Wednesday

from the NCTC Website today:

Shepherdstown, WV – Since 2006, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s National Conservation Training Center (NCTC) has connected people to nature by streaming live video of a pair of American bald eagles to viewers across the country and abroad via a camera placed near the eagles’ nest.

The NCTC eagle cam serves as an educational tool to showcase eagle biology, including mating behavior, egg laying, incubation, and in a successful year, rearing eagle chicks until they are old enough to leave the nest. Although the NCTC campus is closed to the public (with the exception of the annual open house and occasional special events), the cam records video year round can be accessed online anytime at: www.fws.gov/nctc/cam/livevideo.html.

After many years of viewing the same pair of eagles, this year we have witnessed the process of natural competition within a species. Recently a third eagle, believed to be a female of breeding age, has been sighted near the nest and appears to be asserting control over the nest and surrounding territory. This is typical eagle behavior in a robust, healthy population and likely indicates that the eagle population near NCTC has increased in recent years.

In response to this behavior, many eagle cam viewers have expressed concern. It is important to highlight to our public viewers that the eagles residing on NCTC’s land are exposed to natural environmental pressures, including the presence of other eagles. At times the camera may be difficult to watch. While NCTC provides the opportunity to view live video of wild eagles, our position is not to interfere in any way.

Craig Koppie, regional eagle coordinator and raptor biologist at the Service’s Chesapeake Bay field office, is working closely with NCTC to monitor the situation. Koppe said, “there are times when intervention is not the correct course of action. Breeding birds are very sensitive to human disturbance, and interfering could result in abandonment of the nest.” Koppe also acknowledged that, “as hard as it is to watch an older generation of eagles potentially be displaced by a younger generation, we need to inform the public that the aggressive behavior we’re seeing is natural. The most fit individual will emerge as having control of the nest and surrounding territory, and this individual will go on to contribute to the next generation of eagles, keeping the species and the population strong.”

NCTC is committed to providing factual, science-based updates on current nest activity. To monitor these updates, please visit: www.fws.gov/nctc/cam.

Just read the TJ update Paula.....seems like you were on the right track about the male thing. This all make much more sense to know it's likely a male.

Can you ask TJ about what I was wondering...about how egg laying/nesting season is just about over and there likely won't be a new clutch is this is why Lib is still around, because territory fighting isn't really necessary now?

Thanks...I'm just really curios to have an expert opinion on that. Because I want to believe that is true so that when winter is on our doorstep once more, that Lib will be regaining his throne and his Belle at the Sycamore Palace.

Thank you so much! It is basically where I thought it was. I have been wanting to go and now that I have someone to ride over with me, I am excited. I just want to see them flying around!! I've only ever seen Eagles in the zoo :( and on the cam.

I need to get back to Pammy's message and now I can't find it. A new page came up. I guess that's what you mean by a "split"

I thought they mated for life??? ok maybe stupid question!!

Yup, DanaMo, that was a split.

This drama isn't over yet, don't think by any means that it is.

I'm curious about that too Lynne2

Got it! Whew...thanks Paula

Yesterday they were soaring very high. It's a good thing my boyfriend has a pair that is pretty powerful.

Slowly catching up.
Pammy, try to change the name of your page to NCTC Eagle Cam Fans. FB is a real PIA. I wish I had not taken on the responsibility for the Animal Advocates of West Virginia page.....but I did, so will see it through.

Judie, I think I've seen one of those hen toys Darth has! Cool.
I have a Henrietta Hen. She's an electric egg cooker---hard and soft boils and poaches. I LOVE her. Can cook up to 7 eggs at a time in shell, or 4 poached. She wets on the counter sometimes because of steam, and cord won't reach to set her in the sink. But hard boiled eggs peel SO easily almost every time that I won't give her up!!

I'm so glad we had this time together
Just to share a laugh or sing a song
Seems we just get started and before you know it
Comes the time we have to say

PammySue said...

