Wednesday

from the NCTC Website today:

Shepherdstown, WV – Since 2006, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s National Conservation Training Center (NCTC) has connected people to nature by streaming live video of a pair of American bald eagles to viewers across the country and abroad via a camera placed near the eagles’ nest.

The NCTC eagle cam serves as an educational tool to showcase eagle biology, including mating behavior, egg laying, incubation, and in a successful year, rearing eagle chicks until they are old enough to leave the nest. Although the NCTC campus is closed to the public (with the exception of the annual open house and occasional special events), the cam records video year round can be accessed online anytime at: www.fws.gov/nctc/cam/livevideo.html.

After many years of viewing the same pair of eagles, this year we have witnessed the process of natural competition within a species. Recently a third eagle, believed to be a female of breeding age, has been sighted near the nest and appears to be asserting control over the nest and surrounding territory. This is typical eagle behavior in a robust, healthy population and likely indicates that the eagle population near NCTC has increased in recent years.

In response to this behavior, many eagle cam viewers have expressed concern. It is important to highlight to our public viewers that the eagles residing on NCTC’s land are exposed to natural environmental pressures, including the presence of other eagles. At times the camera may be difficult to watch. While NCTC provides the opportunity to view live video of wild eagles, our position is not to interfere in any way.

Craig Koppie, regional eagle coordinator and raptor biologist at the Service’s Chesapeake Bay field office, is working closely with NCTC to monitor the situation. Koppe said, “there are times when intervention is not the correct course of action. Breeding birds are very sensitive to human disturbance, and interfering could result in abandonment of the nest.” Koppe also acknowledged that, “as hard as it is to watch an older generation of eagles potentially be displaced by a younger generation, we need to inform the public that the aggressive behavior we’re seeing is natural. The most fit individual will emerge as having control of the nest and surrounding territory, and this individual will go on to contribute to the next generation of eagles, keeping the species and the population strong.”

NCTC is committed to providing factual, science-based updates on current nest activity. To monitor these updates, please visit: www.fws.gov/nctc/cam.

If I were Belle, I would be taking awhile to warm up to a Trespassing Male Eagle...that would prevent my established mate from bringing me food, and who did not bring ME food and help me and my baby and egglet survive.

If this Trespasser is a Male, as it seems to be becoming the present thinking, then this is why I am saying this at this lonely hour of the morning..and if it is a Female, then I am still very sad the way it all turned out

But I know these are human female thoughts and how can I impose them on what Wild Eagles are doing

I'm done,

Hi, Margy!
Omigosh, the stupid Blogger Cop just poofed my big, long comment! Had to sign completely back in here, too. :o[
Sure have had all kinds of trouble with IE and FF today, too.

I finally DID get caught up on reading here, though.

It has taken at least 90 minutes to catch up, and I got home from school pretty late. I'm so tired I can't remember half of what I wanted to say. Think I'll just call it a night and try to redo in the morning.
JUDIE, thanks for the night light! I'm checking to make sure the porch light is on. Prayers have been said for everyone and every creature, for so many situations.
The eye-scanner security and Dana's thumbprint-scanner security are enabled. Sweet dreams, everyone! God bless, and goodnight! I'll talk to you in the morning light. Love all of you! :o]

Good morning Margy... nice thoughts. Thanks for sharing.
Nice to see you on my side of daylight!

The nest is MT, empty, at this time. It's dark, but there is not a white feather on a bald head to be seen at this time.

Lori O. said...

Still NO eagle in the nest. Empty.

Good morning everyone. Very quiet in our empty nest this morning. Hope you all have a great day!!

wvgal_dana said...

Morning Lori, Margy and Sissy.

No one in the palace.

Lori O. said...

Good morning Dana!

Yep, it's been a lonely, eagle-less morning.

wvgal_dana said...

There are still unanwered questions in my head.

Like: if this is a male-when it came into the nest after Paddy O'Joy was gone. Why did Belle fight it? Why not Libert come into the nest and fight it???? On Norfolk we seen the fight in the nest. Never has Lib come into the nest and fight this intruder if it is a male?????

wvgal_dana said...

Oh heck with it I going back to bed.

I'll read comments when I wake again.

Lori O. said...

Sorry Dana - I'm listening but working. I hear ya!

Sleep well and sweet dreams if you're headed back to sleep already.

37° here now, today's nest weather-
Cloudy with rain showers likely with a chance of snow showers this morning...then partly sunny this afternoon. Little or no snow accumulation. Highs in the mid 40s. North winds 10 to 15 mph with gusts up to 25 mph. Chance of precipitation 70 percent.

Hey Megan!

Good morning.

You think this upcoming freeze/maybe snow is going to kill my tulips that are coming up? :(

WV sUSAn said...

Good morning girls. Here we r into another day of nest drama. I checked the nest several times thu the wee hrs and never saw an appearance of anyone. Would love to see who is roosted in the tree or nearby. Can't wait to see who comes in first this morning.

WV sUSAn said...

Thanks for the weather report Megan.

floralgirl said...

This cold weather certainly give you tulips a wicked chill. They can survive it, but if they are budded it can freeze the buds. I will pick as many daffodils in bud as I can here before the coldest temps hit. You can always cover your budded bulbs with a sheet, newspaper or paper bag at night. Do not use plastic.

floralgirl said...

