Monday

Here's the update from FWS:

March 21
Over the weekend, we were able to confirm the presence of a third adult eagle near the nest, and we are almost certain that it is a breeding age female.  Typically, the presence of a new female means she is competing with the established pair of eagles for the current nest.  Nest competition is a common occurrence in areas with healthy eagle populations, meaning the total population of eagles near NCTC has likely increased in recent years.

We have also confirmed multiple sightings of the male eagle who is part of the established breeding pair.  The male does not appear to be injured, and appears to be in good health.  The eaglet which hatched on March 17th has died and the remaining egg is not likely to hatch given that it is not being regularly incubated by the parents.

We do have biologists on staff here at NCTC who have been offering their expert assessments of the situation. In addition, our land manager has been communicating with another raptor biologist based in our Chesapeake Bay field office.  There is general agreement among our biologists that if the new female eagle is successful in chasing off the current female, the new female will then need to recruit a male to join her.  However, it is likely too late in the nesting season for success in laying, incubating and hatching any new eggs.

You may wonder why there is competition over this nest - and there are several potential factors.  Eagles prefer to nest in the tops of large trees located near rivers, lakes, and other wetlands.  The NCTC nest is located very close to the Potomac River, which is a plentiful source of fish for nesting eagles to hunt.  In addition, eagle nests represent a considerable investment of effort to construct:  they can be up to 10 feet in diameter and weigh up to 2,000 lbs.  And finally, as mentioned above, nest competition frequently occurs in areas with a significant eagle population.
All I can add to this is to thank you for your concern, passion and understanding that intervention in this episode was not the right thing to do.  Things don't always work out the way we'd like in nature, but I think we would all agree that we have gotten a rare glimpse, these past few days, into the world of bald eagles that most people do not see or will ever know about.  The fact that we have competition such as this is speaks well for the recovery of the Bald Eagle, a species that was nearly extinct fifty years ago.

Kathryn, your art is beautiful!

bev. Think I've heard of Skipper from Hancock forum? He once posted a link on how to do screen captures which I saved in My Faves & started using 2 years ago!!I was reading a lot then around the time the Mom eagle brought the Teddy Bear to nest!!!

I think turdy is a Perfect name!

We'll have to tell about Ceil's outdoor Xmas garland blowing away & being spotted worldwide. Then when old cars, appliances, etc, croaked, they went the way of the garland. I'll have to find my pic on blog of it seen from an airplane!
Will put link later---dryer is calling.
Delphia, BirdGirl, you are one special expert to have been with us this past weekend. Want to extend prayers & good thoughts for your biopsy. Been there, done that, too. And once you've had something, seems they are overly cautious about everything they see. Which is probably how it should be.

Yes, Judie!! I could not remember that one. Was trying to.

Sorry for that confusing post a few minutes ago. Wanted to do a test, cause last time it took forever to be able to post.

I just wanted to say how sorry I am to hear about the loss of your little eaglet. I have not been on since my last post on Friday. My two oldest boys have been fascinated with this cam ever since they got to witness Belle laying one of the eggs. Based on what I saw on Friday, I had a pretty good feeling that this would be the outcome, and I didn't want the boys to get upset seeing something happen to the new chick.

After logging on, I WAS going to read back through the blog. HOLY COW!! That would take me two days. I have never seen so many posts! That said, can someone PLEASE fill me in on what has transpired the last few days. Has it been determined that this intruder is a fourth year female? Is Lib still in the area, and if so, has there been any courting between him and the intruder? Any info would be much appreciated. Don't want to be a pest, I just really don't have the time to read back through thousands of posts! THANKS

NatureNut said...

Glad TJ made it on---yes, Shar, Margy's letter of events would be good to read.

Mema Jo said...

TJ Is there any way we could email you Paula's synopsis?

There is a female intruder
Belle would not leave the nest for food
Liberty has not been at the nest since
the fight for the nest began
Eaglet died we think due to no food
Belle buried the unhatched egg and the
eaglet
The intruder came into the nest and
dug up the grave & pulled eaglet out
That was a horrible scene
Belle came in and wacked her (hussy)

Lolly said...

