I have gotten inquiries from folks about getting more info on what's going on and also requests that the NCTC do something to assist the birds.
I need to repeat that we all understand that this episode is unsettling to everyone, but it is one of the risks of having the cam in place--you get to see the wonderful things and the not so wonderful as well.
Wild nature is not always a happy place...the best thing to do is not to interfere in any way.
FWS biologists have been aware of this episode since it began and I suspect there will be more information put out tomorrow on the official cam website.

Sorry to see the challenger is still on site, but recalling Norfolk about 3 years ago, I'm not surprised. This particular situation seems weighted against the resident female in their instinctive program.
She has to care for the eggs/chicks and cannot leave to get food. The intruder is well fed, and all she has to do is wait and watch.
I'm sure Belle could drive Trudy off if she was able to get food... like the NBG female did after she abandoned her eggs and left to get food. After she returned, the intruder was not seen again....

DanaMo...welcome to the blog! The other egg is not going to hatch. It's been too long.
There has been an intruder which has prevented Liberty, the male, from bringing food to the nest. Belle, the female, has been defending the nest and chick.
This is the first time food has been brought to the nest, and the chick, Paddy O'Joy or POJ or PJ, hatched on the 17th. The chick is alarmingly still right now.
Paula, it's been more than 15 minutes
Okay, right now. Strong group prayer.
It would be the cruelest irony if PJ expired right before Belle was finally able to bring a fish.
How long has it been since anyone saw the POJ move?
OMG Belle does have a nice, big, juicy fish.
Did Paula report that Belle left to fish??

OMG, I'll have to go away more often!Fubby just reminded me that on my way thru the dining room, I rubbed St. Francis' head. Belle finally moved enough so I could see that white by her foot was FISH, not stick!!!!!!I assume that Paddy got fed & that is why s/he is napping.

Yes, PJ was moving and accepting something from Belle earlier. I left for church so do not know the last time anyone saw PJ moving.

I think she would feed PJ if PJ was raising her head. Prayers that PJ is just sleeping.
When I enlarged my screen you could see PJ breathing.
I can't bear to watch this. My eyes are so full of tears worrying about little PJ not moving and now that his mommy has food for him.
PJ has not moved for at least 20 minutes...in my experience, babies do sleep soundly after being well fed, but wake up about 20-30 minutes after...
We have to hope that Belle will nudge PJ and PJ will put his little head up and she can give him more food, which will help bring him around...

I was looking at the chick with a magnifier, and I "thought" I saw shallow breathing.

PJ did the same thing yesterday afternoon. Think about it. The nice warm sun shining down. That's what PJ does when under Belle. Dozing I am sure.
I know in years past, although I know much different circumstances, we have been convinced an eaglet was dead and just popped right up so yes, Paula, I am keeping the faith.

Christine, the second egg will not be hatching. It was either never viable, or it died. It's been too long.

I'm sorry......I have looked with the magno, and I cannot see any breathing or movement. The only thing I can see is Joy's little white fluff blowing so softly in the breeze. The sun is shining very bright which is sort of washing out the details. But even during sleep, I have seen her make little head movement or wing movements and I have not seen anything. It could be too subtle to see for sure........

Iris thank you for the email well both of them. I read the first and started to rejoice and my gut said oh hmmm another one and i was then prepared for what we are seeing and not seeing.
I want to see that little one live BUT I can rejoice that belle has had osme food and that Lib is alive and well. You take it where you can get it about now.

It's true Lolly, Belle has hardly moved either except to turn her head from side to side.
Not once has she nudged or tried to wake the eaglet to feed. It has been quite a while now.

Belle is the only eagle around , just a couple of small hawks soaring
50 minutes since she brought in the fish. She looked like she ate a little bit or tore into it a bit at first, but nothing since.
It was very shortly after two when Belle landed with the fish. We have not seen the eaglet move for about an hour. God bless you little Paddy O'Joy!
I am now getting a spasm in my shoulder. Time for me to leave here for a while...a short while.
There is the shadow of a twig over the baby's head and I see it moving but not POJ. I am praying but I am afraid we have lost her.
Not sure of exact time, but when I came back here, Belle did pull skin off side of fish & ate it.

I am in tears, I can't help it. The image of Belle standing there with the fish... the fish they struggled to get and finally did... not eating it, waiting for PJ, who was moving just over an hour ago, is just heartbreaking. I pray for a miracle but cannot stop the tears. Bless this eagle family.

I think we all need to face it now...as horridly cruel as it is, I think PJ could not wait any longer, and Belle was just barely too late...

Sadly if O'Joy is not with us any longer, we need to hope now Belle can do what needs to be done and eagle slap that intruder and chase her off for good.
As hard as this has been on all of us, we knew that Belle could not defend her territory while raising a young. Is there any chance she can have another clutch or is it too late?
If PJ is gone, the other egg is not viable, and it is too late to have another clutch, will they leave the nest?
I think it's too late to try again, honestly, but if Trudy can be chased off....who knows. But, honestly, I think Belle & Liberty's nesting season is over for this year.
I was wondering the same thing Robyn. That Belle will now be able to get about the business of running Trudy off, and maybe it's not too late for another clutch. BUt I don't know....no experience with this

I imagine it is too late, Robyn. We can just hope they come back to this nest next year. Little did I know when I watched the nest three years ago, and they raised 3 successfuly, what a beautiful rarity it was to see.
Well I will just say my stuff here at home alone. Dex hasn't a clue whats wrong but he won't be offended or anything. Love ya all. I really just want Belle to go be with Lib now and get her strength and energy back. What a nightmare this has been. Cruelist imaginable ending . Sorry but it is. Nature being what it is, well, there are scavengers out there. So I guess I just want to advise Viewer Caution when watching from this point on.
This is such a heartbreaking moment...am I the only blubbering idiot right now? Guess I;m really sensitive. Will they turn the camera off for the season now?
I was worried that Belle might not make it, not knowing how much if any nourishment SHE was getting through all this, with who knows how much physical fighting she had to do and how much fluid feeding she did - literally, giving everything she had to try to save her eaglet.
I'm trying to see the silver lining: that the outcome could have been much worse, that Belle could have been severely malnourished or mortally injured as a result of fighting off the intruder.

I too was getting very worried about Belle. I still cry albeit not quite so uncontrollably even as I type this over the loss of our sweet wee one. I remain angry at all sorts of things etc. BUT I want Belle and Lib to be OK. I want them to be together. I do not think we will see another cluth from them this year and sorry to say perhaps not even in this tree. Yes I do remember Norfolk and they moved back to their old tree and have stayed there. BUT they have also stayed a pair. I will not be opening the cam anymore this season.
