Day Journal

Got this from Randy Robinson today, thought you'd like to see it:

Ma eagle braved the wind storm Sunday and the snow and ice today....90 ft.up in her sycamore tree.
She is setting on 3 eggs....night and day.
I saw the eagle pair mating this morning.....at least it looked like that....hard to tell from 300 yards.
Maybe for insurance.... if the current clutch of eggs don't hatch.
This is the 3rd year in a row that she has laid 3 eggs.
Pretty unusual...eagles mostly lay 1 or 2 eggs.

A few minutes later she tucks her beak under her wing....like chickens, ducks and other birds do when they sleep. This helps conserve the heat that they loose through their beak.

Well, it's nearly 8pm and quite dark outside. The infrared beam of the nest cam
makes it appear that light is shining on the nest.....but infrared light is not visible to the human eye.
We see this image only because the camera can 'see' infrared light.
Don't know if science has determined whether eagles and other birds can see infrared.
If they can, the infrared light has never seemed to bother the NCTC eagles.
Ma eagle is still resting with her beak tucked under her wing.
If all goes well, the first egg should hatch @ the first week in March.

Yesterday's bad weather turned worse. Freezing rain started last night
and continues today. Everything is covered in a layer of ice, including ma eagle and her nest.
In the picture below, she is spreading her wings ..... the only way she can attempt to keep the nest somewhat dry.
But, when she spreads her wings like this, she looses her own body heat faster.
She is now depending on the male bird to bring her food to maintain her energy and body heat.
After a night and day of freezing rain, her feathers are soaked and she will loose body heat even faster.
This is similar weather to March 2007, which resulted in last years eggs not hatching.
The wetter the nest gets, the harder it is to keep the eggs warm enough to incubate.

It's mid afternoon....still no sign of the male eagle, and no food.
The rain has tapered off but the wind is picking up.
Sun is 'trying' to shine ..... maybe tomorrow will be a little warmer.

By late afternoon, the wind picks up and the male has finally returned.
But......where's the fish ?
Maybe just enough light to catch one before dark.....

Good evening everyone

Mom called earlier to let me know about the intruder male in the Va nest. I hope the original male eagle is around somewhere.

How is everyone...

I can't see the pics either... Interesting - but would like to know where Randy's journal is being recorded.

Didn't we see a headless fish being brought in today ??????

Yesterday I had the photos of the Fast Food Lunch....

Well, glad you asked! Right now I think we're a little confused...

Hey Robyn - there is a possibility that the intruder at NBG is a FEMALE!

Not only is it unusual material and we are unable to see the photos, but I had to give the OK to view it temporarily because the security certificate expired last July.

I think we accidentally got let into the internal email section of NCTC.

I "right clicked" on one of the boxes where the pics s/b, and I wound up in their email section, but I needed a password to go any further.

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY EVERYONE!!!

Good morning, world! Finally made it in, and there is no snow or ice here at all! Black ice on the roads, and very windy, so be careful if you have to go out. 23° in PA, 27° here. Whatever melted yesterday is frozen again. Like the journal, will have to go read everything. I've been worried about Lib and Belle in the ice storm, but looks like Lib is on the eggs, so hope they're alright! Have a lot of catching up to do, so best get to it. All have a great eagle/panda day. Eyes to the sky, see the raptors fly!

have been looking in on Bell , she seems to be sleeping , i guess everyone is in bed by now

Good morning, AJ. Is that Belle? Can't tell, can't see her tail in the IR glare. She hasn't moved in the last half hour or so, hope she's sleeping!

movin said...

HEY, GOOD MORNING, SUZANNE!

I'm really glad to see you made it this morning. Black ice and all.

How's the weather been at your place?

It looks to be turning back to winter again back in that area ... Midwest too.

I just noticed it's supposed to be like a Santa Ana condition here for a couple of days...desert winds, much drier, warmer days, colder nights. It's like a roller coaster for the sinuses.

Have a good day, I'll probably try to get some sleep again pretty soon now. [:~)]

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY, WORLD!

Suzanne said...

Good morning, Jim! Weather is supposed to be nice today, and get up to 40°! Sure hope it does. Roads are clear except for black ice in spots, but easy enough to miss when they'res no traffic! Had a lot of wrecks last couple days with the snow and ice on top of that. No more snow until Sunday night into Monday, another storm coming in. But Monday is a holiday, so I won't have to drive in it anyway. Those Santa Ana winds are driving you crazy, aren't they? Hope there are no more fire threats, tho!!

movin said...

Hi, Suz. Well, I wouldn't say there's absolutely no fire danger, but these winter Santa Ana's are far less likely to result in a serious fire.

That black ice is very tricky and dangerous not only for driving but for walking too.

My first trip back to Minn. c. 1960, one of my uncles took me to a local town to buy something or other. We parked the car and started across the street to a store, I suddenly slipped and turned completely bottom side up, landed on my shoulder!! Took a few more steps and did the same thing.

My uncle thought it was the most hysterical thing he'd seen. Fortunately, I wasn't hurt too bad; so we continued across to the store.

We visited a while and joked about Californians' walking abilities. Then we started back (he'd told me to walk flat footed by then), and I flipped again.

I guess a lot of people break bones slipping on their steps and so forth every year.

[:~)]

Jim

Suzanne said...

Oh Jim, sorry he laughed at you! Black ice is not funny, and yes, you can break bones often! I try to be careful, I'm too old to be hanging out with a broken leg or broken arm or something! Think it was Danelle who fell last ice storm, ended up with a big bruise! Haven't read back, so hope everybody made it ok through these storms!
Didn't really know there was a difference between summer and winter Santa Ana winds, but different seasons, so it makes sense. Just never thought about it, and have never lived in CA, so something I'm totally unfamiliar with!

movin said...

