On the subject of Hummingbirds, I'm not familiar with the Anna's species but am very familiar with The Ruby Throated. Yes the male is more agressive during their family raising period but right now the males have already migrated as they leave first. The females still fight over the feeders on a first come first claim basis. But when 30 want to feed at the same time they become more tolerant of each other. I have seen them share the same feed station and sometimes have even seen them stand on each other as they feed.
Here's another example of males sharing. There is at least 4 males in this photo. One has the red breast and the other three you can pick out by their darker heads.
Report on Mom is good this morning. She maintained her BP through the night w/o medication. They are going to let her breathe on her own again today for as long as she can go without being in distress.
Wednesday, September 17 Well the cub has reached a weight milestone. He weighed 512.2 grams this morning, which is over one pound!
On Monday we gave Lun Lun access to the adjacent den. This allows us to offer bigger pieces of bamboo with less worry that she will drag the bamboo into the nest box with her and the cub. Her intake of bamboo is slowly increasing everyday, but she still seems more interested in the leaf eater biscuits and fruit. To make sure she gets a balanced diet, we are trying to encourage her to eat more bamboo and not just focus on the biscuits and fruit.
For those wondering how the other two pandas are doing, both Yang Yang and Mei Lan are fine. As fall approaches, Atlanta is starting to have cooler mornings. This allows Mei Lan and Yang Yang to spend more time outside in the fresh cool air. We have also seen a more playful side of Mei Lan. She has taken to attacking most hanging enrichment items. Earlier this week, her keepers hung a canvas bag stuffed with hay in the dayroom. She kept charging it from the ground and then climbing up the tree to attack it from above. At one point she was hanging on to the bottom of it by all fours and just spinning around. Kate Roca Carnivore Keeper II
Good morning! Taking a quick peek in and then headed outside. Having absolutely beautiful weather. 53 this morning. Woweee!
Wanda, A SNAKE!!!!! OMG How did you sleep? Lights on...I would have done that too! Hope you find it today!
Paula....keeping your Mom in my prayers. Been there...done that! I know how exhausting it is. Take care!
Jo....still having a very relaxing week. Going to a soccer game Saturday, going to get the trailer tomorrow to start loading for our trip to the coast. Just doing what I want to to!!! :)
Hi gang! Catching up on blogs....OMG, Wanda...don't know how you did it....in truth, I am more afraid of spiders than snakes, but have never had to deal w/ a snake on the loose in the house. I've had my share of run-ins with them outdoors...but only once inside and it didn't get away! Hopefully it was just a garter snake and not anything more dangerous....but, yeppers, leaving the doors open would be inviting for a slitherer! Believe it or not, tho', they say that a snake, like a mouse, can fit through a 1/4" crack. Anyway, think I would have been in the RV for the night!!!
My late FIL managed an orchard and one of the tenant houses (which has recently been transformed into a truly beautiful mansion--Dry Run Rd., for you local gals!) was infested w/ black snakes that would come out of the walls whenever the lady played her stereo. Dad called an exterminator who said that it was against WV state law for him to kill them! And, of course, trapping was a joke. WHen earlier renovations were done, scads of skins were found in the walls.
My feeder is in a more confined area, which limits the number that can feed, but especially at dusk when they are tanking up for the night, you will see a bigger group apparently peacefully sharing a feeder.
Hi Jim. Went down in the 40's here last night, but has rebounded now to 70. Another beautiful day. My sil's bro spent two days working for me getting all kinds of outdoor jobs done, and I feel very a peace--everything spruced up and ready for winter, which they are saying may be bad one. Time for lunch, and to check e-mails and cams...BBL.
Did you guys see the cam and report on little Loony??
When I opened it, the little one was alone and squiggling in a bare area of that board with the straw; but soon LL had him in hand and was giving him a bath. Then some feeding, until now, they're back to sleeping and growing.
Hi Everyone---beautiful day. Just checking in---busy, busy here & my Park boss just called to ask about my mousetrap incident!! Squeak, squeak!!!!! He wasn't there yesterday! Wanda, did you find the snake & get any sleep last night???It probably came in since it's cooler at night. Normally they are more afraid of us than vice versa.Good luck! Glad your Mom is better, Paula! Will keep the prayers coming! It's so nice out we would just like to get in car and go to a nice natural area around here!At back of property is a new covered bridge over a ravine & paw paw trees! That's why we have so many zebra swallowtails here. Road is not open thank goodness & it is Park property! Dream on---back to work---later. Just found out that this 'puter CAN get Atlanta!!!! Yippee!!
Eeuuuiiee's have been hanging around a lot. Probably smell the decayed food particles down in the nest. I just woke up from a two hour nap. Feel much better now. lol
Hello eagle friends!! Been a busy day, ain't even had time to blog. Went to Tom's mother's this morning. She is getting around pretty good. Still scares me. Don't want her to walk around without one of us right there. Another fall could be devastating. But she is good, mind is fairly good. We are blessed.
I have been watching a beautiful panda mom hard at work all day. Lun Lun is a great mother!! And Little Luney is getting to look more and more like a panda every day.
nature, when I get there I want you to show me what a paw paw tree is. As a child we sang 'picken up paw paw's puttin in a basket" but I didnt know what they were.
Red if your about, the Anna humbird stays here all year around. I have to make sure there is food in the winter. My camilias and azailas will bloon in Dec. which helps
I was just looking in on Lun Lun and she was cuddling baby Lunny so sweetly, then did a 360° turn and laid down to cuddle him more comfortably. What a life those Pandas have!
Anne Marie, we have a small town about 30 miles up the road called Paw Paw. Think I read that it was named after the trees...been there a couple of times, but wouldn't know a paw paw tree if I was next to it! Loretta??? Help! Any pics of a paw paw? Before I forget...."Good Morning America" on ABC will be broadcasting from Harper's Ferry tomorrow morning! If you all are up and about, tune in to see a little corner of our Eastern Panhandle!
Lynn, I can't believe you are from Hedgesville and don't know a Paw PAW TREE. The leaves look a little like a mitten and the fruits are sorta egg shaped (larger). I think they taste like way-over-ripe bananas. But, interesting.
Wanda, I'm not really "from" Hedgesville!!! Just a transplant from DC!! Even tho' I've been here for 37 yrs.!! Guess I've just not known anyone who knows, either!! What color is the "fruit'?? Oh, BTW...Maridel's MRI is Fr.--insurance company problem...I told her if she'd gone to the ER like I told her to do, they would have done it and then gotten the authorization after the fact.
Evening Eagle/Panda fans! We have good friends in Paw Paw. They lived/worked down here until retirement & went "back home"! I had never heard of that tree until we met them.Plan to visit & spend night w/them in Oct. Leaves are like big ovals, a little fatter at one end.I'll look for a pic.
Thanks, Megan. The leaves look familiar but can honestly say I've never seen the flower or the fuit...sounds yummy since I love both bananas and mango!
Found a pic of the paw paw tree I took on a day when I got off early from work. This Park, farm property, known as Chelsea, is where we have our Exhibit, Museum Support Office. I work there 2 days a week. So nice today, wish I could have gone exploring.
Lynn right now it is 66, the breeze has been out of the NE today, but we did get about 3 hours on the beach, then went for Mexican food...friend is leaving tomorrow late afternoon..going to squeeze 1 more day at beach, she is back at work on Friday
Interesting, Megan. Seems to me I've heard or read something about them someplace in Asia...been a while back, and don't recall any of the specifics. Helen, sounds nice, but 66 with a breeze sounds a little chilly! bright sunshine helps, tho'!

