We had screech owls nesting and raising a family close by. Every night we could hear them and we got some great pictures when they landed on our bird bath. They actually sounded like a horse whinney, only drawn out.
Thanks Paula! I definitly saw two today, one head was up and a wing in another location. I sure hope though that there are at least three in OK. Wont be long before we see them as they are so big.
Okay.....I'm confused! (nothing different!) The second chick, was it from an egg that was laid after the first was removed? I LOVED the videos. Thanks Deb for the hatching video.
I have replayed the video over and over. LOL Major business here!! I think it is some kind of bird call, an owl of some kind!
Jack and I were sitting out this evening....end of the day on the back patio and a red shouldered hawk flew through the trees just above our heads. It was fantastic!
I listened to your clip, Paula, and the sound is definitely not a Screech Owl. It sounds closer to something I've heard in the vicinity of the monkey house at the SD Zoo.
Maybe somebody from WV would know...
Could it be a fox barking or calling? Or is it a bird call? Do they keep animals at the Training Center?
Thanks Paula! Loved the videos of the feedings. I do not have neocast, have not downloaded it, therefore do not watch that nest. It is so fantastic!!!!!
Very interesting clip of the call of the Screech Owl, Mema Jo.
It, however, is not really a screech; so what we were thinking was a screech owl as teenagers was no doubt another variety of owl. This one really let out a horrendous, terrifying screech; and since it was very dark, and owls fly so silently, you would never know it was coming.
We had screech owls coming in the evenings to our bird bath. Jack set up his camera on a tripod and took a picture. We laughed when we got the picture back. The owls head had turned completely around and he was staring at the camera. A great picture!
Have not had screech owls in a few years. I really listen for them every night. However, Jack did build a birdhouse for a screech owl, just in case!
Wonder where Delphia's friend is that knows all those bird calls?? Probably was a LOON......... lol This discussion has been interesting to say the least... The Snallygaster I bet it was!
Jim - Sherrie on the ME Forum earlier this month really thought that it was Spirit in some of the pics that had been taken. Anxious to see her reply to Loraine's announcement!
WOW - drove my dogs crazy with those calls...didn't sound like any of those....I am leaning towards fox or coyote...but will have to go listen to more calls first.
Good Evening All. Been checking comments. Strange sound was interesting.Think it sounds pretty close to the fox sound you put on, Paula. Jo, Thx for sea eagle link. I've been trying to type this afternoon's link in several times & get ERROR.
GOOD MORNING EVERYONE... It is 45° here and going up to 82°. Almost the same as yesterday. Going to be a hot one for our babies. My Live Feed is not working this morning. I hope someone else can view the nest and tell us what antics the little ones are up to today.
I am here at work and today i can catch up on my computer work.I am editing through some photos i took last week and keep only the good ones.I may take a hundred or more photos but only a few will be clear. When i get off work the sun is on the back side of the nest and that makes for a lot of shadows.
Good morning everyone. I see no live feed this morning. I am on Thelma's laptop so I can get the still cam. Still haven't figured out what is up with that. She is going through my internet so my internet can't be the problem.
Good Morning everyone. No Live here either. Still on laptop BUT not on desktop. Both computers also come into the house on the same feed as well. Tis just one more mystery. Glad to be able to keep an eye on the nest to some degree however.
Good Morning Sharon... Sorry you can't get Live Feed either. What a bummer. I didn't get to watch the babes very much yesterday and thought I'd make up for lost time this morning, but, NOOOO, someone in Wheeling decided to turn us off for now.:(
Yes, we did, Dana. They were a little salty. First time I have ever had salty crab legs at China City. Mom was really disappointed, so she went to the raw food bar and had the chef cook her a plate of squash, peas, shrimp and sprouts and loved it. She was in no pain at the time (anesthetic still in affect).
Lady Osprey in Scotland is chirping away this morning. Laid her third egg it said. I think I remember someone had put that in a comment on here. Can't remember who though.
Dana, know what you mean about the sound on the Scotland cam. Had to turn it off yesterday to hear the sounds in our nest!
Up early this morning. Going to the zoo with my two children and my three grandchildren. We do not all get together very often, they are so busy. Should be a great day!
Paula, I still say FOX, not coyote!
Have a great day everyone. Hope the live feed is up for you!
MORNIN' DANA!!--You are an EARLY riser too!!---GOING to be another GLORIOUS day here in WV---HOME OF BELLE & LIBERTY--PLUS 3!!!--SUN is shining brightly--temp is 61° now!! --- LIFE IS GOOD--(better if we had a new thread)---ho! KIDDIN'!

