Morning, all!

Cool and crisp this morning...almost like fall, but glad it's spring that's on the way!

paula eagleholic said...

Parent in the nest, standing over Hidey, arrangeing the fluff...or Hiding Hidey I suppose!

Eagle-Eyed's Sissy said...

Good morning Paula! Hidey does camouflage well, doesn't he?

paula eagleholic said...

He sure does...

Eagle-Eyed's Sissy said...

Is tomorrow the day ya'll are getting together up there?

BWO Update:

04/12/09:
We hear from photographer Bob Quinn that there have been only two ospreys on the platform. An eagle tried to divebomb one of the ospreys that had a fish. The eagle was chased away, and then the ospreys mated.

Hopefully this means we have a permanent couple

Mits said...

Good monday a.m. everyone...have a good one.

paula eagleholic said...

I guess so, Sissy. Sorry you aren't closer so you could join us!

Update from HH osprey nest...

12 April 2009
At approximately 5:55 p.m. the male left the nest unattended until the female returned at 6:19 p.m. This is the third time the male has been seen leaving the nest in the past week. We are not sure if he is just out of view of the camera or is about stretching his wings. His absence is raising our blood pressure during those minutes away from the nest. We are so close to possibly having chicks in three years seeing the nest unoccupied and the eggs vulnerable during his incubation time is quite distressing.

I am home today...trying to get some phone calls done...hoping to get the grass mowed later before it rains as well! It really shot up after that last rain on Saturday!

paula eagleholic said...

There was a really small bird at the nest...around 11ish..then it flew off.

paula eagleholic said...

At least 2 eggs at CT osprey

update from Portland RTH nest....

Well I thought maybe we had a hatch, but alas no...she just stood up and there are three eggs in the nest. I was hopeful when I saw the partially eaten pigeon in the nest. Birds of prey typically do not bring much prey into the nest until they have mouths to feed. This reduces the potential for contaminating the eggs. There are exceptions to this rule---last year this pair of red-tails consumed a lot of prey in the nest while they were incubating. This year they have kept the nest much cleaner---perhaps a refection that they are more experienced parents. When I saw the pigeon I thought maybe the moment had arrived....I even thought that I caught a brief glimpse of something white and fuzzy in the nest when she moved briefly. However, it is clear at this point that all three eggs are still at least partially intact (can't see any cracks). The pigeon may be a sign that we are getting close....or not.

Today is the Annual African American Family Day at the National zoo today.....it is a long standing traditon, always the day after Easter

Costume Lady said...

GOOD MORNING EVERYONE...
I see where Portland is 'SEEING THINGS", just as we did. You just want to see something so badly, that your imagination runs away with you:)

Costume Lady said...

Is there an Italian-American day, too?

Mema Jo said...

Good Monday Morning All!
Good to see all of you here today.
Dental appointment this afternoon - JOY!

Mits said...

lol...no, Wanda, and no Polish-American day either.

floralgirl said...

Hello!
The exact origins of the black family day at the zoo are unclear, although by many accounts it emerged out of segregation and discrimination.
One theory holds that in the late 1800s, when black families were barred from attending the White House Easter Egg Roll, they turned to the zoo to hold their own Easter celebration.
Another theory is that it began in an era when black domestics had to work on Easter Sunday in the homes of white District residents. On the Monday after Easter, they were allowed time off from work to celebrate the holiday, so they went to the zoo to picnic and hold their own egg roll.

Mema Jo said...

That is interesting, Megan and makes sense about the origin of the special day.

paula eagleholic said...

Daggone, I was wondering about the Polish American Day too!

Hidey sure is lolly gagging around the nest this morning!

Costume Lady said...

I'm sorry, I was just being facetious! Italion Americans were looked down upon at one time...they were called a derogatory name..."WOPS'

floralgirl said...

No apology necessary, I was just telling the origin of the day, always found it interesting.

Mits said...

they always ask for extra volunteers.....they had a shooting there several years ago, families started to fight and a gun was pulled.....and people shot on Connecticut Ave...

sara said...

Good morning.... Is Hidey having a problem with the one leg stretched out to the side. Been in the same position for awhile now.

Mits said...

yes, we were discriminated against too.

Eagle-Eyed's Sissy said...

Morning everyone!! I put a couple of pics of the lake this weekend on Sissy's pics.

Mits said...

just been watching the Memphis panda, it was at the top of it playground and slid down a slide...

Eagle-Eyed's Sissy said...

I am pretty sure there is not a Redneck American Day either (now THAT is discrimination)!!

Eagle-Eyed's Sissy said...

It's LUNEY time!!

paula eagleholic said...