GOOD NIGHT EVERYONE...WAKE UP MASON
So glad the pic I sent of our eagle in nest tonight at 7:22pm was enjoyed ( :
Night, Helen! What's temp like at the beach??

hmm, they are going to have paw-paw ice cream
I have seen these trees hundreds of times, Megan, never knew what they were called.
I didn't even realize we had them in our woods, until hubby brought me a pawpaw fruit the other day.
..is anyone having trouble seeing the nest? Mine is all black and now I cannot even get to the FWS home page...
...Hello everyone.
Nice Pictures NatureNut. I have seen AND eaten Paw Paws, but it has been YEARS...
Sept 21st at the Washington Monument Boonsboro they have the Hawk Watch...
It's on the page you had us go to Megan.
Interesting, Megan. Seems to me I've heard or read something about them someplace in Asia...been a while back, and don't recall any of the specifics.
Helen, sounds nice, but 66 with a breeze sounds a little chilly! bright sunshine helps, tho'!
what a guy, nothing says love like a paw-paw:)
Lynn, that temp is now....it was around 75 today, and supposed to be up to 80 tomorrow
Did you eat it, Megan?
Hi, Margy! Sounded like you had a busy day!
yes, Margy, same here
That sounds better, Mits! How much longer are you staying?
Yeah, but it wasn't ripe, though...I saw that hawk watch, Dana. Often when you go up to the monument this time of year, there is someone up there counting raptors, and it's cool, cause they know all the raptors by sight, so they can tell you what you are seeing.
well either coming home this Saturday or staying til next Friday, letting the weather decide for me
I just tried to reload the website address, and it is just going around and around in circles....quirky.

The immature birds have a grayish (rather than red) head and a black tip on their beak.
