Monday

Here's the update from FWS:

March 21
Over the weekend, we were able to confirm the presence of a third adult eagle near the nest, and we are almost certain that it is a breeding age female.  Typically, the presence of a new female means she is competing with the established pair of eagles for the current nest.  Nest competition is a common occurrence in areas with healthy eagle populations, meaning the total population of eagles near NCTC has likely increased in recent years.

We have also confirmed multiple sightings of the male eagle who is part of the established breeding pair.  The male does not appear to be injured, and appears to be in good health.  The eaglet which hatched on March 17th has died and the remaining egg is not likely to hatch given that it is not being regularly incubated by the parents.

We do have biologists on staff here at NCTC who have been offering their expert assessments of the situation. In addition, our land manager has been communicating with another raptor biologist based in our Chesapeake Bay field office.  There is general agreement among our biologists that if the new female eagle is successful in chasing off the current female, the new female will then need to recruit a male to join her.  However, it is likely too late in the nesting season for success in laying, incubating and hatching any new eggs.

You may wonder why there is competition over this nest - and there are several potential factors.  Eagles prefer to nest in the tops of large trees located near rivers, lakes, and other wetlands.  The NCTC nest is located very close to the Potomac River, which is a plentiful source of fish for nesting eagles to hunt.  In addition, eagle nests represent a considerable investment of effort to construct:  they can be up to 10 feet in diameter and weigh up to 2,000 lbs.  And finally, as mentioned above, nest competition frequently occurs in areas with a significant eagle population.
All I can add to this is to thank you for your concern, passion and understanding that intervention in this episode was not the right thing to do.  Things don't always work out the way we'd like in nature, but I think we would all agree that we have gotten a rare glimpse, these past few days, into the world of bald eagles that most people do not see or will ever know about.  The fact that we have competition such as this is speaks well for the recovery of the Bald Eagle, a species that was nearly extinct fifty years ago.

New thread.

Hi, Everyone,
Oh, Lord, it has taken me half the day and longer to try to catch up here!

I fell asleep right after a late lunch yesterday, and slept like I was in a coma! Exhaustion, I'm sure.

Margy, your e-mailed letter was absolutely beautiful, and inspired!
Thank you SO very much!
Glo, your video in remembrance of PO'J is just beautiful beyond words!
Thank you, too!

I find myself still watching the live cam--can't help it--I am hooked for life! I do so hope that Belle kicks Trudy's feathery butt clear to the next county!!!!

I really SHOULD be getting copious amounts of homework done, but find myself unable to tear myself away. Oh, my, what AM I to do?!

I really can't thank all of you enough for the loving comments and the comradeship! The last few days have been horrible to get through, and couldn't have done it without every one of you! Thank you all so very much!
Oh, and before I forget, thank you, Jewell, for the link about grieving birds. Had me in tears yet again.

I truly hope that Belle will retain ownership of this nest, and she and Lib will continue as a couple! I have never heard of such a battle as the one that's going on right now!

Well, I really DO need to attempt to get some work done, so will be prying myself from the cam and the blog for a while. Oh, as Jim mentioned, we have had one heck of a series of thunderstorms come through our area since last night--seems appropriate somehow. OK--MUST tear myself away for a while. I WILL be here in spirit, though. BBL...

Temp went from 66 to 73 wow, I need to get ready and do some running around. I'll check back

Genie said...

I don't have sound right now...was there any threat from Belle (perhaps up above-was not in view) that caused intruder to back off and leave?
I saw her looking up as though Belle might be up there.

floralgirl said...

Yeah, don't say beach:)

bev. said...

I am baffled here.

I wish I was on the ground so we knew who was around. Today would have been a good day to go.

some on Hancock think this intruder is a male because of his thinner head.

I think we are not seeing it as close as yesterday so it is hard to tell

Belle flew out at 3 and that Hussy or whatever came back and the poof.

I do not know these eagles like those of you but we know Belle has that mark and we know the dark head. It is Lib I do not know how to ID unless together.

Man, I am sick.

bev. said...

O.K. so eagle back
this is Belle right.

Genie said...

Laughing with Sharon and Dana (Wvagirl)...they reminded me of cute Blake Shelton song..."Sum Beach". I'm sure he would allow us to borrow that phrase.

If intruder was a male it would all make sense to me.

Belle would not do an all out attack ,just want to be rid of me becasue of her bond with Liberty.

You guys know them???

this is shot I jsut took. do not knwo if it shows up

I just want to say that I admire you long-time watchers and bloggers. I really don't know how you find the time to be so dedicated, but I'm glad that you do. Many of you watch multiple cams and at least read several blogs . . .

