Okay New Day, New Thread. Thanks Steve I will try to get the others over here ☺ Hope your day is a good one. Thanks for all you do for us and the Eagles xo
July 9 is Tai Shan's fourth birthday! Tune into the web cam at 8:30 a.m. to see him get a special frozen treat, a behemoth “cake” made of water, bamboo, shredded beets, and beet juice. The icy masterpiece will be topped with a sculpted “4.”
morning all!! came on to watch Panda Birthday but I cannot get the cam! I had it on earlier but it timed out. I refreshed, closed the page and started over, nothing working. It just says "connecting to media" and then "ready" but nothing happens when I hit the play button :(
Good morning eagle budlets. I am watching Tai with his cake this morning. So beautiful. He is standing up at it now. Dropped and piece and going after it.
Morning all! Happy Birthday, Tai! looks like bamboo is more to his liking than the fuitsicle cake---acts like he's not sure what to do with it! After all my complaining about the "new" neighbor...gotta say he surprised me this morning....went out to get papers and he was mowing...he rode over and asked if I wanted him to mow my road frontage! I accepted graciously. It was done the weekend before mom came, and isn't bad yet, but will look better if he does it for me regularly. SIL's bro did it w/ weed-eater, but this youngster is brave enough to use the mower on the bank like Bill used to do!
Local man found shot in head in DC last night---did not survive. Probably drug related. Worker fell into a vat of chocolate and was killed at a candy factory....Hershey maybe? Didn't catch where.
I'm back. Sharon we have a white faced squirrel with a beautiful white tail that comes to our yard. My neighbor hates all animals. He told his wife to put the nuts out in the alley. I said why they climb up on your fence to eat them. He is Mr. Clean. Good neighbor most of the time. Drinks to much.
I showed Tom my cedar waxwing last night and he told Sissy it was a yellow-tipped mustard bird. So funny. He is good at giving alternative names for stuff. An Alberta Clipper is an Abergail whipper.
Critters here seem stirred up today...squirrels are jumping around like crazy; robin is chasing a jay; neighbor dogs are all barking...maybe one of those unfelt seismic things going on---there was a very minor quake a few days ago near Richmond....Shirley, did you know that??
So sad...Paula, the mama elephant accidently gored the baby while trying to herd it to another area. Vets were not able to save her. My heart aches for them all.
Cute story.....a JFK runway was shut down yesterday when 78 turtles emerged from a nearby bay and crawled onto the tarmac. Diamondback terrapins disrupted flight traffic for nearly 2 hrs. Maybe they were headed to U of M!!!!
Nice long visit from Hidey. Don't suppose we can expect many more.
Very sad about the Memphis baby elephant. They showed the mother her baby so that she would understand and know that they didn't just take her baby away.
No, I did not know about the earthquake in Richmond. Felt one in Culpeper several years ago. It was very strange.
I see the leaves at 12:00--I just thought there was some kind of critter under one of the leaves. It may have been the wind, but there was something white under one of the leaves that kept moving around and looked like it was eating on the leaf. It would be hiding right now if it is still there.
My grandson is spending the day. We are going swimming this afternoon.
My squirrel friend is not bothered even by those loud squeals. The tv is on; maybe that makes a difference somehow. So much noise that he just ignores it.
Checked out the eagle nets in VA site last night. There is one nest in Spotsylvania County, another one down in Caroline County, not too far from King's Dominion.
More like a squawk-box, Jo!!! Cool site, Shirley--thanks. Took a little searching but found the info on Tues. quake....10 miles from Richmond, 45 from you!
I got the info about the VA nests from Paula's link yesterday. If you register, you can go into Google maps and zoom into individual nests. It took me awhile to get registered, but finally did.
I think these people would be interested in the St.Elizabeth's nest situation if they do not already know. Haven't explored fully, but it does have a "contact us" link.
we had one near us several years ago...didn't know it was a quake, just heard some loud noise like a convy of 18 wheelers rolling down the street. It was very strange to hear, and I later found out about the quake.
Oh my Gosh, so glad to see Hidey this morning. It's been sad looking in on an empty nest. Have been enjoying all of your comments and sites that you put in for me. We had a busy fourth at Lake Wateree and had lots of fun.I took my last trip to see the fireworks on the lake though,. So many boats out there the pontoon felt like it was going to turn over on the way back. I'm getting too old. Hope the lady that had the surgery is o.k. I haven't had time today to read all the comments.Everyone take care. Love, Gwen
Good morning, everyone! This will be long but, I hope, helpful.
I have been advised that the more people who bombard an agency the more likely to get attention.
Department of Interior: Donna Margelos at donna_l_margelos@ios.doi.gov (202-273-3413)
Fish and Wildlife Services: David Eisenhauer at david_eisenhauer@fws.gov (202-208-5631)
Destruction of an eagle nest may be illegal if in violation of the Migratory Birds Act of 1918 (although it might be questioned regarding eagles as migratory).
My friend is also a contributor to the VA statewide birdlist and will be submitting a notice regarding the potential destruction of the D.C. nest. He also suggested contacting the Audubon Society, the Sierra Club, and not to forget about the Department of Homeland Security, itself. The more people who draw attention to this the more likely we can save the nest.
It was wonderful to see Hidey for a few minutes today. Wishing everyone a lovely afternoon.
Thanks, Judy. Will definitely start writing more letters. The more contacts, the better! I do think that there needs to be a point of clarification: the article does not specify that the nest tree will be destroyed. It says that 12 acres of trees in the protected habitat will be, which could drive off the eagles because of loss of hunting territory. There is also concern about how much noise they would/could tolerate in the area. We don't want to mislead anyone in our efforts!
Judie, great info and thanks for the great work! I think Lynn is absolutely correct in reminding that the habitat will be destoyed, not the tree itself for when we write our letters.
Lunch time here. We got dumped on big time here this morning, Yankton got 3.67" of rain, we didn't get that much, but haven't heard an official total yet.
I am just glad it is moving out of here, not sure where it is headed after Iowa and Minnesota. I think we have had about 6" of rain this week, time to dry out.
If anyone wants to copy or just for your info, this is the text that I am using in my letters:
Are you aware that there has been a Bald Eagles nest on the grounds of the old St. Elizabeth's Hospital within the city limits of Washington, DC that has been successfully hatching chicks since 2001??? The government is planning to build a new Homeland Security complex at this location and the Federal Highway Administration is planning a new roadway into it that will destroy the forested habitat that protects and nourishes these eagles, our national symbol. Please help fight this unnecessary intrusion. There are other viable access areas. Eagles tend to adapt well to human proximity, but they cannot survive if their habitat is destroyed. Bald Eagles have been removed from the Endangered Species list but they are still protected by federal law. This plan makes one wonder how serious the government truly is in their efforts and responsibility for so doing.
Thanks for the clarification which, I agree, should be taken into account when contacting others. I got confused and absolutely do not want to mislead anyone, especially if they are trying to help! As for Secretary of Interior, I wasn't able to find an email/phone but absolutely think he needs to know about this.
Yesterday I noted that the chick at BWO is somewhat more visible now, and today it is actually standing up like an adult from time to time, which makes it even easier to see.
I sent letter to Ch. 9---WUSA9--under their story idea contact!!! Finished w/ other addresses, too. Will try to locate addresses for the other entities Judy suggested.
Don't know where you are, Helen, but a big THANK YOU for the translation site!! My question to the Italian was, "Do you know if there was a Nicholas Concovia in your family? I am trying to find any relatives that I may have in Italy."
Translation: Italian » English "concovia nicola era il cugino di mio nonno concovia michele antonio figlio di concovia giuseppe zio di concovia nicola" ********************************* "nicola concovia was the cousin of my grandfather concovia michele antonio giuseppe concovia son of uncle concovia nicola"
This is a wonderful site...I will be busy trying to make a familial connection with this guy for the next couple of days...so don't put out the Silver Alert;)
I just got back from seeing the hematologist. My hemoglobin is up to 14. He said he was sure the iron studies would be good too (they have to send those off). I go back in 2 months. YEAH!
Well, eagle friends, I am done working for the day, gonna go kick back for a few minutes, read a book or something. Will check back in on ya'll after while. Holler if anything exciting happens!
Wonderful news from Doc, Sharon!!! Glad you won't need any more transfusions--at least for now! You go girl! Wanda, how cool is that????? You are on a roll! Hi, Jim...will check it out.
Here is the email response I just got from The Humane Society:
Ms. Riner, Thank you for your email.
As a federal government action, there will have to be an environmental review and an opportunity will exist to comment and bring attention to the proposed plan. They will have to address potential impacts to the eagles.

