Thursday Night

OK.  First off, I am on vacation.  I get very little time away, and am in hot water with my family because I have been checking email and blogs related to work and the cam too much today.

From what I see on the blog comments, there's a lot of emotion going on with today's events, for which I do not have the facts.

If there was an intruder, that would not be an unusual event.  There is great competition now for nesting habitat in the region because the bald eagle has been very successful in recent years. This has happened in several places in the mid Atlantic over the past few years.

It would not be right to have any human intervention in matters concerning wild nature such as this.  It may not be pretty, but nature is not always gentle--it can be brutal.

Everyone please calm down.

I understand why folks would be upset, but let's see how things work out.

Also, based on some of the things I have read in the comments,  I reserve the right to delete any comments on my blog that I consider inflammatory.

Thank you Steve, Please enjoy your vacation and your family. I think that we can help you by calming down and being patient. I apologize for any of my posts today that may not have been in the best judgement. I will do better in the coming days.

Thank you Steve. You are very dedicated. Please try to enjoy your vacation.

Robyn said...

Is that Belle making the noise?

floralgirl said...

Thanks Steve- hope you can enjoy the rest of your time off.
That was Belle calling out again.

ROCKING CIRCLE R said...

I sure wish I had sound--I have the live feed but computer issues aren't allowing for sound :(

stronghunter said...

Thank you, Steve, for the new thread. I will tell the others about it and your message.

We all appreciate the opportunity to communicate on this blog. I think a great many good things have come from it.

Diane said...

I'm posting this again in case it got lost on the other thread:

I'm asking myself why I do this to myself. :-(
Does anyone remember when there was all that upheaval at the Norfolk nest a couple of years ago (I think)? The mom was missing for a few days and an intruder kept coming to the nest. Mom ended up coming back. I don't think we ever knew what the heck happened. So maybe there's hope! I'm trying hard to think positive.

stronghunter said...

Well, I guess I don't have to tell the others. There were zero comments when I logged on a few minutes ago.

ROCKING CIRCLE R said...

mema jo are you on here?

Robyn said...

Diane I remember, my mom and I were constantly on the phone during that time.

Eagle-Eyed Shar said...

Thanks Steve. We have to remember it ain't over until it is over and this ain't over yet. Could you all please wake me up when it is? This has been such an emotional day that started out so upbeat! Had to go out this morning and on the way back home, I ran over a squirrel. Should have known right then that the rest of the day was going to suck. I am going to bed now and pray that tomorrow is better for everybody but especially for Liberty, Belle and Paddy O'Joy! Love you guys! (((((((HUGS)))))))

ROCKING CIRCLE R said...

mema jo just wanted to say hello to you this evening and see how you were

hedgie said...

Jenny, there weren't any pictures in there! Did you already move them??

stronghunter said...

Bo, it is nice to be home. I think I have paid for the two days off with long planning sessions for the subs and working tonight.

ROCKING CIRCLE R said...

yes hedgie I did the last ones in the album.

paula eagleholic said...

Steve, I will refrain from sending you ANY emails while you are on vacation.

Thanks for the new thread.

I can't tell whether Belle is crying our for Lib or at the intruder

BEagle said...

My first thought is that Belle was crying out for Lib. I think he is out there doing what he can.

hedgie said...

Okay....see you did move them. Great, Jenny. Good captures.

paula eagleholic said...

The grandkids are all tucked in...sure has been a nice diversion.

Thank you Randy for your efforts and TJ for your opinion.

floralgirl said...

Hard to tell, I wonder if the intruder is still in a tree around the nest area and what it's going to take for her to be convinced to leave.

ROCKING CIRCLE R said...

thanks hedgie

hedgie said...

Jo, where ARE you? If you aren't here, but you are , and you aren't....where ARE you????

From RANDY:

Jo and All:

Good News.

I walked the trails along the Potomac and around the nest tree till dark.
I saw no injured eagle.
Here's what I observed:

6:30 pm: Belle was on the nest and calm and another eagle was perched
in the branches above the nest. Because Belle did not seem stressed, I can
only assume it was Lib. I had binocs, but due to sun glare could not see
him well.
I did think his feathers looked a little ruffled though.

