Well it has been a good chatting evening with all of you! I think I am going to slow down - play some solitaire and then head in to bed. Take care - oh yes I may go over to FB to see if the Bluefield gals are doing ok... If it is a retreat you think they are allowed their laptops.
Have been chatting on facebook with a cousin in Michigan. She said it was in the high 60's where she is. We are at 51. Hard to believe we are cooler than Michigan.
Goodnight, fine fowl folks. Going to hit the hay and try to get up early so that I can HOPEFULLY get started on the leaves---just maybe I'll beat the breeze that's predicted! Prayers for all.
Wellllll, no early bird visitors this morning so far... Happy Hallowe'en to everyone, hope it is a safe and fun day, no matter what is what on your dance cards. I am very comfortable in my flannel pajamas.

Belle is sitting in the middle of the nest, looking all around for a limb to drop into the nest, so she can place it somewhere that Lib won't bother it:)
Hi EVERYONE in an those coming in. Been along time and a lot of avatars have changed. They are cute. I got to see Belle in the nest this morning. Makes for a GREAT day!!
Hi Andrea I am still trying to catch up with all I have to do now. So it is coming along slow but well. thank you
How are you?
For LOLLY: Lolly I read back about the soccer incident. I think it will only make Joseph feel badly that his father had to do this for him. Also it won't give those Dad's nothing to come back with to Joey. I agree with others for Joey and coach to file complaint and take it to the commission. That way people won't see one of the kids Dad getting upset with these guys. It is like bouncing a ball back and forth. Your Right also that is discrimination against the coaches son and Joseph. File legal complaint.
Sorry SHIRLEY I called you Andrea. Like I said I've been away too long. Hope you are having a good day. Are they having Halloween in your area tonight. They are here I am praying it doesn't rain for the kids. I wasn't going to give out this year afraid I would carry H1N1 or flu back into Ed. Then again I just can't not give and watch them have fun. So my two neighbors on both sides of me we are sitting out to hand out our candies tonight.
HELLO, CEIL, SHIRLEY AND DANA, SO GOOD TO SEE YOU ON HERE THIS MORNING DANA:) Hope you and Ed are both feeling better! Shirley hope you are better too!
When we lived in the Columbus, Ohio, area, they usually had trick-or-treating on the night before Halloween. It was called Beggar's Night. The mayor proclaimed the date, which was almost always Oct. 30. The idea was that they did not want little children out when older kids might be out doing mischief. I don't know how the idea of beggar's night got started. It may not have had anything to do with the politicians. It started before we moved there. We got used to it.
Our neighborhood was always swamped with children because we were the only neighborhood in a rural community, so parents brought their children from miles around.
We had to hire a sheriff's deputy to direct traffic. My husband was president of the civic association and I remember that someone got offended because we had an officer asking people to park on the street and walk through the neighborhood. They thought we were being uppity. We were trying to keep children from being run over by cars. All of the streets ended in dead ends with little turn-arounds, and cars were backing up and turning around with children all around. It was one of those things. We were accused of being uppity when were paying money to keep everyone safe.
Yeah, each year the mayors declared the date, but I don't know what started it all. It was one of the mayor's duties. I kind of thought that parents wanted it that way for the little kids.
People thought that older kids might bother the little ones on Halloween night. Of course, I think what happened was that some of the older ones just took two nights to mess around, but I do not recall it was much of an issue.
Panda cam just keeps saying loading but does not look like it is loading. We have people who drive their kids up the street. Kids get out get the candy and get back into the car.
We have ones who do that, too. But in this neighborhood, they all got to the ends of the streets and had to back up. Darkness, backing cars, and 100s of people milling around, many of them excited children in costumes with masks, seemed like a disaster about to happen. The officer said the only solution was to ask people to park at the entrance to the neighborhood and walk. We accepted the advice.
True, Judie. We will be calling him Diego whether we use the English or Chinese version. I have always liked calling him Diego. It seems so appropriate.
