Nilla, I think most of us are having daily problems with the Live Feed. Something just isn't right about that system. Someone is paying for that service and is not getting their money's worth!

ceil said...

Morning Sharon. Nilla that is the message I get when the live feed is down. Have a great day everyone. Still trying to get to work. Think I don't want to go?

No live feed for me either, Wanda, but am really grateful I can get the still cam. That comes and goes for me more than the live feed.

UPDATE FROM SCOTLAND NEST
The webcam below is showing live footage from SWT's
Loch of the Lowes Wildlife Reserve, Dunkeld

OSPREY DIARY: read the latest news from the nest!

12 May 2008
It’s been a relatively quiet weekend; our ospreys are probably more used to this warm spell by now.

There was a bit of drama on 8 May as a rather persistent intruder (presumably male) kept circling the nest while the female sat in the nest making a racket and looking understandably anxious. The male eventually swooped in and saw the intruder off. But the drama didn’t stop there… it was late afternoon when the male flew back into the nest with a large branch before cracking his beloved mate over the head (Laurel and Hardy style). It got worse as he proceeded to drop it onto the eggs! Thankfully they were fine, although the chicks may have something to say about it when they arrive!

The next day was relatively quiet with more or less the usual routine, although the male did manage to stand on the female while giving the nest a spruce up! That said he has been more attentive recently, bringing in more fish for her so he should be given his due, despite appearing as daft as a brush sometimes.

There have been a couple of other ospreys intruding into our ospreys’ territory but the male seems capable of seeing them off time and again.

This morning the male left the nest for around 8 minutes, leaving the eggs unguarded before the female eventually took over. By now the chicks inside should be generating their own heat and so it’s not quite so important for the pair to be incubating all the time. The only problem at the moment would be predation of the eggs but our ospreys are such great parents that I’m sure they wouldn’t let such a thing happen.

Suzanne said...

Thanks for the update, Helen. Love to read their diaries! Egg turning in Scotland, and they're zooming in, but can't see too clearly. Angus covering the eggs with moss.

NillaWafer said...

Thanks Suz i got it up... lol birds chirpin all over.. Shouldnt it be night time over there in Scotland now?

Suzanne said...

Where is Norma? Yesterday I'm thinking she was working for the election, but she is really sleeping in today! Yo Norma, time to rise and shine.

Suzanne said...

Nilla, think it's almost 4 in the afternoon. They're 5 hours ahead of us. I think.

NillaWafer said...

Carol_in_WV said...

Hi, Wanda. I just read your message on the previous thread, so I probably missed Gene. Gotta get back to work now.

Suzanne said...

Hi Carol.
Doing nestorations in Scotland. Still raining in Finland. NBG chick eating again, little porker! PA falcon kids are all asleep, they're adorable. Oh, can see 2 little heads in the stork nest. Feeding time. Can almost make out the eggs on the TX wood duck nest. SC bluebirds are getting fed. And I guess we don't have a hatching yet in Scotland. Male came in did nestorations, and left. Isla never got up.
Now it's time for me to hit the road. All have a great eagle/panda day. Eyes to the sky, see the raptors fly!
Oh, lunch time for our PA falcons. Those little babies can jump up for bites now. They're so cute. She sure is feeding them fast, but guess if ya had 4 kids just all grabbing for bites, you learn to feed them quickly.

Suzanne said...

Wow, PA mom tears off a bite and just kind of holds it in the general direction of one of the chicks, and the chick jumps up and grabs it. They sure are growing!
Ok, outta here for real.

From a news report I just read.... By AUDRA ANG, Associated Press Writer
20 minutes ago on Yahoo news "Rescuers reach epicenter of China earthquake"

"Twelve Americans were found safe near the epicenter of the quake.

A spokeswoman for the World Wildlife Fund said the 12 members of the wildlife group were reached by satellite phone earlier in the day. The team was near the world's most famous panda preserve in Wolong, whose pandas were reported safe Tuesday."

That is wonderful news...Hope we hear more soon.
Hugs to all, it's good to be back,

NatureNut said...

Hi All, Just checked with Patuxent Park re: osprey cam nest....Greg, one of our naturalists, went out in boat and there were NO chicks in the nest and the female still hasn't been spotted. He took a chick from another nest and placed it with our male at the cam nest. The male has been interested, but hasn't yet sat on the chick to protect it. If this doesn't occur, Greg will return chick to original nest.
Stay tuned...:>(

paula eagleholic said...