6:40: After some chatter back & forth, both birds take off and fly toward
the river.
They were both gone @ 30 mins.

7:10: One eagle returned to the nest and shortly after the other returned
to perch above the nest.
Both eagles seemed calm.

8:15: Belle on the nest and calm. The other eagle (Lib ?) is perched above
the nest.

8:45: We have a nearly full moon and I see Belle on the nest (on TV) and
calm.

All quiet on the western front.

Randy

Good night everyone. Thanks for sharing the info from Randy it was so very kind of him to use this evening to check things out for us. At least we know at the moment things appear calm. Rest Belle. Your day has been shared by all of us indeed.

Sleep well everyone. It is so out of our control. Tomorrow could bring the news we all hope and pray for. ((((group))))

PammySue said...

So the eagles flew off together toward the river??
I'm so glad Liberty was not found injured, but I'm still confused. Why would Belle drive Liberty off the nest?

Thank you to Randy for caring and for doing your exploration of the area. ♥

Eagle-Eyed Shar said...

OMG, that is a beautiful report. Thank you Randy. Belle is tucked in her wing right now so she must feel pretty secure. My only question is why no food??

Thanks Lynn for letting me know.

stronghunter said...

Thank you, Randy, and thank you, Lynn for posting the message.

IrisF said...

Bless you Randy for that report, puts my mind to rest a bit, I'll tell you. Just to see Belle tucked in is a Blessing too!

Paula, I love that remark about us all being our own support group!!!

I lurk a lot, but I sure do love you all and post when I can. Why I can't send email to the group is beyond me, but I'll get it fixed one of these days, promise.

Love and ((((hugs)))) to you all - prayers being said for a calmer tomorrow!

A bit of discontnent, but I don't think it's Belle calling out......if so, her mouth is closed!
Head no longer tucked.

PattiO said...

Yikes - I'm so sorry you got disturbed on your vacation Steve! Apologies!

I just want to say Thank You to everyone here. I pop in now and then but mostly stay on the WOW Forum. But I know where to come when somethings happening with Belle & Lib. You all do a great job here. Lots of new people on the OC that don't know them like we all do. Got very confusing today. :(

Belle is still whining - I wish we could see what's going on. I think I'm going to have to turn it off.

Mema Jo said...

Lynn, have you sent that portion of the email from Randy to Lori?
I will if you haven't...Just let me know

stronghunter said...

Good night. I will see you tomorrow. I hope it is a calmer day.

Patricia - thank you for your concern! WOW is a great place to be and I head there when I need to know! Thanks for being with us!

Well, with that good news, I'm off to bed. Hopefully tomorrow will be a much better day. Goodnight all!

Mema-Jo ... it's me, PattiO. :)

Lolly said...

Did any of you watch the bears this afternoon? It was really very interesting and a great distraction! Anyway, Dr. Lynn actually held and kissed one of the cubs. Laurel and I were watching intently...it was great. They did get a collar on Lily. Watched them feeding Lily and Hope grapes. Fantastic!

Yes, I am trying hard to not think of this....it is breaking my heart.

PammySue said...

The last time we saw Belle drive the intruder off was at 7:33 or so. Randy didn't mention seeing that, so maybe he was walking around at that time. Maybe Liberty was already there at that time and they drove the intruder off together.
Would it have already been too dark at that point for Liberty to go find some food?

Robyn said...

Is that Belle being vocal? I am trying (really trying) to avoid reading the OC site as they are fairly negative.

paula eagleholic said...

Do we have a name for the second eaglet, or are we taking nominations. The OD webmaster said they are discussing naming again, and wants to know whether we are taking suggestions, and if so, where would they post the information.

We could set up a thread in their forum for such a purpose.

floralgirl said...

I had to restart the live feed and refreshed the page and the chat under the cam is gone -and there's this message- Due to the high volume of comments and disagreements, the Comments module has been removed. Please join the Forums to discuss EagleCam.

NatureNut said...

How wonderful about the Bears. Maybe some of that tape will be on tonight's Update.