And hello:) to both of you, Lori and Susan.

Lori O. said...

Hi sUSAn!

The nest has been empty since I checked in aroun 4 this morning. Wish I'd looked earlier but was running behind this morning.

Lori O. said...

Hey hey Ms. Megan!

Official SUNRISE TIME is 7:06 this morning, but you can already see the sky changing colors and the nest is lightening some.

Hope this will bring Belle and Lib in at any moment.

Good Morning all...see we have had an empty nest overnight.

Lynn, hope all goes BADLY for the horse starving a-hole in court today. So regarding the wealthy lady and the chicks...you mean they STILL do that???
Oh yeah, the Scarlett O'Hara thing on Carol Burnett.....OMG that was SOOOOO hilarious! You can buy the series on DVD now. OTHER FAV of mine....the Dean Martin Roasts!!

REGARDING THE PAX PARK EAGLES...Paula had asked if Loretta mentioned. TWO eagles are at the nest there!! In her post last night she mentioned that she forgot something she wanted to write and I bet that was what it was! I got an email from her.

I see 'Truder has come and gone just now.

Lynne2 said...

and is back now

Flew out to the right

WV sUSAn said...

T flew right back n. An now off again. MT

WV sUSAn said...

Gotta shower!

Lori O. said...

that was fast -- gone now.

Lynne2 said...

need to take care of some things before I get ready for work.....

Lynne2 said...

I won't give up on Lib either! I said it before...if it's too late for a clutch, then perhaps the "territory" is not as protected by Lib right now from another male. Wish I knew for sure. I just refuse to believe that Lib can't whoop this snotty nose brat outa there if he wants too.....Eagle congregate in non-breeding seasons....Like at Conowingo for example. Our nests breeding season is over for the year much earlier than expected. SO.....is 'Truder really a threat at the moment?

I thought for sure that B would have already shown up to dig and move sticks.

Lori O. said...

Would really like to have that second cam focused on the nest tree now to see if anyone is hanging out above.

Harbinger said...

Good morning, all! Just an empty nest all night and a brief visit from B & T this morning? Well, we shall see...

@Lynne, are you close to Conowingo?

DanaMo said...

Magpie. Thanks for that info. I'm going to check out that race for the birds!

DanaMo said...

That empty nest is so depressing.

Lynne2 said...

No Janet (uh, it is Janet isn't it HarbingerDC? I'm still trying to learn all the new names!), I actually live a near Baltimore, west of. It's about an hour and a half? Maybe an hour....can't remember! My husband and I, and later some of the momsters, went up the winter before this past one to see the eagles!

Harbinger said...

I live in Baltimore at the north of the city almost in Towson.

Harbinger said...

Oh, yes. And it is Janet. :-)

WV sUSAn said...

I don't think B has made an appearance yet this morning

Hey, for you peeps in Baltimore - do you know anybody that is dying to give away tickets to the Preakness? I want to go see Train and strapped for funds. You just never know and it never hurts to ask.

NEW THREAD/POST
COME ON OVER

Red said...

Good morning everyone. Just caught up on the posts. I just want to say I still think the intruder is Female. I'm thinking like Dana WVgal, We've seen Belle attack the intruder a few times and its usually female against female. When she first arrived everyone was describing her as huge, even bigger than Belle. Now everyone is saying a small male. How can it shrink? lol I guess we all have to wait and see how it turns out to know for sure. I'm still undecided.

Ms Bookworm said...

Hi, Gang,
Gosh, it's Good Afternoon! I was so tired last night I couldn't get to sleep right, so didn't sleep much. Slept in today, and have been napping a bit. Better now!

I just had a thought. We should check our pics and videos VERY carefully to compare the dark feathers on Truder's head. What if there are actually TWO intruders--a female, AND a male, of about the same age, and therefore with similar "dirty" markings?! Was having nightmares about that last night--no wonder I didn't sleep well!!! It could be a possibility, though. Heck, at this point NOTHING would surprise me!

Think I'm going to just shut up and watch, and see what plays out. I'm worn out with speculation and my concern for Belle and Lib. Gotta say that we are DEFINITELY rewriting the books about our eagles! Just wish we had a cam that showed the area adjacent to the nest, and that could zoom out farther! I have a feeling that's where most of the action is taking place! Shoot, if I lived near enough to the nest, I think I would be hiding out along the road with really good binocs and a telescope! Ah, well. Time will tell--and I'm rooting for Belle and Lib!
Still have a boatload of homework to stay on task with, so gotta keep busy. (Lord, will I EVER graduate?!) Have to go drop off some work at school so my teacher doesn't think I've been just sitting around eating chocolates and reading "True Story" (anyone remember THAT magazine? I do!)! Don't think it's still being published.
I just about give up on getting caught up on the blog--there's not enough time! Just know that I am praying for all of you, "oldies" and "newbies," and I couldn't care more about each and every one of you! I consider ALL of you to be both friends AND family! We will get through this eagle trauma together. I'll be back later tonight to check in. Hope everyone has a FANTASTIC day! Later, alligators! :o]