What does Greg think happened to the female?

NatureNut said...

Haven't heard any speculation on the female. She was down low on the chicks Saturday & not there Monday afternoon.Since she was a new mate & possibly young, like BW, perhaps the weather got the best of her. However, I think if she were still alive, she would have returned to the nest by now.

What is it?

Deb, I am going to say it is a sharp-shinned hawk but really not sure. Definitely a hawk though, I feel pretty sure.

The reserves that Lu Zhi’s team has checked in on have no staff casualties, but infrastructure has been damage. The Wolong reserve staff are all safe, including the ones doing the field monitoring. All 86 pandas in the breeding centers are also safe. Tourists, including 12 US World Wildlife Federation associates are also safe. The villages in Wolong have been wiped out, however.

just a short update from the panda curator at the zoo, this is from a Chinese colleague of hers

Busy day at the zoo, tons of people. Funny, no one really asked about the earthquakes in relation to the pandas...

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

You know, it is unreal at the difference in the clarity of the still cam and the live feed! Like night and day!

MITS said...

ain't that the truth...you should put the NBG cam next to the NCTC cam....what a difference

MITS said...

off she goes, I never did see the fish

MITS said...

back again, is that Lib with more food????

MITS said...

yes...more food

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

Yes, more food, but the babies are full up!

deb said...

Thanks, Sharon, I looked up sharp shinned hawk in my SD bird book and the ss hawk and the Northern Harrier are right next to each other and similar in looks. If it is a ss hawk, it is migrating to the north. My book says they can migrate through May and are common to areas with trees. There were lots of trees where I saw it. Well, lots for eastern SD anyway.

FROM ZOO PAGE MAY 14TH A.M.May 14, Morning
We have gotten direct confirmation that the pandas at Wolong, Chengdu, and a preserve in Ya'an are safe. We do not yet know about staff and their families. We have heard that some reserves in Sichuan province were damaged by the earthquake, which caused some of the reserves' observation decks to collapse. Damage to roads has seriously restricted access to the reserves.

FROM ZOO PAGE MAY 14TH AFTERNOON UPDATE

May 14, Afternoon
We recently got word that the staff at Wolong, including those doing field monitoring as well as tourists visiting the reserve, are all safe. HOW DO I GET UP ON THAT LEDGE WITH MOM? lol

NatureNut said...

Deb, Been challenged over your hawk.
Body size would help you a lot for ID purposes.
Sharpie has body length of only 11"
Cooper hawk looks exactly the same BUT has that FLAT head...is about 16" body length.
Harrier has those disc-shaped eyes and is large..18". Wings look really long when flying.
Good luck...I'm going to send it to my bird buddy. :>)

movin said...

Hi, Deb,

I took a look at your mystery hawk, and I think you can rule out both the Harrier and the Sharp Shinned Hawk, because your bird has a lot of brown barring, and feathers partially cover the legs.

It looks like either a Cooper's Hawk or a Northern Goshawk to me, but it would have to be a young bird in either species. It isn't colored like the adults of either species.

Do you have an idea of the size of the mystery hawk? Or the shape of the wings?

I think there are some on-line sites, which are helpful in identifying birds. In fact, I think I had some in my 'favorites' before the crash last month.

Hi Jim, I thought maybe northern goshawk, too, but the pale coloring threw me.

NatureNut said...

BTW, Jim, Have you seen your nesting hummingbirds lately? Did you get any pictures?
Are they ruby-throateds or another
breed? I know you get many other varieties in the West.My daughter in TX has seen violet ear and berylline as well as ruby-throat.
Thx, I love them :>)

movin said...

Hi, Nature,
Haven't looked on-line much yet, although I took a peek at both types in Wikipedia.

They both have young that look something like that. They are different sized birds, and their wings have different shapes in flight...can't tell either size or wing shape from Deb's photo.

C(°ï®¡°)D

Jim

movin said...

Nature,
Just yesterday I tried to get a look through my binoculars. It was really too close to focus well, but the nest is partly coming apart and hanging down.

I'm not sure if the young made it or not. The Allen's nest in Irvine is always partially destroyed by the activities of the chicks practicing their flying while gripping onto the sides. Could be the same thing here.

We don't get Ruby Throated Hummers out here, but the Black Chins I have are the closest related to the Ruby Throats of all Hummers.