I never read the OC chat, I'm usually just watching cam & don't scroll down that far & don't want to join and comment thetre, too!

I guess WOW is old Maine Forum. I remember PattiO! Haven't been there for awhile, or Finland, or Estonia......so little time ☺

Lolly said...

I am so glad they removed that comment section. Negative comments and disagreements are just not neccessary.

Paula, that might be a good idea.

NatureNut said...

Sounds Good, Megan!

Lolly said...

Do we have name suggestions? Personally, at this poiht I am afraid to name the second eaglet.

paula eagleholic said...

I finally just got thru my emails...I apologize if I wasn't able to return some emails, which now would be old news. I was at work today and had some deadlines to meet (and I didn't get everything done that I should have)...and hadn't been able to check emails before I left work and came up here to my sons.

PattiO said...

NatureNut .. yes, WOW is the old Maine forum. :) I see people posting that the OC chat is shut down but I'm still getting it.

floralgirl said...

I had the chat too, until I refreshed the entire Outdoor channel site, then I got that message. Now it's on the page in bold red letters.

Robyn said...

Not sure if anyone can see my posts or just not answering but I would like to toss Buckles out here as a contender since he was our last WWI vet and from Carles Town WV

Lolly said...

Do we have sound now? It is so quiet.

Our boys are in bed here. We went to the Fort Worth Nature Center today. We did some hiking, but it got very hot! We did not see much. Did see white pelicans and some Wood duck houses. Thought they were interesting.

paula eagleholic said...

Hi PattiO!!

So maybe the chick naming is a moot point...

That email was from 6:40 this evening.

floralgirl said...

My live feed was stopped when you asked that, Robyn, so I'm not sure who was calling out.

floralgirl said...

My sound is on and off...

ROCKING CIRCLE R said...

Good night all. Prayers for a better day tomorrow.

PammySue said...

My sound is intermittent too. I have not heard anything for a while.

TJ said...

O.K. Got back on for a few minutes to see what else has transpired and to talk about a little state policy. First of all, I THINK it is the accepted policy of every state to keep a "hands off" approach when dealing with wildlife. I know here in Missouri it is. A lot of you have wondered why they wouldn't intervene in such a situation. Look at it from this perspective. Lets say tomorrow morning Belle leaves at 7:00 and two hours later she still has not returned. The temperature is 38 degrees and the chick is COLD. We decide to intervene, take the chick/chicks from the nest, and then 45 minutes after retrieval, Belle AND Lib return to an empty nest. That obviously would have been the wrong decision. The point is that we never know how things are going to play out, so it is an accepted rule to let it be. There are exceptions, such as the case with "Buddy" at Norfolk back in 2008. Bye the way, 2008 was the year they had a problem with an intruding female. They lost their first clutch during the intrusion, and then a few weeks later they layed second clutch, of which Buddy hatched. When Buddy was removed from the nest, they had every intention of returning him if possible. That was not possible with the large growth and the diagnosis of avain pox. Buddy would have absolutely died if not for the intervention. The outcome was certain. There are no certainties with your situation. You all may (fingers crossed) wake up to happy nest in the morning. Like I said, I THINK this is the standard policy within most states. I know it can be hard to watch, but most of the times, they generally view a hands off approach as being the best way to go with regards to wildlife. I really, REALLY hope you guys wake up to a happier nest in the morning. Gotta go. Fingers crossed and hoping for the best! Will check back in tomorrow and hope to find better news. Bye all!!

Good late evening, everyone.

I have tried to keep up and now see that Belle is quiet and protecting PJ and the eaglet-to-be. May tomorrow bring peace and quiet and tons of wushi to the nest and to our eagles. Speaking of peace, should the second eaglet join the world, maybe Peace would be an appropriate name after all the stress and upset for the parents (and for us). Just a thought -- PJ and Peace.

Many thanks to Randy for trying to help us and for his report.

Going to turn my light off soon but will leave the night light on for others coming in later. Will be in STown by early afternoon and at the Rumsey early -- 6:00pm -- for those who arrive in town early.

May our eagles rest and recover tonight.

Hi, Everyone!
I decided to stay home from school and do more homework at home tonight.
I'm glad I did! Thank you, Randy, and God bless you for your efforts, and for your message!

