Rain

It is amazing watching the diligence of our adult eagles in protecting their youngsters from the rain. The youngest eaglet is still especially vulnerable as it has the fewest feathers grown in to help protect it from the rain.

paula eagleholic said...

LOL guess Tiny got stepped on once too much today...he hauled off and pecked Middy for it...then tried to stick his head under him!

MITS said...

awww, look at the biggest eaglet, looks like she is trying to protect the other two.

paula eagleholic said...

Someone, somewhere came up with that last year Mits. I can't take credit for it!

Costume Lady said...

Helen, she is feeling better. And, hopefull that she will be doing better in a few days. We did a little shopping today, which is one of her favorite things.

Costume Lady said...

Paula, that is funny...I have noticed Tiny, on occasion, pecking one of his siblings and immediately hiding to keep from getting attacked.

MITS said...

Tiny likes to pretend she is an ostrich

paula eagleholic said...

Heading home, cu later!

TG no yard work tonight...

Sunny said...

Wow! I just came back from dinner, and got to see some major Wingercizes! Our little babies are growing up too fast!

MITS said...

wish they would not practice wing flapping in this breeze

MITS said...

makes me nervous, one wing flap to many and over the side they will go

ceil said...

Tiny's wings were really going. Tiny is in the middle of the pile. Middle looked as if to say get off me and lay down and Tiny did.

paula eagleholic said...

LOL chick was just checking Lib's beak to see if he had any food! Really cute!

paula eagleholic said...

Dad picked up some fish at the back and is feeding Middy, I think

paula eagleholic said...

Sounds like Middy is our noisy one....hasn't stopped peeeping since Dad started feeding.

paula eagleholic said...

Now tiny has turned around to see what else Dad might have

paula eagleholic said...

Lib now eating at the back, w/ his back to the kids. Middy stopped whining, and Tiny moved up closer, but Dad is ignoring him

paula eagleholic said...

Pearl is still facing this way, playing with the grass

paula eagleholic said...

Tiny is scavanging where Middy was eating for scraps

paula eagleholic said...

Now Dad has turned around, giving Tiny and Middy some bites

MITS said...

MITS said...

MITS said...

Lib left and Belle gave him a look that would kill, think she thought he was going to land on her again

MITS said...

she took off in a flash.....

paula eagleholic said...

Was upstairs getting dinner, heard all this peeping...Lib brought back some pine branches...then grabbed a nestover.....kids started peeping

UPDATE FROM ATLANTA

Panda updates

Monday, April 21
It's been very busy at the giant panda building today. Yesterday, Lun Lun's hormone results indicated that she most likely ovulated sometime that afternoon. We introduced Yang Yang and Lun Lun for breeding that evening and again this morning, but they did not successfully breed. Therefore, two artificial insemination procedures were performed on Lun Lun with semen from Yang Yang. Because we were able to monitor Lun Lun's hormone levels so closely (Dave Kersey ran hormone assays on the two to four urine samples we collected per day over the past three days), we can estimate when Lun Lun ovulates quite accurately, which will hopefully give us a good chance for conception. Now that the breeding process is over, it is time to wait and see if Lun Lun becomes pregnant

paula eagleholic said...

That was some tough nestovers

paula eagleholic said...

Sure is a quickie with those pandas...unlike eagles!

As regards the mystery sound during an evening feed (viewable at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PKQuDjg6FrU), the weird almost human-like shriek sounds like fox to me. There are fox on the NCTC campus and that would be my best guess as to the source.

MITS said...

thanks Madison, I didn't know that fox sounded like that.....Belle came down to be the umbrella after chicks called her

paula eagleholic said...

Howdy Madison and Welcome!

I almost forgot, I received this email yesterday...in regards to the what's that sound video that you just spoke about...

I've been lurking on the eagle cam and blog ever since I attended NCTC for training in February and saw the invitation to help identify "that sound". I'm a USFWS employee in Lakewood, Colorado in the IT office. I asked friends who have lived here and in Nebraska all their lives (I'm a transplant from the MD/DC area and worked at NIH, actually in a biochemistry lab), so I can't take any credit for this. They say it is a bull elk sending signals/messages to the female who probably has recently calved. They have three levels of call before they actually "bugle", and this is the first or lowest level. My question is, do you have elk in the WV area??

