Thursday Night

OK.  First off, I am on vacation.  I get very little time away, and am in hot water with my family because I have been checking email and blogs related to work and the cam too much today.

From what I see on the blog comments, there's a lot of emotion going on with today's events, for which I do not have the facts.

If there was an intruder, that would not be an unusual event.  There is great competition now for nesting habitat in the region because the bald eagle has been very successful in recent years. This has happened in several places in the mid Atlantic over the past few years.

It would not be right to have any human intervention in matters concerning wild nature such as this.  It may not be pretty, but nature is not always gentle--it can be brutal.

Everyone please calm down.

I understand why folks would be upset, but let's see how things work out.

Also, based on some of the things I have read in the comments,  I reserve the right to delete any comments on my blog that I consider inflammatory.

I don't know where Rocking Circle R's (Jenny's) comment went! Was surprised she was on again...I am so tired I hate to say I cannot remember exactly what her question was

My eyelids are down to my ankles as many of yours probably are also

I have two Utubes to load and watch, and head to bed for a few hours...

Thanks to everyone for all the information today...tough as it has been to be a part of it

WANDA - where are you ??

Good Night, try to Sleep Sweetly, and let's hope Belle and Paddy O'Joy do too, and the egglet, AND LIBERTY !
xox (( hugs again ♥ ))

Here's the whole video of the intruder. Look at the size of the bird...I think it's a male.

The second video starts with the intruder on the nest the second time....doesn't show the birds entry. But it's the same eagle.

Intruder videos

So nice to see her sleeping after seeing her so upset today. Poor thing. I hope it is a sign that Lib is there, as someone just said.

From JudyB over at WOW....interesting, and these are some of the things I thought of as well!

"To my mind, there is definitely a new eagle on the scene - and I'm seeing a couple of possible scenarios.

- If the new eagle is male, he may have tangled with Liberty. By tomorrow, Liberty may have recovered from the possibly surprise attack - and being a strong and territorial eagle, will escort the intruder out of the district, and with a bit of luck, show up at the nest with a string of fish to celebrate. (That's the outcome I'd prefer, but I've been around long enough to know it's probably not the most likely. But I'll keep my fingers crossed.)

- The new eagle may be male - and may have won a fight with Liberty. I noticed a couple of tears running down my cheeks as I typed that - but it is possible. If we (and Paddy) are lucky, he'll realize that the way to Belle's heart involves fish, and will adopt her family to get a claim on the nest. (I'm not counting on that one - but it could happen.) If we're less lucky, he'll want to remove Belle's current family, so he can start his own.

- If the new eagle is female, with luck Belle has convinced her to move on - and Liberty will return when the coast is clear. From a human perspective, I think he should nobly take on a female invader 1/3 of his age and a whole lot bigger - just because it's the macho thing to do. But eagles (and me once I pause to think) know that's not a good "survival of the species" tactic - so if this is a female vs female battle, he's likely to wait to see who wins, then decide if (assuming the invader wins) he wants to leave with Belle or stay in his territory. Again, with luck Belle will chase the newcomer away, Liberty will show up with fish, they'll do the eagle equivalent of a hug - and all will be well.

- And if it is a new female and she wins - it really is a toss-up if her instinct to feed peeping chicks will kick in - or if her hormones are in a very different place, and she won't do anything to help Paddy (or the other chick, if the second egg should hatch).

We may have a front row seat to learning a whole lot of new information about eagles - but I'd happily trade it all in if we could see Liberty show up with a fish."

Thanks for that post Lynne, from JudyB, very thought provoking

And thanks for the link to the videos Paula...makes the task a lot easier here with me and the dinosaur

Good Night....xoxo

Scott said...

@Lynne2...thanks..

paula eagleholic said...

After thinking about what Randy said, he couldn't positively ID Lib as the eagle above the nest.

I have never heard Belle call out as frequently as she did tonight, not to Lib.

I think it's possible that the intruder is still in the tree...it's a male eagle...and they have called a truce now that it's dark.

I hope not, but that's what I am preparing for tomorrow.

wvgal_dana said...

Thank you JudyB for your comments.
I appreciate the knowledge in the comments. We have seen things like this at other nest too haven't we.
Different types of outcomes.

I'm still praying that in the AM Liberty shows up with food and to relieve Belle.

paula eagleholic said...

Not a ton of posts in the forums at OC but some. Some of the people on the chat were decent.

Lori O. said...