Steve, thank you so much for the new thread, and I hope you are enjoying your vacation. I also hope you are not in TOO much trouble with your family!

It is SO good to see Belle resting peacefully with her head tucked. That makes me think that Lib is up in the tree. She would NOT be able to relax that much if the intruder were up there!

I would like to vote for "Peace" as the name for the other eaglet. It just seems appropriate after today.
Don't know about all of you, but I am really worn out tonight after all the goings-on today. I am going to call it a day!

Judie, thanks for the night light. I am making sure that the porch light is on. Prayers have been said for all--eagles, egglets, and people's pets, too!

Would like to welcome those that we don't see here very often, and the newbies today. It's great to have you here!

I'm enabling the eye-scanner security and Dana's thumbprint-scanner security. Sleep well, all, and I will talk to you tomorrow! God bless, and goodnight! Love all of you! :o]

Bird Girl said...

Hello everyone.

I had to stop watching the cam earlier, I just couldn't stand seeing what was unfolding.

Steve, you ABSOLUTELY have every right to delete any comments from this blog that you see fit; we all support you in this, and I know we are all very grateful to you that you keep this blog up for us. We all are sorry that your vacation was interrupted.

Randy, thank you so much for going out there and checking on the eagles for us. It is much appreciated, even if we weren't able to get 100% confirmation that it was, in fact, Liberty.

TJ, we do all really know that they won't intervene, it's just that emotions do run high when there is danger to "our" eagles, and it's only human to want to fix the situation. I am a wild bird rehabilitator, which this whole group knows, and I have discussed this issue with them before. Your points are valid, and reiterate what we do know, even if we don't want it to be true :)

Paula, I know that the OC moderators emailed you to ask you if you would discuss with us if we would "allow" others to have a say. I really don't think any of us Momsters (and Dadsters!) feel that we have special privileges in naming any of the eagles. If you or anyone else wants to set up a forum to discuss that, I'm sure it's completely fine with everyone here. It may be irrelevant if the other egg doesn't hatch, of course. Honoring the last WWI vet is not a bad idea.

Sharon, I'm so sorry you ran over a squirrel, I know I would be completely traumatized by that!

I'm very glad they shut the comments down. I emailed a conversation I had with OC to the Momsters Yahoo list.

Everyone else, here's hoping that tomorrow is a better day for all of us and the eagles too.

Robyn said...

Hedgie they were so negative and some of the things they said really upset me, such as their supposed knowedge of Belle and Lib and how they kept getting negative. I learned to be optimistic due to the changes in my life the past 5 plus years and even though things may not look good believing in hope always helps.

Wildlife is just that, we are allowed to view their world due to technology but is it really our place to intervene? Of course there are some circumstances but instances like today we can only hope things work out.

I have no clue what that is - frog- snake-food. I didn't see it brought in - is it nestovers
Might be a whip to lash out at
the intruder.... lol

paula eagleholic said...

Lynn, if it is food, I can see why she wouldn't be eating...the defense of the nest comes first

Robyn said...

I saw it after she came back the first time and when I looked at the earlier pics I didn't see it but during the day it looked completely different, could be the night making it look to me like a frog. The brain is a great tool and very interesting how it can perceive things to look different due to lighting etc

Mema Jo said...

Lynn, Wanda may has missed it all by her own choosing.. can't say we would blame her. I always wonder if GG is ok when she isn't here.
Hope she will come in to say Good Night.

Have I told you all recently that I Love My Live Feed! Whoo Hoo!
Pray for FISH in the morning!

hedgie said...

I've had it for today. Heading for tub and then to hit the hay.
Thanks for being here today....for sharing all of this trouble, and, of course, our morning O'JOY!!
Hope everyone sleeps well. Prayers and Peace!

Mema Jo said...

Did anyone get pinched today?????
I wore a green shirt and so I am
pinchless.

Mema Jo said...

There she is - awake again!

NatureNut said...

Gonna watch the news. It is a little comforting if Randy's report is correct. I hope TJ will hear of his news. And thank you so much for the helpful information.

