Monday

Here's the update from FWS:

March 21
Over the weekend, we were able to confirm the presence of a third adult eagle near the nest, and we are almost certain that it is a breeding age female.  Typically, the presence of a new female means she is competing with the established pair of eagles for the current nest.  Nest competition is a common occurrence in areas with healthy eagle populations, meaning the total population of eagles near NCTC has likely increased in recent years.

We have also confirmed multiple sightings of the male eagle who is part of the established breeding pair.  The male does not appear to be injured, and appears to be in good health.  The eaglet which hatched on March 17th has died and the remaining egg is not likely to hatch given that it is not being regularly incubated by the parents.

We do have biologists on staff here at NCTC who have been offering their expert assessments of the situation. In addition, our land manager has been communicating with another raptor biologist based in our Chesapeake Bay field office.  There is general agreement among our biologists that if the new female eagle is successful in chasing off the current female, the new female will then need to recruit a male to join her.  However, it is likely too late in the nesting season for success in laying, incubating and hatching any new eggs.

You may wonder why there is competition over this nest - and there are several potential factors.  Eagles prefer to nest in the tops of large trees located near rivers, lakes, and other wetlands.  The NCTC nest is located very close to the Potomac River, which is a plentiful source of fish for nesting eagles to hunt.  In addition, eagle nests represent a considerable investment of effort to construct:  they can be up to 10 feet in diameter and weigh up to 2,000 lbs.  And finally, as mentioned above, nest competition frequently occurs in areas with a significant eagle population.
All I can add to this is to thank you for your concern, passion and understanding that intervention in this episode was not the right thing to do.  Things don't always work out the way we'd like in nature, but I think we would all agree that we have gotten a rare glimpse, these past few days, into the world of bald eagles that most people do not see or will ever know about.  The fact that we have competition such as this is speaks well for the recovery of the Bald Eagle, a species that was nearly extinct fifty years ago.

New thread.

Teresia, Lib won't fight the female. Only Belle will. the nest and territory are the female's to defend against other eagles, but both will fight any other type of intruder together, like hawks or whatever.

Hi
I have not been able to do much watching or reading, more watching than reading,
saw some of the events of the day

was just wondering.....has Liberty made an appearance at all today?

Hope all are well...

I never saw Lib in the nest today- just my opinion.
At least Belle finally got to eat that fish in peace.

Mema Jo said...

Paula are you home?

paula eagleholic said...

I would guess Belle isn't feeling a need to return to the nest as quickly, when she goes out because she knows her brood is gone...but she still doesn't want Turdy in the nest.

Good girl...all gone

Jewels said...

ahhh yes, fish is all gone!! none left for the OLE Biddy!!!

Hello everyone! I began watching Belle and Liberty's nest shortly before the first egg was laid, I came across the nest cam through facebook and was excited to find it. I express my sincere sympathy to all of you who obviously have developed a strong connection to this beautiful pair of Eagles. I have become rather fond of them myself. Let me introduce myself, my name is Kathy, and I live in a beautiful little Valley in Northern Utah. I am a wife, a mother and a Wildlife Artist. My work as an artist gets me up close and personal with wildlife and I love it. I love learning all I can about the animals I paint and how they live. Bald Eagles are one of my favorite subjects! While it has not been an easy thing to watch, the last few days have taught me a lot about these amazing birds. Thank you for letting me be a part of it.

Lynne2 said...

Turdy....oh my what have I done?

paula eagleholic said...

JO, not yet.

signgirl said...

@ Mema Jo, Thanks for the info...I'm getting confused. Guess i'm tired from not leaving the computer today!

Eagle-Eyed Shar said...

And off she went.

mariadangeloart said...

Well whatever is going on, it's fascinating and a great learning experience. I agree with Paula, I hope an expert observes this and sheds some light as to what is going on.

Belle flew out to the right.

Hi Kathy and welcome!

OMG Again? I have been missing all the action today, but that is good!

Have caught up, now back outside. I am pulling and digging weeds ferociously, wishing I was destroying Turdy. (I can talk tough!)