Lynn, I tried to change the name earlier but I got an error message saying that my request had been rejected by an automated system.
Facebook can be a GIANT PIA.
I am wondering if I have bitten off more than I can chew with the cam page . . . Maybe I shouldn't have done it without recruiting help, but that's me--I get excited about something and just jump in.

I could not find your report from TJ, Paula. Went to email to read it. Very interesting!

paula eagleholic said...

TJ sent me an email tonight...here's his response to our questions.

Hi Paula!

Sorry it took so long for a reply. I talked with a few colleague's at work yesterday about Belle feeding the chick secretion's from her nares gland. One of them did say he has heard of this behavior happening, but we all share a mutual skepticism of there being any nutritional value to the chick.

Just as a thought, we were wondering if this act isn't out of desperation, an instinctual need to feed her chick, whatever it may be. Like I said though, that is just a thought.

I spent several hours last night skimming through the blog from the last several days trying to figure out exactly what is going on here. I then relayed this info back to my colleague's today. Based upon behavior alone, we all believe that this intruding bird is a male. From what I have gathered, this bird has always kept a submissive behavior. From following Belle around, to sitting in the nest tree in a non threatening fashion, it just makes more sense. It seems likely that this bird has already had an altercation with the Liberty and is now trying to court Belle and form a pair bond with her. That fight may have happened the day before the hatch, possibly the morning of the hatch. That would explain his absence the day of the hatch and why sightings of him have been so scarce.

continued on next post

Mema Jo Father Passarelli was going to marry Ed and me. Ed didn't want to wait the time to have his marriage (I can't think of the name Ft. Passarelli called it). Ft. Passarelli just loved Raschida and she him. We went to St. Mary's when we lived in Maryland.

Sure is a small world...we have friends that still go there.

I'm sorry very sorry to hear Ft. Passarelli passed away. He was a wonderful and caring person.

movin said...

Hey, thanks for the videos, Pam. Great stuff.

Doubly great, because .....

You all know how much I hate to be the one who's always right .......

Both videos show that the challenge is over, and was over with Belle's roughing up Trudy last night.

The two eagles in the videos are BELLE and LIBERTY!! He's smaller than Belle by quite a bit; his feet are much smaller; he shows absolutely no brown on his head or on his tail. It is an adult male.

And from the way they are bonding and making soft calls back and forth and working together on the nest so soon absolutely indicates it is our Liberty-Belle pair.

Ergo, the challenge is over. ooRAH! ooRAH!

Kathryn, it has been fairly quiet today. There were a few visits to the nest by Turdy and Belle. However, there was no fighting, they were just there together.

Sorry, that was not very interesting like Readers Digest.☺

Lynne2, just be sure to check who is in bed with you -- which personality, that is.

Oh good grief, again. Now Lynn has a hen that pees on the counter! Well, who wouldn't if you had to cook 7 eggs at the same time. This is just too much. Thungering succotash. Yes, I was a fan of the Carol Burnett program.

Jo, hope you had fun with Alexis. Dinner out?

Have checked and the night light is on for others coming in so will say goodnight. Have to deal with the wannabe adults tomorrow. Fun topic -- what to do with aged prisoners who are no longer a threat to society.

Goodnight to all and to Belle and Liberty.

Scott said...

@Paula thanks so much. That's what a lot of us had been thinking and its good to see a scientific view of this as well.

PammySue said...

Kathryn, I don't have all the info, but I'll tell you what I know.
Belle AND the intruder were in the nest together twice this morning kinda 'hanging out'- that is, with really no confrontation. There are videos of those 2 episodes posted at 5:06 or so this evening if you want to go back and see them.

The nest has been empty just about all day.

I think someone may have been in the nest this evening, but not sure about that.

Also, new THEORY is that the intruder may be male. ???

Kathryn Ashcroft (The Art of Nature) said...

Thanks Lolly, that's exactly what I needed!

If the intruder is in fact a male, then Liberty's backing off and waiting for a female-to-female outcome no longer makes sense. Wouldn't the male be trying to fight off the intruder male? Any ideas?