Jim, it does look like fog....but that's not what is messing up the lens! Looks like we are stuck w/ that smudge--may be moisture inside the lens cover, but has not dissipated one bit since cam was fixed the first time!
Yeah, I worked for a solid year getting all the documentation and tests done so insurance would approve it. The night before the surgery, I just about backed out. I am glad now that I didn't. I had it done in October and the following January, my insurance changed their policy on covering gastric bypasses and I probably wouldn't have been able to get approved, so I got it right on time.
Hello, I am new to the blog, but have been watching the baby at Shepherstown for quite a while. Could you please post the link for the Norfolk cam and Finnish. Thanks
Well, I am off to the library, and then back to give my stinky collie a bath. The top of her head smells like skunk, but not the rest of her and there is no skunk smell outside like there is when one sprays. Not sure how this happened!
Hi, Lynne 2---I'm also a big fan of Hancock. Posted a couple pics the other night of Delta. Did you know that last spring a parent brought a black Teddy Bear to Delta nest for the eaglets??!!Best thing we ever saw! Maybe I can find a pic.
Today, Tai Shan turned four years old! The Zoo's commissary staff made him a special frozen treat, a three-tiered “cake” made of water, bamboo, shredded beets, and beet juice. The icy masterpiece was topped with a “4,” constructed with bamboo. Thanks to everyone who came to the Zoo today to celebrate the big day, and to the hundreds of people from around the world who have sent him birthday wishes online.
See birthday photos of Tai Shan and a video about the making of the “cake.”
Found 2 Delta pics + cartoon from last June---on blog. Pal at work is planning to sometime go to Santorini (volcano island, Greece, so I sent her a few pics & a web site. While on the website, I found a LIVE webcam that has 2 positions looking out into the caldera--crater. It appeared very similar to what we saw while there!!!We can go back!! The sun was setting, but one camera is aiming right at it---so an irritating view. The other is a better angle for sun in evening. I'll try to post it later---laundry in dryer. Just found out we're getting company Sat. Eve or Sunday. They are passing thru from TN to PA. Don't know when or if they will spend the night, so will have to fix up EVERYTHING!!!! (I think last minute stuff is rather rude :>0 )
Well, Margy, as well we know, it is the noisy eaglet that gets the fish.....I have also contacted one of our local news guys about the story as did Lynn, so I hope he runs with it! Momsters and Dadsters are a powerful group!
Loretta, the pictures of the teddy bear in the Delta nest are just too funny!!! Thanks for finding them!
Margy, I've got a ISS flyby this evening at 8:46....hope I can remember to actually watch this time and not forget! Do you use Sky and Telescope's website? If you aren't familiar, there's a link on my blog. I love it!
Lynne2 - I haven't but I will check it out. Thanks! Here in Eastern Panhandle WV I don't see a flyby tonight, just Friday night....think I will punch in the Massachusetts zip code and see if there is anything to watch for next week ! ☺
Hope you have clear skies and a good memory for it !
got to run to town to pick up something, BBL TTFN xoxo