There are several varieties around So Cal, but almost all I get in Santa Ana are Black Chins...saw one or two Anna's and an occasional migrating Rufous Hummer at an earlier apartment I had.

When I lived in San Diego County, we had mostly Anna's Hummingbirds with an occasional Costas sighted.

The Costas is the most beautifully colored of any I've seen. If you see the male in bright sunlight, it looks like a beautiful, iridescent rainbow, which always changes as it moves and turns.

deb said...

Wow, I have been relaxing and have missed all the discussion on the bird. The coloring threw me, too, it was so white. Helen sent me a bird figure-outer program that is really fun. It says red-tailed hawk, even when I put white, black and grey as colors. They are the most common hawk around here. I have other pictures, but they are all showing the back. It was rather large, but was far away so size and wings are a little hard to tell. I am going to do the bird thing again.

deb said...

Red tailed hawk again, this time I use white, tan and brown for coloring. I had picked Northern Harrier because it said it had a white rump patch.

Thanks for that site, Helen, I will save it.

deb said...

A northern goshawk is not common to my area of the country, it would be unusual to see one here, occasional sightings in Western SD, hardly ever eastern SD.

movin said...

Hi, Deb.
It so happens that the Red-Tailed Hawk is probably the most common hawk in So Cal also. It has many color "phases" across the country, and it could be a R-T. From what I've seen here though, I probably wouldn't guess it was a R-T.

It's a beautiful hawk, whatever kind it is.

Good morning, world. Another nice night out. Guess this will be the last one for a few days, darn. 60° at home, 61° here. Guess rain is gonna start either this afternoon late, or this evening. I still have fields at home that look like ponds! Ground can't take much more saturation.
See spidey's been busy again, darn thing! Can see the kids through the web, but it's hard. Wish he'd eat whatever that is in his pantry waiting to be devoured! Kids are all around the nest sleeping. The BW kids are also sleeping. Jackdaw on her babies, and both ospreys in Finland on their nests. Can't tell which is on eggs in Scotland, and they haven't moved yet, so don't know if we have a hatching. They haven't updated the diary, so maybe not yet.
All have a great eagle/panda day. Eyes to the sky, see the raptors fly!

Good morning, Suzanne...

I crashed earlier, and so now I'm up in the middle of the night, taking meds, waiting for sleep to strike again.

Sure can't see anything much through Spidey's 'tangled traps.'

Well, it's Angus on the eggs, and he just got up to turn them. No babies yet.

I do believe Intrepid just took off. He was doing wing flaps and boom, just one eaglet in the nest! And we have an osprey in the BWO nest. And it almost looks like our kids are doing wing flaps through spidey's web, but too hard to see. Have to wait till daylight.

LOL, good morning, Jim. Yes, he's quite the builder, isn't he? Wish we could take a very long handled broom to his web!
Hope you can get back to sleep, Jim. It's frustrating not being able to sleep.

Well that was cool! Just had a tour of the Loch in Scotland. Angus has been calling for Isla, but she hasn't shown up yet, so the cam operator went looking for her. Didn't see her, but checked out the lily pads in the water, and then watched a woodpecker eat a bit and flick from tree to tree for a while. then he got lost, so back to the water, then back to Angus, who is still calling. Oh, here she comes flying in. Love this cam guy, oh, she went fishing on her waay in, how cool is that! So let's see what she brings... well, darn, where did she go? Found the woodpecker again in the trees, but lost Isla. Looks like a downy or what's the other one that looks like downy's? But it's huge. Oh, off the eggs now, zooming in. Nothing but eggs and flies on the eggs. Don't see any cracks yet, darn. Thought I saw a crack on one yesterday, but they've been turned and nothing visible now but egg shell. Oh, here comes curled talon to turn them and get back on them. He sure has big feet! Well that was exciting.
PA kids are awake and grooming.Or not. Going back to sleep AND grooming. Angus egg turning again before he sits back.

I've seen the loon mate come visit the nest, but whichever one is on it didn't want to move, so mate swam off. He's back now, and parent on nest is just watching him. Or her. They look exactly alike, so I don't know who is who.

GOOD MORNING SUZ...
What did Isla do with her fish? Maybe she has Alzheimers and forgets what she is doing.

I love that Loon cam. Hope we have two babies this year. Really enjoyed watching LuLu.
The Loon cam in Maine isn't very active. According to their blog, an intruder disrupted their efforts to get started on their family.