Happy Halloween Morning To All ! It used to be that the clocks had turned the weekend before Trick/Treat. Hope the weather holds - usually starts around 6pm. Good to see you Dana and all my other Eagle Buddies. Hubby went down to Dr and got H1N1 shot this am. Now I pray we are good to go! It is really hitting the children. Get dressed and go get your candy, Shirley.
Hello y'all' I am frustrated with a capital F......the WIND---not a breeze---is working against me. It can't even stay in one direction so that I could work WITH it---definitely variable. More leaves coming down as I TRY to blow---what a joke. Bill says give it up until a calm day. Wonder WHEN that will be? ARGH!!!! Or as Margy says, WOOF!
no we're not......as I have always told hubby....if we did not rake...the leaves still would be gone by spring.....county starts picking ours up next week..we rake them to the street...we have no curbs
Lynn, it sounds like a fruitless effort. The wind will just blow away anything you pile up. Good reason to put the job off until another day.
Jo, you are right. I need to get dressed and buy some candy. I thought about going to Walmart, but I do not think I want to be anywhere near Walmart today. A nearby grocery store will be just fine.
Also need to do some of my homework today. It will be hard to accomplish much this evening. I asked Will if he would be around to help me hand out treats, but he is going to a party. I do have some Halloween pencils, but I am sure that won't do! I might give them along with candy to some of the kids, or I might just take them to school and use them myself.
I remember when I was a child, there was a woman nearby who always made wonderful homemade treats for Halloween. She invited us into her house to a beautiful display of candied apples, popcorn balls, and all kinds of delicious goodies. She must have enjoyed it as much as we did. I would be afraid to do that now.
George and I seem to have established a routine. When I settle into the recliner, he is right with me, purring happily.
Guess I will be without television in the family room for awhile. I can't get it to work, although the old one in my bedroom works fine. It probably means a cable is loose or Will reset something last night to watch a movie, but I do not like to call him at work unless something dire is going on. I can live without television.
I have very few trees in my yard, and the ones I have are babies, but the ones at the edge of the lot are droppping lots of leaves. We are able to get most of them with the mower or with a little raking.
I am looking at the nest and it seems that there are a lot of sticks poking up toward the camera. Is the wind doing that, or are the eagles putting up a barricade in front of the camera? Maybe they are onto us.
hope the deer and the eagles are hiding.....:) NCTC YOUTH HUNT The youth hunt will be brought back again this year and scheduled for both an AM and PM hunt on October 31, 2009. This hunt is antlerless only and an adult must be present per WV regulations
Hi all! Have lasagna ready to go to Laurel's. Leaving in little over an hour.
Had a visitor last night. Sleeping with the windows open and in the middle of the night I heard something crunch on a pecan or least that is what it sounded like. Got up, turned on the light and there was a raccoon. Know they are around but that is the first one we have seen in our yard and we have been here 36 years. We have suspected one was getting into the fish food so now we keep it indoors. Also, on a few occasions we have found a snail cracked open on the rocks around the pond. I immediately though of the PA cam. lol
have fun, Lolly...hubby said "real coach" should tell the team they have to forfeit the game because they did not come to practice.....hope everything turns out OK, and the rouge coaches don't get wind that an official is going to be there today...
For sure, Jo---raccoons are good fishers! And I have found that they will eat ANYTHING they can get their little paws on. They also steal and hide things. When the girls were little, outdoor toys were disappearing...we found them up in a tree; there was even a jump rope that they had left hanging on the swings!
Hey, if my gold fish attract Eagles, well, then will just add more fish. Let them come! Must say that as much as I love having fish, I am not attached to them. ha!
I have to go tidy up my front porch and I think I'll light the candle in my little kitty when the kiddies come. Kathryn and Tom usually bring Hunter over to trick or treat here. Not sure of their plans. I think there was a hayride in the works at some point.
Happy Halloween Everyone!! Have had my big black cat in picture window, got candy & hope the misty rain quits. Oh well. We haven't had many trick or treaters the past few years~~~think they all grew up. When I was younger ☺, we sometimes went out on both Beggar's nite & Halloween. Don't know where that originated. Checked SD voting site~~~didn't vote yet, but will propbably go w/SD name. I was looking for a roly poly name!!