@Scott and Pammy.....my co-hort on our FB -page found a way to STOP the e-mail notifications! Thank goodness!!!! Now we just get one a week.....and just delete it! But don't ask me how she did it!!!

Lynne, heard Sunday at out meeting that last spring a wealthy lady went to all of the farm stores hereabouts and bought all the little chicks and took them to farms to prevent them from being sold as Easter chicks. Unfortunately, some of them were farmer's peeps.

Mema Jo said...

Good night Judie. Yes we had dinner out before the thunger started.
Chocolate chip pancakes for Alexis!

Dana - After all these years you're telling me something we very much had
in common! ((hugs)) And it is all because of our blog getting new people like DanaMo.

Yes, I really think professionally and biologically T stands for Tom.

movin said...

I was very surprised to read that the intruder had turned up again after the beating Belle gave her last night.

And now that I see Pam's videos, I can see the other bird was not the intruder, but Liberty.

C(°ٿ°)D Jim

I wonder when NCTC's biologist will determine that fact. I still have some
weird questions for someone but I doubt the behavior has been witnessed before of Belle's burial and then
Tom's attempted removal........

Jim, we just do not think that was Lib in the nest with Belle.

Mema Jo, the male eagle in those videos this morning had no brown in the head or the tail.

Bird Girl said...

Hey folks I'm back again. Pain is tolerable, actually pretty mild now. Took the binding off this afternoon, and there isn't even much bruising. All good signs in my book :)

In looking at comparative pictures, yes I think it's a male too.

I read somewhere that eagles actually bond to the nest site, not each other, but I don't know how true that is.

Bev, hope all goes well for you and you heal quickly and get the relief it's supposed to give.

Lynne2, it's very unlikely that there will be a new clutch at this nest this year. Between the stress of the intruder and the lateness in the season, it's really unlikely.

hedgie said...

paula eagleholic said...

Look at the very beginning of the video when the intruder flies in, you can see the dark spot on the head, also at 3:10 mark on the video. On the second video, you can see the dark mark again around 3:10-14 on the video

NatureNut said...

BAAACK-----We got Lots of thunger, lightening & heavy rain! Rain didn 't last too long, but the thunger was weird---rumbling that sounded low in sky, like at mid tree level. I thought it might be the planes at Andrews, but don't think they would all be running engines in the rain!
Today's nature note: At the Largo Park farmhouse office today, got to see one deer family real close to windows. Was Mom and 2 yearlings(? from last spring). Young had real shaggy darker coats on their sides---must be starting to shed winter coat. Heard that a Park Ranger found a deer skull next to trail awhile back at Pax River Park. It had THREE antlers!!Not like unicorn, but one starting below other on one side! I've never found any antler!

Incidentally, on the feeding of the chick from the female's salt control gland, I don't think it was very nutritious either, but it did serve to rehydrate the chick very effectively.

I too just reviewed the 2 morning videos. The sunlight was against us but I do agree with Paula concerning the dark spot & also the fight marks (jagged feathers) on his back. His head is - well it sorta reminds me of a duck with a thin neck.

I accidentally said 'Tom' - he has already been named Truman (lol I have to go back again and check that out)

IrisF said...

Pammy Sue, I went to the FB site and found that I was still listed as a friend. Were you able to do that or it is some kind of FB fluke?

paula eagleholic said...

TJ's response part 2

Also, while researching info on the feeding of the nares gland secretions, I somewhere cam across a video from today, (posted by you I think), showing Belle and the intruder in the nest together. Belle was very aggressive, actually on the back of the intruder, and forced it from the nest. The intruding bird was completely submissive, showing not intent to fight back. While in such close quarters, it also appeared that this bird was actually smalle rthan Belle, Just more reason to believe that this intruding bird is a male.

Mema Jo said...

Signgirl gave our intruder the name
Truman until proven otherwise. lol

PammySue said...

Sorry, Jo!!! False alarm!!!

Just checked the profile of person. I should have done that first. DUH!!

paula eagleholic said...

