OK. First off, I am on vacation. I get very little time away, and am in hot water with my family because I have been checking email and blogs related to work and the cam too much today.
From what I see on the blog comments, there's a lot of emotion going on with today's events, for which I do not have the facts.
If there was an intruder, that would not be an unusual event. There is great competition now for nesting habitat in the region because the bald eagle has been very successful in recent years. This has happened in several places in the mid Atlantic over the past few years.
It would not be right to have any human intervention in matters concerning wild nature such as this. It may not be pretty, but nature is not always gentle--it can be brutal.
Everyone please calm down.
I understand why folks would be upset, but let's see how things work out.
Also, based on some of the things I have read in the comments, I reserve the right to delete any comments on my blog that I consider inflammatory.

I am wondering if her cries are for Liberty to come. (tears)
She can't do this alone and hatch that other egg. The egg needs the warmth t hatch. If she leaves to go get food. I don't think the other egg will hatch.
Lib could be out there holding off the intruder and finally fend him off for good, then drop into the nest for a happy ending. It's possible.
I just don't know Dana. I'm pretty certain there was someone in the tree above her all night just from her actions. Whoever it was, sure wish they would bring wushi.
I am hoping when Randy gets to NCTC he will give us an up date on what he see's at the tree and in the air.
well folks, I'm going to go lay down and try to grab a couple of hours sleep before my Dr appt. I hate to leave, but....
OM G, there is a male bluebird sitting on my screen outside the window trying his darnest to get in! Making a huge fuss! Going for camera....
I swear, I don't know if I can do another day like yesterday. Our precious Belle needs some relief (me too)!!

OK I left cam in the truck. By the time I got back, bluebird gone. But he'll be back. He was here yesterday too. He kept hovering just outside the bedroom window and spare room window. He just didn't get on the screen yesterday. Female is always close by. And they were back investigating the BB box out front again!
I'm about ready to go to NCTC in my night clothes. Pack me food and sit on that curve in the road. Watching for Liberty and what is going on !!!!

I see that Bell called out and then flew away. Joy still looks strong and well.
Someone is near for sure. God I would give anything if it were Lib and not the intruder but I believe it is the intruder. Lord, Lord, Lord. She flew away. OMG!
I think she ate the shell and maybe fed some to Joy-it's gone for sure.
POJ is just sitting there waiting on some breakfast, bobbing and weaving.
Some say she is giving the eaglet moisture from her mouth when she does that beak to beak...others say it is sort of a "test run" for the chick to find the parent's beak for food.
She has to get Paddy O'Joy food !!

Joy went round and round and laid down...now peeking back up again.

Dana, you would need an air card, from a cell phone company or the like. I have one through AT&T and it is 60 bucks a month. I suspend it in the winter since I don't use it then and then start it back in April or so. They are very expensive but so worth it. They only work if you have cell service though, not in a dead zone.

Or, if you are in a place that has WiFi, then you could connect through that. Most restaurants have it for free now.

Morning Hedgie-Lynn comments are not good ones. Sorry no Liberty and no food. Belle left and must have had to fight off intruder again at 8:04am back 8:15am. That was last time she left. Since then she has been unsettled and crying out. She was crying out before she left has cried out several times this AM. :(

Morning Red...no we are not happy yet. No Liberty ... no food drop from him. Belle left nest earlier gone 16 minutes. Did not bring back food. Before she left she was crying out like now. So we suspect she chased intruder.

I didn't realize how windy it is there. I read that P'OJ is still looking strong and that we still have an unhatched egg. I'm hearing a lot of scenerios and any one of them is possible.
I have to meet daughter at 10:30am so I am praying I will miss seeing a fish in that nest... I don't care who brings it - I just want one.

I just wanted to mention here that the Outdoor Channel is trying to confirm a post made on their forum from someone saying that the NCTC has confirmed this morning that they've seen both parents at the nest ... the male is sitting high in the tree. Hope this is true.
But which male is sitting high in tree? Liberty or the intruder?
I really just cannot imagine that Lib is there and not bringing food. Just cannot imagine that.