Wow Hidey is up, check out the wing action!

Look at all those feathers coming in...very visible today! Poop Shoot!

Eagle-Eyed's Sissy said...

Excuse me, has anyone seen my bear? He is missing, just a blue screen!!

paula eagleholic said...

Sara - Hidey is just fine...that's what he looks like laying down and stretched out...he will do that for the nest couple of weeks till those feathers really grown in and he can really start flapping them!

floralgirl said...

Hidey is getting huge.

Eagle-Eyed's Sissy said...

I bet you can just about see Hidey from the road now. Have any of ya'll been out there recently?

paula eagleholic said...

Yes, I remember those terms....Wops and Polacks...still love the Polish jokes!

paula eagleholic said...

Hey Mits, I saw Chrushecki's in the grocery store up here....that's how they spelled them.

sara said...

He was definately stretched out. Just hadn't seen that.

floralgirl said...

When I drove by the nest Saturday, an adult was up in the tree right above the nest, where I think one often is when we can only se Hidey in nest.

Mits said...

I miss them....my Grandmom made them from scratch.....

paula eagleholic said...

Going throu my Mom's stuff....once again found where my grandfather (My Dad's Dad) applied for citizenship...he came over in 1908, I think it was...earlier than I thought. Applied for citizenship in 1922 and was denied...received it in 1927, 3 years before my Dad was born! He had been here almost 20 years, had 9 kids at the time!

Mits said...

Sissy your bear is there.

Mema Jo said...

I still see the 3 eggs in the RTH nest
No hatchings yet

paula eagleholic said...

My Aunt had made copies of all the documents and sent them to my Dad....still looking for one of them...he had to renounce any loyaties to the Czar of Russia, who I believe was in control of Poland during WW1 - is that correct?

Mits said...

good news for this fire-fighter..

Prince George's County fire officials say a firefighter severely burned in a house fire has been moved out of the intensive care unit.

Twenty-one-year-old Daniel McGown suffered burns to his face and respiratory tract when he went into a burning home in Kettering early Wednesday.

McGown's condition has been upgraded to fair and was moved out of the ICU at the Washington Hospital Center over the weekend. Officials say he is walking, talking and eating food from his favorite sub shops.

The investigation into the fire continues. Authorities believe the fire may have been set on purpose.

Eagle-Eyed's Sissy said...

There he is!! Thanks Mits, had to refresh!

paula eagleholic said...

No, Sissy, don't think anyone has been to the nest recently!

Mema Jo said...

Just saw the Hornby eagle do a wing and tail stretch - was able to see the eggs underneath..

paula eagleholic said...

OK, I gotta get off of here and make some calls....BBL

paula eagleholic said...

Hey, Mits...what about fried bread dough? Yum!

Mits said...

wow, Paula, your history sounds a lot like ours.....my dad's mom and dad came over around that time...we thought they were born in Poland, but their birth certificates said they were born in Russia, I think, MM and Ceil would remember more of that....but loved to hear my granmom talk about the trip over on the boat, she was 17.

paula eagleholic said...

Morning, Jo!

Mits said...

I hope if I get to heaven, Grandma is still cooking:)

Mits said...

Hidey looks like a long necked goose laying there.

Mits said...

in addition to the big day at zoo, there is the Easter egg roll at the White house and the Nationals have their home opening...

Still three eggs in HH this morning.

Lolly said...

Good morning all! NBG is having brunch!

Lolly said...

I like to watch NBG, reminds me of our nest last year with the triplets. However, the NBG cam gives me the most trouble. It is always freezing up. Popular cam, I imagine.

Lolly said...

Finding it hard to watch that feeding. Little guy in front is not getting any of the food. :(

Lolly said...

Ok, it is finally getting some food. All is well!

Lolly said...

Hear the children on the play ground.

Costume Lady said...

Lolly, if you will recall, the same thing happened with Tiny, last year. He was alway towards the back of the nest as the other two were being fed. If there were any left-overs when Middy and Pearl were full, he would get fed, If not, he had to wait til the next feeding:( He was the last one to leave the nest, but probably the mosty loved by us:)

Mema Jo said...

Sorta looks as though Hidey has found a nestover of something and is pecking at it

Costume Lady said...

Did you hear Hidey BURP, just now?
I think he is watching the children:)

carolinabeachmom said...

Good Monday morning to LOLLY, DEB, MITS, PAULA, JO, MEGAN, SARA, ee SISSY,WANDA and any others to get on here today!

I have been sitting here reading the blog chatter and watching Hidey moving around in his little egg cup, and thinking how much I have missed chatting with you all.

Mema Jo said...

