Good morning everyone. So happy to see new bloggers keep coming. This is an awesome pair to enjoy for sure especially when the cam is also doing an awesome job at showing them off. I am just getting off from an overnight but wanted to say Good morning and welcome to the new folks.
.If you want to see how attached you can get to this nest and their care of the young Click on my blue linked name and check out For the Love of Eagles Blog...down on left side near the bottom you will see a link to the Tributes written to our first fledged group in 2006. You will identify with those who wrote and the feelings expressed there especially if this is your first year to watch an eagles nest.
The link to tributes is just above photo of 2006 nestling for those new or haven't read yet or want to reminise (sp) what you wrote. LOL...From there you can find your way to the whole site and memories of year 1 as well. I have deleted the guest book.. way too much spam problems but thank you for visiting if you stop by lOL.
Looks like Huidey is gonna take a nap. It is overcast, foggy and 45° here, only supposed to go up to about 54°. Off to work, try to peek in at 10 to see the NBG banding if I can.
Paula you are right. Greg is the East Coast version of Dr. Sharpe. He was so patient with us and answered any questions and gave us so much information. I also got some sun and because of my glasses I look like a racoon. It was great weather and today it is raining a little. I am the only one in the office so far and the phone is ringing. Guess I have to answer it.
GOOD MORNING EVERYONE... And what a beautiful morning it is! I am trying to get Norfolk up, but all I get is a black screen. I haven't been able to see that nest at all this season. Watched it last time. Don't know what has happened:( Let us know what happens, Deb.
This year the CCB staff have rigged a bag to hold all 3 eaglets at once to lower them to the ground. This should reduce the time for banding and therefore the potential for stress on the birds.

Hi Kids! Just finished putting trip pics in Momster album. I am SO glad Jenny got a pic of THREE eaglets in our nest at Park. That was a first!Mine taken from bus were blurry, but I went there after work, got video of Flapper--will put them on blog tonight. Last night I watched Idol, konked out in chair & got up at 7AM to thundering kitty feet running in the hall! Gotta get to Exhibit shop work for a short while---they have no electric, but I can work on vinyl lettering that is already cut. NUTS, I can't watch NBG there! Will have to go in late!!LOL
They still need to rig the lines. I always forget how long this takes.
The bucket will not reach up to the nest - It will only reach 60 feet and the nest is a good 20 feet or more higher. They will have to climb the rest of the way.
Yes, I am sure the parents are giving them an alarm call to warn them. I see a person. Look at that eagle try to defend the nest. Wings out, defense position.
OOPS! We have mom & dad in our nest... More stick messing around....
NBG really intent on what is going on at their nest. I wouldn't want them to be any older.. at first I thought they were too young to be banded but they are going to be a handful!! This is great viewing.
Julian will hand over the bag to CCB staff Norfolk Botanical: Julian has to swing the bucket around and avoid the arm hitting the tree Norfolk Botanical: They are untying the bag and now bringing it to the table.

Hidey is eating on her own!! (at least trying to)
Parent arrived, tried to move that stick. Just got it to move.

That stick has been all over the nest, need to throw it overboard!
Ha, Lib was wearing the stick, too bad I wasn't recording.
I wish that stick would just be thrown overboard!
I have to agree...someone's gonna get poked in the eye with that stick....

The Blogger has started at NBG for the Banding of the Eaglets.
Eaglet Banding
The truck is approaching the tree.
they won't be able to show the banding this year because the cam is fixed on the nest. They can't move it. All we will get is commentary on the chat.
All we will get to see is the tree climber taking the chicks from the nest and then putting them back.
The kids at the school at NCTC sound like they are having fun playing games today.
The bucket truck is getting into position.
Morning, all!
Trying to play catch up at work!
The tree climbers are putting on their gear.
GOOD MORNING EVERYONE....busy and long day at zoo today....
going to try to watch a little of NBG fun:)
GOOD MORNING EVERYONE...
And what a beautiful morning it is!
I am trying to get Norfolk up, but all I get is a black screen. I haven't been able to see that nest at all this season. Watched it last time. Don't know what has happened:( Let us know what happens, Deb.
poop shoot at NBG, they are getting excited:)
An adult is flying over the nest, knows something is up. All three eaglets are up also.
Helen, when you have time, you should tell us about your trip to Arizona. Bet you have a beautiful tan:)
I will when I can, Wanda, not really tan, just some nice color...I'm very careful when I am out there, even if we are not at pool, sunscreen is on:)
The climbers are ready, getting the bucket set up to raise them. They should be zooming out shortly, I would think.
Those NBG chicks are just too cute...they are up preening, pooping and checking things out...they don't have a care in the world...
they are gorgeous.
All three eaglets will be put into one bag this year to reduce stress on the birds, since the whole process will go faster.
This year the CCB staff have rigged a bag to hold all 3 eaglets at once to lower them to the ground. This should reduce the time for banding and therefore the potential for stress on the birds.
don't forget to put the eagles on full screen;)
wish they had sound.