hi Deb, when you come over...
All the more room to talk about Pandas and Birthdays ☺
And Eagles of course !
can't believe it has been 4 years....he does not look like a young cub anymore
Oh how sweet, he made us a birthday poopy!!
Handsome fellow!
And a loud woodpecker at NCTC
oh joy:)
The thunder is really rolling here, but most of the storm is north of me.
he wants out, and so does Tian
Tian is such an easy going patient panda
going to look for food, I'm hungry:)
big fish just brought in to Finney's nest
Off to work.
Have a great day Deb, makes lots of money!!
have a good one Deb...
both O's at Finney's feeding the chicks...
I only see one, which Finney, water or land. I always get them confused when ya'll talk about them.
Finney nest is the land nest. Suzanne is the one that named it that long before I sent her the Finland water nest.
the 2nd O did not stay long.
they are getting the cake ready for Tai
Yep, there it is!!
nice cake:)
July 9 is Tai Shan's fourth birthday!

Mei is in Tai's yard, they have put the cake in her yard...hope he sees it, may be too interested in checking out the newer surroundings
here comes the birthday boy.
he has not been in this yard for ages
Everyone sounds happy at the Panda Place !
Happy Birthday Tai Shan
Hope it is your Best One, Ever!
Everyone is so excited!! This is great!
Morning all. Watching Tai.
Happy Birthday to Tai
that's one of the cutest things I have ever seen, Tai and that cake....
☺
morning Sister dear
morning all!! came on to watch Panda Birthday but I cannot get the cam! I had it on earlier but it timed out. I refreshed, closed the page and started over, nothing working. It just says "connecting to media" and then "ready" but nothing happens when I hit the play button :(
I think I'll try to count all the times I hear "Awwww Look "
keep hitting the play button till it buffers....just plain busy
Everybody loves a party!
The cake makers must feel very proud of their efforts !
He sure does like the apples.
Hate to leave BBL
Good morning eagle budlets. I am watching Tai with his cake this morning. So beautiful. He is standing up at it now. Dropped and piece and going after it.
He is going to get his apple. What a bear!
OK, got it now, but I missed the birthday boy!
That is one smart bear.
the bear like his apples...
his momma did not raise a dummy:)
hahahahahaha!! back to the bamboo!! He's adorable!
wish I could walk away from a birthday cake after a few bites and go back to the salad!
Morning all!
Happy Birthday, Tai! looks like bamboo is more to his liking than the fuitsicle cake---acts like he's not sure what to do with it!