Wind died down enough for me to make a start....and now it's raining!! Figures, right? Feel bad for all the little ones planning on going Trick or Treating....maybe it will stop by evening.
Hi, Hedgie. It depends on the year, the number of kids in the complex and whether there are organized activities for them or not.
Some years ... not very recent ... I've gotten several large groups, accompanied by parents. But other years, I wind up eating a lot of candy myself (tragic) or taking it to work.
Jim, here for 17 yrs. and never a single one! Not many little ones until just recently, and they probably go to more populated developments....my long driveway may be a deterrent, too...plus I don't turn on porch light!
It helps that you like candy, huh, Jim??? I can take it or leave it--for the most part, I leave it!! What kind of work do you do? I thought you were retired!
Jo, sure glad that you and Ed have gotten your H1N1 shots. Paper today says that Health Dept. is targetting schools first for distribution of their supply....gotta admit that I am kind of scared....know that I will die if I get it.
Jim, I only buy a little and then give it to daughters! Figure if I get any goblins and run out, I've always got coins!! Better for the kids than candy anyway!!!
Lynn Lucy is my friend Betty's grandaughter. She will be 6 in January. She goes to Peabody and takes ballet, piano and the harp. Today was piano. All the children were in costumes. Lucy was Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz.
Think I could have done without the pic of the rattler consuming the rat on Catalina!! Does show tho' how the jaw unhinges in order to fit in large critters for any who haven't seen it. Thanks, Jim. Good updates.
Shirley, so far absolutely no vaccine available here apparently for the "public".....they did some pregnant women and children at Health Dept. yesterday, but now say rest of what they get in will go to schools first. Dr. says he won't be getting any. State decides who vaccine is shipped to, and even tho' feds say there WILL be enough, my question is WHEN??? Doesn't help someone after they're dead.
From what I am guessing. they were going to give it to students free, and, I am not sure about teachers, I must have missed a message, but I guess they were going to charge us, then decided not to, but let us have it free. If teachers get it, then students would be at danger. In my homeroom, none of the students turned in a consent form. I was surprised.
i GOT my regular flu shot, and this year they recommended I get a Shingles vaccination, which I did.
I read that the Swine Flu isn't attacking older people much and that we wouldn't be getting the vaccine (on Yahoo). But I decided to ask my doctor anyway, and they said I would be eligible when they get their shipment of vaccine in. Maybe I'm eligible because of the heart background, don't know.
I'm not too worried anyway...for myself... I figure I've been exposed over the years, and if I'm not mistaken, I got the Swine Flu shot in '76, when Ford ordered it to be given to everyone for free.
No, Shirley, he doesn't think I qualify.......duh....just goes along with his whole attitude....just because I have a terminal illness (only need 6 months to be considered in remissions!), he acts like nothing else matters.
Happy Halloween everyone! It's another dreary (and windy) day here in southcentral PA. My skeleton tells me rain is coming. I hurt in so many places it's hard to know where it doesn't hurt.
I also voted for our little guy. I know they said one per family but don't they stop duplicates? I had no trouble getting in to vote but stopped after three. I just couldn't stop. ;-)
Going to have a hot cup of Irish Breakfast Tea, BBL
Very interesting article, Shirley. And for sure right in your backyard!! Considering the number of eagles that have been sighted in VA, sure that they probably do nest somewhere within the refuge area!!
Dustin is with us this weekend and can't get the grass mowed for running in to the shop when he sees a pretty girl enter! It rained and he probably won't get it done now:(
Ceil, love piano recitals (except when I was in them!)! Lucy sounds like one talented little girl! Hope that it is nurtured and not forced on her! If she truly loves it and is dedicated, she will have a lifetime of enjoyment and satisfaction.
Hi, Wanda! Has your day been super busy?? Hope so!! Know that you are looking forward to the end of your season...sure hope it has been a proftable one.
So far Lynn She loves ballet and the piano. Not so much the harp. When I go into the house I say I see the harp is still here. Her dad said the teacher feels she would be good. Dad says giving it a little while before harp goes.LOL