So happy to see you guys are still here! I read Randy's comment.

Scott said...

@paula...Yea, not all of us are bad. :) I was there and found you guys during the turmoil today. :)

PammySue said...

Paula, I completely agree with you. Although I have not been watching as long as you have, I find it hard to believe that it was Lib above the nest. Belle was not happy.

Lynne2 said...

yeah Paula, that was my other scenario too. If this is a male, that would explain why he isn't actually attacking Belle. He look pretty non aggressive to me.

Lori O. said...

Hello and hopeful morning Paula, Lynne, Margy, Pammy, Scott, Dana and all.

Lynne2 said...

oh my it's LORI....it must be WAY past my bedtime! Scott, meet Lori...She is just getting up for work!

Scott said...

:) Good morning Lori...

Lynne2 said...

Now, I have one more scenario (well, 2 actually but I'll not speak of the second). Is it at ALL POSSIBLE, and it's kinda far fetched BUT...could that really be LIB in a bloody wounded disheveled state? So much so that Belle isn't ready to have him come near her or the babies?

PammySue said...

Good morning, Lori.
Where do you work that you have to get up so early . . . or is it late. lol

wvgal_dana said...

There was a mention that Belle had blood on the side of her face. Has anyone seen a picture of that?

Lynne2 said...

dang, 8 hours at work and not one single time out on the cam. Here, every 19 minutes. UGH.

Lori O. said...

It is waaayyyy past your bedtime Lynne and you and our eagle family will NEED REST if you're to make it through another day half as earth shattering as yesterday.

But good morning.

Kate came in thru the night and kept me up to date.

Randy's comment seemed hopeful, but I agree with you all, it's the intruder.

Then again, we've all been at the nest and see how the adult can stay out of the picture, literally, off to the side or above, for a whole day and we just assume they are not there.

Lynne2 said...

I haven't seen a pic of that Dana, and I couldn't get one when I saw it cause I was at work. Not 100% percent sure it was blood, but there was some sort of dark spot near her nostril on the right side.

paula eagleholic said...

Hi Scott, happy you found us here.

JudyB has been around quite a few forums and seen a lot of different scenarios. I certainly respect her thoughts.

Lori, I know I am up to late if I am talking to you right now :) Glad we are here for you tonight...

PammySue said...

Lynne2, some people who are very familiar with Lib say that it was not him. I think wvgal_dana put up pics that showed a difference in the tail feather area. ??

paula eagleholic said...

I videoed that earlier, but just got home a little while ago.

Lynne, it was not Lib. I am 100% sure on that. Check out the link I just posted.

Lynne2 said...

Paula, I guess I thought the other intruder was a female at first because even though it seemed a bit smaller than Belle in the nest, Belle was also defensively postured and fluffed up to (I assume) make herself look bigger.

paula eagleholic said...

And Pammy, are you up this late at night?

paula eagleholic said...

We saw the male at NBG rebuff the female a couple of years ago...and I saw Wray do the same thing at WE this past fall...but she ended up liking him, but it took quite some time...then K01 came back.

PammySue said...

Paula, I am always up late. I am a born night owl. Drove my mother crazy when I was a baby.

Lori O. said...

Selfishly, I'm glad you're here. But the caretaker in me says YOU NEED TO SLEEP to best deal with all of this. The world is different with a little/some rest.

Paula, Lynne, I will truly worry about you guys if you don't sleep.
It's not mentally healthy.

Sorry, but as I say, I am a militant caretaker :) and wouldn't say it if I didn't care about you!
Just looking out for you.

wvgal_dana said...

Yes Lori wouldn't have wanted you to have woke up to this and some of us not be here for you.

I know what I missed. When I read and seen the pictures. I just bawled like a baby.

Robyn said...

Guess I am the only one left, and Belle is still sleeping

Lori O. said...

Absoutely 100% positive that it was NOT Lib. To even debate it anymore is wasting time.

I kept notes on all the little things Paula taught me on ID-ing Lib and Belle, and that was not him.

Robyn said...

oops didn't realize there was a new page

paula eagleholic said...

Lori, don't think you got the sleep you should have either if Kate was giving you updates :)

Lynne2 said...

Paula, I trust your judgment!

So now I am leaning towards, it's a male, not attacking Belle because that wouldn't be good for a male to do if he's looking for a potential mate. A female looking to take over the nest I would think would outright attack her IN the nest. I don't like this scenario. But the fact remains that Lib has been gone a very long time.....

paula eagleholic said...