hope they let Mei and Tian in the yard for a go at it.
morning Lynn! So glad to hear your chest rads were clear!!!
Sissy, have I seen the name Casto related to your family somewhere??? If so, is Ripley anywhere close to you?
No Lynn, not Casto, Crisco! Ripley is about 2-1/2 hours from here.
what a ferocious Hidey!
MOrning, all.
you can now see that there is an ealget in the nest!!
Hi, Lynne! Thanks! All of the prayers here did the trick---what an awesome group we have!!
What a beautiful sight...
Was gonna say Shirley, you can now see the leaves at noon in the nest...but now Hidey is in the way!!
Sis, knew it started with a C and ended with an O...LOL!!!!
Hidey is so loud, I can hear him here at work! Parent was in the nest first....don't really see any fish...yet...
Lynn - glad everything is A OK
Jo, glad the Germany gang made it back safely.
Margy, when do you leave?
Hidey is still screaming in the nest...adult must be nearby, and Hidey must have be on the fish that we can't see.
Hidey doesn't know it, but he is singing along with Johnny Cash on my computer this morning!
fish in talon, saw it on landing
Now mantling the prey at 2ish
Thanks, Lynne2
...I keep a close watch on this fish of mine.....
Tai is back to the cake.
Local man found shot in head in DC last night---did not survive. Probably drug related.
Worker fell into a vat of chocolate and was killed at a candy factory....Hershey maybe? Didn't catch where.
What in the world is Hidey hollering about?? Whiny baby!!
Hidey still peeping at adult :):)
"It's Mine! All Mine!"
There has to be a parent in the tree. This child is so vocal.
Sounds like adult nearby, flapping.
Hidey says " I'm not cleaning this nest, I am not going to fishing school today, I'll see that fiesty chick if I want to and you can't stop me"
Lib and Belle, meanwhile, are sitting in the tree saying to each other " I hope someday he grows up and has childern JUST LIKE HIM!!"
Time to eat!...sort of...
Eating and warning parent to stay away! Love it!
Squirrel out here just heard Hidey and took off like a bullet.
That's too funny, Sharon.
A half-smart squirrel, Sharon!! Knew the sound was a warning...just a couple hundred miles too far to be a danger!
Darn 15 minute timer!!
This Saturday will be 6 weeks since Hidey fledged.
Such sad news about the Memphis elephant.
Hidey enjoying the fish now, but still warning parent to stay away!!
That is awful about that baby elephant!
What happened to the baby elephant?
So sad...Paula, the mama elephant accidently gored the baby while trying to herd it to another area. Vets were not able to save her. My heart aches for them all.
Cute story.....a JFK runway was shut down yesterday when 78 turtles emerged from a nearby bay and crawled onto the tarmac. Diamondback terrapins disrupted flight traffic for nearly 2 hrs. Maybe they were headed to U of M!!!!

My grandson is spending the day. We are going swimming this afternoon.
I thought she sat on it! OMG!
Squirrel on my back porch doesn't seem too bothered by Hidey's squeals. Don't know why.
Hidey still eating the fish...think he'll eat the whole thing!
Shuttle Endeavor is scheduled for liftoff at 7:39pm Sat. Hope for good weather!!
Good Great Morning!
Between Tai's birthday and watching Hidey eating in the nest - Wonderful!
http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/recenteqsww/Maps/region/N_America.php
cool site
Beak cleaning...looks like Hidey is done, but still fussing!
My squirrel friend is not bothered even by those loud squeals. The tv is on; maybe that makes a difference somehow. So much noise that he just ignores it.
Oh, sad for sure about the baby elephant
Male and female cardinal at my feeder.
Checked out the eagle nets in VA site last night. There is one nest in Spotsylvania County, another one down in Caroline County, not too far from King's Dominion.
Really interesting site.
Hidey must not have finished all the fish,,,,still fussing at parent.
I wonder if we could ever classify Hidey as a 'song bird'!
Thanks, Paula, for the Eagle Nest site.
I think my squirrel doesn't know what an eagle is. Might get eaten someday.
Don't think so Jo. They would throw him off America's Idol. LOL
I wish we could have some feed back on our '15 min idle' as to if it really saved $$. It is a royal pain!
Off to the bank and store and then am getting hair cut today. Have a great day everyone.
Look at that nice full crop...wonder how long he'll stay? Been here about 1 1/2 hours!!
Hard to find our panda - camis moving all around outside.
Have a good cut Ceil
I go around 1 pm....
Hidey does look full. Maybe s/he is just sitting there digesting.
Then again, maybe Hidey wants another fish . . .
More like a squawk-box, Jo!!!