I guess I was really wrong thinking that one!

An eagle at fledge will be the biggest they ever will be . They loos their size, becasue of feathers etc, as they get older.
by age 5 they are the size at which they will stay.

Now I wish the cam was zoomed so we could get a good look.

Looks like Belles beak ,right

Everything would make sense if it was.

But I still say female.

Eagle-Eyed Shar said...

Mema Jo, you've got mail.

Eagle-Eyed Shar said...

This is for sure Belle.

Lynne2 said...

yeah bev, actually, Megan posted on the last post too. Paula thinks Belle, but she will be doing some comparison.

NatureNut said...

Holy Moley! I have been reading for 2 hours! Have some of old thread to finish & all of this one!
I guess it's safe to see nest now.

Scott's pictures are wonderful & I must see John's

Lynne, saw the positive Aberdeen eagle story! Thx ☺ At first when I saw MD eagle released, I thought of one found near Park, but didn't think so. I will face that possible dilemma tomorrow.XXXing my fingers that both adults there & if not, chicks are old enough to leave alone for fishong (& no one snatches them). Will have to see about policy in aiding---fish drop!

bev. said...

Yup, Belle

come on and eat your fish Belle . You need your strength.

I am off again to do some work LOL

Not getting much done, and that is why I was trying to stay away from the cams.

I was really chickling to myself when Trudy was in nest and we are all shouting for Belle to come and take her out.

would we not all be grand at a fight. LOL

hedgie said...

Pammie, most of us who spend sop much time here are retired! So no job duties. But yeah, housekeeping duties sure suffer!!!! And it's hard to find time to cook, too---or vook as Lolly said! (I THINK it was Lolly!)

bev. said...

Belle is really following something now, but I hear nothing and she is not calling.

hedgie said...

I did remove myself for awhile. Went outside and got some fresh air. Sun came out and it's now 73°...not bad for the first full day of spring. Looks like I have lost one forsythia bush. My lilac has survived...now to see if it blooms!
Jonquils and hyacinths are coming up, and snowdrops are blooming--better late than never! So life DOES go on....and we all appreciate the lifts that nature give us to temper the lows.

floralgirl said...

I'm just guessing like everybody else, haven't has a chance to closely examine the pictures. But at first glance it looked like belle to me. If the eagle was a male I would think liberty would go at it, he hasn't abandoned the nest, in fact he was sitting close by it for a little bit yesterday. This is confusing.

bev. said...

Some of us , my way are going to need a few sips of something LOL to get on board with the beauties of nature.

Snow and cold still

Now I am goneLOl

stronghunter said...

Bev., was wondering why the Hancock people think the intruder is a male? The size would indicate that it is a female, and I have thought that it wants the nest and Liberty.

Unknown said...

I had to step out for a bit, so I'm sorry if this has already been covered ... is there a particular reason Belle would not eat the fish still in the nest?

PA Nana said...

Afternoon everyone. I just got caught up - mostly - and I can't stay away from the live cam.

Fortunately, the cam is now running over 50 minutes. I missed the two on the nest because I had to reboot and then listen to that d... commercial.

I understand the financial needs to post these commercials, but don't they know what's going on here? If anyone of OC or NTCT is looking, thank you. I DO appreciate what you've given us.
Now, got that out of the way.

Please include me with a cheat sheet; pretty please. I've gotten to know most of you since I joined in 2009 and from the nest visit in june, but with the latest collection of newbies I'm totally lost!

I'll post this now and continue to watch as I can; it's getting closer to dinner time. I need a good vook!

Before I go, here's a quote from today's newspaper:

"Although it's difficult today to see beyond the sorrow, may looking back in memory help comfort you tomorrow." Author Unknown

Mema Jo said...

Not yet Sharon But I'll keep watching

wvgal_dana said...

Steve said: In addition, our land manager has been communicating with another raptor biologist based in our Chesapeake Bay field office. There is general agreement among our biologists that if the new female eagle is successful in chasing off the current female, the new female will then need to recruit a male to join her. So I don't know why the other forum said it was a male there for awhile or anyone for that matter.

paula eagleholic said...

Hey Sharon, I can ask Dr Sharpe about the battles...M/M or F/F or M/F.

Also, wanted to ask him about the feeding from the nares and the video of it and the information KB found.

stronghunter said...

I think it is interesting that the biologists think that the intruder is after the nest and will need to find a new male to join her. That sounds as if they expect that Belle and Lib will leave together and the intruder would take over the nest with a new mate.

