Thursday Night

OK.  First off, I am on vacation.  I get very little time away, and am in hot water with my family because I have been checking email and blogs related to work and the cam too much today.

From what I see on the blog comments, there's a lot of emotion going on with today's events, for which I do not have the facts.

If there was an intruder, that would not be an unusual event.  There is great competition now for nesting habitat in the region because the bald eagle has been very successful in recent years. This has happened in several places in the mid Atlantic over the past few years.

It would not be right to have any human intervention in matters concerning wild nature such as this.  It may not be pretty, but nature is not always gentle--it can be brutal.

Everyone please calm down.

I understand why folks would be upset, but let's see how things work out.

Also, based on some of the things I have read in the comments,  I reserve the right to delete any comments on my blog that I consider inflammatory.

I mostly lurk - just want to say that as long as there is life, there is hope. So keep thinking good thoughts. Setbacks are often temporary. Challenges can be overcome. Minutes seem like hours, but they're not! This situation may turn out fine, so let's hang in there and hang onto hope.

Hi, silent lurker here. those with sound, have you heard all the commotion somewhere beyond the nest? Certainly sounded like lots of screeching & hollering from some big birds. Fight perhaps?

Hello everyone, it is definitely a beautiful day 70 degrees already slight breeze and sunny.

I have been doing a lot of reading last night and discovered that if a female is trying to intrude upon the nest the male will hang back and not get involved, is it true not sure but it was written in several places, so Lib can be waiting until the female(?) is gone so let us hope it is a female and once Belle chases her off for good Lib will return home with some chow.

better late than never on the St. Anthony answer! ASnd how does a nice Jewish girl like me know about patron saints? Wellllll, in a group I belong to I was complaining about never being able to find things....so my dear Catholic friends told me about St. Anthony. Since then he's been my best pal! Rabbi Benjamin is also a finder of lost items but I definitely prefer Tony (no offence meant on the nickname!)

Robyn, you are correct. Sometimes it's better to just let the girls duke it out, then get involved and possibly get hurt yourself LOL

Hi folks. All of you who are hanging tough are awesome folks. I do hope and pray your vigil brings you that miracle we all are praying for. I have decided I need to close down my computer and walk away from this now. I can't follow anymore at this time.

I am glad so many of you will gather together this evening. Please whisper up a prayer for this eagle family and all those dealing with the nest activities as each deals in their own way.

Dear Lib and Belle, wee one and egglet and all who watch a close up view of your lives as a Bald Eagle.

May The Lord bless you and keep you.

May the Lord make his face to shine upon you, and be gracious to you.

May the Lord lift up his countenance upon you, and give you peace.

This is the update posted so far....just a repeat

The first of two eggs in the nest hatched yesterday, March 17th, in the morning. Two eagles have been confirmed to be present at the nest as of this morning. One has been generally staying higher in the tree (above the camera). The behavior we are seeing from the adult eagles is a little different than is typical. At this point U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service staff are working to confirm whether these two eagles are the mating pair. More information will follow soon.

I wonder if Belle knows where Lib is (hurt?)and goes to him during her long absences, trying to coax him to return. Sort of like the dog in Japan that led the searchers to the injured dog that he had stayed by its side.

She's back!

WV sUSAn said...

On the road and checking updates. Thanks for latest, Paula, will continue to watch still cam and read as the miles go by.

I see many new names showing up here and just wanted to let everybody know we have a group of momsters and dadsters meeting at Rumsey Tavern tonight at 6:30 located at the Clarion in Sheptown. Come on out if you can as all are invited. We have reservations but if you can make it, we'll just scoot a few more chairs to the tables.

Unfortunately the nest looks the same as when we left Ctown. Eyes to the sky folks and looking for our boy to show up soon. Belle, get out there and show that intruder what a country girl is made of and kick some eagle tailfeathers.

PammySue said...

She just settled back in. No food. :(

If I had to guess, I would say she is only going as far as a higher branch on the tree. I think if she left, food would be a priority.

movin said...

