Hi. I'm Susan Fluharty and I live in Martinsburg, near Hedgesville. My live Eagle Cam feed from NCTC has been down for two days. All I'm getting is a blank screen. Is anyone else having problems? I just got back from a Master Naturalist class at NCTC and their cam seems to be up and running out there. I'm so bummed!
Susan, NCTC has a closed circuit TV that works all the time...live cam has been down, it is supposed to be Comcast's falut, all we have it the 30 second cam now
Welcome Susan So did you get to see and hear some of this live...yes we are all slightly well that might not be the word...bummed here but grateful for a still cam so at least we do know about our baby.
Thanks for the update, everyone! I was afraid there was something wrong with my computer. Oh my gosh, a baby! I'm so excited!! I was glued to the computer all last spring and even got to see one fledge. I hope we have 3 successful fledglings this spring as well. Isn't it wonderful to witness this? I'm a substitute teacher for Berkeley County and I always show the kids the eagle's nest on the classroom computers when I'm at school. Some of the kids even write the web address down so they can watch it at home.
Ha Ha Jim I suggested that back many a comment ago...no one responded except to say 2 eggs...but then well we know how that goes rom here. LOL...but yep I do think its possible for sure. As I said ealrier Kent a couple of years ago had 2 hatches only hours apart.
When did the first eaglet hatch? I knew it was going to be any day now. Hedgie, I didn't get to visit the nest tree, but I'd love to sometime. The guard told me once that that area was off limits so I never ventured over there. I was in the Instructional East building this morning taking the Project Learning Tree class. There didn't appear to be many people there today. Other than the 15 people in my class, I only saw 2 other people. And no, Deb, I didn't get to see the eaglet on the live feed, but I'll tune in to the still cam until the live feed is up. Thank goodness we still have that!
Mits Jo and I took the road and parked by the barn and the guard had a fit. It was so frustrating. As if I would do anything but take a picture from a distance. there are trucks and cars going in and out of that barn all day..
Yeah, A-M....but it's THEIR people...not "outsiders" like us!! Don't they know by now that we are the best friends they have???? When we were there a couple of weeks ago, I'm sure that one of the workers in a truck drove up to barn just to make sure nne of us had walked up there!
Thanks, Mits. Maybe I'll ask the guard if it would be ok if I just drove over near the tree the next time I'm out there. Late last spring while attending the public lectures, and when the eaglets were almost ready to fledge, I took my binocs and pulled over at the first intersection before turning right into the parking lots to get a good at the nest and eagles. I would be nice to get up closer to the tree, however.
This is hysterical! Is this his idea of a birthing gift to wifey?? Lib, slow down! It will rot if you keep this up! Belle sure isn't showing any signs of being hungry, is she?
next time, turn left Susan, pretend you are dropping off a kid at daycare.....Lynn, I think you may be right about that....but it is ok to let the good ole boys come in with their rifles....
CONGRATULATIONS to all you eagle watchers on the blog! It seems while the Heels were losing to Florida St., you have seen a new little bobble head, and plenty of food being brought in.
Hedgie that is exactly what he did last year except it was fish...lots of huge fish that eventually drew flies before they were all eaten. Lib gets into this celebrating and caring for the family very quickly. He is a hunter and a fisherman for sure :)
it may be government property, but that is something I will never be happy about, especially at that particular time of the year., when we visit we are very quiet and respectful of all the wildlife around there...
Right, Mits! Maybe we should carry guns or bows!!! Susan, in case you missed it...the evening before the first egg was laid at 2:30AM, there was a permit deer hunt on the grounds of NCTC to thin the ranks....the shot scared the dickens out of Belle.
Ya know I can't prove it scientifiaclly but it does make me wonder if that hunting thing the night Belle was gonna lay egg number one in any way effected how much she did sit on it those first few days which were really cold etc...may not at all be related, and then again it surely could have ...they were firing very close to our nest as we all know. I know we thought she was jsut spacing out hatching time, but she could do that anywhere along in the brooding cycle well early on anyway...just a thought and something to consider. If you can't drive down there you certainly should not be hunting near there while eagles are actively building their nest for the season!!!:(
Neat, Glo....I wasn't watching then! I started when the eaglets were still small, but I think it was in April. And I'm with you....ALL animals have feelings!