LOL Robyn, welcome to the other side of the split!

paula eagleholic said...

Hey Robyn, the froggy snakey thingy looks gone again, doesn't it?

Lori O. said...

Sorry, Pammy, went past your question - work near DC and live in Frederick. Long drive and lots to do to stay ahead of the job so I get up early. Won't be doing so much of the job stuff this morning though.

It's nice to have you here.

wvgal_dana said...

We do have to put some hope in what Randy said. That he thinks that was Liberty up in the tree. So I am praying he is right.

Lynne2 said...

Lib is regrouping and planning a strategy to take back his kingdom tomorrow!

Lori, I will be up at 5 to send Steve off to work, but I can go back to bed for a while since I'm off tomorrow. Don't have to be up, really, till 10:30 to get ready for my Dr appt.

paula eagleholic said...

I am having trouble winding down tonight...rushed home from work, watched the grandkids, now back here, trying to get a couple of things done, recycling, etc. I'll get my sleep caught up...eventually!

Paula I can't sleep..hopefully it will hit me soon. Then I can say I'm leaving good night but right now I'm to sad about the events of today. Happy that Belle and Paddy O'Joy is ok.

Lynne2 said...

oh dear, only got 3 minutes this last time. So now I have it up on FF instead. And i got a new commercial. "The Unprepared Man's Guide to Fishing" LOL!

wvgal_dana said...

((((((((((((((((((((THANKS LORI)))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))

Lynne2 said...

I love the Group Hug!

I am having trouble winding down too....

Scott said...

I know one thing, she certainly seems relaxed tonight. I think that would mean that the one above her is either Lib, or she has accepted the other male. I know I wouldn't tuck my head in knowing those talons could hit at any minute. :) One thing I did notice on both of the videos from earlier. Belle and the Intruder in both of them seemed to keep looking up like there was something above them in the tree or flying. Could just be the way they were looking around, but when they mean to look straight up they really crank the neck. Both did in both videos. Just a thought.

PammySue said...

Lori, it is a good idea to leave early to miss that horrible city traffic. My boyfriend doesn't have to, but he gets up by 4 a.m. for that very reason.

Lori O. said...

What can I do to help you Momsters and help find Lib?

I'll be back here - home from work by 11 and I can leave for WV then, we can do a search group, whatever it takes. Count me IN and there.

wvgal_dana said...

For some reason I have it in my mind that recently this season. A male eagle was killed or injured too bad to release. Somewhere around Charles Town.

Does anyone recall where it was?

Lynne2 said...

Yes Scott, I noticed that too in the videos.

wvgal_dana said...

Belle is awake

paula eagleholic said...

Belle up

paula eagleholic said...

Egg clearly showing, and I saw Joy's head

wvgal_dana said...

Seen chick and egg.

paula eagleholic said...

I was looking at the blood on the beak..not sure what it was. Very dark colored.

PammySue said...

Belle was just moving, but my picture is blurry. Just a stretch?

Lynne2 said...

I don't know what we CAN do Lori. We aren't going to get on the grounds of NCTC I don't think. And it is very possible he is still going to come back. But if he HAS been driven off by this intruder, he might be miles and miles away.

wvgal_dana said...

Lori they are not going to let us go on NCTC property looking for Liberty. They won't even let Susan in on Saturday.

Lynne2 said...

oh well, It seems I timed out again at 3m 37s. HOW ANNOYING, what the heck am I doing wrong????

paula eagleholic said...

I don't recall that, Dana. Might have been in your paper over there, but not over here.

Belle tucked in.

wvgal_dana said...

Back to sleep our sweet lady Belle. Get some more rest dear.

paula eagleholic said...

Pammy, I hear ya on the night owl.

Oh well on that doctor show on tv. They said it didn't matter if you ate at night time.

paula eagleholic said...

You may not want to clear cookies, just browsing history

paula eagleholic said...

I'm going to toast up some english muffins, maybe that will help.

Lynne2 said...

OK got it done!

I'm going to say goodnight. I'll see you all in the AM sometime. Or sooner if I can't get to sleep!

Robyn said...

You're right Paula whatever was there is gone or hidden in the shadow. I was reading on the intruder and find it interesting everyones views. I hope whoever it is, is gone and lib returns.

Was discussing it with my mom today she has been keeping up with Norfolk but I remember all that we wtinessed with that nest also int he past, even the eaglet who flew out of the nest and was hanging upside down for a bit before he made his way back up.