I think the "dirty bird" theory that TJ wrote about on Steve's blog
yesterday could be right. I got a good look at the intruder this morning and she does have other spots of black showing under her white head feathers. I would concur with TJ that the intruder might be a young female that has recently come into adult plumage and is looking for nesting
territory.

I know the wind is bad, but I keep hearing what sounds like soemthig hitting/scraping the microphone.
This is really hard stuff to watch and, once again, can't stop watching. Trying to remember that God is in charge and we have no control over any of this. That is the thing about wildlife. It is not all warm and fuzzy all the time. Nature is brutal sometimes and we have to be willing to accept the bad with the good. And I must remember the good has far, far outweighed the bad!!!! Love you all!

Remember, Randy does have a day job, and watching the eagles probably isn't part of it. I know he is also interested and concerned about what is going on, and he'll let us know any info he has when he can, try to be patient. My guess is the intruder Is hanging out around the nest area, and may be keeping liberty away from it. Time will tell what's going to happen.

GOOD MORNING...
WOWser, what a dramatic day, yesterday! I was able to watch a bit of what was going on, but missed most of it. Glad I did, it is all too heart-wrenching:(
Some of you who know me, were right...problem with GG. She called me and wanted to know where I was and why I hadn't been to her place to take her to the doctor...she had no doctor appointment. Drove into her house and showed her on the calendar that the appointment is next week...."Well, if it is next week, why did you mark it this week...you should wait and mark it next week"! Oh, I'M so confused!! So, after feeding her some liver and a sweet potato and chatting a while, she seemed to understand. I think taking her meds on an empty stomach makes her thought process get scrambled. She finally understood her error on the date and apologized profusely.
When we did get back home and settled down, my internet was down, aparently all night and early morning...still not running right, but good enough to get a message through(if I hurry).

Saw your PIP pic......haven't seen any sign of that since.....but there hasb't been any real attention paid to the egg, either.....suspect that it is no longer viable. It is the least of Belle's concern.
ARGH! Now OC is questioning whether Randy works at NCTC...say they don't anyone named Randy. They are as bad as some of those quacks.
Can't tell if chirping is Paddy or other birds.

An amendment to the previous NCTC post:
Two eagles have been confirmed at the nest as of this morning. One has generally been staying higher in the tree (above the camera). The behavior we are seeing from the adult eagles is a little different from what is typical at this stage in the nesting process. At this point, USFWS staff are working to confirm whether the two eagles that are visible at the nest are in fact the mating pair. We hope to have an update posted on the NCTC web site shortly.

Well, if Randy has an email like Randy@nctc.com, then he has to work there! I'm sure the people on here that email him know the truth.
I have not read the stuff on the OC site. I read two or three comments last night, but would rather get my info here. Nothing against them--I guess many of them are new to watching Eagles (and I have only been watching for a little over a year). I have just been able to learn a lot from the people on here. :)

I agree with Paula on the earlier videos that it looked like a male. I don't think those were anything more than ritual. I couldn't be certain if it was Lib or a stranger, but it looked to me like he might have had a brood patch. Did anyone else notice that?

I hope everyone can find some joy or something to laugh about today and post it here to share. JMHO, but I think that while we wait and worry, it's good to remember and share the nice things with each other to try to keep our spirits up, especially now, and even if we don't exactly feel like it.

Heading for home now and here's my latest thinking. Looking for a bottom line and sorting this out.
Lib is not the problem, hopefully not injured - he is smart and capable. The intruder is the problem and as soon as the intruder is successfully fended off for good LIB will return.
Lib being a smaller male will, as Jim said, only fight a male.
I believe this intruder is now considered to be female. Lib would not fight with a female (and bigger) intruder, but Belle can and apparently has as she's been forced to defend the nest.
Lib simply, as nature dictates, may not be able to get to the nest due to the fact that he can't get past the intruder and must smartly wait this out, too.
With his intelligence, isn't it entirely possible Lib could be lurking and watching, but not be seen by everyone who is searching for him? I hope so.
Please let me know if I can do anything. I'm not used to being inactive in something I care about so passionately.