It should never happen again at that time That was way way ff base...but we are not the powers that be..it was however a crummy thing to do to our eagles. And that is in fact a criticism of those involved with that decision.
and it is funny how the sound for the cam disappeared shortly after that incident...but wait, think it is already set up for at least next fall, and if the count is not down, guess they will have it again next winter
Belle has housekeeping duties awaiting her whenever she decides to get up! Nest is kind of messy. Isn't it nice to see some vcolor...not only to the nest and eagles, but even the grass is greening up!
NCTC is pleased to announce that our managed deer hunt, which has taken place every year since 2003, will be continued in 2009. Dates are to be announced later. This opportunity is open to all hunters, including the disabled. West Virginia hunting seasons and regulations apply, and all hunters must have a West Virginia Hunting and Trapping License (Resident or Non-Resident), and an approved certificate for completion of a Hunter Education Course.
Look for further information, including application procedure, in the summer of 2009.
During our managed deer hunt in the fall of 2008 a total of 31 deer were harvested at NCTC, slightly higher than the average over the previous 5 years. All hunter evaluations returned indicate folks were generally pleased with the way the hunt operated and plan to hunt here again. We would like to express our appreciation to the great group of hunters who helped make the hunt safe and successful, and assisted in our effort to keep the deer population at a level appropriate for the habitat. We hope to see you in the autumn of 2009!
So how can we stop it Mits Haivng it is not the issue..I don't want to see deer starve and people who could use the food starve either but not that time!!!!
I thought they could give deer birth control pills, I know they have done that on private and government properties in Montgomery, MD., guess just not as quick and effective
Mits, and everyone else...I talked to Randy about it when we were eating lunch. He didn't know, and he, too, was appalled that it was allowed to happen then. He said that he wouold talk to somebody about it. I told him that we understood the need for the hunt...but why not during regular season, and certainly NOT the end of Jan. I think it is possible, that since the eggs are basically permeable at time of laying, that Belle's "fight or flight" adrenaline could have infused that egg, which may be why it is probably not viable. I still think it's a miracle that she actually laid it IN THE NEST instead of just dropping wherever she had gone to hide. JMHO.
JMHO, just think shooting should be off limits after the middle of December....a few people walking around the bottom of the nest is probably not going to scare them off, they listen to the playing children everyday, but guns can probably scare the heck out of them
keep looking at the nest and wondering what to have for dinner, jubby should still be on soft diet for tooth extraction...BTW he is a little bit cranky today:)
Good Grief! Just saw nest for 1st time today. Does Lib think it's Easter & ambushed the bunnies?? I haven't finished reading all 500 & probably won't---gather there is no hatch. Helen sent me pic of egg w/hole. Was that the same egg from a week ago? Guess it's hard to tell.
Can I cry on some shoulders? Put on ESPN for MD-Duke game & it's blacked out!!!!!!! Do they want everyone around here to just run down the road to Atlanta to buy tickets for the game?????
"teachable spirit" not a know it all...at whatever age. Have never met Randy but it usually doesn't take too long to tell if someone listens and evaluates what others say.
My ESPN was blacked out for the Virginia Tech, North Carolina game. I'm glad I'm not a VT fan. I still think that is playing dirty. That is just wrong that the "powers that be" can black out some airways. Okay, I'm off the box.
I hope we get a view of eaglet before the night light comes on. I got my camera to take a pic---that way I will get a larger file, altho prob a little blurry. Oh to have close up like BW or OK :>( Not complaining---just wishing! MD lost, but I don't care.
You're right about that Lolly. I am totally satisfied with one healthy eaglet since I really don't know which egg hatched.. Yepper! There could be another one - we will just have to keep watch. We are all Happy Nestors tonight!
Oh, yes, Jo...we got them and Jack has nailed them on. Got a WV state medallion, as well as several others that we had missed. I will have to take a picture of our hiking sticks to show you. Jack has also made hiking sticks for Laurel and the boys. And, they are starting their collection of medallions. We love to hike! That is our plan for Colorado in June.
I guess the egg w/big black hole seen this AM must be the one from which this eaglet emerged. Since we never had a hatch all week when hole on egg had been seen last weekend, I guess that egg's a dud. (unless that was dirt?!)

