Went back and read 1-200. I see that we were talking possum again. My dog, Remus, has caught several of them. He shakes them in his mouth, drops them, sniffs them and repeats the whole process several times. Then he gets it in his mouth and wants to bring it in the house. After a battle of wills, he drops it, looks mournfully at it laying there and comes in without it. Half an hour or hour later - I look outside and it's gone!!! So - it was "playing possum". Someone once told me that when they "play possum" - what really happens is that they get so scared they faint. Don't know if that is true, but it's a funny concept. And - yes, they do stink!!

wvgal_dana said...

My dinner would be stringy too if raw. Chicken ( : Crock pot

wvgal_dana said...

Next door neighbor where we use to live. Had a groundhog under his above ground swimming pool. Since they worked and I was home. I told him to buy a trap. He did I put apples (groundhogs love apples)...kept catching a darn possum...first thought it was dead then I remembered. That they act that way...darn sucker was hard to release every time out of the cage. Finally got groundhog and re-located it.

Jill said...

Has anyboyd talked to Janet lately?
I haven't heard from her in a while. Thought about her when I went by the seafood place on Winchester AVE.

Jill said...

Dana we get all kinds of critters, especially in the winter when schools close for snow days. If it is more than a day or two the dumpsters empty out and they start to migrate. Also the first week after school is out for the summer.

I may just have to wait until Lisa makes an announcement .......

wvgal_dana said...

I've been keeping an eye on BWE also Jo.

Mom got off eagle at SR and male is now on egg. She flew off to get food I'm sure.

These guys have to do better at providing their wives with food :(

Just got back from dinner. Looks like we may have some excitment at BW.

Ran into Wanda, with two handsome young men. LOL She was out with Gene, her grandsons Brandon and Dustin, her mother, who looks a lot like Wanda. And I am going to assume the two lovely women at the table were her daughters.

It is starting to rain here now and wind is picking up. Hopefully that will be it for the night.

MITS said...

I don't remember that one, but 4 eggs, unbelievable.....

MITS said...

Jo, I have three pictures of Lake Washington, two of them have both eagles. I will get them up later, I just got home and got caught up on blog. I need to eat, then I will do it. So maybe a baby at BWE??

deb said...

Oops, I forgot--FOUR EGGS! Thanks, Lolly for letting us know. I just checked that cam yesterday to see if it was up yet.

Mema Jo said...

I guess the eggs aren't talking right now! lol

I hope you told Wanda we all thought she & the Capt were long gone down the road by now! They should have a blast but I bet they best get out of town before anymore bad weather comes.

Mits - it's the eagles nest (4 eggs) that is on a pedestal out over the water. I am wondering if they will all hatch.

You would hope that the later it gets the easier these #%%^#& letters would be. I can't do wvgqlt
At least when they are slanted.
We need to talk about these Word Verifications - & when bloggers refer to them as WV - I think they are talking about West Virigin! lol

I worry about the same thing, Paula, maybe they aren't going to nest this year?? At the bottom of the WildWatch Heron page there are lots of short clips of the herons. I watched a few, will watch the rest later. One of them is supposed to be an eagle attacking the herons, but I will have to rewatch it. I didn't see the eagle.

Evening, I looked at our comments but didn't see this info, which I got on the Maine blog:

'There's a nest in Oklahoma with 4 eggs!!!'

It's the same one we were watching last year when they only had a couple of eggs. Here's the link:

www.
suttoncenter.org/eaglecam.html

**************

On the other hand the Norfolk pair don't seem to have laid egg #1 yet.

Jim

Jill said...

Hey Jim, we checked out the OK nest earlier. BWE was restless tonight so we were hoping for a eaglet. Now would be a good time for them to go 24 hours on the camera. Stopping tonight at 10:59.

Jill said...

Jim here is the video clip I was talking about last night. Now I can't hear Santa Ana without thinking of this.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=IZjMgbRUsZM

Haven't had a chance to read your tiny/url email yet.