Maybe because there is an Osprey on the BWO nest now, the BWE adults are spending more time together on their nest than usual. Especially around meal time.

movin said...

Pammy Sue - If you read up to WVsUSAn's remark - would you be available to come over.

Mema Jo said...

I have been home for a few & trying to get up-to-date & absorb all of your ideas.

I will be at the Rumsey this evening...Just spoke to Lynn to hear quickly what has been going on.

PammySue said...

Mema Jo, unfortunately, I already committed to a friend for tonight.

Movin, I agree. She is too afraid to leave her nest to get food.
I wish I could drive over there and put a fish on the picnic table at that building on the right side of the nest. lol Would she even pick something like that up?

Heather said...

So is it possible that every time she "leaves" the nest she is really just sitting above the nest, still protecting the nest? I can't imagine she would fly off and feed herself without bringing food back for the little one. So she herself has not eaten, possibly. This is so difficult to watch.

paula eagleholic said...

Very possible, Heather. But I also think in her leaving the nest, that maybe she is trying to get the intruder to follow her away from the nest. Not sure she would leave the nest unattended with the intruder right overhead.

paula eagleholic said...

She is looking up again.

Pammy are you on the momster email?

Heather said...

Yes, maybe that's the case. Either way it's unlikely she has had any food herself, right? I worry not just for the little one, but for momma as well.

paula eagleholic said...

Joy is back there bobbing around, just saw top of her head.

CarolAnne said...

Do we know when the last time the intruder was actually spotted on camera? When was Belle's last defensive act?

paula eagleholic said...

Belle Off to the right.

paula eagleholic said...

She chased the intruder off this morning, but we couldn't see the intruder on the cam.

Robyn said...

When I leave for dinner I will take the back road near me and pass by NCTC and go real slow and see if I can see anything, if I remember that my binocs are in the back of truck I will use them if I see anything flying overhead.

Robyn said...

Paula would she go near the ground by nest and pick off one of the critters down there or would she prefer to keep the nest in view?

PammySue said...

Paula, yes I am on the Momster's email. Although I must admit that I have been very lax in checking my email for quite some time. Shame, shame.

From the nest update page...

March 18, 2011 - 3:00 PM

While we are still working to confirm what the current situation is with the adult eagles, we would like to remind all of our dedicated eagle fans that the eagles who nest on the NCTC campus are wild birds. As such, they are exposed to the same environmental pressures any eagle faces in nature. While the NCTC camera provides us with an opportunity to observe these magnificent birds in their natural environment, it is not our policy to interfere with them in any way.

Ms Bookworm said...

Hi, Everyone,
It's taken a while for me to get back here--slept in late today (unintentionally), and have been trying to catch up.

I'm glad that PO'J still seems to be strong and active. I, too, wonder whether the 2nd egg could still be viable. Hope NCTC can give us an update soon.

Like Sharon, I've GOT to get some work done! Will keep the live cam sound turned up, and will keep checking in on my breaks. Praying and hoping for the best possible outcome! Wishing and praying for a safe trip for those traveling to S'town, too! Sure wish I could be there too, but it's just too far. :o[
With you in spirit, though! BBL....

PammySue said...

I am REALLY leaving this time. Craig has already called me about 14 times asking if I'm ready.

Robyn said...

I believe they posted that Hedgie because the OC forum keeps asking why they wont intervene and it is becoming annoying. It is mostly for the OC crew as we know how this works

hedgie said...

I do think that we can be fairly certain that egg #2 is not going to hatch......wonder if Belle would cannabalize it to feed O'Joy??

Mema Jo said...

I personally don't think that NCTC was prompted by the remarks over on the forum - I thought they took that away from the cam page???

Mema Jo said...

Hedgie - that is why I asked it you thought that egg was still whole. Belle, with her back to us, seem to be feeding Joy -at lease the motions were there.

hedgie said...

Good for your brother, Robyn! Thank him for his service for me, please.