WHAT IS THAT IN THE NEST???
Might have to turn off the cam until that smorgasboard gets eaten. That looks pretty nasty.
Lord only knows what else we will see besides an eaglet in that nest now LOL. what is that? Geeesh maybe he is gonna bring the whole family :(
I am trying to figure that out myself-
Is that another rabbit that Liberty brought!!??
No cuban cigars??
C(°ٿ°)D
Jim
funny Shaorn we both thought smorgasboard at the smae time. LOL He sure can feed his family.
Rain moving into to Cambridge, MD too.
Oh, he sure can!
Did ya'll see the drop? I missed it totally. Looked like the last varmit just appeared out of nowhere.
successfull hunting today, what a father!!
At least there's no snow in the nest, so it isn't quite as graphic as the BW's first big buffet!
Whatever the addition is it looks denuded! Yuck-o!!!
Too bad Margy had to go to work!
Hey, Wanda...where are you and Gene???
Sure do wish he would bring in fish to cover the mammals up!
OMG....I am now convinced. Maine has a picture and I can see the eaglet. Whoopeeeeee!!!!!
Missed it, would have like to have seen that coming in on live feed. She's up again-
The eagles at HI are so busy today too!! Maybe they are getting ready to lay some eggs!??
they could be early, but the date everyone has in mind that live there it is around the 25th of March
My eyes aren't that great, but that almost looked like two little heads to me. Anyone else?

I thought that earlier Sunny.
Hi Susan, Welcome! The live feed has been down for a while but the still cam is working. We have a baby!!
Susan, NCTC has a closed circuit TV that works all the time...live cam has been down, it is supposed to be Comcast's falut, all we have it the 30 second cam now
Susan, the live feed is down but the still cam is up. We have a baby now.
Yes, Susan, the live feed has been down for at least 24. Gray screen is all we get too.
C(°ٿ°)D
Jim
Susan, we are all watching the still cam. Bummer!
Okay, time for a slumber party at NCTC.... for researches sake, of course.
looking down..
That is a wonderful idea, Megan. We are willing to sacrifice to help others in the learning process of the reproduction of eagles.
well might just have to drive up there early next week.
Welcome Susan So did you get to see and hear some of this live...yes we are all slightly well that might not be the word...bummed here but grateful for a still cam so at least we do know about our baby.
Susan, did you get to see an eaglet on the live feed?

She's up and down every couple of minutes now. Do you think a second chick might be hatching?
C(°ٿ°)D
Jim
That is one busy MaMa in that nest.
Welcome, Susan! Was there a lot of excitement at NCTC? Did you visit the tree, and see our pair??
I have posted a picture of the eaglet on blog under misc. pictures.
It has been my experience that with our eagles, ANYTHING is possible!
Where is Maine's forum pic??
Ha Ha Jim I suggested that back many a comment ago...no one responded except to say 2 eggs...but then well we know how that goes rom here. LOL...but yep I do think its possible for sure. As I said ealrier Kent a couple of years ago had 2 hatches only hours apart.
I posted the Maine forum picture under "Misc. pictures".
well several of people had mentioned 2 eggs hatching a long way back on blog.
Well, me and my spouse are going to Wallyworld. Ya'll watch for me!
There ya go Jim Several people have been mentioning two eggs hatching way back on the blog. We could all be seeing double soon LOL. or not...
Holy Mackrel! I just got home and see a rabbit and maybe a fish in our nest...I just bet there is a baby in there! PLEASE DON'T LET ME BE WRONG!
Wanda, check out the picture on my blog. under misc fish.
misc. fish???? lol
Thanks, Lolly!! I need to make an eye apptmt. SOON!!!! I just can't see the baby. Wish to goodness Belle would just leave the nest for a minute!
Ha ha ha- misc. fish...
Still raining, so she may not get up for a while.
When did the first eaglet hatch? I knew it was going to be any day now. Hedgie, I didn't get to visit the nest tree, but I'd love to sometime. well guard was not totally honest with you, you can drive by and stop at the road along side of the tree, the tree is near the daycare center road.
roflmbo.......just say I have fish on the brain. Hey.....I am 15 years older that Sissy and she is going on Life Alert.
