Thanks for the new thread, Steve, and the heads up, Deb. Where is everybody?
Helen, I am so VERY glad you can get Finney's nest!!!! Congrats!
NBG eaglet is eating again. Seems to be a family affair, that's so nice. One starts feeding baby, other parent joins the nest and feeds the baby too. They are adorable, and I'm so glad they have a chick after all their problems!

Suzanne said...

Deb, guess everybody is gone. Megan is outside in this beautiful weather, Helen has zoo, and Norma has study group. Hate to leave you, but need to get on other PC. Later.

Lolly said...

Good morning Suzanne and Deb! Been reading and catching up, opening cams, etc!

Looks like we are in for another day of storms. Forecast of rain, hail, tornadoes, you know, the fun stuff!!! YUK!

MITS said...

it is 80° here already, time to pull out the short sleeve zoo shirt and shorts.....

Lolly said...

Morning Mits! What do you do at the zoo?

deb said...

Good morning, Suzanne, Helen and Lolly.

MITS said...

Lolly, I'm an Asian Trail interpreter, at the National zoo in DC, talk about the Giant pandas, red pandas, sloth bears, clouded leophards, small clawed otters, fishing cats, and giant salamander....we have a ton of cams, just goggle Smithsonian Nation zoo and click on pics at bottom...got to go get ready.

Lolly said...

Is anyone watching the sea eagle cam in Finland? I had not heard mention of it.

Lolly said...

Thanks Mits! I know about all the cams, they are great! Bet you are great at what you do as well.

deb said...

I watch it, Lolly.

Lolly said...

Momma Falcon is still trying to gather her chicks under her, but they are getting too BIG!

Suzanne said...

Both ospreys in 2nd Finland nest, and one that was on egg is turning egg.

Suzanne said...

Morning, Lolly. The sea eagle cam is really an osprey nest, and they have returned and taken the nest back. They have one egg that was laid either last night or this morning.

http://natureit.net/site/saaksikamera.php?cam=seili-wide&refresh=15

That's the URL, all on one line. The 2nd Finland nest we watch we call Finney's nest. That's the name we gave the osprey baby last year, and it's easier to use that when talking about 2 Finland osprey nests.

Suzanne said...

Oh, Finney's nest has 2 eggs. One laid this weekend, other one yesterday. If you need that URL, let me know.

Suzanne said...

Wow, big bird feeding at PA. One chick is sleeping through it.

Lolly said...

Suzanne, I watch both the Finland osprey cams and I have found a third that is a sea eagle. Definity a sea eagle!

OMG!!! I went to the site to get the URL and there are at least two babies in the nest!!!

Newest update from zoo on Mei Xiang

May 5
Mei Xiang has started to shred bamboo in Den Three. This activity is called “nest building” even though it only involves carrying a piece of bamboo to the den, shredding up part of the culm or stalk, and then sitting on it wherever it lands. As far as other behavior possibly related to pregnancy, Mei has left her carrots uneaten on a few occasions. For some reason known only to Mei, when her progesterone levels rise during pregnancy (or pseudopregnancy), carrots lose their appeal. Also, Mei has been choosing to rest indoors more frequently, often settling in for a long nap, when our plan was for her to shift back outside for bamboo.

Tai Shan last weighed in at 181 pounds on April 30. Tai is also into rearranging his bamboo. He will pick it up and carry it around the yard and sometimes even up in the trees. Perhaps a different hormone, testosterone, is behind his wanderings. We have a small study in progress to analyze hormones in fecal samples to learn about the earliest onset of maturation in our juvenile male panda. Just like the adults, Tai continues to eat up to about 40 pounds of bamboo culm each day. Yellow fibrous droppings are everywhere around the enclosures. Since they digest only 20 to 25 percent of what they eat, all three pandas have the keepers busy with both ends, going and coming!

Tian Tian gets the restless panda award. We continue to rotate yards and give him access to multiple yards to burn off energy. We give him several enrichment activities each day to help keep him occupied. He is an enrichment challenge. Tian still bleats endearingly for his keepers, and relishes our attention. These are cherished moments for the panda and his keepers.

It must be hot in PA, she's really huffing. She fed those kids in a hurry. Look at those mouths still wide open. Wow, hope she cools off soon.

Lolly said...

Suzanne, I hope you can get to that cam. Sea eagle is feeding babies!!! Too cute!