TJ, need to find Paula's report on the weekend for you to read. Better yet someone might be able to email it to you.

It has been horrendous! Lib is okay and still in the area. Sunday is when Paddy died. There were several on the ground watching the antics in the air.

paula eagleholic said...

I have posed that question to another biologist, Lolly, but I can ask TJ as well.

TJ said...

O.K. Thanks for the info. I also just skimmed back through the last 600 or so posts and got SOMEWHAT up to speed.

I just can't believe the luck this pair has! The blizzard last year, and now this. I just find it horribly ironic that if this intruding female had showed up just a few days later, maybe just a day later, the outcome may have been completely different. In our experience, it seems as though it takes the pressence of chicks in the nest to really boost the male's parental instincts. Males WILL help defend against intruding females, but USUALLY not until chicks have actually hatched. Given the fact that Lib never even knew there was a chick in the nest, I am not surprised that he backed off and let this be a war between females.

Things could get very interesting over the next few days. If anyone gets out to the area, watch for any courting behavior between Lib and the intruding female. We've seen males courting both his current mate AND the female trying to take over the territory. It's almost like they're trying to cover their bases. It's in their best interest to mate with the strongest females. That said, it seems like the resident birds usually have the upper hand. We saw a somewhat small female successfully defend against a HUGE female. Maybe it's because they have nothing to gain and everything to lose.

Hi, Everyone,
Finally making it back here after dinner.

Delphia/Bird Girl, many prayers for a good result for your biopsy!

TJ, hope your twin feels better VERY soon! Prayers for that, too!

I think I sort of caught up here. Boy, talk about a LOT of posts!

I have had the security systems set to go on automatically. I think that Turdy Birdie must fly BELOW the radar! Judie, hope you can arrange a flying escort for her--to another universe!

I am so hoping that things will get back to normal for Belle and Lib VERY soon! Praying for God's protection on both of them!

Right now I need to go spend some time with Emma. She goes to the vet in the morning for her spay surgery.

I have said prayers for everyone and every creature tonight. Judie turned on the night light. I am making sure the porch light is on. The eye-scanner security and Dana's thumbprint-scanner security are enabled. I'm praying that we ALL get a restful, restorative night's sleep tonight! I will be back in the morning to touch base with all of you.
God bless, and goodnight! Love each and every one of you! :o]

If you are Tricky Vicky...
There is an intruder at the Sycamore tree and Belle and intruder fought and Belle landed with her foot on baby Joy, It later died:(

PammySue said...

Vicki, this is a very abbreviated run-down: The eagle pair, Liberty and Belle, had two eggs. One hatched on St. Patrick's Day and the eaglet was named Paddy O'Joy. Around that same time, an intruder eagle, believed to be female, showed up.
The intruder kept Liberty from feeding the eaglet and it passed away yesterday afternoon.
The intruder (we call her Trudy or Turdy - haha) has landed in the nest multiple times and Belle has run her out. She seems to want the nest for herself.

Well, my rump hurts from sitting in this chair, so I am going to say goodnight.

Let's hope Dirty Turdy Hussy Birdy gets the message tomorrow.

Sweet dreams, everyone.

Belle is up and moving about the nest bowl, she is peeking down into what used to be the egg cup :(

paula eagleholic said...

Kind of hard to tell on the slo mo, but it looks like she is doing a little digging in the cup, maybe trying to cover up Paddy and the egg better.

Now she is looking off to the right.

I needed a good break and decided to nerd out on some world of warcraft. Went thru the posts all seems quiet, I'll pop open the cam and check it out.

Bird Girl hope all goes well for you tomorrow.

I asked Dr Sharpe on the CHIL/IWS forum about Belle feeding Paddy with the secretions, (I put the video link in) and the information that kickingbird posted,

From Delaware Valley Raptor Center:

"Raptors have a salt-excreting gland in their nares [nostrils], located in the nasal orbits, that can secrete sodium and chloride ions to help regulate these electrolytes in their blood and tissue fluids. Falcons sneeze out these nasal gland secretions, while other raptors allow the fluid to flow from the nares to the end of the beak where it is then flicked off with repeated head shakes. When feeding their young, a salty fluid also flows from a raptor’s nares to the tip of the beak where it falls on the chick’s pieces of food. It is not yet known if this fluid has any nutritional value for the young."