And off she goes again.

Robyn said...

They have a the forum they use, several are misinformed and speaking out on their emotions. Several keep bringing up about NCTC not doing anything and why when others do. Which isn't always the case. They don't understnd NCTC is a training ground for government employees etc.

Hedgie I was thinking the same thing, sadly in some cases life needs to prevail and if that is what it takes it is considered survival, as sad and depressing as it sounds.

Robyn said...

OK, I need a break and my school work is suffering, I need to get clothes out of dryer or I will be showing up in PJ's and need to get ready myself or I wont make it...bbs

Lynne2 said...

sounds like Belle landed near the mike when she took off.

I saw something that made me laugh while I was out. A mocking bird was sitting on a light post, singing many songs. Then a crow showed up on a nearby light post and started cawing. Then he stopped, and the mocking bird starting cawing, then the MB would stop and the crow would start again! It went on for a good 2 or 3 minutes and then the crow started bouncing his head up and down toward the MB and flew off!

Mema Jo said...

Robyn, tell Scott Congratulations on a job well done.

paula eagleholic said...

Robyn, sent you an email

Mema Jo said...

Lynne - so glad you were able to witness one of the miracles of the Mocking bird...... crazy!!

Lynne2 said...

I think Lori's latest thinking on her post just after the split is a pretty reasonable one. The only thing, the only SAD thing, is that at some point, depending on how long this goes on with the intruder, we could loose Joy. Belle may have had a goodly amount of food in her crop to sustain her....adult raptors can feed on that for several days. But they cannot regurgitate it out for the babies to share.

I guess unless the second egg hatches, we will never know if Joy is the first egg, or the second. I have often wondered if that day early on when the adults left the egg uncovered for almost 2 hours may have ruined it. On the other hand, like Jim said, Joy is pretty sturdy for a new hatch so maybe she was a 40 day baby!

Lynne2 said...

yeah Jo, mocking birds are a RIOT! I actually like it when the sing and sing in the middle of the night!

Robyn said...

We have had mockingbirds singing in our yard at all hours of the night. Will used to complain because they sat in the tree in the front yard near his bedroom window.

They are feisty characters and really like to try to take over. Many times we have had them declare ownership of our yard and fuss at us if we ventured into "their" space.

Have usually not felt too threatened by mockingbirds, though. We did get dive bombed when we got too close to the baby.

Belle looks fierce and watchful this afternoon.

I jsut want to offer a thought here and please do not take this wrong.
I am a ground observer with falcons and work with the biologists.

When our male went missing, 2 years ago, (no intruder though) our female did what Belle is doing. The difference is , we did not have hatches yet.I observed day and night for a few days and when the female finally had to go and hunt,
Our biologists retrieved the eggs so they would be able to be incubated. They will also retrieve chicks if necessary.

I am not sure if Eagles are like falcons, but they have stashes of food and Belle may be going to some of those stashes. She may have some in her mouth we do not know about.

but I am also praying that Lib is just away like the male was that year in Maine ,in 2007. He returned 2 days later , I believe.

Let us keep praying . Every site is different. and every biologists thoughts are different.

I feel we should always help out , when in need. Nature is nature but what we do not see ,we do not know. But what we can see, we should help.
A lot of biologists agree with this thought. But I will not criticize those that do not. It has no place here.

god bless this site.
I have to leave for a bit but will return to check.

Hang in there.

Hi Margy,

I kind of enjoyed the mockingbirds' singing, too, but Will fussed!

The trees they sat in to sing came down in storms, and I haven't seen quite as much of them since then.

Thanks, Bev. All we can do at this point is watch and wait and hope for a good outcome at some point.

As hard as it has been, we have really been learning about eagles from our window on nature. I think it is important for us to record what we observe as objectively as possible.

Just so you know, I am still here and reading the blog posts, just haven't looked at the camera while I am working. My heart breaks too much. I really am praying for God's will to happen in this and for me to have acceptance. It is what it is.