Good morning, everyone. It is a nice sunny day here today, headed up in the 60's. Dana, I see the loch ness monster, wonder what it is. Eagle in OR is laying in a snowy nest, darn. I wonder if she laid an egg??
GOOD SATURDAY MORNING TO WANDA, DANA, NORMA, LOLLY AND ANYONE ELSE WHO MIGHT COME ON. I finally get to watch our nest and no live came here either. Bah humbug.
WANDA Sorry to hear your Mom had to go through another procedure, but with all our prayers, hope this will be the one that gets her feeling much better.

Good Morning Jo & Anne-Marie... Anne-Marie, have you met Annemarie. Lol Anne-Marie, did I ever tell you a have a grandson named Brandon also? He is in his last year of college, studying Wildlife and everything that goes with it. He has been a bird lover since he was 2 years old. Everytime he went to visit someone, the first thing he asked was;"Do you have bird nestes?"
I think it is a bluebird Anne - hope it is not the swallow or whatever it was last season that caused commotion. Wanda is the bluebird lady - Need to get her to look at it. It is awfully dark in the nest

Saw a wing move from the 12 position...what's wrong with blogger tonight...ate my video, have to try to reload.
Don't remember Deb saying she would be gone. Beautiful weather - maybe Deb is removing the stump in her back yard! Hope she'll be here soon.
Blogger Cop ate my comment earlier.
my live feed just went down, but it came back up, thankfully
Hi, everyone, I just got caught up on the days happenings. So many side notes to check out, it takes forever sometimes.
Wow, Spirit and Star and a chick at WE. What a day. One person on the IWS site thought the eagles were acting funny this morning and she was right.
I have been to SF. I wish it had been nice and I was outside. Instead in my car all day driving from one end of SF to the other. Cool and windy here.
Here is a video of the hatching of the egg taken from the WE nest with human help:
West End Egg Hatch
Well, blogger won't load it, so I'm putting thru youtube.
There are pics and video of the WE miracle chick at the CHIL forum (IWS forum)
CHIL forum
I forgot to say I got it from the IWS update page that Steph puts out weekly.
Should have done this sooner, video ready at youtube...maybe you can tell us what this was, Lolly
What's that Sound?
Well, too many people on the non neokast link...my WE Pic has been frozen for awhile...
well, been a long couple of days and busy weekend coming up, so I am out of here...GOODNIGHT EVERYONE
Dedication on the WE neokast link
Today's Viewing is Dedicated to Mother Nature.
She's always full of surprises!
I don't know what the sound is, but no one liked it, dogs or eagles. I am going to watch the CHIL link you put up, Paula.
You really captured the sound well...however, I can't ID it.
We need a Birder on here!!
Wray just fed the miracle at WE
Paula Listen to this Screech Owl
Screech Owl
Gene said it sounded somewhat like a Coyote.
Paula, Jack and I both listened to the video. We agree, it does not sound like a screech owl. do not know what it was.
Okay.....I'm confused! (nothing different!) The second chick, was it from an egg that was laid after the first was removed? I LOVED the videos. Thanks Deb for the hatching video.
"Screech" does not mean the call. It comes from Skritch (we think!), meaning small. Screech Owls are small.
Jo, good recording of a screech owl! It is a soft whinney. Also, I do not think it sounds like a coyote.
I have replayed the video over and over. LOL Major business here!! I think it is some kind of bird call, an owl of some kind!
Jack and I were sitting out this evening....end of the day on the back patio and a red shouldered hawk flew through the trees just above our heads. It was fantastic!
Well how about that! Sun has already risen in Finland and there is our Osprey at the nest........
LOlly - you have it right at WE
I listened to your clip, Paula, and the sound is definitely not a Screech Owl. It sounds closer to something I've heard in the vicinity of the monkey house at the SD Zoo.
Maybe somebody from WV would know...
Could it be a fox barking or calling? Or is it a bird call? Do they keep animals at the Training Center?
C(°?°)3
Jim
Only wild animals, Jim.
Don't think it's a monkey!
Anyone watching PH - Mom has been calling out for a long time...can't view it watching neokast.
Still too early for the Norway...
Don't think I will be viewing it very often.. It's 4/19 and only 4:30 am
Thanks Paula! Loved the videos of the feedings. I do not have neocast, have not downloaded it, therefore do not watch that nest. It is so fantastic!!!!!
The sound could be a Peacock. Perhaps someone is raising them nearby.
C(°?°)3
Jim
Jim, that is a very good recording of a screech owl. So, like you say, what you heard as teenagers was another kind of owl.
"Blood curdling" was the term I was trying to think of earlier to describe the sound of what we "called" the Screech Owl as kids.
I'll have to look in Wikipedia again. There are common owls, which we had in the San Diego area, that screech to "scare up" game while hunting.
C(°?°)3
Jim
oooohhhhh- maybe it's the Blair Witch or sasquatch....
Sounds scary to me!!
Megan, you've been watching too many movies. LOL
So funny! My first thought was a coyote, also, but it sounded far off.
Eagle in OR in the snow, again!
That's very good news about Spirit, Mema Jo...very good.
Did you see how much more material they added today?? That's just the sticks you can see on cam #2, there's a lot more off camera.
C(°?°)3
Jim
Wonder where Delphia's friend is that knows all those bird calls??
Probably was a LOON......... lol
This discussion has been interesting to say the least...
The Snallygaster I bet it was!
It is getting dark in OR and eagle is still laying in the nest, maybe spending the night??
Jim - Sherrie on the ME Forum earlier this month really thought that it was
Spirit in some of the pics that had been taken. Anxious to see her reply to Loraine's announcement!
I knew that would happen, she stood up, doing nestorations. Ooh, laid back down.
Snallygaster???? Sounds good to me! LOL
I think it is snowing in Kent, too.
Deb, I have lost the link to the OR cam. Would you please tell me?thanks!
The new Wood Duck cam is fixed, no chicks in sight.