TJ's response part 3

I would like to apoligize for posting prematurely on Friday that I believed this bird to be a yound adult female. I based that assumption solely on a 30 sec. video clip in which the intruding bird APPEARED to be as large if not larger than Belle. I should have held my opinion until I had more facts on the situation as a whole. I still believe this to be a fourth or fifth year bird, only now I believe it to be male. SORRY!

It will be interesting to see how this all play out over the next few weeks. This is a prime example of natural selection. I know many people on the blog would be horribly upset to see Liberty displace by an intruding male, but it's in Belle's best interest to mate with the strongest male.

The little "intro" on the right side of the Eagle Cam Daily Home Page :

This blog chronicles the activities of the eagle nest located along the Potomac in Shepherdstown, West Virginia. The nest has been active for seven seasons, fledging several juvenile bald eagles. A large, international community has developed as a result of this extraordinary pair of eagles.

and even more,
How Very Precious is that picture that Deb took of Liberty and Belle perched in the mighty Sycamore Palace....and how dear it is that Steve has this on our home page.

Deb, we miss you every day and wish you were here with us now

Good Evening Eagle Pals, Love to you all...

Paula, thanks for working so hard to get TJ's response up.
He also initially thought the intruder was female based on the apparent size.
But he has now admitted that he made a hasty determination. I recently did something similar . . . Just sayin'.

Lolly said...

Oh, Margy... just got tears in my eyes!♥

movin said...

Male Bald Eagles do not challenge female Bald Eagles; female B. E.'s do not challenge male B. E.'s.

Trudy is a female, which is just a couple months short of 5 years old. She is "approximately" the same size as Belle.

The eagle with Belle this morning was a fully adult male, and, judging by his ready familiarity with her and his activities, it was very probably Liberty.

@Eagle-Eyed Sharon :) she loves all of the princesses, but I'd say Belle is her favorite. Fitting with us watching the eagles. You should've seen her eyes get big when I said her name was Belle. LOL...that's when she asked about Adam...

But I agree, I'd rather see Lib get the girl!

Well, dear friends, I am calling it a day. Early morning date at the courthouse. Hoping to see the perp who tried to starve all the horses be made to pay at least $50,000 in restitution for the expenses incurred my Animal Control, the vet, and Days End Farm!!

hedgie said...

Duh....BY animal control!

Oh, Lolly, BTW----new glasses are great!!!!

Goodnight. Prayers for all......but a special one for Delphia, Sissy, and our Lib!

Scott said...

@hedgie She is something else, that's for sure...so a treasure.

Here are photos I took of her today when I was playing with a new camera toy. http://turnmeyer.smugmug.com/Portraits/Dakoda/16317654_wRGYe#1226428870_L8pmS

Does Nilla get on here?? I thought she did, but I just realized I have not seen her.
She put something up on Facebook about the local Momsters meeting at Red Bird in Boonsboro tomorrow at 1 o'clock. I think I'm gonna go. I'm sure everyone is welcome.

he insisted on calling Palmer "Lucky" - just to razz us!

no more to be said, just want to forget about it !!!
I do not have Facebook...saves me some trouble I think

xo Good Night to those heading to Pillow-Land... xo
can't wait to "join you"

Lolly said...

We have watched so many times when Lib and Belle would have a spat over where to place a log. How many times did we see them rearrange the furniture. We gotta have our Lib back!!

magpie said...

this is new to me:

the @ sign before names....
sorry, I am kinda of out of touch on these things

turtledove said...

Where can I find the videos posted by PammySue? Thanks.

magpie said...

oh, duh! just figured it out:

Comment "at" to that person

I hear -barely - spring peepers at the "life feed" as I called it awhile back..
I am on page ONE of this thread !
or was, now I am going back to it...

Looked at this morning's videos again, and I still see no trace of brown feathers on the head or tail. But the black and white cam was still on, and the detail is blurred.

Looking at the male more closely, he does not appear to move like Liberty did, and I think it is another male.