Well Holy Mackeral is kind of a good description too....works for me.
Lolly, I think you need some kind of sugar today...just a tad...:)
Mits Jo and I took the road and parked by the barn and the guard had a fit. It was so frustrating. As if I would do anything but take a picture from a distance. there are trucks and cars going in and out of that barn all day..
Actually I added another two pics to Misc. PICTURES and had typed "fish". Brain is not functioning correctly today.
A nice glass of wine to celebrate will be GRAND! Forget the sugar.
IS that more food?
Both in nest
well we usually park under the tree, as long as there are no eggs or eaglets til they have fledged, was that back in Occtober, Ann
Not another one!
oh no, Lolly no wine:) don't know what you will be saying then.
There is just no doubt he is gonna fill up that nest with food- and unfortunatley he must not be in a fishy mood.
That Lib is on the ball!
looks like more food....let's play guess the catch!
Lib did just add something else to the nest...she has her pick of 3 things now...Getting in all the vitamins.
Hey, it could be interesting!!LOL
ok, go for it Lolly:)
Mits......I truly think it is time to call Paula and tell her at least about the food deliveries.
Mits they just like you better than me..:)
Lib is a better provider than any of my ex husbands.:)
Humanizig again but all the animals I have known do have feelings for sure... So I think Lib and Belle are celebrating too
Yeah, A-M....but it's THEIR people...not "outsiders" like us!! Don't they know by now that we are the best friends they have???? When we were there a couple of weeks ago, I'm sure that one of the workers in a truck drove up to barn just to make sure nne of us had walked up there!

well if it was open house weekend, no one could go up, it there are eaglets, signs say stay away til July 4th.
This is hysterical! Is this his idea of a birthing gift to wifey?? Lib, slow down! It will rot if you keep this up! Belle sure isn't showing any signs of being hungry, is she?
What happened to Deb? She disappeared.
I think she hasn't gotten uop cause it was raining, looks like it's almost past the nest for now.
I have saved all the pictures of the food. I want Paula and Jo to see this.
next time, turn left Susan, pretend you are dropping off a kid at daycare.....Lynn, I think you may be right about that....but it is ok to let the good ole boys come in with their rifles....
CONGRATULATIONS to all you eagle watchers on the blog! It seems while the Heels were losing to Florida St., you have seen a new little bobble head, and plenty of food being brought in.
Raining here now.
I was eating lunch, loading pictures and trying to get rid of a headache. I have added pictures to Nest page.
You are sooo right about letting in the guys with the rifles, MITS. That was something awful to let that happen when it did.
Hedgie that is exactly what he did last year except it was fish...lots of huge fish that eventually drew flies before they were all eaten. Lib gets into this celebrating and caring for the family very quickly. He is a hunter and a fisherman for sure :)
Susan Be sure you have a kid with you on the way down that street to Day Care...then have them duck on the way back out LOL.
it may be government property, but that is something I will never be happy about, especially at that particular time of the year., when we visit we are very quiet and respectful of all the wildlife around there...
Right, Mits! Maybe we should carry guns or bows!!!
Susan, in case you missed it...the evening before the first egg was laid at 2:30AM, there was a permit deer hunt on the grounds of NCTC to thin the ranks....the shot scared the dickens out of Belle.
Ditto MITS
They shoot on the property?
Ya know I can't prove it scientifiaclly but it does make me wonder if that hunting thing the night Belle was gonna lay egg number one in any way effected how much she did sit on it those first few days which were really cold etc...may not at all be related, and then again it surely could have ...they were firing very close to our nest as we all know. Neat, Glo....I wasn't watching then! I started when the eaglets were still small, but I think it was in April. And I'm with you....ALL animals have feelings!
I wish some humans I know would learn from our eagles how to protect, feed and serve their families like Lib and Belle do.
It should never happen again at that time That was way way ff base...but we are not the powers that be..it was however a crummy thing to do to our eagles. And that is in fact a criticism of those involved with that decision.
yes anne-marie, on the property, right by the nest
and it is funny how the sound for the cam disappeared shortly after that incident...but wait, think it is already set up for at least next fall, and if the count is not down, guess they will have it again next winter
So even if our eyes deceive us...one or two eaglets...we know that there just HAS to be new life since Lib is doing this, right?
right
Belle has housekeeping duties awaiting her whenever she decides to get up! Nest is kind of messy. Isn't it nice to see some vcolor...not only to the nest and eagles, but even the grass is greening up!