Maybe later or in the morning, would be nice wouldn't it

Okay take care, have a good night

I'll email the still pics tomorrow that I got this afternoon. Sure looks like Lib made an appearance at bout 3:30.

We need an expert for certain to sort all this out. Empty nest now. So glad B finally ate that fish

OK I need to run out and get my errands completed, I guess I will catch up when I get home...

wow what an empty nest

mariadangeloart said...

Stunning work Kathryn!

paula eagleholic said...

I don't think we'll see Lib on the nest until this is settled, IMHO

signgirl said...

Thank you for answering my question also Lynne2. Sorry I'm slow at posting.

Jewels said...

empty nest now for 10 min or so... not even the ole Biddy coming in.. hmmm

mariadangeloart said...

So sad to see the nest empty like this :(

bev. said...

I hate it when a nest is empty..

It needs a bit of fixing up(that is your que Lib)
I heard an eagle call just now

I am so used to observing from the ground that it kills me when I cannot see what is happening.

Maybe Belle and Lib are having some quiet time.

It will be interesting to see if anyone spends the night here.

paula eagleholic said...

Hmmm Bev....I am thinking no because she buried Paddy and the egg. But perhaps yes to keep the nest as hers....maybe roost up top?

bev. said...

I am so glad Belle did that .

Hopefully we see her before dark.

bev. said...

I really must go and see about supper, but will be back.

I feel really empty right now.

Mema Jo said...

There isn't any thing in the nest for Belle to be there.... I'm thinking she will be up top branch

Don't know where the other female will roost - nor Lib

What are we calling our 'spot-on-the head' female eagle?

Ms Bookworm said...

Hi, Gang,
I'm back again to let you know that Hubby just got home. I've managed to sort of catch up here. VERY glad to see that PO'J and the egg are now covered up again. So the saga continues!?! How long, I wonder, will this continue?!

I have somehow managed to get a bit more homework done. Need to go spend some time with a badly neglected Hubby and puppy. I'll be back later, probably after dinner. Hope I can manage to get caught up again! Please know that I am with all of you in spirit. Don't know what I'd be doing without all of you!!! Love you! BBL.... P.S.--Belle, chase that hussy to the next STATE!

floralgirl said...

Yes I would guess she would roost in the tree unless turdy tries to get in the nest. But I guess we won't know until we see what happens.

Eagle-Eyed Shar said...

We just thought we had empty nest syndrome before. This is horrible.

Eagle-Eyed Shar said...

But at the same time I am so grateful that Belle is not trying to still incubate that egg.

bev. said...

I am calling her Hussy, but in all fairness, she is following her instinct.

Belle at one point followed hers

I just wish they would make some rules , that once eggs are laid, hands off someone elses nest.

but I guess if we humans can't manage that , how do we expect the raptors to. LOL

Mema Jo said...

Bev. We'll give you the duty of ground watching at NCTC nest. You won't mind because your kitchen is all torn up!

Lynne2 said...

well Jo, Trudy (for intruder) seems to have become Turdy (due to my typos) and it's a better name since no one likes her anyway. But she's a Hussy. Turdy Hussy. ?

signgirl said...

I have to cook dinner now. Thanks for a great day observing. I will try to keep up through the blog. i hate going back to work Tuesday. i took the day to be with kindered spirits and I was. Good luck my sweet Belle, kick butt! Thank you all. It has been interesting!!!! I will catch up after work.

Eagle-Eyed Shar said...

For sure if I posted on the blog what all I have called her, I would be permanently evicted from here.

Lynne2 said...

True Bev, she is only doing what her instincts dictate, just like Lib and Belle, whether we like it or not.

Mema Jo said...

Yes, Sharon - this is so much worst than MT nest - This is 'who is going to claim the nest'

Eagle-Eyed Shar said...

I think Belle is back.

Mema Jo said...

Megan can't you find us a good song
for this occasion?

Lynne2 said...

Stubby is home, going to fix dinnner and spend some time with him.

Hmmm. Maybe Subby, not Stubby. You could get a wrong impression from that......

mariadangeloart said...

Try as I might, I can't hate this bird. She's just doing what her instinct is telling her to do and for all we know we might have seen her hatched in a nest at one point and struggle for survival too.