Jeff Dunham is on tv now on the comedy channel. Suppose he will be on later on the West Coast.

movin said...

Jill, before the split in the blog, you were telling how big and waddling the Possums get around your area.

Two things that can contribute to that besides what you mentioned...

Possums walk with a "pacer stride." They move both legs forward on the same side at the same time like elephants and some others, and that causes them to appear to be waddling.

They only live about 2 years, so the females carry more than a dozen babies at a time, and that can make them look pretty fat also.

I'm told the big, fat ones make the best stew if you like stew....

Hahaha...

but seriously they are very edible, and old time Americans at least ate a lot of them. Don't know if people down South or Down East still eat them or not.

I haven't had Possum, but I'm willing to give it a try if you do the cooking... You could probably get a recipe on-line and cook it in the ole Crock Pot.

[:~)]

Jim

Jill said...

No this was just a really really fat possum The first time I saw him, my mini dachshund had him cornered. I got him away and the possum headed for the front of the house. At the same time one of the police came to the door. With a very stunned look on my face I said to him (while demonstrated with my hands)I have never seen a possum that big. He laughed until he saw it waddle out. After that it was seen multiple times over the next two summers. No babies.

Yes people here still eat them. Although I have never knowingly eaten possum. There is an old moonshiner near the town I grew up in. Only comes to town to buy "supplies". Eats whatever wanders into his yard.

movin said...

That's a very funny video, Jill. There's some truth to it, but Santa Ana has its beautiful and/or renovated areas. It doesn't totally "suck" as the video reports.

There are a few areas comprised of 19th Century and early 20th Century Victorians that are beautifully maintained ... like mansions with large, large grassy yards, etc.

Anyway, it has its downside, but generally you wouldn't say it sucks now days.

Hahaha, I liked that part about the moonshiner's meat market habits.

[:~)]

Jim

Jill said...

I am sure Santa Ana is a beautiful place. I just get a kick out of the pronounciation. I just finished watching the show that was taped in DC. It is hilarious. Achmed, the dead terrorist and Peanut are my favorites but tonight I saw a new one, Melvin the superhero.

Yes in WV, there are still a few folks who literally live off the land. Back in 1985, that guy came off the mountain early. Usually he came down in mid November but that year it was later October. When asked why, he had come early, his answer was "Something bad is going to happen" When asked how he knew he said "The animals told me" Mid November a huge part of the town was wiped out by a flood as well as several other neighboring towns. For several weeks, it was hard getting fresh food into the towns but I bet you he had plenty since all the animals went for higher ground.

movin said...

Well, in addition to Possum and the obvious like rabbit and deer, other edibles are raccoons, squirrels, chucks, rats, members of the weasel family (don't know about the stink on skunk though), beaver, frogs (which legs I have eaten), snakes (including rattlesnake), bears, wolves, probably wild cats.

If you are out there in the wilderness and have the means to get them before they get you, you could probably eat very well.

Learn some Indian or woodsman ways of finding the edible plants in the area, and you would be set.

I used to read a lot of adventure books when I was a teen (non-fiction too), and it was often known that men, who were snowed in, would simmer their leather clothing and their boots to survive...wouldn't want to do that if trapped by snow outdoors though... [:~)]

Jim

movin said...

I forgot there are many kinds of edible birds, including some large ones.

Did you fall asleep last night, Jill? You didn't comment after the blog split.

Darling Mei eating her breakfast, leaning on her log, and Gobbo rooting about in the undergrowth looking for trouble as usual, you got to love the little monkey. no sign of Tian yet, like all dads at the weekend I bet, having a lie-in.

Hi guys

Regarding the lack of eagles at the BWO, keep in mind that most eagle couples are now tending eggs, so their appearances at the BWO nest have decreased since they have less time to hang out.

We hope to see our ospreys returning around mid March. I've heard that several ospreys have already been spotted around the Chesapeake Bay.
