Tuesday PM

Here's some relevant information from the Cooperative Extension System.

Usually, 2 (1 to 3) white or mottled brownish eggs are laid after nesting behavior begins. The eggs hatch after a 35- to 45-day incubation period. Both adults hunt and secure food for the young, with the female doing most of the incubating, feeding, and brooding. Young eagles become strong enough to tear meat apart by 50 days of age. They are fully feathered and ready to leave the nest 65 to 70 days after hatching. Although the young are as large as the adult birds at this time, their parents may continue to provide them with food and protection for as long as 3 months after they leave the nest.

Not all eagle eggs hatch, and the death rate of young eagles, as in other birds of prey, is high. Young eagles are antagonistic toward each other and the stronger often kills or causes the weaker to die of starvation. Losses due to exposure, diseases, parasites, and predation occur while the young are still in the nest. Up to 75% of the young eagles die during their first year due to starvation, disease, and causes directly or indirectly associated with humans.

Thanks for the new thread, Steven, and for the information. We are still hoping for a hatch from the first egg.

thanks for the new thread, Steve and the important relevant info. thanks Sunnny for the call over.

Well, earlier I thought my Norfolk was down, so I refreshed it. While waiting for that to happen, the lady eagle moved....

My NBG has not been 'up' since that refresh..????

deb said...

Norfolk is down for me, too, Jim.

Lolly said...

Thanks Steve for the new thread and information. We are going to think positive and hope this one hatches successfully!

movin said...

Thanks, Steve. I'm not too sure that is specifically for Bald Eagles though...

We haven't seen a single case of fratricide in the B.E. nests we've been watching. They do engage in the Sibling rivalry thing though, so in an extraordinary case it could happen.

Golden Eagles almost always eliminate the weaker chick however ... guess there is more of a food availability problem.

Thank goodness these have a good source of fish for the young...

Good Late Afternoon Eagle ♀ and ♂ Friends

Hedgie and I found a window of opportunity and made a trip across the River to see our good ol' gal pal WHOO HOO YOU KNOW WHO! JO!

We are happy to report that Jo looks great! She is doing well, not in discomfort, and adjusting to the adjustments needed to get through the healing process. We got to see a picture of the incision and the staples - OUCH- but she is in the right place with the right people, loving family. We met
"Mr. Jo " (Ed) and new baby Donivan's grandmother Kristin -
Sure was nice to be in JO's ROOST for a short visit.
So we wanted to tell you all is well in Lennoxville ☺ ♥

And, Jo appreciates all the loving care and concern coming her way from ALL of us Momsters and Dadsters...

paula eagleholic said...

Lots of info in that link. Thanks, Steve, I've got it bookmarked.

magpie said...

We'd like to have taken you ALL with us...but it was kind of a spur of the moment chance to cut and run!

paula eagleholic said...

Kewl move, Margy and Hedgie.

Glad you got to visit Jo...

deb said...

I did the same, Paula, very nice site!

deb said...

I am glad you got to go and see Jo! Bet she loved the company. :)

magpie said...

Yes, it was magical for all of us I think....and that Hedgie is a Great Chauffeur....We stayed off the interstate and took the "Country Roads" there. Saw some nice little daffodils along the roadside and saw that Robin Jo mentioned earlier today ☺

We had a chance to tell her husband and daughter how CRAZY we are about her...☺

T-Bird said...

hedgie said...

Steve, that 35-45 day window is longer than we had known about....so guess we will keep positive thoughts for awhile yet before we fret or give up hope on #1.

UPDATE FROM BRS........

Howdy! Bet ya'll thought I forgot about ya!

Actually, the internet connections have been nothing less than HORRIBLE this trip!

Lastnight, I barely had enough signal to squeak the camera feed out. There was not enough left to do my blog, upload videos, etc. I didn't even answer any emails!

Arizona, New Mexico, and West Texas are very bad for keeping connected on the road. Even when I was connected, I dropped signal EVERYTIME I changed towers. I can keep a signal in the middle of Montana, Wyoming, etc....but when it comes to the deep southwestern states, it is almost impossible when outside of a major city. I hope some of you at least got to see some camera time. I had to manually change towers more than 100 times the last few days.

But, no fear! I had the video camera going, and have about 5 or more videos I will be editing and posting on the BRT website.

We are just a few miles away from our delivery which happens very early tomorrow morning.

Ok, let me start editing videos, and I will let you know when each one is active on the website for ya. :)

deb said...

Somebody call JO!

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

I was watching that Glo and wondered but nobody said anything so I just figured I was nuts. There is definitely something moving there.

hedgie said...

Yes, Mits...all repeats tonight.

What a miracle life is.

T-Bird said...

Thanks Glo. Thanks Eagle-Eye for the IM.

T-Bird said...

What great parents we have.

Mits said...

honestly , that chick looks alot older than just a new hatching, thought I saw a black beak.

carolinabeachmom said...

sunny said...