Love the eagle cam and have fallen in love with those adorable and funny! eaglets!

I forwarded the email to Steve in hopes that he can answer my question - Are there elk on the NCTC campus?

I personally haven't listened to any elk sounds.

MITS said...

well the plot thickens, is it elk, or is it fox????

deb said...

I googled elk in WV and prior to 2006 there were no elk at all. In 2006 they were found in Logan and Boone counties. I didn't find anything after the 2006 article by googling.

paula eagleholic said...

Madison, are you Mark Madison?

MITS said...

well then the ball is back in the fox's court

paula eagleholic said...

I haven't had a chance to look at anything on elk....making movies!

Good morning, world. No rain today, but streets are still wet. Moon is peeking through the clouds, looks cool. 56° in PA, 55° in VA. Not too bad.
Our kids are sleeping alone again, no rain. BW kids are also alone. Osprey flew in to Finland nest, flew out next refresh. Finney's nest MT, and Scotland osprey is on eggs. Only cams open. Later. Will probably not be on much again today, no time. Scotland osprey is just talking up a storm. All have a great eagle/panda day. Eyes to the sky, see the raptors fly!

Suzanne said...

Good grief, Jim, are you still up? Just noticed the time on your last post!

movin said...

Hahaha. Nope, Suzanne. I'm dead to the world.

I did crash early .. after dinner a while .. and then I woke up fairly rested.

Been trying to catch up on email somewhat.

How are you doing?

[:~)]

Jim

movin said...

It's barely getting light on the BWO nest and the female is there already this morning.

Looks like the time is getting close.

Our live feed is still up ... with sound. Songbirds are waking up the tonsils.

movin said...

Talk to you later, Suz...

Happy birding.

Suzanne said...

Wow, never talked to a ghost before! How cool is that! I'm glad you did get some rest, tho!
I'm doing good, thanks for asking. Keeping busy! Oh, had my possum back this morning. That little puppy has grown! he was only about 6 or 8 inches last time I saw him, he's over a foot now, and much much lighter! I fed my outdoor cat breakfast, then got ready to come in, coat on, ready to leave, and lo and behold, there is the possum eating out of one bowl, and my cat eating out of another. Neither happy about the close proximity, though, and they kept eyeing each other. I flicked the light, and the darn thing didn't move, sorta. Just kept trying to eat some more. My cat was pacing, and looking at him. So I started to leave, and the guy got the hint and went around the side of the house again. I've no doubt he came right back after I left. He doesn't run, he just walks, so he's not too afraid. Glad one of us is comfy with the other. I don't know what I would do if he wouldn't leave! He's kinda big now.

Suzanne said...

Oh my, my ghost went back to bed. Sleep tight, Jim. Not much birding for me today, on other computer all day, plus supposed to have someone to train later today. oh joy!

Suzanne said...

Forgot, osprey arrived in BWO a while ago, and still there. Both Finland nests MT, osprey still on eggs in Scotland, and both our babies and BW babies are snuggled together sleeping. Oh, deer in PA.

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

Good morning. Been out of the loop for a while but am trying to get back in it today. Watching these babies try to stay dry!

Suzanne said...

Not sure what is going on, I've lost our cam and a couple others, so I'm thinking my Internet is being monitored. Funny, haven't lost Finland or Scotland. Just the States, and not all of them! Took forever for blogger to update a while ago, so not sure this will post or not. BWO ospreys were mating a while ago, couldn't take pics, either. bummer. Guess it's time to get back to work. wonder if this will post???? Guess we'll find out.

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

Baby Littley is getting to eat now I think.

Suzanne said...

Morning, Sharon. Hope you're feeling better.
Lost a bunch of stuff a little while ago, old PC just quit working. Not sure what's going on. Taking too long today to load anything.
Back to work, later.

Ceil, I've been trying to figure out why, at times, everyone has Live Feed but me. I was without any views of the nest for almost 2 weeks. It has to have something to do with my computer. Maybe I have a bug. Sometimes, if I click on everything that is visible on the Real Player screen, the nest comes into view. It just suddenly pops up.
Has anyone seen the chicklets being feed this morning?