May be back later if I don't konk out. For all those hitting the hay, PLEASANT FEATHER GOOD DREAMS!
;>) ☺ ☺ ☺ ♥ ♥ ♥

Mema Jo said...

But only for a second did she have her head up...

hedgie said...

P.S. I saw the blob right after Belle came into nest early afternoon.....didn't really look like she brought it; looked like her talon pulled it up out of the fluff....and she shook it off, and never paid any attention to it.

magpie said...

Jo:
I had a brand new-old T-shirt from Goodwill with Four bright and sparkly shamrocks across the front...though I think getting pinched might have been fun ☺

Robyn
I see things funny a lot...oftentimes think the nest has looked like a "heart"

and I look for things to photograph in the wild that are "heart" things also

paula eagleholic said...

I am thinking that Wanda was at GG's today, because she had the soup kitchen yesterday.

magpie said...

GREAT to read of the Osprey return to the BWO platform, and to see the pictures, (bet someone about fell over when they saw the beautiful creature land at the platform)
AND to read that nest is now on 30-second refresh

magpie said...

Wanda might be trying to plow through all the prior posts....
wonder...
hope she comes over and "be's with us" here soon..
but in the meanwhile, praying that she and her family are all okay

magpie said...

Holey Moley, three year old upstairs is jumping up and down and making quite a racket.
Not cute or fun at this hour

paula eagleholic said...

I am going to shut down from here for tonight, kids should be home soon. Might pop back on when I get home, if not I will see ya'll in the morning.

BIG Hugs to all ♥♥♥

Lolly said...

I see Belle is still sleeping soundly. LOL Guess I better get live feed before I say that. It had stopped. Ok, got it going now and yes, she is asleep.

((( Hugs))) once again for all of you. I am so glad some of you are getting together tomorrow. Hug and support each other!

I am heading to the shower and to bed soon. All our walking in the heat today wore me out. Jack and Laurel both took naps but I was glued to this.

Nite all! Prayers for all God's creatures!

magpie said...

Good Night Paula..
thanks for everything you do for us...safe travel wishes for you when you head back to your roost ♥

magpie said...

and Good Night Lolly also, don't mean to be ignoring ANYONE but am still on the first 200 posts of the old thread

Liberty normally has some brown marks on his tail, doesn't he?

wvgal_dana said...

Delphia if you click on my name go to "Nest of Liberty and Belle". 1st picture shows intruder and difference between it and Liberty. Then go to picture below that one. It shows Liberty with the white area on his brown feathers near the tail. Which the intruder did not have.

Bird Girl said...

Thanks wvgal...I'm confused though about the "Liberty has white on brown tail"...they all have white tails. Do you mean he has brown feathers in his white tail?

Bird Girl said...

And I knew it wasn't Liberty by the way Belle acted. At one point she actually lunged at the other eagle, very clearly saying she didn't want it there!

wvgal_dana said...

No Delphia just before his white tail feathers on the brown feathers. If you look at the picture you will see Liberty has a white area on the brown feathers.

Mema Jo said...

Off I go - down the hall-

Good Night Everyone
Prayers for all
Hugs to all ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

Bird Girl said...

Ohhh he has a white spot on his rump in the brown feathers, ok LOL

I am so so very happy that Randy went looking for Liberty. Yes they are wild but Norfolk went looking for theirs. There was Dr. Sharpie they went looking for the chicks. There have been different biologist that have gone looking for an injured adult eagle or chick/eaglet. If found injured they call a "RESCUE". Which is what we were wanting them to do at NCTC. Thank goodness and thank you Randy for looking for Liberty.

Bird Girl said...

Absolutely, wvagal. If Liberty were on the ground, injured, they wouldn't just leave him there.

I think Belle chucked egg shells n front left of her at last movement. Tucked and resting.

It is nice seeing her sleeping as she is. It has been a while since I have been watching the cam with school and all but what a time to come back.

PammySue said...

Belle is sleeping. :)

wvgal_dana said...

I pray that Liberty comes in early AM and helps Belle out. Brining food and settling on the chick and other egg so it can hatch.

Lynne2 said...

Well, I just finished reading all of the posts from today.