2009 Annual White-tailed Deer Hunt Program
NCTC Environmental Assessment, White-tailed Deer Management
So how can we stop it Mits Haivng it is not the issue..I don't want to see deer starve and people who could use the food starve either but not that time!!!!
I really don't know, and sure someone from NCTC will be mad at me for even suggesting it does not happen, it does make money probably.
Beautiful tent over whatever she is keeping warm and dry.
I thought they could give deer birth control pills, I know they have done that on private and government properties in Montgomery, MD., guess just not as quick and effective
They can make their money before January.
I thik it the timing not issue of having it. I think they need to compromise.
JMHO.
Heck give the food to families and or shelters food pantries etc at Christmas time. Still has same effect for humans and deer but nOT on our eagles.
I have yard work that needs to be done before Sunday gets here. I can only do it in small spirts as the energy level is low. BBL
they say that is what they do.
Yes it may be what they do so why not do it a several weeks earlier.
Tenting now to keep rain off, right?
It is like the nest that was taken down with the eagle egg in it, that was Randy's boss I think, he did not know about that either...
I also told Randy about the edible birth control programs used successfully in areas of Long Island and in the FL Keys.
Yep Mom is keeping things warm and dry.
JMHO, just think shooting should be off limits after the middle of December....a few people walking around the bottom of the nest is probably not going to scare them off, they listen to the playing children everyday, but guns can probably scare the heck out of them
Well so if .Randy has a teachable spirit...then maybe we can at least get the timing of the hunt changed.
that is right, I knew I had heard about it somewhere else, but, that is not fun.
I think we can lobby as hard as we can for it to be at different time, after all doesn't Government property belong to us taxpayers too?
Good info, Mits.....of course this situation occurred in '09, so they are basically already started on the '09 endeavors....argh!
I'd be willing to run naked thru the field that night and scare the heck out of the hunters:)
Yeah...we are all supporting the entire operation!
keep looking at the nest and wondering what to have for dinner, jubby should still be on soft diet for tooth extraction...BTW he is a little bit cranky today:)
Good Grief! Just saw nest for 1st time today. Does Lib think it's Easter & ambushed the bunnies??
I haven't finished reading all 500 & probably won't---gather there is no hatch.
Helen sent me pic of egg w/hole. Was that the same egg from a week ago? Guess it's hard to tell.
that might have been the 1st pic I sent to you Loretta, sent you others since then.
maybe grilled cheese, that is kinda soft
Can I cry on some shoulders?
Put on ESPN for MD-Duke game & it's blacked out!!!!!!! Do they want everyone around here to just run down the road to Atlanta to buy tickets for the game?????
Condolences to WV fans---close game!
Loretta, jubby is watching it on Channel 20...WDCA
Helen, I read all your mail.
Loretta, go to Lolly or my page. You can see pictures of what we are quite certain is an eaglet.
Nature Nut SOunds like you need to be chekcing your email quick and read some of the blog!!!
I think MD is losing.
OK, just saw a comment that there IS a BABY!!!! Yippee!!
Well hint...from the nuttly one...there is a reason why there are over 500 posts and a nest full of food.
Define teachable spirit? : )
I dwnlded all the pics sent to me & they are so small, I couldn't tell what was there.
"teachable spirit" not a know it all...at whatever age. Have never met Randy but it usually doesn't take too long to tell if someone listens and evaluates what others say.
teachable spirit, a man who listens to reason, maybe?
: )
Loretta, did you find the game, only around 2 minutes left?
I believe Maryland is going to lose. The last 34 sec. of the game will prbably last 2 min. : (
I do not want it to get dark. Can not see anything then.
it is almost over.
they lost
Yep, Loretta....Duke just beat MD on Ch. 20...too bad. 67-61.
sunset at nest....
7:17 PM EDT
Sorry Maryland fans. Both West Virginia and Maryland lost in their divisional playoffs. : (
Lolly Sure would be great to see a feeding actually happening in our view before it gets dark. Still have some time I hope!!!