Thanks, Jo!
When I can get there, I'll vote!
On the San Diego Blog, someone said something about being able to vote. The Zoo responded on the blog, "it is up, go ahead and vote." Or something to that effect!
Mine still just says loading....will try later this weekend or at work on Monday. They said only one vote per family...
I agree, Lolly. I was wondering if they could come up with something referring to Diego. Glad to see they did. I voted for Fu Sheng too.
Nope, can't get it thru' Jo's link iether---it's not the page itself that won't load, it's the names....
I like Fu Sheng, too!!!
Yea! I just love the name Fu Sheng! I loved calling him Diego, so this is just perfect! Hope folks agree.
I clicked right on through Jo's link. I have a feeling that they are getting overloaded.
I have voted - when I go back to that page it just says Thank You and gives me the number of total votes submitted.
One vote - but I could go in on hubby's pc and bet I could vote again under his sign on.....
We haven't heard from crunch (Bob)
Wasn't he loading Windows 7 the other day?
Bob Quinn also was loading Windows 7.
I thought one of them would get back to us and let us know how the program is..... not that I am ready to try it.

No, I have tomorrow off, Jo!
No, Jo. Our retreat is two weeks away. I'll be letting you know when I go.
Have been chatting on facebook with a cousin in Michigan. She said it was in the high 60's where she is. We are at 51. Hard to believe we are cooler than Michigan.
Ok, Deb. What name did you vote for?
I went for Diego!
Sounds like Sharon and Beverly and Thelma are going very well at the retreat and really enjoying meeting up with all their friends.
My brother from Fort Collins says they have lots of snow there.
DEB I hope the sun shines on you and that you have a fun filled day doing what you do best - NO not the laundry!
Go out and get some new pics for us!
Yea, Deb!!!! LOL Would still like you if you had voted differently.

I'm fine, and so is he, will see them tomorrow morning, before we go to the game:)
It is so exciting to have a little one in the family.

Judie, you should get a prize for picking that name:), Diego
I agree. Prize for Judie!

I remember we used to call the BW eagle Loney Louie! But I really think it is the nesting couple who come down to the platform.

Lynn gripe if you want No problem. We have no trees on our street and still have to pick up leaves. Don't mind.
Oh I am waiting for my ride.
Maybe they are onto us.
hope the deer and the eagles are hiding.....:)
NCTC
YOUTH HUNT
The youth hunt will be brought back again this year and scheduled for both an AM and PM hunt on October 31, 2009. This hunt is antlerless only and an adult must be present per WV regulations
Yeah, me too, Mits.
and the antelope too:)
How many antelope might one find at NCTC?
ah...tee-hee...don't think any in them there parts....just reminded me of the song.
I expect if one showed up there, people might be upset if it got show.
shot.
Happy Halloween! May many little goblins haunt you tonight! Be prepared! Some are mighty scary while others are oh so cute!
I immediately though of the PA cam. lol
I wonder if Black Water has already had their Deer Hunt.
No buffalo, either, unless they are on a farm.
Was it as fat as the PA raccoons?
Lolly If you have fish in your pond - watch out! Don't know which causes the most concern Raccoons or Armadillos.
have fun, Lolly...hubby said "real coach" should tell the team they have to forfeit the game because they did not come to practice.....hope everything turns out OK, and the rouge coaches don't get wind that an official is going to be there today...
No, he was not fat. I thought he was rather scraggly looking. But did not get a really good look as he scampered out of sight.
yikes, no buffalo roaming around either...
There are a lot of sticks in our nest that need placing!
Lunch time here! BBL
groundhog...up at PIX, sitting on its hind legs...cute
We had most of our fish disappear one time, but we think a heron got them. While gone on one of our trips this summer we lost one fish.
We had nine, down to eight. The are BIG gold fish. Can not have Koi as they eat and disturb plants.
It should be interesting today. lol The coach is disorganized and non confrontational, so do not think he will do that, Mits.
I think our eagles are building a barricade so we can't watch them when they start billing and cooing.
For sure, Jo---raccoons are good fishers! And I have found that they will eat ANYTHING they can get their little paws on. They also steal and hide things. When the girls were little, outdoor toys were disappearing...we found them up in a tree; there was even a jump rope that they had left hanging on the swings!
Ceil....still waiting?? Who is Lucy and what kind of recital is she having??
The soccer mess isn't the fault of the kids. It is the parents who are at fault. The kids did not plan that stuff.
It is a shame when children get caught up in a mess made by adults.
For sure, Shirley!!
Eagles might like your fish, Lolly.
The kids just want to play.
Hey, if my gold fish attract Eagles, well, then will just add more fish. Let them come! Must say that as much as I love having fish, I am not attached to them. ha!
Yeah, that would be fun, Lolly. I would put out some eagle bait if I thought it would work.
I asked Jack if he counted the fish this morning. No, he has not. Better go check!
Oh, BTW, thanks for bearing with me, gang!
We love you, Lynn.
Yes, if there was any way to attract an eagle to my property, I would do it for sure! Lolly, glad that you don't name and pet your fish!!
I do have trees fit for an eagle nest along the back, but there are too many people and barking dogs to suit an eagle. Not too far to a river, though.
Lolly, we will be interested in what happens at the soccer game today.
Noticed that we didn't hear from Norma this morning....she must be in a funk since her 'Eers lost their game...sorry, Norma.
Norma was so gracious when her team beat mine.
She said she couldn't celebrate because it was my school they beat.
I have to go tidy up my front porch and I think I'll light the candle in my little kitty when the kiddies come. Kathryn and Tom usually bring Hunter over to trick or treat here. Not sure of their plans. I think there was a hayride in the works at some point.
BBL.
Mei Xiang is enjoying a treat....