Lynne2 said...

there is an Elton John song called "the Bitch is Back" LOL!

Lynne2 said...

yeah, I hate what's happening to our birds because of her, but I guess i don't hate her. I'm sure not happy though!

Eagle-Eyed Shar said...

She just knocked that B***H out of the nest.

SusanP said...

Was that Lib that just landed on Belle's back? Didn't look big enuf for the turd

bev. said...

MemaJo,
You are right about that. That is why I got hooked here again LOL

I will be in this state for a bit yet.
But I am going to try and manage to serve meatloaf from the deli. I am tired of eating out.

And I should spend time with hubby

Belle back and digging again
Husssy just came in and Belle jumped on top of her and she flew off.
Belle is starting to show her.

I don't hate the new female eagle per sa - I don't like her position in this case.

I have just arrived home and wanted to say Thank you to Steve for the information. I will try to put it into terms that my 5 year old kindergarteners can understand when I return to the classroom. I have been away doing a college visit with my second oldest.
I think, that although sad about this situation, it is wonderful that we have had this opportunity and I hope that we can continue to follow Belle and Liberty in the future.
Thanks again Steve, especially for allowing us to use this blog as a place for us all to express our emotions and join together.

DanaMo said...

By the way...who is on the nest now? Is it Belle? I haven't been home long enough to figure it out.

okay...I see it's Belle now. How long will she stick around? Will she stay at the nest for a while?

PammySue said...

I have been in and out today. I admit I have not read every single post. That is a LOT of reading that I just can't find the time for right now.

But from what I have read, I do like the variation on the the name Trudy. ;) Turdy is very fitting.

And I hope Belle did jump on Turdy's back and head butt her!

And it is a good point that, as much as we dislike Turdy, she is acting on instinct. Guess we have to understand that.

paula eagleholic said...

BTW, I received an email from Randy R at NCTC today...I sent him my Sunday synopsis since he was away all weekend.

He replied back and said he was glad to hear Lib was OK, and that it was the females on and off the nest all afternoon.

Mema Jo said...

The night light has come on at the nest
I see no reason for Belle to lie down in the nest and tuck her head under her wing other then to be certain no
one else comes into the nest.

I think she may head up to the limb
unless it is taken.

IrisF said...

Actually Pammy Sue, Belle didn't head butt her as much as she actually butted HUSSY in the side and back with her head...twice at least causing Hussy to almost fall over the side. I'm not sure she didn't fall, but if she did she recoved quickly and flew down toward the ground at somewhere between 11 and 12 o'clock..

IrisF said...

Raining?

Mema Jo said...

Glad you made it home safely.
No action in the nest.
Belle has been in the nest for quite
a while. I think she is standing her ground..... Breezy outside

bev. said...

Genie,
I wondered the same thing when i started posting , about the trash can.( I was thinking I was trashLOl)

Bless Belle.
Patiently sits or stands ,in the wind, facing 12.

God is giving her strength.

someone was mentioning Couerd'lene(sp) awhile back.

can't remember who.But we used to camp there every summer when I was a kid. Was raised in southern Alberta and so it was not that far from us. Beautiful place . We loved the lake ,as we just had cold mountain water.

tonight's nest weather forecast-
Mostly cloudy. Scattered showers and thunderstorms this evening. Some thunderstorms may produce gusty winds and small hail this evening. Lows in the mid 40s. Northwest winds 10 to 15 mph. Chance of rain 50 percent.
It's still almost 70° here now, and breezy.

Eagle-Eyed Shar said...

I am back and things look pretty calm right now. Grateful for that.

I hope there will be a video clip of Belle whooping Turdy's butt. That would be fun to watch.

informed and you synopsis does that.
Now the scene at the nest - the burial and then the uprooting of the chick needs to be recorded.

floralgirl said...

Just about dark here now, I can hear the peepers singing on the live feed.

Mema Jo said...

I really wonder if Lib still takes the
top limb... but you said the hussy chases him away. So that all for that

bev. said...

it is just 5:53pm where I am, adn no peepers, just cold wind and a few snowflakes.