So, I go to take a birthday call, and y'all hatch an eaglet???

movin said...

**OOORAH, OOORAH**

** GLO !! **

I could clearly see the outline of a new chick trying to raise its head. It must have been hatched for a while and recovered its strength.

What time is that clip from, Glo??

Now...is it No. 1 Chick, a little late, or is it No. 2 Chick about on time?? It probably means we won't know for a while still, but there's one healthy-looking eagle chick in the nest now!!

BEAUTIFUL, GLO, THANKS!

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

Glo, I am so glad you captured that! Thanks!

glo said...

Hatch was at 7:56 WV time see my post ..I just typed it and knew either I was right or had gone totally nuts and you all would know it very soon LOL.

glo said...

It was so my pleasure to capture that, I too have been glued here for hours since Fri...Thanks Lib and Belle..you did good.!!!

deb said...

I think the little chick has been hiding. Check out this picture on the Hancock forum from 7:55!

Hancock Picture

T-Bird said...

Do you all see a crack in another egg?

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

Are their dates off a little bit at Hancock?

glo said...

Well Belle did lots of rolling or whatever when she first returned to the nest. Two or three times we noted her up but hard to see what all was happening. So guess we need to say obvious movement of our little hatchling was seen at 7:56...and since then things have been restful, snug as a bug in a rug and quiet or almost an hour now.

paula eagleholic said...

I'll have to see more of the hatched chick, I'm sorry, but all I see is the eagles talons moving on either side of the 3 eggs.

Mits said...

Are you looking at kittenfaces' pics, that looks like a chick that has been here awile....:)

deb said...

I see Tuesday March 10th, Sharon. That's today.

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

And where is PAULA????

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

There you are!

deb said...

I didn't even see that one, Mits, just looked at their last one. Sure does look like a chick!

paula eagleholic said...

I don't see a chick in the Hancock pic either.

glo said...

Deb I think that picture on Hancock was from about 10 mins before we actually saw the movement. While you were out filling your birdfeeders. I did upload a video of that too It is also on FTLOE but on the update page. The movement I see in that one I thought was Belle's talon so like you did not speculate, just uploaded it.. but could very well have been a hatchling . They were very close together and can see the 3 eggshells at least still in that video and on the Hancock picture.

floralgirl said...

That would explain all the black spots you see throughout the video- they are her talons...hmmmm...so hard to see.

deb said...

I thought I saw a chick at 6 ish, but then the next view I saw three eggs. Who knows when it was hatched, but thanks to Glo for undeniable proof!

Mema Jo said...

Would someone email me my Maine Eagle Blog My link will not connect

Lolly said...

Wahoooooooo!!!!!! I am here! Now, bring on the fish!!!!

glo said...

Probably close to 7:20 I made the last video on this page and thought that was it for me. This is the one where I think it is Belle's talon as well. Talon or eaglet movement

But the next time a few minutes later before all this quietness now I knew it wasn't a talon :)

I am satisfied and very happy. I am also off to work now. Have a good night.

floralgirl said...

The Main forum site is down, Jo.

deb said...

BOTH!

paula eagleholic said...

Both in the nest

hedgie said...

AMEN AND HALLELUJIAH!! WELCOME, LITTLE EAGLE!!
Great video, Glo....for sure it is a baby!! WooHoo!!!!!

Mema Jo said...

I guess they didn't want us to see anything!!!

Thanks for info on Maine

floralgirl said...

I saw the shape of 3 eggs, no movement in cup that I could see, but just too hard to see.

deb said...

I saw adult eagles.

deb said...

Up again on Still cam.

Mema Jo said...

I saw 2 adult eagles - up close and thennnnnnnnnnn Plop! 1 adult eagle on the egg well......

paula eagleholic said...

I could see 2 eggs on the switch, nothing on the turn

Mema Jo said...

Now I guess I missed the position switch

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

Now ain't it funny how so many people can look at the same pic and see different things.

Mema Jo said...

Live feed working great now....

Looking up & around

paula eagleholic said...

It looks like talons to me...

movin said...

Paula, just focus on the movement at the upper left side of the egg cluster. As you watch, it becomes clear...it's a chick actively struggling to get up (succeeds for an instant). You can clearly see the outline of the chick after a moment of glare at the beginning.

Give your eyes a rest ... and some drops ... before trying again. Hahaha.

If these old eyes can see it, .......

Lolly said...

I saw movement and it wasn't talons. I feel sure we have a hatch. Great video Go!!!!

floralgirl said...

Look at the video- you can see a dark talon at the bottom, then those black spots at top may be talons too, feed gets jumpy at the end, and suddenly adult is on egg cup. SHe is pulling her leg back then bringing it forward. Just throwing in my latest two cents worth...lol....

paula eagleholic said...

The video is too small for me to be able to say it's a chick, but that's just my opinion!

Belle is snoozing

deb said...

Too bad it isn't day time and we have someone watch the live feed at NCTC!