those eaglets are in for a big surprise;0
Up goes the bucket.
They still need to rig the lines. I always forget how long this takes.
The bucket will not reach up to the nest - It will only reach 60 feet and the nest is a good 20 feet or more higher. They will have to climb the rest of the way.
I wonder when they will zoom back.
Nate is moving the bucket closer to the tree - he is as high as the bucket can go
His first line has gone up into the tree
looks like the eaglets are in the duck and hide position
Yes, I am sure the parents are giving them an alarm call to warn them. I see a person. Look at that eagle try to defend the nest. Wings out, defense position.
Aha, chicks see someone! They are trying to defend the nest, bless their little hearts.
Boy If that isn't a "Get Away from our nest" welcome - I never saw one!
Oh Yes Good Wednesday Morning....
The clouds are getting dark so we are checking radar right now - sorry for the delay
We anticipate showers any moment
The eaglet on the far left is really giving those guys an earfull!
Now they look like they are wondering what is that thing doing.
Nate is in the tree and tim is in the bucket
Tim is now up in the tree - Nate is above the nest and is just about to climb in
If those 3 little rebels aren't 'something else' I don't know what would be!!
Dinner delivered our nest. Both adults.
Hey folks, what cam are you watching with the 3 eaglets???
Lib in the nest first with a fish! Belle right on his tail!! She arrives with lots of noise!
lol...they are watching his every move...
Natie is in the nest. Tim is almost there, Julian is in position in the bucket.
An adult can be seen circling over the visitor center
Boy, they need to move that stick out of the middle of the nest.
Hidey has a stick on his back, too. Lib took off the back. Belle took the fish to the back of the nest.
OOPS! We have mom & dad in our nest...
More stick messing around....
NBG really intent on what is going on at their nest. I wouldn't want them to be any older.. at first I thought they were too young to be banded but they are going to be a handful!! This is great viewing.
Norfolk, link is posted earlier.
norfolk virginia, Vicky
Vicky, we are watching the banding at Norfolk.
They are pulling up the bag
I would have my very 'heavy duty gloves' on to remove them..... lol
You can see Tim has a small camera on his wrist
Wow, 2 eaglets are laying down in the nest, 3rd is keeping an eye on the climbers
he better put gloves on.
At that age, if you do it right you would be okay if you know what you are doing!
The other adult is circling over NATO tower
Rain is starting to fall
looking at their radar, should be a fast shower
Tim has the first eaglet
the bag is in the nest.
SO WHO WANTS TO BE FIRST IN THE BAG?
They are now placing the eaglets in the bag.
They are baggin them up!
How cool was that?
Nothing cuter than an eaglet in a bag!
Cam viewers have the best view at this moment - the view from teh ground is not as good.
Down down down they go!
The eaglets are secured, they are lowering the bag to julian
That third one was not happy at all!
Julian will get them in the bucket and lower it to the ground.
The buckt is on the way to the ground
how awesome is this:)?
So glad that this year has been more successful for them. Last year it took 5 eggs to get Buddy, so this year looks so much better for them!
so I guess the guys just wait up in the tree?
Will they band them in the bucket or go all the way to the ground?
Good morning my eagle land friends! Commode Town IL is still here!!!!
Julian will hand over the bag to CCB staff
Norfolk Botanical: Julian has to swing the bucket around and avoid the arm hitting the tree
Norfolk Botanical: They are untying the bag and now bringing it to the table.
no they will take them to the ground and pull them out I would think, Sharon......soooo happy for them this year:)
WHILE WE WAIT - what in the world are Hidey and our adult eating???
DEB thanks for the commentary.....
Did you mean it was raining in SD
Vicky you have been traveling with BRS all over the country:)
Did you see they are raising money to put a telemetry on one of the eaglets this year. They will track the eaglet until 2012.
Norfolk Botanical: Reese has gently placed thebag on the table and the first eaglet is out
Norfolk Botanical: They are tagging the right leg
Norfolk Botanical: it is an aluminum ribbon band
Haven't caught up on blog yet...took me forever to get Norfolk up....all I see are two helmeted guys, one used a cell phone...where are the eaglets?
No it is raining at the nest, Jo. Nice and sunny here!
Is one of the adults flying around?
You're right Mits but I haven't left Illinois!
Norfolk Botanical: It is colored purple
Norfolk Botanical: Brian is showing the bird to the media
Hedgie - read above the blow by blow description from Deb.... The eaglets are down now and are being banded - no cam available to see this part
Hi Vicky!!
Jo - Lib brought in a nice fish!
Hedgie - the eaglets are on the ground.
The eaglets are getting banded, both adults are flying around.
Norfolk Botanical: There are actually two bands
Norfolk Botanical: They are now measureing the beak
When I watched the black stork banding last year, they didn't remove tham from the nest...the guy stayed up in the nest and did it. SO this is different from what I expected!
