We have been seeing a small number of comment spams recently. While there have been less than five in the past several days, that's way more than we ever have had in the past couple of years.
So, I'm going to turn on word verification for a time to see if that stops the spam. This will require that you type in a code that blogger will randomly generate before you are able to submit your comment. We'll do this for a few days and see how it goes.
The next step would be a requirement that folks register with the blog in order to comment. I'd like to not have to do that right now.
You regulars know my email, so feel free to let me know what you think of this. If it turns out to be just a pain for everyone, I can turn it back off.

I'm game for trying this procedure to see if it will help to eliminate most the spammers. Most of us know NOT to go there on their comments - but we do have a lot of new bloggers who would be unaware.

Word Verification will keep the automated spammers from posting.
The same classifiers are used to require an extra word verification field on the posting form for potential spam blogs. This makes it harder for spammers to set up automated systems to do their posting, since a human needs to complete this step.

Automated spammers don't detect the word verification or aren't able to type in the "word". In some cases, it actually destroys the program because it doesn't know what to do. Oh don't we all feel bad if Mogul's spammer program was destroyed.
Megan, you can try AOL email, as well as most of their services, for free now days.
I like it, but I've had AOL since I've been on-line, so I might be conditioned to it.
None of them are perfect, but AOL is a big outfit with a lot of services.

I use both outlook express, and comcast e-mail, Megan. OE took awile to get used to, and does not always display the e-mails being sent to me, but I use it to read the blogging posts, because I have the posts sent right to my e-mail

Been out of the office, having a conversation with my cube mate. Evidentally we have a neighbor that thinks he's the listen and tell police. Did not know that, but sure do now.

Thanks Paula pet, I thought I was going mad there.I hate spammers, we had one last year on Mother Hens, WE did a lot of checking and found out it was a bunch of University Students playing silly games, and everytime they posted they used a different name, most confusing in the beginning,but we got our own back and they never returned and we made our site a closed one.

I have been watching this blog. I have learned so much! This is my first time to watch the eagles and I am hooked! I have a couple of questions. Yesterday there was talk about a snowy owl nest. How do I find it? Also, when I log on to the Colorado nest, it buffers and then stops. Any help with these problems would be appreciated. Thanks! Lolly

Welcome, Lolly. I don't watch the owls, so I won't be much help to you there. I know there is a barn owl and a burrowing owl at the WildWatchCams site and then there is an owl at the Colorado site you can't open. I can't open it either.

That cam really scared me because I looked once and snow was all over the nest. I thought, holy heck! I'm here in Charlestown-no snow, and Shepherdstown is plastered! Then, the camera changed back. How weird.

The pic is of two of our Red Shoulder hawks that were raised in our front yard. Three years in a row we had babies, ten in all. Nest and tree now gone. :( But, when we see hawks around, we know they are ours. :)

Hi to all of you out there. I'm finally home from work and awake so far this afternoon. I got the shock of my life when I turned on our cam and saw all that snow and no bird. I about had a heart attack. I just finished reading todays blog, so see that everything is ok. NOw I can reast easier.
I still can't get on in the mornings at school. I am going to have to speak to our technology coordinator and see what is up.

The letters change each time - they have to fill in the extra spot - but probably wouldn't hurt not to post them....
Paula, when you make a video, does it take forever to upload?
It is highly unlikely that the spammers will be able to use the passwords we have. The passwords change each time and the number of letters is different also. Duplicating it a getting it right is next to impossible. Also most of them are automated programs that aren't cabable of typing in any info. If they take the time to actually log in,post and then type a password, they will get bored and leave. Too much effort.