I don't recall many of the winter ones from when I was a kid, but we have them some winters and not others.

High pressure over Utah and the Great Basin area causes them...high winds across the deserts and mountains and all the way to us on the coast.

Then usually within a few days of the wind switching back to normal, we will have a rain storm or two.

Jim

Suzanne said...

Thanks Jim, learned something today! It's a good day! Guess in the summer the winds are really hot and dry, aren't they? What about in the winter? Just dry?

I have not seen Lib (or Belle) move one iota since I've had the cam on...at least an hour and a half. Just wish she'd put her head up a little!

movin said...

I haven't been watching that close, Suz, but the picture hasn't changed a lot since I've been on here.

It could be frozen, both of BW's were earlier.

The adult has not rotated much, so I would guess the cam is frozen.

Look Now!!

[:~)]

Jim

movin said...

Did you see her, Suz?

[:~)]

Jim

movin said...

Anyway, she stood up (disproving my frozen cam theory), turned the eggs, turned herself 180° and settled back down on the eggs.

Think I'll give the Sandman another chance, Suz.

Talk to you later.

Suzanne said...

Jim, had to go downstairs, but I see she has moved! I'm glad you got to see it! I knew the cam was updating, the leaf on the top left changed position sometimes, but couldn't see eagle move at all. Now I feel better!!!

Sleep tight, Jim. Talk to you before I leave if you're up again! Pleasant dreams!!

GOOD MORNING SUZANNE AND HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY TO ONE AND ALL! Good to see you back Suzanne and in one piece. I haven't been on much as I had that bug going around and have been doing a lot of lurking and sleeping between work.

carolinabeachmom said...

I have been worrying with the rest of the gang about our poor Belle and Lib and our eggs with this awful weather.

carolinabeachmom said...

Good morning DAVE, peaceful dreams JIM.

carolinabeachmom said...

Very interesting commentary on the blog last night. I see everyone was wondering about it. Too bad no pics.

Suzanne said...

Morning, Dave and Candy! I can't get the pics to show up either, Dave. Thought it was just me, but I just get a blank box. Sometimes I get the little dreaded red x, and click to show pic, but of course it doesn't. Glad your eagles are alright, Dave! I was worried about the ice storm more than the snow, so glad our eagle is moving around.
Candy, sorry to hear you're feeling under the weather too! Sure seems to be going around a lot this time of year. Fluids and chicken soup! And rest!!

carolinabeachmom said...

Well, have to get on my way to school. There will be plenty of excitement in there today with Valentine madness in the air. :)
You all have a super day, and keep blogging. One day I'll get caught up on my email and blog. I miss being on here.

Suzanne said...

Our eagle awake! Wow, sure looks like a lot of eggs! Quick turn over for them.

Happy Valentine's Day to you too, Dave! And you too, Candy!

Suzanne said...

Candy, have a great day at school! I'm sure the kids have fun at that age with Valentine's!!! They make their own, don't they?

Suzanne said...

NBG eagle in tree, and I guess one on eggs, but can't see him/her. Just the one in the tree. Watched those intruder videos, really neat! Ok, one in tree flew to lower branch, and woke up the one in the nest. Egg turning now, and they're talking to each other. May be shift change, one in tree is getting closer to nest. Ok, one that was one the nest just got back on it after turning eggs.

Suzanne said...

One in tree flew off right by the cam. How cool! Maybe getting breakfast!

Suzanne said...

That was Lib on the night shift, Belle just arrived! BOTH IN NEST NOW.

Suzanne said...

Belle is checking the nest, and Lib's not moving! Think she wants to take over, and he's not budging! He's warm, not gonna get up. Too funny.

Suzanne said...

Both seem to be watching something off to the left, and Belle's feathers are really blowing!

Suzanne said...

Ok, Lib took off, Belle checked eggs quickly and is now on the eggs. Got some cool flying shots, Lib leaving and Belle flying over to the eggs. Try to put them in momsters.

Costume Lady said...

GOOD MORNING SUZ...Welcome back. We sure do miss you when you'r gone, but glad you don't try to drive when the road are so bad.

Costume Lady said...

Sorry I missed CANDY, I seem to be sleeping in a bit each morning and haven't had a chat with her in a long time.
Missed DAVE too. He and Candy both pop in and out so quckly, they don't give us a chance to ask any questions. I had forgotten that the little ones make their own Valentines....they are so cute.

Costume Lady said...

JIM....we are going to have to give you a sleeping aid to get your sleeping pattern back on track.

Suzanne said...

Lib must be in the branches above the nest, Belle keeps looking up there.

Happy Valentine's Day...

Morning Suzanne, Jim, Candy, Wanda.

Curious about the 2 in Va., is it our original pair now? I saw one settling on the eggs and one on a limb...

Suzanne said...

Morning, Wanda! Yup, Candy and Dave are in and out and gone really quickly! And yup, gonna have to give Jim something in a nice hot cup of tea to put him out during his night time! Poor guy can't get his sleeping rhythm going! Thanks, nice to be back. Nice to be able to drive in no snow and ice!

Suzanne said...

Morning, Robyn. I think that's the original pair. I was watching them too.

GOOD MORNING ROBYN...I'll bet you wish you were backpacking also. Sounds like quite an adventure and I know you are the adventerous type.

Robyn said...

LOL Wanda, I can be the adventurous type. He calls when he gets cell service and tells me his journeys. I am envious but prefer a shower at least once a day not every other 3 days in the jungle and humidity...ewww lol. I guess that would be adventurous :)

I do wish to see the Mayan ruins!
