of the eagle's movements will be updated daily by the STAT program and available for viewing on http://www.wildlifetracking.org, a website run by Seaturtle.org. In addition, the tracking map can be linked to NBG and CCB websites.

Project Schedule

Banding 3 NBG eagle chicks - April 20, 2009
Fit transmitter to 1 chick - May 20, 2009
Collection of satellite data - May 2009-May 2012

hedgie said...

Yeah, Ceil, usually men make fun of us when we complain about the cold---big men (like Greg) seem to always be hot...but that bus was stuffy and close....and Jo was really perspiring, too!

deb said...

I found it, searched Google and there it was. Sorry it is so long.

ceil said...

If it is public like the banding I would love to go. Have to see because MM surgery is suppose to be the 11th.

That's good info, Deb...don't mind the length!!! The baby you are going to see....is it in captivity? Or is nest low enough for viewing?

I am thinking that all the time the BWO Osprey is spending in the nest is a good sign.

I see there are Osprey females in both Finnish nests this evening (there). Looks like their season is about to proceed.

Here in So Cal, we are back to the onshore breezes and the cloudy mornings, but it should brighten up later and reach to about 70°. ]:~D]

Hidey sure had those wings going.

Good afternoon everyone. I am reporting live from Bluefield Hematology/Oncology! They got my IV on the first stick, yeah!

The pictures of Eagles that Loretta sent out were great. We have a good parent view right now, the color is so good.

deb said...

That's a good sign, Sharon, now tomorrow you will hopefully be so full of energy you won't know what to do first!

hedgie said...

Just had to climb around in the woods to retrieve neighbors' trash that was blowing around my property....a plastic bag full of plastic bags! ARGH!! Sissy....your favorite thing...NOT! At least it didn't blow up into a tree.

movin said...

Surprisingly, I've seen the Allen's Hummingbird mother on the same nest the strange bird robbed not long ago the last couple of days.

And she was sitting on this nest earlier today, but I couldn't see what she had, if anything.

Well, she's off now, and I can clearly see one new egg.

C(°Ù¿°)D

Jim

Ms Bookworm said...

Thanks, Hedgie. I'll hang in there and see what happens. Guess what-- I figured out that if I turn up the volume and minimize the Eagle cam site, I can actually get some other work done on the computer, and when Hidey starts peeping, I know something's up! Can hear when the wind starts blowing hard, or it's beginning to rain, too. And when Belle hits the nest, of course. Pretty cool!

movin said...

Another thing I just noticed:

The BWO female is down in her egg cup a lot more today, and she's been in there for several minutes.

I saw her get up a few minutes ago and look under her like she was expecting something...nothing yet. But I think she might be planning to start her clutch today.

Hi all! Back from my day of fun, style show and luncheon. Also went to a nursery and bought some coleus. Love it for shade!

Lynn, I wan not making fun of you last week with your AC on....just surprised. Did not know you can not open up your house. It is 88.7 here right now and our house is open. We have great insulation and since it is cool in the mornings still, and we have the house wide open, it is very comfortable. When the nights warm up our AC will come on fast. We are very fortunate to be in an area where we can leave the house wide open at night and when we are gone during the day.

Lolly said...

I do not have sound right now. Is the sound out on our nest?

Also, can not get NBG.????

Lucky Deb! Getting to see an eagle baby!

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

I was just reminiscing about when I saw an eaglet do a poop shoot for the first time. Didn't know what in the world was happening, thought they were going to walk backwards off the nest. Laughed really hard when I saw it was just working up to a poop shoot!

Lolly said...

Sharon, for three years we had a red shouldered hawk nest in our front yard. We learned all about poop shoots. The we went to Alaska and we visited the Raptor Center there. We were sitting on the front row when they brought in a beautiful bald eagle. It was sitting on the mans arm when it started to move around and raise it's tail. LOL I knew what was coming and moved my feet back at just the right time.

hedgie said...

Now, now, Mits....we won 2 of last 3 games!! LOL! It'll get better....hope Nats and O's both have really good seasons! Thank goodness it's still early.

I couldn't get NBG earlier, either.

Lolly said...

Thanks Paula! It is always nice to know others have the same problem....not that I want others to have the problme. :)

hedgie said...

I was teasing you, Lolly! I think the sunroom is what causes the house to get so hot....even tho' I close the verticals between it and the living room, the house gets hotter than it did before I had it put on.

WELCOME M....FOLKART.
What state would those bluebirds be in and do they come there every year to your birdbox?

Sharon, fingers and toes crossed that your IV's are over and done with! I went once a month with GeeGee for 4 years to get an IV for Osteoporosis....so time consuming. It was about 4 hours, as I recall.

I took over 100 pictures today, trying to find all three of the suspected eaglets. Finally on picture 80, I see three heads!

I had an email from Margy this morning about going to see the DR.... I hope she did and found some good stuff.

I am so cold BUT I know it is cooling down outside.. I hope it is just the weather.

I will go cover up with my fleece blanket
and come back unless I go on to bed!

I named one while I was watching, NEb. For the NE Bully. It was pecking away at one of the others the whole time. NEb was the bigger and I assume the older. When ever I saw the pecking there were only two showing, NEb and the poor one receiving the pecking.

Sure hope you aren't coming down with something, Jo. I hope Margy went to the doctor, too, and is feeling better.

this is the first year I have actually had bluebirds - I have had the box for many years and clean out the sparrows every spring - now finally I have bluebirds - I am in WV-also have nesting mockingbirds, doves, robins, wrens and a few different kinds of sparrows in my yard full of rabbits!

Shouldn't mama be back in the nest by now? Last night she was in for the night at this time. I'm a little worried...

deb said...

She has been spent a few nights away from the nest, then came back for the rainy nights. I am not sure why she spent the night last night. Both parents are above the nest in the Sycamore tree, watching over Hidey.

deb said...

"has been spent", what on earth kind of grammar was that!

deb said...

M-folkart, I would sure like to visit your yard, so many nesting birds!

Supposed to go down in the low thirties tonight, with frost in some areas. Bet Belle will be back with Hidey before too long. I looked at cam....no sign of you-know-what!!! Maybe someone ate him! Hope, hope.

Carol said...

Deb, thanks for your reply - I am reassured. I'm a new eagle cam watcher (just a couple days now) and am quite hooked! Getting attached to Hidey...

Email from Magpie. Saw Dr. On meds, and has been sleeping most of the day. Rest for the weary!!

Happy Birthday Anne!

Hope you are having a wonderful day!

deb said...

Welcome, Carol, we have all been where you are. It gets easier to adjust to the eaglets getting older and how the parents change their patterns.

Oh my....7500 acres in Cypress Nature Preserve on Alligator Alley in FL have burned since a lightening strike started a fire on Tues. All the poor animals....

hedgie said...

I'm going to say buenos noches. Hope everyone has a restful night, and that Anne Marie had a special birthday. Praying that Margy feels much better tomorrow and that Sharon feels peppier, and that Jo ISN'T coming down with anything.

Awww poor Margy! At least she got sick after the trip!

Hugs to all ♥

Been watching TV tonight, Grey's Anatomy. Took up the whole night.

Just watched a story on the news about a momma duck and her approx.20 babies being rescued. They were so cute.