NatureNut said...

Tried to read some of Hancock, but there are too many pages. I think, according to our observations, that some of their remarks are not accurate. I think it's been Belle in the nest today & Trudy w/her size has to be a female!

Liz said...

Poor Belle, she doesn't know what to do except guard the nest.

stronghunter said...

I wonder how often nests are stolen from other eagles.

Lynne2 said...

Shirley and Dana...they are talking about the eagle that flew in after Trudy was there. They think it was Lib. Did you get the link from before the split...there are pix there of the visit/bird in question, and all we can tell for sure is that it's not Trudy.

stronghunter said...

Haven't watched much today, Lynne. I did not see an eagle fly in after Trudy.

Did not see Trudy today, either.

Lynne2 said...

Probably happens a lot Shirley, like they said...the population has really recovered meaning more competition for habitat.

I am not really clear about that statement either. I wondered and posted yesterday about it Belle gets run off, and is not badly wounded, would Lib leave with her, or would he stay and think about moving in with the Hussy? I can't find any info on that

wvgal_dana said...

I went to different pages in there before and after. There was a time in there they though the intruder was a male Lynne2.

floralgirl said...

Dana, they are just trying to figure it all out like we are. After watching from the ground, I believe the intruder is a female.

Lynne2 said...

Shirley, here is the link that Megan had on....the pics are here.

LIB??? Hancock forum pictures

wvgal_dana said...

Keep thing posted I need to go lay down and see if I can't get rid of this headache. ty

Lynne2 said...

OK, well I am just referring to the pictures on the forum from today. On the link. Not talking about any other speculation.

I won't even pretend to know if it is Lib or Belle, now that cam is zoomed out and withoug both in the nest I suck at ID!

movin said...

Challenges are always M/M or F/F, and following the examples of nests I'm watching, if the challenger is successful, the remaining member of the pair will mate with the winner. Pairs do not leave a good territory together, or in this case Liberty would probably mate with the winner of the challenge, whichever one of them is will be.

But I think Belle will be successful in her defense this time, and we will see Liberty-Belle for a long while yet.

C(°Ù¿°)D Jim

Mema Jo said...

Jim That's what we are praying will happen. Thanks for the info

IrisF said...

Lynne2
A point they didn't make was that whoever flew into the nest after the "intruder",stayed...no other eagle came in. Or if they did I must have blinked. It sure looked like Belle to me - I know I don't post often (in the last couple of years), but I do watch/read.

floralgirl said...

I'm with Jim on that one. My money's on Belle. She just isn't going to give up her territory and nest without a major fight.

Lynne2 said...

I hope you are right Jim! This young little snit has no idea who she is dealing with!

Red said...

I think it was Lib who buried the egg and Patty. Belle was there when he cam in and did not try to run him off. Then she left and Lib buried the egg and Patty. That was my observation.

Lynne2 said...

that's right Iris, no other eagle cam in at that time. And it doesn't matter if you don't post often! You are observing and please don't feel like you can't comment on what you see! Better yet, hang around more!

movin said...

I think the Hancock forum just got it wrong this time. I haven't seen Liberty on the nest since the 16th.

C(°Ù¿°)D Jim

Mema Jo said...

Sharon thanks for that info -

stronghunter said...

Thank you, Lynne. I had gone to Hancock site via the other link, but for some reason I did not see all of the pictures.

Lynne2 said...

I don't remember him being there since the 15th. In the morning. I could be wrong, but I don't remember him being in on Wed, day before hatch....of course, I am not here all the time either!

PammySue said...

I wish the sound on the live feed worked in reverse. I'll bet that homewrecking hussy would leave if she could hear all of us screaming at her.

Eagle-Eyed Shar said...

I have all the faith in the world that Lib and Belle will continue.

bev. said...

Stronghunter,

The people at Hancock were basing this on the narrowness of the head.

I still think it is female , but if it was a male that would explain why Belle has not royally kicked her butt.

Still thinking intruder is female though

Red said...

There was two adult eagles in the nest this morning and one was not Trudy and they were not fighting. Belle flew off and the remaining one (I belive Lib) buried the egg and Patty.

NatureNut said...

Think it would be a great idea, Paula, for you to ask Dr. Sharpe about our new knowledge from Kickingbird & others.
My daughter & I talked yesterday & we thought if the saline solution from nares is secreted on food for chicks, it might be an aid in digestion, as saline might help break down the food.
Other than that, I'm xxxing everything for Sherry, as she goes to Haiti TU! Another colleague (male) going, too & hotel is in a compound & personal driver will cart them around & to lab where they'll work. People down there say things are OK!!!b Except one of their gov't. people just got shot!

paula eagleholic said...