Hello, Jim. How are you today?
Will see you later Jim. Must get busy here.
Wind died down enough for me to make a start....and now it's raining!! Figures, right? Feel bad for all the little ones planning on going Trick or Treating....maybe it will stop by evening.
Hi, Jim! Do you get the candy-seekers in your building?
Thank goodness---names finally loaded and I got to vote for Fu Sheng (he'll always be Diego to me!).
Northern Island Reports
New report from Santa Rosa Island, and right below that are the Catalina Reports for the last couple of weeks.

Hi, Hedgie. It depends on the year, the number of kids in the complex and whether there are organized activities for them or not.
Some years ... not very recent ... I've gotten several large groups, accompanied by parents. But other years, I wind up eating a lot of candy myself (tragic) or taking it to work.
How about you??
C(°ٿ°)D
Jim
Jim, here for 17 yrs. and never a single one! Not many little ones until just recently, and they probably go to more populated developments....my long driveway may be a deterrent, too...plus I don't turn on porch light!
It helps that you like candy, huh, Jim??? I can take it or leave it--for the most part, I leave it!! What kind of work do you do? I thought you were retired!
Wow, it sounds very inviting. I wonder why they don't come....
So, what do you do with all the Halloween candy??
C(°ٿ°)D
Jim
Jo, sure glad that you and Ed have gotten your H1N1 shots. Paper today says that Health Dept. is targetting schools first for distribution of their supply....gotta admit that I am kind of scared....know that I will die if I get it.
Jim, I only buy a little and then give it to daughters! Figure if I get any goblins and run out, I've always got coins!! Better for the kids than candy anyway!!!
Lynn, can't you get the shot?
Lynn Lucy is my friend Betty's grandaughter.
She will be 6 in January. She goes to Peabody and takes ballet, piano and the harp. Today was piano. All the children were in costumes. Lucy was Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz.
I did not know if I would be able to get one, either. I still won't know until it happens, but I guess they are going to give them to us.
Jim don't forget to vote for the PANDA Name.
I always buy candy I like incase it is left over. Or I take it to the women's shelter.
jUST saw an eagle in our nest, but he flew the scene before I could comment here.
Jim
Diego is sleeping away. So cute.

Jim
So your doctor is getting the vaccine?
I am quite sure I had H2N2 in 1957. Maybe that makes me immune. Who knows?
yes Jim, you did get it in "76, so did I...even though there were deaths from some of those shots
Wildlife Preserve in VA
Just came across this interesting article about a mostly unknown wildlife preserve practically in my backyard.
Can't your doctor help you get the shot, Lynn?
bet there are some eagles there.
It says they like that type of area, but did not say there were any, but I was thinking the same thing. It is the perfect spot for eagles.
i did vote for Diego's new name, just as Ceil suggested. Too bad they didn't have one with the initials "SD". I think I would have voted for that one.
Boy, none of them sound right in English, or is it the other way around?? None of the translations sound right for "Diego."

Jim
No, Shirley, he doesn't think I qualify.......duh....just goes along with his whole attitude....just because I have a terminal illness (only need 6 months to be considered in remissions!), he acts like nothing else matters.
Ah-ha, Jim----you worked for the competition!!!
Maybe you need a new doc.
Will be back in awhile. Need to run the errands.
I couldn't get in more than once. You must have the magic touch.
Okay, now SD is stopping me from voting again. Don't know how it happened that I got 3 votes in, but the devil made me do it!!
Very interesting article, Shirley. And for sure right in your backyard!! Considering the number of eagles that have been sighted in VA, sure that they probably do nest somewhere within the refuge area!!
GOOD AFTERNOON EVERYONE
I think this is going to be a split.
Diann, were you using different computers? Lucky that you got to "stuff the ballot box" so to speak! LOL. Sorry you are aching so badly. :(
Nope, no split.
Dustin is with us this weekend and can't get the grass mowed for running in to the shop when he sees a pretty girl enter! It rained and he probably won't get it done now:(
Just voted for Diego. He sure is wiggly!
Wonder if Sissy and all the gang are going to be pandas for Halloween??? I would if I were going anywhere ☺
Now we are going to split. Which I am going to do. We are going to Mass It is drizzly here so maybe not many kids.
I had to do it. SPLIT