Gotta go. Jack is here wanting the computer. BBL

Suzanne said...

Oh, Helen, thanks for the update. I was going to ask you if there was any sign that Mei is preggers, but I forgot. Did think about it this morning, but lost that thought somewhere on the way down here! (Good grief, hope that's all I lost!)
Thanks for the link, Lolly, but I can't connect at the moment. Keeps timing out.

Suzanne said...

Suzanne said...

San Jose falcons getting fed. Look at those full crops!

Suzanne said...

Have fun, Helen! Give our love to Tai!

Suzanne said...

Look at those San Jose kids, they're gonna pop! And still wanting to eat. Mom took food and left so she could get a bite. Yup, she's down the walkway eating now. Nope, leftovers for later for the kids. Off she went.

deb said...

The hummer is sitting on an egg. She moved to a different nest again and Joe will set up the cam this weekend.

paula eagleholic said...

Morning, all

Adult our nest...looks like some fish there too

Suzanne said...

Lisa has updated the BWE webpage with news about Destiny and Intrepid, but lost pic. Has lines through it.

Suzanne said...

Hi Deb and Paula. Both parents have been in and out of our nest all morning. They have stayed and visited with the kids for quite a while.
PA falcon must really be hot, she's still panting, and trying very hard to shade the kids with her wings.

deb said...

I have been trying to see if the fifth egg hatched at PA, but she is covering the nest too well to see.

Lolly said...

The PA 5th egg was still there a short time ago.

deb said...

Thanks, Lolly, I see it now, too.

Lolly said...

http://www.smp.no/templates/scripts/orneredet_live.php

Deb, have you been to this cam of sea eagles in Finland? I saw two eaglets being fed this morning. I got so excited!

Suzanne said...

That 5th egg may not hatch. She laid 5 last year, but only 4 hatched then too. She hasn't been on it hardly at all this morning, and when cam first got light, she had pushed the egg off to the side. She later brought it back and put it under her. Sure glad to see she's not panting like she was!

paula eagleholic said...

I checked that one the other day, but didn't look for too long, Lolly. Glad to hear they have some babies!

deb said...

Yes, Lolly, I watch that one. There are a couple of clips on my page of the nest when I first saw the chicks.

SJ falcon is off eating, oops, she is done for now.

deb said...

Suzanne, they are clips you can watch.

Suzanne said...

Awww, did you guys see how quietly mom walked over the chicks and to the side of the nest? She waited till they were all asleep, how cute. Guess she needs a break to stretch her legs. They are sacked out, too. Cute little white fuzzies!

Suzanne said...

Oh, thanks, Deb. I'll check them tomorrow. Have been busy, and haven't checked your clips in quite a while. Seems like the dam burst and it hasn't evn slowed down for a couple weeks.
Time for me to hit the road. All have a great eagle/panda day. Eyes to the sky, see the raptors fly! Look at those PA babies, they are so cute!

melvsmom said...

Have you noticed how long little bit has been standing on that fish? Dad was there at first when he walked over, but didn't offer to feed. Then Dad departed and little bit (I think Tiny) starting standing on the fish but apparently hasn't mastered ripping off bites. So he's still standing on the fish and probably hoping someone will come soon to help.

How are you doing today??

Good Afternoon Eagle Buddies!
I have had a very calm morning today.
Weather is beautiful!
Lolly - hope the storms blew over your area! I know that you want out in your yard!
Hi Jim - I had a bit of trouble with the blog myself. Deb said a hummer is back on an egg & that Joe will set up the cam shortly.
Adult is in the nest now....Mantling going on with 2 of the eaglets...I guess the food went back with the adult at the 12 noon position and all heads are turned in that direction........

Lolly said...

Hi Jo! (Started to say "g-morning", but my how the time flies!)

We haven't had rain yet, but we are on alert! Have been out in the yard working. Have a eye appointment this afternoon, can not work too long.

Have to tell ya'll what we did yesterday. Went to a Blood Donor Banuet at Texas Motor Speedway. Mind you, we are not NASCAR fans. We got a tour. Went around the track 2 laps at 90 mph! Wheeee!!!! It was fun! Of course we were in a 12 passenger van, not a race car. LOL

Dinner was on the 9th floor of the Speedway Club. It over looked the track. NICE! We had a very enjoyable evening!

melvsmom said...