One of the bands is probably silver, from the FWS, the purple is probably for the state of Virginia. I am just guessing here, maybe they will tell us.
The purple band is a field readble band, the other band will only be useful if the bird is taken again
Norfolk Botanical: They are now measuring the feet
Norfolk Botanical: They are measuring the feathers
Norfolk Botanical: Reese is taking photos, as are lots of other people
Norfolk Botanical: Dr. Watts is talking to the media - he said they will reach full size half through their growth stage, the rest is learning coordination
Norfolk Botanical: They are taking a feather for sample
Norfolk Botanical: They are weighing the eagle now
Norfolk Botanical: It is a male
From me, I thought they could only tell from a blood sample at this point.
Norfolk Botanical: They are placing the first eaglet back and pulling out the 2nd eaglet
BWO UPDATE.....
04/22/09:
Happy Earth Day!
We continue to see promising signs at the nest, such as new mating shots and a visible nest bowl in the platform.
BWE UPDATE.......
Nest Update
04/22/09:
Happy Earth Day!
We've updated the Eagle Cam Web Log with a new post that explains how our eaglets will start branching in preparation for flight.
Norfolk Botanical: The silver band is going on the 2nd eaglet
Norfolk Botanical: The purple band is going on now
i THOUGHT THAT TOO, dEB?
Norfolk Botanical: The eaglet is watching all the activity very inquisitively
Norfolk Botanical: Reese is taking a close up photo
Norfolk Botanical: Measureing the beak
Same here Deb - DNA from blood sample...
The beak size does help determine sex...
I'll go with the 1 male so far!!! We'll never know which is which once they are back in the nest....
Suz is watching all this with us!
They can tell pretty accurately from measurements and weight whether the eaglet is male or female...but beak and foot measurements...but it's not foolproof. DNA analysis is the most accurate.
Wanda, right click on the Norfolk cam image (the black hole as it is!) and then select Options...choose Network, and then make sure that only HTTP is checked..not the other two items in that little list...then you should be able to watch----I just learned that and it worked for me!
Sure don't know what their note is saying...????LOL!
Norfolk Botanical: Measuring the feathers
Norfolk Botanical: They do not know the sex of this eaglet - the measurements are in between
Norfolk Botanical: They took a feather
Norfolk Botanical: Measuring the feet
Bet those guys are REALLY comfortable just hanging up there waiting...NOT!!
Norfolk Botanical: Weighing the bird
Norfolk Botanical: It is up and looking around - posing for the paparazzi
Norfolk Botanical: It is being placed back in the bag and taking the 3rd one out
Norfolk Botanical: They are placing the first band
Norfolk Botanical: The purple band goeson now
Norfolk Botanical: It is secured
Norfolk Botanical: Julian has place his bucket truck above the crowd to get a good view
Norfolk Botanical: Measuring the beak
they really have this down pat:)
Norfolk Botanical: Dr. Watts holds the bird while Libby Mojica does the measurements. Reese Lukei photos the process
Norfolk Botanical: The 3rd eaglet is a male
Norfolk Botanical: Measureing the wings
Yep! They are getting good at this banding!
Norfolk Botanical: Weighing the eaglet
Norfolk Botanical: It is sitting up and looking around
Oh No! Our nest - there is a floating white feather stuck on the stick in the center - hope 'you know who' doesn't get interested in it! lol
Norfolk Botanical: Dr. Watts is taking the 3rd eaglet to the visitors behind the barriers - much cheering on their part.
Norfolk Botanical: by doing this he is comfortable that it is not streessed
Norfolk Botanical: All three eaglets weigh around 6 lbs.
well good for them, and their parents......
Wow, didn't think they weighed that much already!
would love to see this for real.
I'll bet those folks are going crazy...
I hope their parents are ok......
Norfolk Botanical: All three eaglets are at the fence with the public. Photos are being taken like crazy.
Norfolk Botanical: The biologists are talking with the public - the eaglets are very calm
From me, I would like to know if they are panting. That is one way they would show stress.
All three eaglets are at the fence with the public. Photos are being taken like crazy. The biologists are talking with the public - the eaglets are very calm
lucky people:)
I guess the pictures will tell in time, Deb.
STEVE HAS GIVEN US A NEW THREAD...COME ON OVER*****************************************************************
Norfolk Botanical: We have 2 males and one unknown - the measurements are larger than a male and younger than a female
Norfolk Botanical: Dr. Watts says they look great and appear in good health
Hidey is down in egg well for a nap with a full crop! Adult may be thinking about going up on the limb.....
Sharon and SIssy...don/t see any snow on Bluefield cam...is it over, or just not sticking? Crazy weather! Did Deb say it was raining at our nest? None here...yet!
It is still snowing in Bluefield but not sticking. And yep, the eaglets were panting when they came back. I think they are still afraid to move!