Here is his response.

Yes, we've seen this with the eagles on cameras. I think the chick's vocalizations may increase the flow of saliva and/or secretions.

Belle is standing at about 3 in the nest, just to the right of the egg cup, looking left.

just came in before going to bed.

Lots of good insight today.

I have a few appointments tomorrow so I will not be here as much.

I am praying for Belle and Lib.
thanks for all the good dictionary words.

so night all, God bless and special prayers for all who need them

cheers

Robyn said...

Interesting Paula, so if the chicks vocalization can cause it to secrete maybe is plays a minor role insome kind of nutrition f only temporary, like a cring baby to a nusing mom?

paula eagleholic said...

Sounds that way, Robyn

Robyn said...

What is with Belle? She is just sitting there staring off...

PA Nana said...

I'll never catch up tonight 'cuz I'm tired.

Everone rest well tonight and I'll see you sometime tomorrow.

Rest well Lib.

goodnight & God bless.

Oh my, I haven't been able to read everything but I did see something about Belle burying Paddy and the egg, headbutting the intruder, and now I see her sitting on the edge of the nest at 3 o'clock position at this late hour.

I thought the blizzard burying her eggs last year was bad - but at least she and Lib had Palmer after all that.

Does not look like much rest for her tonight again.

paula eagleholic said...

Worst I've ever seen on cam, KB. I thought the raven stealing the Sidney egg was bad...and NBG's intruder wasn't half as bad.

paula eagleholic said...

Did you see my post just a couple of posts up? Excellent information you uncovered about the nares.

PA Nana said...

Jo, Lily got her new collar a few days ago.

Bye again.

kickngbird said...

Yes I did see it Paula. I did some internet research after watching Belle and Paddy - it was really touching to watch.

paula eagleholic said...

Thanks, again, KB.

I'm heading to bed...and I'm way late tonight :)

Hugs to all ♥

Woke up from dozing in lounge chair & see Belle is still standing up and beak pointed to 9.
Don't know if eyes opened or closed.?

Good answers from Dr. Sharpe, Paula. Here's ? that's been bothering me---would the saline liquid w/no food cause some dehydration? Guess it wouldn't matter in this case---no food is no food.

Good morning. I had to leave in a hurry to go to Chicago yesterday just as the hussy made her first appearance.

I've been home about 1 hour and have been reading like crazy but still not completely caught up. Must go to bed--have to get up at 5:30 am!

Belle was not tucked in when I first checked; she appeared to be watching. I checked a few moments ago and saw her digging a bit more, and now she is tucked in. Glad for that.

Thank you for your recaps of the horrific events of today. I must admit it was shocking that the hussy would do those things....

If someone has video or photos of her, could you post a link for me? I'm sure there are links here but I'm so tired & can't dig through the 793 comments.

What is the split?

Thank you all for being here. I will be checking in tomorrow but may not have the ability to post (at work I am "Emilee").

Hugs to you all.

Oh, no, Belle is back up and is digging again!

At least it is stil a nice night out, 64 a nice breeze and looks like the moon is shining.

Poor girl, she should be resting, looked like she was eating something but I can't see anything

Robyn said...

She flew off, not sure if to higher up tree or out...

My final post and I'm going to bed!

Poor Belle is alert and looking around. She is facing 9 but swerves her head around to 3. She can't sleep either. I wonder if the hussy is close by even at night. Something must truly be wrong with that eagle. I mean it--maybe she has some disorder that's making her act crazy???

Oooh, Belle is now facing 3 and whipping her head around like something is out there.

Why won't the hussy just leave????

Good night all. Hugs again.

Anonymous said...

I lied, that wasn't my final post!

Belle has flown off now, maybe to roost near Lib. One can only hope.

NatureNut said...

Just saw Belle fly off about 2-3 o'clock position. She had been trying to sleep standing & would jerk her head up. She did look straight up in tree awhile before she decided to leave. Turdy must be up there.

Good night--I'll be in big sleep deprivation mode!! ☺