Bird Girl said...

Steve, just want to tell you how awesome you are for providing this blog for us, even taking time out of your personal life for us.

I also want to say thank you for this information.

To the Momsters: Most of you know that I'm a wild bird rehabilitator, and because of that I work with our Game & Fish department. Their Adobe Mountain Dam Wildlife Rehabilitation Center is the office which directly supervises my group, Fallen Feathers. Adobe Dam has a pair of Bald eagles which are permanent residents; one of their volunteers is a friend of mine and sometimes brings birds to my group, or takes birds from us.

I have sent her a synopsis of our situation and several questions. I will let you know what she says in response.

bev. said...

I am sending a message to our biologists here also, to see what they can make of it.

Costume Lady said...

I haven't witnessed anything today, and so I don't have a knot in my tummy...glad I didn't see the burial.
Had to leave the house EARLY this morning to take GG to Dorothy McCormick Hospital/Clinic for routine blood work.
Went to Shoney's for breakfast and while we were there, saw 7-10 police cars on the bridge of King St., near the I-81 exit. A black SUV was parked in the middle of all those cruisers.
LYNN, any idea what was going on? So very curious!

Got my cortisone shot this afternoon and feeling pretty good!

Need LMX4 Cream to numb my skull...er...forhead an hour before thingys are removed. Can't find it anywhere. Told Dr DeBord that at the price it will cost for the removal of thingys, Dr. should numb me!??? He thinks the same as I do:)

Hey everyone...just wanted to get a bit of positive thought for myself tomorrow, if that's okay.

I have to have a biopsy, which they will be testing for breast cancer. The doctors are fairly positive, but of course they cannot say for sure without the pathology.

I've already had cancer twice, different kinds, completely unrelated, so they want to make absolutely sure.

As soon as I have the results, I'll let you know, but it might not be for a few days or even next week.

Thanks for your support, my Momster and Dadster friends :)

wushi = sushi that comes from the 'whales' that Lib brings in.

Jo, it might be lightening. I think there might be some scattered storms out there.

Nestorations-moving of sticks and branches but we sometimes say "moving furniture around".

We also turn on the nightlight each night (Judie does that) and set up our security system so that nobody can break into our happy home (Andy does that).

Well everyone, I have such a cold/sinus infection that I think I'll head for bed and see if sleep comes. Coughing might just get in the way of that desire, but I need to try.

Prayers being said for all in need and especially for Belle, Lib and the Sycamore Palace

And what happens to you if you do not have an airbag on your computer!

Eagle-Eyed Shar said...

Okay, so who screwed up and didn't turn on the security system and let this scuz-bucket/scum-bag invade our nest?

Lolly said...

And just remembered

tilk.....what you do to your laptop screen to see better at night.

One I like is when the eagles is in a pouring rain, or strong wind, and her white feathers are all straggly...she is "having a bad hair day"

bev. - I think Beans and Skipper sound like my kind of people. There was a lady in Winchester, Virginia that had a pair of lawn decoration-type geese that she dressed up for every occasion throughout the year. She dressed them for Valentine's Day, St. Patricks's Day, prom, Halloween. I loved it. It was even covered by the local paper once.
Someone stole them, so she stopped doing it. That made me sad. I thought she was incredibly creative with her geese.

Good question, Sharon. It sounds like we need to improve the security system. No hussies allowed.

Shirley, "faceplant into the keyboard." Hilarious.

You guys are making me giggle tonight.

PammySue: On the road up to Jerome, a mining town in AZ, there is a house with a pair of flamingo lawn ornaments attached to the mailbox. They're always dressed for the season!

It has been another long day both for nest drama and for paper grading drama.

I see Belle has been in the nest for quite some time and appears to be settled for the night.

As for Turdy -- I know a place where she can go never to be found again. It is located far far away under a large snow drift near a deceased washer. Only the garland knows the way.
Please let tomorrow be a day of quiet rest and recuperation for Belle, Lib, and all the momsters and dadsters.

It is time. The sandperson is on the way down the hall. I will turn on the night light for others coming in. Be back tomorrow afternoon.