OH she was pissed when theJohn from nctc wrote his thing, she said no way is that someone from NCTC

wvgal_dana said...

Night Lynne2 see you sometime tomorrow. Don't know when I'll wake up. Hope you can have a good sleep.

Geula said...

Good Morning/Night/Day! It's 10:20 here in sunny Israel. I've worn out my eyes on all those postsbut I do have some things to say about this "situation"

Geula said...

I'll start from my beginning here at the cam and Eagle Momsters. I was devastated by what happened in British Columbia when the two eggs were not viable and crumbled after many days of watching and waiting and hoping and praying. One of the things that bothered me afterwards was the way that some of people there at the Hancock forum put their own human emotions into the hearts of the eagles...HUMANS feel sad about bad things that happen...eagles don't! Eagles work by instinct. Belle and Lib are good parents because instincts tell them and have taught them that that is the way to be. They're not "thinking" about it...they're doing what eagles have done like forever!. They pair for life because it is the best way that nature can come up with to shorten the courting ritual. Just think of a big bird like an eagle that would have to find a new mate every year and fight off wouldbe suitors and return to their nest to fight off even more males or females!

Geula said...

After I left the Hancock forum I swore off eagles and eaglets "forever" HAHAHA! I had already been bitten by the Eagle Mania! I related the woes of eagledom to an online friend in WV who happened to mention that there's a cam not far from where she lives. I went to see it and got bitten BIGTIME by the Eagle Bug! What a trial to have an addiction to EAGLES and CHOCOLATE at the same time. Oh, I was also mildly addicted to the pandas at Zoo Atlanta! Anyway, I've been an Eagle Momster ever since.

Geula said...

We've been through a lot here...from fluff balls to fledglings...from frozen eggs to new eggs...from tears of sadness to tears of joy! Who here can NOT cringe when a young eaglet does his first poop-shoot? Who here can calmly sit here and not PLEAD with Belle or Lib to give more food to the littlest eaglet? Who can stay dry-eyed when they wake up to an MT nest after months and months of patient waiting for this very moment of fledging?

Eagle-Eyed's Sissy said...

Good morning my wonderful friends. Our precious Belle is tucked in this morning, bless her heart. Hoping for a better day for her and us!!

Lori O. said...

Good Morning Geula and Sissy.

So nice to know Belle is resting and regaining her strength. She really needs it now with POJ and another possibly on the way.

Geula said...

On top part of my computer screen I have a saying that I have learned from here...IT IS WHAT IT IS!

Yes, we fret and we worry and we hope and we pray but the bottom line is: there isn't very much we can do about this situation. I sure hope that if someone at NCTC finds an injured Lib, they would not leave him to die. They won't help Belle to feed her eaglets or take the eaglet and egg from the nest or intervene in any way with nature. I firmly believe in that.

Speculation is what people do....it's a way of coping. It offers hope and eases the burden in case the outcome is not good.

May you all wake up to a good day ahead...and a peaceful one...and if it IS a stressful day, then let's just remember

IT IS WHAT IT IS!

WV sUSAn said...

Hi Geula and Sissy. What a day!!! Just jumping on to say good morning and also hoping for a better day at the nest. B let out couple sounds a few minutes ago then tucked again. Just wanted to check the nest. OK girls I'm going back to sleepy town.

Eagle-Eyed's Sissy said...

Geula, that is exactly right. I know that we have no control over what is going on and must accept the outcome, whatever it is. All the pain and heartache of the past day are so worth it considering all that we have gained from getting to know these eagles and, in turn, each other. God has blessed us beyond belief and I will try to keep that in the front of my mind as they day progresses.

Eagle-Eyed's Sissy said...

Good Morning to you Susan.

Sissy - what's the latest on your surgery?

floralgirl said...

Nice to see Belle sleeping-
Still 53° here now, winds 8 to 10 mph, gonna be another warm day.
Today's nest weather-Mostly sunny. Highs in the lower 70s. West winds 10 to 15 mph with gusts up to 30 mph.

Eagle-Eyed's Sissy said...

Lori, my surgery is tentatively scheduled for next Friday, the 25th. It will be a laparoscopic procedure, 5 small incisions. I will have to be on a pureed diet for 2 weeks, then soft for 2 weeks, and progress as tolerated after that. Supposedly there is a very high success rate for this kind of surgery but they are messing with my stomach and esophagus and that scares me a bit.