Apparently, the Barn Owl is known to have a horrifying screech, so I did a google for bird calls.
This sounds fairly close to what I was talking about, especially the second recording near the bottom of the paragraph.
Imagine being in the open in a sleeping bag on a very dark night, being almost asleep.....
AND SUDDENLY THIS SCREECH IS HEARD 15-20 FEET OVERHEAD!!

Good night, everyone....

It is getting so dark in OR, I can't imagine she will leave. We will have to check in right away in the morning. She is moving around a lot.
I think I am signing off also. It has been a long day. Wanda, I am glad things went well this morning for your mom. I sure hope this shot works!

WOW - drove my dogs crazy with those calls...didn't sound like any of those....I am leaning towards fox or coyote...but will have to go listen to more calls first.
I am now thinking a fox, but don't know what kind this is...
Fox call
Deb, thanks for the help! Still have not been able to get to it, but appreciate your help.
Paula, I think you got it!
I mentioned earlier....after looking at the sea eagle in Norway, I do not think those are sea eagles that we having seen at the nest in Finland. ?????
Good Evening All. Been checking comments. Strange sound was interesting.Think it sounds pretty close to the fox sound you put on, Paula.
Jo, Thx for sea eagle link. I've been trying to type this afternoon's link in several times & get ERROR.
Okay, I am tired! Time to go relax in a comfortable chair.
Enjoyed playing "Name That Sound!"
Nite all....sweet dreams!
Although that prior clip sounded closest, it's not a gray fox or red fox that I can tell....but could still be that. Here's some more sounds
Coyote sounds
COOL! Reminds me of my daughter's
backyard at night. She's outside Austin.
Going to call it a day.

Good Morning Dana...
First thing this morning; NO LIVE FEED. Bad way to start the weekend.
Glad your Mother enjoyed herself ( : I do keep her in prayer...I do know about "the pain".
New pics of Bob's on BWO and on BWE a cute pic of face of eaglet Lisa has put up.
Lady Osprey in Scotland is chirping away this morning. Laid her third egg it said. I think I remember someone had put that in a comment on here. Can't remember who though.
I do wish we had control of sound on that Scotland nest.

Just missed the heron parent. Was sitting back down when I got to her. Her chicks are cute ones.
Our chicklets ssure do get around the nest pretty good now. They scare me when they sit so close to the top edge of the nest.
No live cam here yet; just checked.
And here I sit, like the rest of (most) of us, without live feed. Now THAT is something I was surprised about. For 2-3 days now I've had live feed all the time. Every time I opened RP the live feed came up. BWAAAAAAH!