Thank you so much, Randy, for checking on the eagles for us. What an incredibly kind thing to do!

TJ, nice to see you here and thanks for your input as well!

Nice to see some new "faces" and some "irregulars" popping in today during the crisis. I hope when all has settled down, God willing, that you'll all be back regularly!

I don't even know what to think about all of this. I have so many thoughts running amok in my head at the moment.

Lynne2 said...

I am glad to see Belle sleeping with her head tucked. On NBG, I learned that that is the deepest sleep, tucked in. It must mean that she is comfortable enough after today's issues to rest well. And hopefully in part due to the fact (hope) that Lib is above keeping watch.

Lynne2 said...

We had the cam up at work for most of the day. It's across the small room from me, but I can see pretty well. It was difficult to work with all of the chaos going on. Both of the bosses kept coming in between appts and asking how things were going.

I have so many questions about intruders and such. So many questions about what happened today.

I just pray that Lib is OK and that really was HIM in the tree with Belle and that by tomorrow, the intruder will be gone and things will be back to normal.

Lynne2 said...

Belle is up

Lynne2 said...

wing stretch, and I saw O'Joy moving around! No good look at the egg though. She is looking up. She is tucking back in.

paula eagleholic said...

Hi again. Belle is awake, had tucked, then looking around, now tucked again.

paula eagleholic said...

Hi, Lynne, sorry I missed your email earlier today...I was working, too.

Lynne2 said...

Hey Paula! No problem...I figured you were pretty busy.

paula eagleholic said...

Hi Bev, thanks for stopping in. I visited Hancock forum earlier tonight, thanks for all your posts and pictures.

Lynne2 said...

oh and thank you Kittenface for the videos and Frederick Bob and Dana for posting your pictures!

Lynne2 said...

hey where'd Jenny's post go? I see that the OC blog is gone now. It was there when I first turned the cam on here at home, but later there was a post from OC saying they were removing it and when I refreshed it was gone.

paula eagleholic said...

Lynne, they got rid of the comments below the cam. You have to post in the forums they have now, which they have new this year.

Lynne2 said...

I really like the idea of the second chick being named Buckles! But Peace sounds good too, especially after today.

paula eagleholic said...

They have some new threads going...just checked them.

Lynne2 said...

I think I'll be staying away from the forums! I do hope some of the nice people join us here though.

Scott said...

Just saw Belle doing housecleaning on the nest. Saw her pickup half an egg shell and cast it off to the side of the nest. Could be from earlier, or possibly????

magpie said...

Yes, we sure had a lot of support today from many with good knowledge, information, pictures, videos, and comfort

too bad someone who seemed to posed himself as a genuine reporter with "news from the nest" who identified himself as John on the OC, was probably trolling and fleecing us...the "real John" at NCTC is genuine and has helped out in the past on many things
glad that Randy set us straight on that!! NOT, their John, apparently.

We need to stay alert for that kind of tomfoolery ! That dude snuck a lot of negativism in on us

Lynne2 said...

Jim mentioned earlier that a male eagle will only fight another male, and not a female. I had not heard that before, but it makes some sense. Have you ever heard that?

Lynne2 said...

Hi Scott....earlier there was still a half of an egg shell in the nest cup with the new baby and the unhatched egg.

magpie said...

We arenot far from the SPLIT on this thread...be watchful for it !

Tomorrow, is RED FRIDAY, please for the Military, wear some RED in their honor ♥

Well, "tomorrow" is already HERE - it is Friday !

Scott said...

@Lynne2 Yea, I remember seeing that too, and figured she was just housecleaning...

Robyn said...

Hello night owls, weather is fair, frogs are singing and belle is sleeping soundly. Paula do you think she is looking up at lib?

wvgal_dana said...

It has been wonderful how Hancock Forum has kept up with our nest today. Other days too. Of course I am just so thrilled how much they care. Wonderful people in that forum. ( :

I'm going to remain vigil in my prayer that Liberty comes in early AM. To help Belle out and brings food in.

Lynne2 said...

Scott, sometimes they toss the shell, sometimes they eat it or part of it for the calcium content!