Lori O. said...

Great news that it's so successful - that's a little reassuring. You'll have tons of prayers to get thru it.

Good morning Miss Megan!

What I wouldn't give to see Lib flop down in that nest with a big ole fish!!

ROCKING CIRCLE R said...

Good Morning--how is everyone this morning?

Lori O. said...

I've been sending him strength, health and love all night, so now he is ready to kick eagle butt!

Just hoping for all of our eagle family at NCTC to be safe.

floralgirl said...

Up off the eggs- I turned away to get something- is this still Belle

ROCKING CIRCLE R said...

Thank you Belle! What a pretty picture of POJ!!

Lori O. said...

Yes Megan - it's Belle

floralgirl said...

So she just got up and then went back to the nest cup.

Lynne2 said...

I looked away too Megan. When I looked back the eagle was at the top and jumped back down...so I'm not sure. AAARRRRGGGGGG

Lori O. said...

There's the dark spot on the right side of her beak she got yesterday.

floralgirl said...

Yeah, I see that spot now. It's light here now, so hoping to see Lib fly in. Just not sure that intruder is going to give up easily.

Lynne2 said...

did anyone else just hear that weird sound?

Lori O. said...

I can't have sound on in the studio...what was it?

Lynne2 said...

like a bug or something near the mike. And I keep seeing a "something" buzzing around.

floralgirl said...

I din't hear it, Lynne, have sound down fairly low, the dog is going nuts from her calling out.

Lori O. said...

Hmmm - wonder what that is, Lynne?

Meagan, my dogs go crazy/nutso too when she calls out.

Eagle-Eyed's Sissy said...

That is so funny. My dogs think it is the most natural thing in the world to hear eagles calling and bears crying! Doesn't phase them anymore.

I wish one of those geese flying at the nest would drop dead and fall in the nest. LOL

Lori O. said...

I need to take a break and focus here.

((( HUGS )))

floralgirl said...

MY dog looks like he may have a total breakdown if she doesn't stop calling out. This dog is also afraid of stinkbugs, so he has issues.
Belle is up and off the egg cup. Joy is moving around, Belle is really calling out now.

ROCKING CIRCLE R said...

Is Belle crying out? I don't have sound?

Lori O. said...

LOL Sissy! a goose just falls in the nest.

floralgirl said...

Yes, Belle is calling out quite loudly.

Eagle-Eyed's Sissy said...

Still an eaglet and an egg.

Lori O. said...

OK gotta go --

Be strong.

BBL ♥♥♥

ROCKING CIRCLE R said...

Thanks floralgirl answered my question while I was typing it--POJ really moving around!

Eagle-Eyed's Sissy said...

Someone is near, I think.

floralgirl said...

I wish I could slingshot a squirrel into that nest.

ROCKING CIRCLE R said...

Have lots of them here and a slingshot :)

Good Morning at least for our nest I hope it is going to be one. Hi Loria, Robyn, PammySue, Loretta, Geula, Sissy, Susan, Shirley, Megan, Lynne2, Jenny, and our
Lurkers.

So Liberty hasn't shown up yet?

I feel like I never left the blog.

Seen Paddy O'Joy moving around.

Poor Belle she needs relief and food.

WV sUSAn said...

Morning eagle peeps. Sure wish we could see what B is working on. Did she find some nestovers to feed Paddy?

ROCKING CIRCLE R said...

Taking it that she is feeding POJ -- am I right?

ROCKING CIRCLE R said...

Good Morning, WVgal!

floralgirl said...

The only thing there was the eggshell, she seems to be swallowing something

wvgal_dana said...

There was still part of an eggshell in the nest earlier this AM. Maybe that is what she if feeding Paddy O'Joy.

ROCKING CIRCLE R said...

not the eggs shell---it is under her tail right now on the edge of the egg cup

WV sUSAn said...

Paddy sure has been a little trooper. So strong and really mobile already.

ROCKING CIRCLE R said...

The dark sport on her beak is pretty large isn't it?

floralgirl said...

She has settled back down over Joy and the egg cup.

ROCKING CIRCLE R said...

POJ looking mighty strong this morning! The shell is at 6 o'clock under some fluff--it came out on top of one of her talons about 30 minutes ago when she stood up to stretch

WV sUSAn said...

She may have been eating egg shell. Would be a source of calcium. Don't think I've seen that but I don't know
