Nest Update

03/20/09:
Not too many meals on Friday, but the eaglets did get one in the early evening.

We hear an eagle was recently seen trying to steal a fish from an osprey at the Refuge. Maybe one of our parents will nab a meal.

Mema Jo said...

I just double clicked inside our Live Feed cam pic & the web started to move again..... It was frozen.... Sometimes I just don't know what trick to try to unfreeze it!

Mits said...

think i have tried every trick in the book that I know how to do.

Mema Jo said...

We may have one more hour of daylight at the OKLA nest

Mema Jo said...

Hedgie - you do see his web, right?

Mits said...

hedgie said...

Well, no wonder no spidey....frozen! There on refresh. Darn!

Mema Jo said...

Has your appetite returned, Hedgie?
Too good of some warm weather days coming up for you to be penned in the house not feeling well.....

Well, dear fowl friends, I am going to leave you for tonight...gonna soak in a tub, put Vicks on my chest and neck and nose and dose up w/ meds and go to bed. Hoping I can sleep the night through (fat chance!!). See you tomorrow. Don't think we need to be on alert anymore for another hatchling, so hope everyone sleeps well! Prayers for all.

hedgie said...

Oh, yes, Jo....it's never been gone...just couoldn't eat anything good until after yesterday's fix of temp. crown. Been chewing fine ever since!!

There's 2 great pics on the Maine forum of one of the NBG eagles flying through the air with a fish. Scroll down to see it- Shelly's NBG pics

deb said...

I sure hope we get a hatch soon at OK nest, I am afraid things aren't looking too good there for the first eggs.

deb said...

Wow, Megan, those are great pictures. Thanks for the link.

Mits said...

wow, what an awesome picture.....thanks, Megan

wvgal_dana said...

floralgirl said...

Thank Shelly, she took the pics, I just stumbled upon them. Such a beautiful capture of an eagle with a just caught fish in its talons.

magpie said...

I'll say a beautiful pair Deb and those turtles are mighty cute too ! ☺

Thanks for that cool link of the NBG Eagle with fish, Megan

floralgirl said...

I love those bluebird pics, Deb.

magpie said...

Okla Eagle just did another egg roll, to me the dark spot on the egg looked bigger...quite a lot bigger

deb said...

Thanks, seeing Bluebirds again sure helps with that spring feeling! We saw a beautiful pair of Spotted Towhees, too, but we were hiking with no camera. :(

floralgirl said...

Darn, I haven't seen a towhee yet, past two years we had a pair that would hang out in the yard for a couple of months. Haven't seen an indigo bunting either.

Mits said...

lol...if you feed the turtles fast enough in a circle, they spin around.....

deb said...

Today was my best viewing of them, Megan. They were right next to us and didn't seem to worried about us.

deb said...

Eagle up, our nest.

deb said...

Those turtles are fun.

Eagle back down. Only happened on live feed, can't say that very often.

Costume Lady said...

Deb, did you find any prarie chickens? Your bluebirds are a breath of fresh, Spring air.

deb said...

Not a one, Wanda!

magpie said...

I've heard a Towhee, Megan...out at Swinging Bridge...
I know another place to to look, Yankaur Wildlife Preserve here in Berkeley County...might be time for a little field trip soon.

I'm hitting the sack! Eyes have been open too long today.

Good Night Everyone...

that view looks a little different at LW

deb said...

I just got a call from some Sioux Falls birders and we are going Kayaking tomorrow! Going to be almost 70, but will have to be careful of the water. We should see lots!

deb said...

Yes, it does, or is it just the way the light is hitting it?

Mits said...

2 racoons at Saline, it is toy night

Mits said...

what fun, Deb....LW view looks closer to the nest.

Costume Lady said...

Those prairie chickens must be very elusive. The two bluebirds were worth the trip in my book!
Hope you see lots of wonderful thing on you kayak trip...don't forget your camera:)

deb said...

There is even a hawk on display tonight at Saline.

floralgirl said...

Have fun, Deb!

deb said...

I won't, Wanda. We should see lots of ducks and geese. The gulls are coming back and I think we will see lots of eagles. It is mostly Juveniles this time of year. The adults are back to their home areas already.

Bob Quinn said...

I'm back. I added today's photos to the end of my last gallery (they start right after the last owl):

Today's Photos

There was an osprey that was being chased by an eagle. It was pretty far away so I had to blow up the photos fairly large so the quality isn't great. There was an osprey on a platform with it's mate eating a fish and it was chased off by another osprey (I think for its fish). I think its mate on the platform was the one the eagle was chasing.

Bob

floralgirl said...

Nice pictures, Bob. I love the picture with the eagle at the top of that beautiful tree, and the red tail hawk flying is beautiful, and the eagle chasing the osprey...they are all great. Thanks for sharing:)
Nite all.....

Mits said...

thanks, Bob, really happy to see the beautiful osprey back in town....pictures are wonderful

Mits said...

Goodnight everyone.

Costume Lady said...

My days are so long now, that I get sleepy early, so I will say goodnight now.
PRAYERS FOR ALL
SEE YOU TOMORROW

deb said...

Absolutely beautiful, Bob. Loved them all, especially the GBH tucked in the shore, the hawk in the tree(sharp-shined??) and the osprey in the top of that tree.

deb said...

Wanda, I like your smiles jokes!

Time for me to get to bed, have to get kayak stuff ready early to go for tomorrow.

Night, everyone.

* Good Morning Everyone *

I'm looking at the Finney Land Nest, and it seems that something or other has been on the nest, fussing on the snow, or else, maybe just normal snow melting action. Haven't seen anything on there yet.

Best wishes for a Great Day of fun and Good Health today. Skies are clear, stars and planets out.

Have fun on your Kayak Trip, Deb...

Leaving for work soon....xox

Nest Update

03/21/09:
We have our first sighting of an osprey!

Based on his white chest it looks like a male. Males usually return first.

If it's one of our residents, he's no doubt wondering where all the sticks went.

The Osprey doesn't look like the same dude as last year. Does he look familiar to you?

I think a couple of pairs scouted this nest last year before the young pair decided to give it a try.

Also, Now that I think of it, the nest has drawn a different pair every year since I've been watching it.

Mits said...

glo said...

Thanks Norma I might get lucky and see an eagle or two but they are pretty much heading north back to their nesting areas. A few nest here and I know there are a couple of nests at the rufge but I am told they are way back out of public access and view for the most part.

Good morning. New thread!

movin said...

Kayaking, Deb! That must be great.

I remember when I was a boy, one of the older kids had access to a folding wood-framed kayak with a waterproofed canvas cover.

I was allowed to operate it a few times, and I'll always remember how fast and quiet it was in the water.

You can take a long stroke in the direction of a duck or a mud hen and nearly run them down before they know you are there. Fabulous compared to the clunky old row boats we had otherwise ... or the homemade rafts we had.

Actually, I was forbidden to play in the slough (closed-off estuary), but I was ordered to go play with the local kids, who were all 2-3 years older than I was, and who invariably headed for the slough to play! A conflict that was never really resolved, and I received some 'corporal punishment' and was (what's the term) ... not allowed to leave the yard for a two week period on several occasions.

C(°Ù¿°)D

Jim

movin said...

I just remembered the term for the incarceration within my yard:

"RESTRICTION!!"

Some others were "grounded" but I was restricted. But when the two weeks were up, I had to go out and play with the same kids, and we were down at the slough again very shortly......

C(°Ù¿°)D

Jim

movin said...

Anyway, I think kayaking is one of the best, fastest and most fun modes of transportation upon the waters.

Have a great time.