Lolly, I envy you. I am a NASCAR fan (and a blood donor) but have never had the opportunity to ride the track. And since I am VERY claustrophobic, actual races are out of the question. So I'll just live vicariously through TV races and reports from lucky people like you.

Mema Jo said...

Hi Lolly - Sounds like a fun evening for you and Jack! At least it was something totally different to do.
Ed is a donor - gets a freeby T-shirt each time. Of course he isn't a T-shirt guy so I get it in my size!

Mema Jo said...

Hi melvsmom! I wouldn't mind the van ride around the track at 90mph! I think I could handle that!

Our snowbird Iris is back from Fl at her PA home. So is my brother-in-law & his wife. We always say we are going to visit - but our winters just aren't so bad here in MD anymore as far as getting away from the cold weather.

Mema Jo said...

Our nest is full of panda nappers! lol

movin said...

Speaking of "Panda naps" Gao Gao is snoozing in a simulated tree stump.

movin said...

Steffi has filed this weeks Catalina Report...some good pictures.

Lolly said...

The ride around the track was really fun and, of course, there were jokes being cracked and lots of laughter. FUN!

Jack lives in his donor t-shirts. Doesn't wear them out, but works in his shop and yard in them, and sleeps in them. LOL

When you get to the 10 gallon donor you get to go to banquets and receive nice little gifts. Jack is at 17 gallons.

movin said...

You should see the video of ZZ in the snow if you haven't already. She's a riot.

[:~)]

Jim

melvsmom said...

Lolly, give Jack my best. I have been a donor since I was 18 years old. My best friend at the time (a little older than me) was the Red Cross director for our county. Everytime there was a drive, she'd drag me out to donate. It became a life long habit and I am proud both of my contributions and the contributions of those willing to share "the gift of life." 17 gallons is truly an accomplishment.

Mema Jo, I love the snow birds. They remind me why I live in FL. I just can't take the cold. Inherited arthritis from my mom and grandma before the age of 30. Naturally it has worsened in the last 20 or so years. I don't even like to fly north to go south in the winter. But I do love visiting the NW in the summer months.

movin said...

Talk to you all later. :~D

Gotta take care of business.

[:~)]

Jim

Mema Jo said...

Congrats to Jack! Ed also just sorta schedules it on the calendar when he is Good to Go. When he was a state employee he started going & has continued ever since - even after retirement! Good habit to get into!
I can't donate after having a hepatitis infection as a very young person. Wish I could since I am O-Neg!

Lolly said...

Jack is O neg. He was working at Locheed (aeronautical engineer), they have their own blood donors office. So, we was able to donate frequently. Being a kindergarten teacher in an elementary school in a small town, 20 miles from the closest blood bank makes it difficult to do it often.

crazy osprey in Conn, has a yellow plastic bag in nest

deb said...

I have had a long day. My dad is in the hospital with pneumonia.(in CA) It is a mild case, but his wife doesn't have a clue. She thinks he will get out of the hospital and start right back catering to her again. We had words, and I am still fuming 5 hours later.

deb said...

When you watch the osprey in Conn. do you get a live picture, or do you have to refresh it?

MITS said...

I get a live pic, Deb....Sorry to hear about your Dad, I have had pneumonia, twice in the last 2 years, and my doc was really concerned...hope you dad gets the care he needs....my mother-in-laws husband was like that poor woman had ovarian cancer and he dragged her all over the country and world traveling.....wanted to smack him.

Costume Lady said...

DEB, prayers for your Dad and you.
Helen, didn't one of our Osprey do the same thing last year with a plastic bag? Can't remember which one. They must have a THING for plastic!

MITS said...

both eagles at LW

MITS said...

ospreys love bright colors an unsual stuff for the nest, Conn had the blue teddy a couple of years ago

Costume Lady said...

Don't know what's going on at the nest with the sound of wind. Three miles up the road, there is no wind at all. Maybe it is headed this way.

Costume Lady said...

Oh, yes, I had forgotten that. Someone sent me a photo last year. LMBO!

deb said...

I could go on and on, but I need to let it go. I can't change them, just put in my 2 cents worth when I can.

deb said...

The osprey in Washington spends a lot of time on the nest, but there isn't an egg there yet.

deb said...

The CO eaglets are sure getting big.

Costume Lady said...

