Yeah, I remember 2006, Dana, and I've always liked the choice we voted in.
On the other hand, we have such an outlandish record of naming chicks the wrong sex... For example, it always bothered me that 'Big Boy' was actually a girl, and Ms-in-between was a boy bird.
So, if we are going to do it formally, I would be happier if we kept it to generic names like 'Spunky' or used initials.
...Another thought: we could have a professional, like Lisa or Steven, I.D. their sex beforehand.

When did you climb the tree in 2006 and determine that to be the absolute truth, Jim???? I don't even think the experts at NCTC could determine that.

So far we have one eaglet that hatched this past Saturday, March 14th.
We don't know if all the eggs will hatch or not...I think the next couple of days will tell the tale.
Actually, DNA analysis is the only definitive way to tell the sex of the eaglet....beak and tarsus measurements are not exact, but they are a very good indication.
well for sure, but looking in a nest on a cam would never be the most accrurate guess of sex of a 3 month old eaglet....the only reason we know the difference with Belle and Lib, is we see who is on top during HP.
I vote we do not subject the eaglet to DNA testing...

Even the brawny bunch of construction workers on the Woodrow Wilson Bridge project near the eagles' nest are aghast. They call the younger bird in George's life "Camilla," "Angelina" and "Charlotte the Harlot."
Not TOO impressed with any of the dancers yet....Lawrence Taylor sure wasn't that light on his feet when he ended Pretty Boy Theismann's career, tho', was he???

I volunteer to climb the sycamore tree and swab the little chick's cheek. Or maybe even a poop shoot sample will work for DNA:)

With all this talk about names it is true that the names just evolved due to the eaglet's characteristics as we watch them. We have never voted on their names but yes we did good in voting for mom/dad's names! Sex makes no difference if you name an eaglet a non-gender name!
I just want to enjoy that little one sitting there all alone with the 2 bestest parents that could ever be!

Read through all the discussion on naming this sweet little bird. Why don't we just let the name evolve like we did last year. Let the personality of this bird dictate what we call it.
Hidey is pretty good for now, as that is what we see....a little bird hiding. Also, Hidey goes either way...male or female.
And our Belle is looking around and up
maybe find a different spelling....you know how many of us will be calling it Hiney.
