Well, I sent an e-mail to Greg asking which was the cause of demise. But it wouldn't transmit from the site, so I used an old eAddress from a previous question to e-mail it directly.

I am sure this is the same Frieda as last year, and she and Frodo were successful with all three eyasses then.

Frieda is standing over the dead chick now as the sun is moving over it... I'm not sure she has realized the situation 100%.

Frieda continued to stand over the dead chick (not shading though) until the sun completely covered the ledge... I heated some spagetti for dinner... When I came back she's shading the live chick.

I got a couple of pics, I'll send them to you.

GOOD NIGHT, EVERYONE/GOOD MORNING TO SUZ, WANDA, NORMA AND THE OTHER EARLY BIRDS....

Hey folks...

About the chick that didn't survive: sometimes the parents will consume the remains, sometimes they will remove it from the nest so that the carcass doesn't attract pests and/or predators. Usually, the dead chick(s) will not be near the nest too long after death. The surviving chick appears to be fairly strong; when I was watching early this am and discovered that the chick had died, I saw the live chick turning around to watch the parent.

I don't know if any of you read my previous post (above). This may not be Frieda after all; she could be a young female with no previous experience. Some birds are born to parent, and are very good at it; some just aren't.

As far as the parents' reactions, it's not atypical for a bird to mourn -- yes, they DO mourn -- the loss of a chick/chicks or mate. We had a rehabber friend who had a pair of ravens who were from different places, but who bonded after being taken in for rehab. After several years, Poe died (yes, Poe) and his mate Sarah (I know, I know) stopped eating, stopped talking, stopped playing. She nearly died. Granted, ravens are extremely intelligent birds, but we have seen this same behaviour in other, less intelligent, species.

Only about half of all baby birds live to adulthood, and even less to reproduce.

I have seen for myself that a chick can be doing wonderfully, and then just die. We see it alot, unfortunately, and every time it pains us the same. You'd think that after doing this so long, we'd get hardened to it; we do get attached more to some birds than others, and their loss hits harder, but we feel sad to lose ANY of them.

One of the positive things that will come of this is, the surviving chick will be that much stronger and healthier. At some point, one of the parents will most likely remove the dead chick; but they will focus all of their efforts on only one now, so all of the food will be given to it that would have been shared between 2 (or 3, had that 3rd egg been viable).

If anyone has any questions, you know where to find me ;-)

As always, I am

Your very own,

Bird Girl

I just happened to peek in of Frodocam, and the surviving chick is standing up and even moved around the parent to get into the shade! I think this one will do just fine....

movin said...

I was signed off, but then I saw more at Brisbane....

First, Frieda moved one or other of the chicks so she could shade them both for a while. Then some cloud covered the sun, Frodo brought some dinner, and Frieda eagerly fed the alert, healthy, bright-eyed remaining chick.

In the interim, the cameraman gave us a long shot, and the Mother and chicks are close to the far end of the ledge from where they were hatched (surprises me...same end as pic bottom left of site).

It's 4:30 there, the clouds are still blocking the sun, and the chick is sleeping off the feed with its head against the wall. (The other one is still close by).

Things seem back to normal for the remainder of the family.

Good morning, world. Beautiful night out, bright quarter moon and lots of stars, till I got to Falls Church, and the fog is so thick here you can cut it with a knife! Was I surprised! But warm, 62° in PA, 71° in VA.
We have a beautiful pic on our cam, so hopefully Lib and Belle will pop in this morning.
SD birthing den is totally MT, kids are camping out this morning. Nice night for it.
See where they updated the Frieda and Frodo web page. Hope the last chick makes it and lives and long and healthy life! My pic is in color, love that! Beautiful pics. Frieda is on her baby.
Will try to go see what I missed after I left yesterday.
All have a great eagle/panda day.
Eyes to the sky, see the raptors fly!

Suzanne said...

Well my beautiful color Frieda is now my beautiful B&W Frieda. Nice while it lasted.

Suzanne said...

Didn't see her delivered, but Squiggles is in the birthing den sleeping. There is something small in there that is glowing white with the infrared light. Right by Squiggles butt.

NillaWafer said...

Ho Ho Ho as our beloved Norma would say and Howdy Suz.. Yup still up but heading to bed really soon... Checked OZ cam and mom is on the baby looks like but i dont see a sign of the dead baby so maybe it was removed or down the ledge a piece My oh my time to hit the bed... meds kickin in ... Ya'll have a great day... Jo was there something about dinner in those e-mails?? Geez i better go back n look... Hugs 2 all

Suzanne said...

Morning, Nilla. Hope you feel better, and can get back to sleep. I'll have to go read the blogs, not sure why you're on meds, but hope they help.
Not sure they're gonna remove the chick, it may scare the other one. They weren't really clear about that on their webpage. So sad! I sure hope we don't lose any more babies this season!

Suzanne said...

Guess Nilla went back to bed. Sleep tight, Nilla.
Be back in a few...

Suzanne said...

Was just outside. If possible, fog has gotten heavier than it was. Unreal.
Something was on the BW cam, in the corner, but couldn't tell what it was, just showed up very white on the infrared. Gone now.
We have a fuzzy spot directly in the very center of our cam. At least it stops the glare.
Frieda is standing over her one chick, the other one is still there in the back of her. Darn.
Squiggles is still sleeping, with whatever that little white dot is.

Got this from Steve the other day. Talking about the white glaring spot reminded me.

Once we get the fuel cell in place the guys will deal with the "hot" white levels on the cam signal, which should give a crisper photo.

Suzanne said...

Well, gonna step out for a minute, but not sure we'd see anything if the kids did show up this morning. Whatever that grey splotch is in the center of the cam, it's gotten bigger, and is now covering our nest.

Well, this refresh it went away, so not sure what's going on...

I haven't been able to get on the last two days so this is a real treat. What is going on with Frieda and Frodo's chicks; only one left? It sounds like another sad story in nature is happening in Brisbane.

I hope Mits has calmed down a little bit from all her excitement of being a new grandmother. My thoughts have been with you Mits. Hope all are still doing well.

Haven't had a chance to check even the blogs in two days, so I am way behind. Will try to do so tonight after school.

Have to go for now and finish getting ready, but I am going to leave that beautiful pic of our nest up so I can still peek in as long as one is there.

You all have a GREAT Thursday. Only one more work day to go. Yeah! Suzanne, you have a safe trip home and give Gypsy a hug for me. I guess with my allergies, I will never have another pet. BBL