Checked the video of the eagle on the nest at 1:40....NOT Lib in my opinion. Can see the mark on the beak....and the size.

paula eagleholic said...

I have no doubt the intruder is a female.

Robyn said...

It is nice to know it has been calm since I have been gone, still a lot of posts

bev. said...

Well, time will tell.

I really think that Belle realizes all is lost for this season as far as kidlets go.
So to immediately go running back to the nest serves no purpose. But she will not let the harlot stay there either. If the harlot gets too comfy, then it will all break loose.

If the harlot wanted the nest she would have taken Belle at her weakest, and did not.

So we will see what happens. I am praying constantly

Lynne2 said...

went to GROSSery store earlier. Saw 2 F150 Ford pickups. Rage overtook me....anyone remember the scene in Smokey and the Bandit where Jerry Reed runs over a bunch of motorcycles? ;)

Robyn said...

After reading some of the posts and the one from Hancock, I may be wrong but is it possible it was Lib? If he was near the tree he would not have attacked Trudy but if Belle was there would she? I can't see Belle letting her stay in the nest that long AND unattended...

bev. said...

I think what has a lot more confused today is the camera not being in close.

Belle has her head bowed for a bit

when I looked at Scotts pictures I felt the intruder was a female.

cams can distort things,

What is good is that so many are watching and praying for a positive outcome.

NatureNut said...

I'm just thinking here, probably don't know what I'm talking about, but could this be an offspring of Belles? It seems that Belle is really not being very agressive with this bird and this bird is acting like she's familiar with this nest. It's almost like they're taking turns.....

Belle back- Trudy must be right behind her- cam shook.

UGH! I need to head out to store but don't want to leave yet.

To recap the last several minutes. I saw Belle dig 2 holes and push twigs over new grave. Belle left nest and then Trudy came into nest, landing right on the grave, she then poked at the grave as is to dig it up again, but she didn't. Then Trudy took her left foot and pressed on the grave like 3 times. Then Trudy stepped back. You could her Belle in the uppper tree. Then Trudy left. I can't tell who is in the nest now.

Lib was on nest this afternoon at round 3:30 or so when T left. Then Lib then B came back. Got pics on comport at work. T just took off. Now B is back. No wonder it's so confusing.

Love all the comments today. I've been very amused at this time of sorrow and anticipation of WHATS NEXT???

Maria, we thought of that as well....but the clutch that would be this age failed.

paula eagleholic said...

Couple of more digs...now Belle has the fish again...yea, eat it right in front of her...

this is just truly the most bizarre thing I have ever seen. I have not a clue as to what to make of all of this....

mariadangeloart said...

Oh, it just seems so odd that Belle is not being agressive to the point of doing harm and lets her stay in the nest a bit. Like I said it's like they're taking turns.

Appetite coming back? EAT, honey---get strong!

mariadangeloart said...

Could the age be off by a year? Maybe this bird is a year older or younger than what everyone thinks?

paula eagleholic said...

Lynne, we are not alone! No one on the other forums knows either!

mariadangeloart said...

Lynne2 and Robyn, are you ladies on Facebook by any chance?

hedgie said...

Caro---make that BiDDy.

Lynne2 said...

I guess that's possible Maria....

Paula, I can only say that I hope some biologist who specializes in eagles has found his way to this camera! We are seeing something that is probably unprecedented since cams began, I'm sure!

ohn its DD not TT...LOL

Susan I didn't see Lib ever today or yesterday at the nest

Is that what I missed when I went
to the bus stop????????

signgirl said...

Wouldn't Lib help fight off hussy if it was his and belle's off spring. I thought I read that on one post?

Mema Jo said...

NO, signgirl Lib will just wait & go with the Winner.

Lynne2 said...

I was at the GROSSery store at that time. Oh how I wish it was Lib....

Eagle-Eyed Shar said...

I have been sitting here watching all day and I have not seen Lib.

paula eagleholic said...

Maria, not by the markings....darker white parts at 3...everything all white at 5...this one has more dark in the tail than you can see on the cam...more darkness shows when she flies...and in Scott's pics...at most it could be a 5 yo from the 2006 batch....but I'm not sure parent would recognize chick from 5 years ago....young returning to the nest are chased away.

But we can't be positive as none of the chicks or adults are banded.

You wolf that down Gal!