The feeling is mutual, Candy!
We have missed your early morning chatter with Suz and others!

Lolly said...

Good morning Candy! I know why you are not on here much. You are always on facebook. LOL

I think I just heard Hidey's back up signal. He should back up back into the egg well.

carolinabeachmom said...

Glad to hear that you all had wonderful family days on Easter. Lolly, your pics were wonderful. You keep on losing. Maybe you will get me started trying again. Lately, I just haven't cared much about anything, with things going on back here. BUT depression time is over and I am back with the living, I hope, I have surely missed you all.

Wished I lived a little closer, so I could visit the nest with you all from time to time. We have Josh's graduation from boot camp on June 5th so will be heading to S, Carolina for that. Was hoping you were all planning a gathering sometime after school is out. I have just one more year to go until I retire. I can't wait. My life will be more my own to plan.

Eagle-Eyed's Sissy said...

Hi Candy!! It is so good to "see" you!!

Costume Lady said...

Candy, I've been trying to reach you on Facebook, but you have been too busy gathering special eggs. Did you get them all?
Is Josh joining the service or did I misunderstan?

carolinabeachmom said...

Yes, LOLLY, my sister got me started on facebook to keep my mind occupied on something different. It is ok and kept my mind thinking about facebook and not other things, but it can get a bit boring after awhile.

Parent at our nest.

WANDA Yes Josh is in the Army. He left his job in Winchester as his wife didn't want to be all the way up there; wanted to settle in the triangle area...maybe Raleigh. Well, then the job market took a nose dive; no jobs. She has been very sick and couldn't work either. Life for them hasn't been too good with her sickness. She is not a bite the bullet person and her mother, whom she is very close to, doesn't make it any better. He had to support them somehow, so he joined the Army. They wanted him to go to OCS as he scored in the 99 percentile on the tests, but he wanted to put that off awhile. So he is in Ft. Jackson, Columbia, SC for basic. Went in as a Spec4 or corporal (because of collage, I guess) He went on March 25th, has written 2 short information letters to us, the parents, and did give us a short surprise call yeaterday. He has been put in charge of a unit of kids. He seems to want to make a career out of it and sounds very satisfied so far with his decision.

I having James in Viet Nam, never wanted him to even see a gun let alone learn to kill. So I have had a very hard time of it. And the unhappiness of his marriage got to me also.

We have a lot of his stuff at our house plus his car and are keeping it for him until he decides which way his marriage will go. Amanda, his wife, went to Duke last week and spoke with a specialist there and is to go back on the 22nd of April to the hospital for more tests. She had 11 vials of blood drawn for tests to be worked on till then. He says that something is making her body attack anything that comes her way; good or bad. Time will tell. I have just been terribly upset over the disasterous marriage, starting at the honeymoon and on. My feelings for her at first was sorry, but as I saw him withdraw, I got hurt and angry at her; always going to her mother and being babied. We had to wash his clothes and ours in a special detergent, had to eat special foods, so it was hard to go out to eat. I think she might have come to our house maybe twice (I even got a fake tree for Christmas, and had the house spotless of dust and covered the couch so she could sit on it. You have no idea what it has been like. An now that you opened my floodgates, the whole blog knows some of it. AND now it is time for me to put the past past and live .

Sometimes, I just lose Hidey, can't find him for a few seconds. That flips me out when that happens!!

carolinabeachmom said...

Good Eagle Morning DAVE. You sound like me. I have gone from one sickness to the other all winger. I have the kids at school tho. Hope you are up and feeling better soon.

carolinabeachmom said...

JO, you are so lucky. You seem to have the most family company of any of us. How wonderful.

Mits said...

that is too bad, Candy:(

Eagle-Eyed's Sissy said...

Candy, I know sometimes it is just so hard to back up and let life happen to someone we love! I always think I need to jump in there and "fix" things! Which I do not and cannot do!!

carolinabeachmom said...

SISSY You are right,he is stepping up and taking care of it himself and I have to leave it to God to look after him.

Mits said...

and God is a good choice to let Him handle things. Wish we could fix everything, but we can't

Mema Jo said...

Believe me Candy I count my blessings each and every day! I know your heart was breaking but know you support Josh and we will all pray for better times to come your way! We certainly are here for you. Maybe a nest visit in June before fledgling is what I am thinking..

carolinabeachmom said...

SISSY is your avatar of our little Luney? I see where the Atlanta Zoo has live cam on again. Turned it on a couple of times in the classroom, but the kids this year aren't too interested. It is a wierd class.

Mits said...

looks like a tree in the BWO nest.....lol

Costume Lady said...