I hope we get a closer look in better light on the color cam tomorrow.

Lolly said...

I am going to read now. Have the cam up and my screen tilked!☺

Good night to those headed down the hall.

I'll be back to say my good nights.

PammySue said...

turtledove, the videos were posted around 5:06 or so this evening.

You will have to hit the blue 'older' button at the top or bottom of the page to go back.

Scott said...

@magpie Sorry, I am used to using it on Twitter...it helps there if you are typing something and have someone's name in the text.

paula eagleholic said...

I'm still rooting for Lib, too!

Robyn said...

me too.. LIB

turtledove said...

Thanks, Pammysue!

paula eagleholic said...

Pammy posted some links to the videos at 5:06 pm today. She didn't take them, but the links are there. Click on the words in blue.

paula eagleholic said...

Good luck tomorrow, Lynn!

Did the eagle at Lowreeda's park return? The one of the pair that is nesting?

PammySue said...

Paula, is it OK to post videos from the WOW forum, or do they 'belong' to them?

paula eagleholic said...

Pammy video sharing is common. I generally like to try and say who took the video.

paula eagleholic said...

If I don't know their name, I'll at least post their forum name.

PammySue said...

Oh, OK. That's a good idea. Give credit where credit is due.
I never thought about people thinking that I took them, but I could see how me posting them could be misleading.

Mema Jo said...

@Scott - I prefer to use this symbol
It is better then bolding the name as I used to do. Thanks.
Is your little one named Dakota. I had been looking through your photos & I hope I am remembering correctly.

@Pam do you have your keyboard airbag
set for auto. lol I may see you tomorrow.

SNOW Well I bet Megan knew about that all along & didn't want to upset us. I have a bouquet of daffodils that are from my daughter.

@signgirl I thought Truman was a good take off on Truder. We'll go with the flow.. Whatever - I guess for now we shouldn't give the intruder a name since he may not be here forever.

paula eagleholic said...

Pam, I haven't seen Nilla here in a long time. Most of us are friends with her on FB

Mema Jo said...

Pam your videos were from Emtybelfrys
Lots of good videos of our NCTC from other forums.

Scott said...

@Mema Jo Yep, that's our little girl. Dakoda Rae...we changed the t to a d to make it a bit different.

Mema Jo said...

The Midnight Hour is here
and I should have been on the pillows an hour ago!! It's been a lovely day without any fighting going on.

PammySue said...

Mema Jo, my airbag is set and I am braced for impact! ROFL

Mema Jo said...

@Scott - you call her Koda, I see.
Being a photographer you are very
gifted to have such a photographic
daughter! I don't think you could get
a bad picture of her even if you tried

Eagle-Eyed Shar said...

Paula, that nesting eagle did return.

I am on page THREE of this thread !

@Scott LOL
I am not a very modern girl aka old lady...old computer, no face book, no twitter...very basic cell phone....

And I am definitely rooting for Liberty !!!

movin said...

A comment I just left on Paula's blog:

Hi, Paula. I come over to your blog looking for the video of yesterdays whipping of the intruder by Belle...

I found the nighttime videos wherein you can clearly see the brown markings on the male's head, so I have to agree it was Lib who was replaced.

Damn! I hate to see either one of that pair gone, they have been the best. I hope Lib can mate somewhere else, or maybe make a comeback like K-01 at the WE nest.

C(°ٿ°)D Jim

magpie said...

and I guess my photography skills are better taking wildflowers....they don't move !!

paula eagleholic said...

Jim, I sent you an email!

Lolly said...

I am now shutting down for the night. Team Liberty!!! I like it!

Night all! (Sharon, I thought you were going to bed long ago!)

Sweet dreams! Prayers for all God's creatures!

movin said...

I'm going to say "good night" too, folks.

Got it finally: New male in the territory, somewhat humbled by Belle.

No chicks raised to fledging this year.

I hope Lib will be able to make again somewhere. He was the best of the pairs I've viewed on-line.