Was at my Mom's most of the day and we watched her Bluebirds building another nest. She also has a pair of Tree Swallows building another nest. (You know, the one with the feathers stuck all around the edges.) Hope they are all successful. It is a wonderful part of nature for an elderly woman to be able to watch.
She looks forward to Spring every Winter just to see her Bluebirds again. I think that thought will keep her going many more years to come.

Costume Lady said...

Pearl (I think) just became air-borne for a few moments. Soooo funny.

MITS said...

I hope she enjoys many more springs, Wanda, you are lucky to still have her

MITS said...

off to fix dinner...BBL

deb said...

I wish we had more bluebirds around here, very rarely see one. I have a lot of finches and sparrows at my feeders, along with blackbirds and doves.

wvgal_dana said...

Hi again my FRIENDS

Deb hope you Dad soon is well and maybe some doctor puts mouthy one in her place. ( :

Also in Conn the Osprey nest Deb. I think maybe what you are thinking about. Is the plastic rings that goes over 6 pack. Last season one of the Osprey chicks there had one around its neck. It would have died if that hadn't gone up and remove the plastic from around its neck.

deb said...

Thanks, everyone for the words of encouragement.

People make me mad, with how they just throw things on the ground, not thinking how it affects wildlife. Poor little chick!

That was a quick in and out at our nest.

deb said...

Time for my dinner, BBL.

wvgal_dana said...

Our eaglets better watch the landing zone in the nest right now is : ANYWHERE

wvgal_dana said...

Another landing by parent again...humm wonder what is up...that makes 3. Staying alittle longer this time.

wvgal_dana said...

Parent left our nest again. Probably out on a limb.

wvgal_dana said...

Glad it was a nice day as far as the weather for you Mits at the zoo.

Costume Lady said...

Hi, Miss Dana. How's the back? Are you going for more shots?

wvgal_dana said...

Hi Wanda I go the 20th. Did you Mom have hers?

Costume Lady said...

Yes, I remember the plastic coke rings. That happens to a lot of wildlife. We do have some thoughtless IDIOTS in this world. Wish I could find them and hand out a just punishment.

Costume Lady said...

Dana, Mom is getting a shot directly into her spine this Friday. After that, maybe a chiropractor...

MITS said...

it was beautiful at the zoo today, Dana, all the late spring flowers, like the rhododendron starting to bloom...but I'm exhausted, lots of people, some really great, some not so great....

Costume Lady said...

That last landing scared the Bejeebies out of the eaglets. LOL

Costume Lady said...

Helen, have the M&M sisters been to the Zoo?

MITS said...

no Wanda, they have not, with the kids working during the week, it is hard to get there, and I know my son wants to be with them on the 1st trip, weekends are awful at the zoo....and pretty soon ,my time will be between the ocean and here. and I watch the young ones, most are not happy are interested...

MITS said...

spidey's nest is a pain in the butt.

Costume Lady said...

My goodness, I forgot how young they are. You are right, they will enjoy it more in a few years. I can remember the first time we took our girls to the zoo; I was probably more excited than they were. How wonderful to see their faces the first time they saw all those animals face to face for the first time!

I remember going on a field trip to the National Zoo with a bunch of 3rd graders...old enough to either appreciate or hate it!

MITS said...

Paula, I hate to say most of the kids, are only there because they get a day off from school, and could really care less about seeing the animals or learning about them...I like when the kids come and they have papers to fill out, I really lke helping them find the answers and answer all their questions, to the best of my knowledge

deb said...

Some of my favorite memories from growing up were the zoos. Cheyenne Mountain in CO, the San Diego Zoo, even the little zoo in Sioux Falls. Then there were trips to the farms and the Black Hills to see more animals.

Is that lightening at the cam?

deb said...

I don't hear thunder, but there is something flashing.

Costume Lady said...

No lightning or thunder here yet. We are supposed to get a shower tonight and a few tomorrow and then bunches after that...

deb said...

Whatever it was happened a few times, then I haven't seen it again, until I type this. Maybe it is the web getting too close to the light?? Of course, it quit again.

Good morning, world. Very warm night out tonight! 52° in PA and 61° here already. Didn't have any wind when I walked to the office, but the flags were all flying straight out from Frederick to Leesburg to Falls Church. So it is windy, at least higher than my car. All have a good eagle/panda day. Eyes to the sky, see the raptors fly!

Can you believe that in 2 months they're going to fledge? where has the time flown? our babies aren't babies any more! they're teens