Well, my dear Candy, I am so sorry that things haven't worked out well for Josh and Amanda, but the choice to go into the military, at this time, is a good one. No matter what you hear on the news, the military takes very good care of their men and their families.
Capt. Gene was in Fort Jackson, also, for some time.
Prayers for Amanda that her illness will be determined and cured. That is probably what is making for a rocky marriage.
CANDY, you can vent anytime you want to...that is why we are here, for each other:)

Mema Jo said...

RTH just raised up and yep! 3 eggs

Costume Lady said...

Jo, Gene says there are two Cracker Barrels in Frederick. Were you speaking of the one near the FSK Mall?

carolinabeachmom said...

Thanks so much to all of you for letting me just hop right back in here. As I said before, each and every one of you have become very special people to me. You are all the best; the most caring people of anyone I have ever known,. I am just so sorry that I pulled away.

AND NOW, I am going to have to get busy like LOLLY and get liking myself better and start losing all the weight that I have managed to put back on. :( Not healthy.

Mema Jo said...

Sure is a Tree! Wish I had been able to see that one fly in!

carolinabeachmom said...

Oh WANDA, I just love Cracker Barrel. Josh and I would go there on the morning that I would head back to the beach. I wish we would get one down here along with an Olive Garden. :)

Eagle-Eyed's Sissy said...

But that is so hard to do. I know with Andrew (he lives with me), I am having a time because he is in this relationship and I think the girl is a good girl, just worries me. He is only 19 and I think he needs to "play the field". Then I remember, I was 18 when I got married to Tom and it is turning out okay, I think.

Mema Jo said...

I only know of 1 Cracker Barrel Wanda
The one on RT 85 near FSK Mall

Mits said...

that is the only Cracker Barrel I know of there...unless there is a new one.

Eagle-Eyed's Sissy said...

That is Luney, Candy! I love that bear!

Mits said...

Lolly said...

Candy, I felt something was going on. You and family will be in my prayers, specially for Josh in his new direction.

Retirement will be good for you. Kindergarten is wonderful but you have to give so much. I really have my life back. I was ready to let the younger teachers have it.

I am up to 28 pounds weight loss and if it encourages other....yea! It just takes determination, support, and will power! LOL Go for it!!!!

Mits said...

she almost landed right on top of her

Mema Jo said...

It is so easy to have hindsight in guiding others but when you really think it out as to what we did at a certain age - Hard To Believe isn't it!!! lol

Mits said...

yep Frederick only has 1 Cracker Barrel according to their list

Mema Jo said...

I think that Hidey does NOT appreciate mom digging in the egg well while she is in it!

Lolly said...

Okay, I signed off face book for the day, now I have to say here that I have to get busy. Have not even had breakfast.....but that is okay. I've got to get my cam time in! It is a necessity. LOL

Have a great day everyone!

Morning...er, now afternoon, friends. Everyone sounds chipper. Still windy and chilly here, with mostly cloudy skies.
Had to take a muscle relaxant at 5 this am for bad cramp in my leg, and now can't stay awake!
Candy, dear girl, so glad to see you back! I'm sure we'll have a nest visit in June, if Hidey hasn't fledged by then, so school should be out and you could come!!
Paula, Nicholas was in power until he was assasinated in 1918. He was the last czar.

northof49 said...

hello from canada, nice sunny day here, just above freezing, snow is starting to melt,,, hidey is hard to see, she blends in with the grass if she doesn't move,,,

carolinabeachmom said...

Good luck at the dentist JO.

Costume Lady said...

Ok, Jo, that is the one that Gene is familiar with. His RV EXIT guide shows two. Can't always go by that book. It has gotten us to go in circles some times, but MOST of the time, it is a good thing to have.

carolinabeachmom said...

I think the parents have got the egg cup dug so deep, it is hard for Hidey to get out of there yet. Do you all suppose it will be their future launch pad? :)

Candy, glad you are starting to feel better about Josh being in the Army. I can understand how worried you have been about his decision and I pray that everything works out for the best.

hedgie said...

Yes, Wanda, Candy's son went into the army last month, I think it was.

Costume Lady said...

NORTHOF49, Hidey doesn't move very much, because he/she is too full of fish to move much:) Yes, Mother Nature does provide these eagles with a wonderful camoflage,

carolinabeachmom said...

Good morning northof49 in Canada. Sometimes Hidey looks like just another branch in the nest. You are right. Please keep the snow, melting or not, up your way. WE have dogwoods and other fruit trees and bushed blossoming down here and it is spring!

deb said...

North, I hope you get rid of the snow soon! I bet you can't wait to see green grass again.

carolinabeachmom said...