I mean in their conferences
I don't think we are going to see a feeding until tomorrow.
Me, either, Lolly....we won't be able to see much of anything then!
My ESPN was blacked out for the Virginia Tech, North Carolina game. I'm glad I'm not a VT fan. I still think that is playing dirty. That is just wrong that the "powers that be" can black out some airways. Okay, I'm off the box.
still image is freezing...
Say it ain't so Anne-Marie.
cant get it to resfresh
I have tried everything.
time says 6:24. wont change.
My still cam is refreshing.
reboot .Anne Marie
Try closing it and reopening it, I am at 6:30.
Mine is refreshing.
rebooted. ok now..wheee.
thanks gang! :)

Reaching ove rinto nestbowl but standing by food.
looks like she is headed back to sit on ...

OH HAPPY DAY ! They have a FEAST so I know for sure what is going on in our nest!!
Just now signing on and reading and looking and watching...... Sharon called much earlier this afternoon for me to get my guard up for a surprise!!!
I have a bad feeling we are going to miss lots of feedings because the angle of the cam.
I think it is a feeding.
feeding babe but I cant see. Hi Jo, Happy Day
Hello Mema Jo, how are you feeling?
Both, I think that time, Anne.
Yea Jo!!! Is this not the greatest day?!!!!
Hi MeMa Jo we think we can safely celebrate this time.. The banquet has obviously been set out.
I dont know is the angle of the cam or the area of the egg cup. They could have asked up before building it so far back..:)
Eagles just dont ask.
I am feeling soooooooooo much better now!
Yepper it is a feding - Would love to see that little face....
I am so happy to share this with all of you special Eagle Buddies!!!
definitely reaches over for food and then reaches into nestbowl
You too Mema Jo!
Jo....I have put up some pictures under MISC PICTURES. Did I do that right? LOL
I hope we get a view of eaglet before the night light comes on. I got my camera to take a pic---that way I will get a larger file, altho prob a little blurry. Oh to have close up like BW or OK :>(
Not complaining---just wishing!
MD lost, but I don't care.
Lolly - your Misc Pics are great
I had looked at them when I first signed on and read that you had them. They tell the WHOLE story!
HI JO!!---Oh, Happy Day!
Jo, isn't it great? Think you need to threaten Belle with your eagle cane to move and let us get a look! Oh, forgot, I have one now, too!!!
You know, I think that we were all getting more than a little discouraged. That makes this an even happier occasion!!
I am breaking the diet. Jack has poured me a glass of wine. Are you ready Mits....let's see what I can type now.
You're right about that Lolly. I am totally satisfied with one healthy eaglet since I really don't know which egg hatched.. Yepper! There could be another one - we will just have to keep watch.
We are all Happy Nestors tonight!
taking a break. BBL
Cool- I was watching while making dinner- she was definitely feeding a chick- now all we need is the live feed....
Think Belle is sleeping....very little movement. Tuckered out....you would think she'd done the hatching work!!!
Hedgie - In about a month I will probably be so glad that I have this cane!
It will come in handy!
Lolly - did you get any more walking stick medallions?
Loretta - you have a walking stick, don't you?
You can tell how eventful a day at the nest is by the number of times you need
to split! lol
Guess we will soon go for the
THIRD Split of the day
Oh, yes, Jo...we got them and Jack has nailed them on. Got a WV state medallion, as well as several others that we had missed. I will have to take a picture of our hiking sticks to show you. Jack has also made hiking sticks for Laurel and the boys. And, they are starting their collection of medallions. We love to hike! That is our plan for Colorado in June.
Has anyone called Paula?
Well I haven't been lost..had lots of pictures. I was enlarging them to see. Too bad you can't enlarge then put on your blog page.
I have one that shows chick on my blog page. NEST OF LIBERTY AND BELLE.
Going to check out Lolly's and Debs. DEB if you take a picture with your camera. Then it can be enlarged when we click on it!!! ( :
Yeah Jo is in for all the feasting.
I guess the egg w/big black hole seen this AM must be the one from which this eaglet emerged. Since we never had a hatch all week when hole on egg had been seen last weekend, I guess that egg's a dud.
(unless that was dirt?!)