ok if this works I have mastered the "blue link" and if not just ignore me...
WOAH! I did it!!!
Yay!
Magnitude 2.3 at midnight. I probably slept through that one.
Amazing looooooooong noisy visit from Hidey. I missed the parents, but saw the Baby, huh Baby !
Good to see so many friendly faces on here this morning...
Hi Jo and you are welcome, saw your late night good night post last night ...
Paula I leave bright and early Monday morning ☺ and Return late Friday afternoon
Got to do the same as many, to town to the bank and a few other things....
Hope it is a good day for every☺ne.

Glad you had a good weekend, Gwen. Have wondered what you were up to! Sounds like a scary time on the lake! Next year, watch from shore for sure!!!
Judie, you have been busy! Thanks for all of the information.
Since the Secretary of the Interior watches our nest, shouldn't we contact him as well?
Thanks, Judy. Will definitely start writing more letters. The more contacts, the better!

Hi, Jim...will check it out.
Glad you are getting so much rain, Deb... Do you think my uncle's grass in Sioux City might be getting out of control yet?
We're getting warnings of drought and possibility of big fires this season in So Cal.

No, not dieting. I did have gastric bypass back in 2003 and my weight fluctuates a little. Right now, I am 135 pounds below where I started in 2003.
Finnish nest on the water is feeding now.
Is that rain or heavy, wet fog that's soaking that area?

Here is the email response I just got from The Humane Society:
Ms. Riner,
Thank you for your email.
As a federal government action, there will have to be an environmental review
and an opportunity will exist to comment and bring attention to the proposed
plan. They will have to address potential impacts to the eagles.

In case you want to find your representatives to write about the eagle nest in DC:
Who are my representatives?
wow Sharon, that's amazing....must have been a pretty scary thing.
Jim, it does look like fog....but that's not what is messing up the lens! Looks like we are stuck w/ that smudge--may be moisture inside the lens cover, but has not dissipated one bit since cam was fixed the first time!
The adults just got another fish for the youngsters at Finnish water nest.

There is a fresh blog post at Norfolk also...with a beautiful picture of all the eaglets back at the nest yesterday.

Boy, Sharon, you really did get in right under the wire!
Headed out to the pool. BBL
It's raining some at Finney's place.
And because of the different lighting you can see that a large percentage of the trees there ARE 'greening up.'

Hi Everyone!! Happy B'Day, Tai.
Been watching cam & it looks like he's licking a giant pineapple slice! Yum
Well, I've got to get some business taken care of...talk to you later.

see ya Jim! Have a great afternoon on the "Left" Coast!
Hey Loretta!
Hello, I am new to the blog, but have been watching the baby at Shepherstown for quite a while. Could you please post the link for the Norfolk cam and Finnish. Thanks
NBG CAM
Welcome Jim!!
there's an eaglet in the nest right now!
Hancock Wildlife Eagle Nests
Here are some other nests, Jim, I particularly watch the Delta nest.
Loretta that is a RIOT!!! Oh my gosh, I hope you can find a picture of that!!
Thanks Lynne2. I enjoy watching these guys.
your're welcome Jim! I haven't been on this blog very long, but everyone is so great and I love it!
I have been here since 2006 and am so grateful!! These are my eagle peeps!
Tai Shan is trying to communicate with his dad.
update from zoo...
July 9
Now, Loretta, really last minute would be to call you 5 minutes from your house! :)
* Hello Eagle People *
Too much rain for Deb, not enough for Jim...
Hidey peeping near the nest, and Tai enjoying some sweet and crunchy eat treats on his 4th birthday...

Sounds like a skirmish at Sycamore Palace...
Hope the weather evens out across the country....
Good to see everyone, and great reports Sharon
Looks like our group is really going to bat for the eagles and the nest tree at St. Elizabeth's !
Thanks to all for the links and the addresses and the message suggestions...
I still can't get Finland so I guess I am missing out on all the smudge doins' - but I sure miss watching that site!
Gotta go and wash Skunk Skull now....
Just got this in response to my email to the Audubon Society...yay!

Hi Lynne,
Thanks for bringing this to our attention. We were not aware of this plan, and are looking into it.
Thanks again for writing.