Hey there DEB. I hope you have finally seen the last of your snow there. Thanks for the kind words. It is good to be back amongst friends again.

hedgie said...

Lots of commentsw thrown in there! So you already knew about Josh, Wanda....sorry. Candy, I had pretty much suspected the scenario as you described it. I think Wanda is right...the military probably is the smartest decision he could have made with the current economic conditions...steady pay AND benefits. Do try to emncourage the OCS, tho'...that would be best for a career man! You can always come to us, you know. We HAVE missed you!
Hey North....blogger cop got you like it often gets me...posting a post twice!!!

deb said...

Yes, Candy, all my snow is gone. I think if the weather holds, we may see some blossoms and leaves this week!

Eagle-Eyed's Sissy said...

We are getting blooms and leaves too but I still doubt that we are through with bad weather. This winter is hanging on for dear life!

carolinabeachmom said...

Thanks Hedgie for the kind words. AND I do hope he goes into OCS. First he has been told he will be in the Chemical corp for Hazmat (?) training in MIssouri, which he wanted to do, and also flight school in Georgia where he wants to parachute out of an airplane. I told him that was great! When I get to be 90 years old, we can jump tandem and make the news!! :) I think he just wanted to get a look at the lower end and work there for awhile before OCS At least I am hoping that he does OCS. Time will tell. If he is smart he will, but only he can decide.

carolinabeachmom said...

DEB Glad to hear that your snow is all gone. I do love spring the best as it is the rebirth of everything starting with the resurrection of our Lord. Everything comes to life, is green and brings beauty with it.

Oh MEGAN One of the kids in my class this year has a mother who farms flowers like you do. She brought us in some tulip bulbs to plant with the dirt, but they got bugs on them. Then she brought us in plants that she had dug out of her field and they had the buds dry up. Soooo finally she just brought in l red cut tulip for each child to take home. The children were delighted,

HEDGIE, lYNN, beautiful avatar. Loved it. I have seen this one a few times, but never have been up in it. Ocracoke is a cute little white one. My mother painted it in oils once. I'll get there one day, but now the summer traffic is starting to pick up again with Easter week. Sooooooo now one hibernates to stay safe. :)

That was quite a big deal when they moved it away from the ocean, as the land around it was being eaten away. Quite a project.

You can see ZZ in a fresh enclosure with a lot of climbing structure.

I watched a lot of the move, Candy...they had it on the web live stream, and I was at work so was able to keep it up on computer. The move certainly was a big challenge, but it all went beautifully...no glitches to speak of...and move waws finished ahead of schedule! It was fantaqstic...have been there once since the move, but didn't go up that time...but had climbed it many times in the past! Yep, Ocracoke is white and kind of squatty.

Candy & Hedgie - the move was done by the same crew that moved our summer home from Bethany Beach down the highway to
Fenwick Is. Small world when we knew they were going to move the lighthouse!

Just saw the 3 eggs of the RTH
One to the left looked like it might be starting - you know how hard it is to tell a crack from a piece of grass in the nest.

Candy...Lynn, the Ocracoke Lighthouse is the only one that Gene and I have ever been in. It was sooo windy the day that we went up in it, that we didn't stay very long. I am a lover of lighthouses and don't have room for the replicas, so I have started a collection of them for GeeGee. She loves them. I put them in her new laundry room with the beach scene paper border. Collecting her books about the sea and beaches and shells, also. Her room is only about 6' X 8'. I guess I need to quit soon:(

Now I'm thinking it's Belle after all. This is an angle I'm more used to (in my 4 days of watching so far).

When you check someone's profile and it says this:
It doesn't look like you have been invited to read this blog. If you think this is a mistake, you might want to contact the blog author and request an invitation.

WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?

Lots of sticks at BWO.

I have cauliflower ear today....

Wanda - It means that some people have private blogs, that only invited friends can read them.

Hedgie - I was talking about when my gfather immigrated to the US...I think when he landed he had to sign a document saying he had no loyalty to the Russian Czar, Nicholas. I have been looking for that document at my Mom's house.

Oh,well, that's too bad. It's nice to know who are new friends are and where they are from. I guess they will tell us when they are more comfortable with us:)

If you're talking about me, Costume Lady, that's not my blog mentioned in my profile; it's one I follow. I'm not hiding me from you.

I'm Lisa. In Ann Arbor. Hello.

Paula, this ancestery search I have been working on is sooo frustrating. I have documentation of the ship my Grandfather came over in and even how much money he had with him. His occupation and where he was going to live, But, I can't find any way to get to his hometown in Italy. I know the name of it, but don't know ANY of his family member names. VERY FRUSTRATING!
