when we went to dinner the other night, across the street from where I live, we discovered an osprey nest, been seeing them all summer, did not know I had one in walking distance from the condo, an the osprey were in it still
I would love to find an osprey nest. I do remember seeing eagle nests along the river, but I do not know that I could really distinguish which is which, unless I saw the birds.
Changing the subject a bit--I am wondering about goldfinches. Yesterday, I noticed one feeding another. I thought it was a male and a female, and wondered if it is too late for courtship behavior among goldfinches. Maybe it was an adult and a young one. They were sitting on the bag of seeds I had put out for them.
Others were sitting around and there was a lot of fluttering going on.
the osprey nests I see are usually on man-made paltforms...then the osprey supply the nesting materials, and can be very colorful, we watched one up in Conn, that had brought a blue teddy bear into the nest.
Morning all. Deb Fantastic article and pics. Shirley it was great to sit there and watch the osprey at dinner the other night. Forgot to tell about the great ice cream we had down the ocean. I had caramel chocolate and gained 2 pounds. Margy and Megan the moon was gorgeous on the ocean and Venus in the early morning was spectacular. BBL Just got a phone call from an elderly neighbor who needs something done.
Awww, I remember the blue teddy bear and we called the baby Baby Smurf. He loved to stand on it. I saw it when the hurricane blew it out! The bear that is, not Baby Smurf! Baby Smurf had already fledged.
Need to organize my house for the pm picnic. For breathing I have had AC on during the evening and for sleeping.. Seems to work. Can't resist during the day to open up all doors & windows for the fresh air! So far this weather has spoiled me -
He will do all of the cooking and setting up for the actual picnic. I just want to get the house taken care of. It's an incentive to do what needs to be done anyway.
I think the bald eagle's nest at Delta also had a teddy bear at one time... I haven't looked yet for any photos.. It was not blue - just a brown teddy bear.
May 2009 Article says: If you recall last year, this is the famous "Teddy-bear" nest. The adults brought a teddy bear into the nest thinking it was something good for the eaglets. Who knows what they'll bring in this year.
Jo I remember that. They thought it was food at first. Thank heaven they did not feed it to the youngsters. Neighbor just needed me to pick up her bills. She is having stomach trouble again and said she is going to the hospital. They cannot find anything wrong. She has a daughter and grown grandchildren but they do not help much.
Good beautiful Sunday morning all y'all! Wow, Deb, excellent article and pics are great----especially seeing you in some!!! So cool to read so much neat info on the project. Really had to laugh about the male juvie and the gar catch!!! Still catching up on comments.
Hope you picnickers have fun!!! Lovely day for it...just don't knock yourselves out getting ready! Must have missed the Eagle Express....didn't hear a honk at 12!!!
BIOLOGY LESSON FOR THE DAY: Wonderful article about the Monarch butterflies in our paper this morning...they migrate to Mexico. The eastern monarchs cover 1800 miles in 4 months at a "leisurely pace" of 5-18 mph!! They return to the same area, sometimes the same trees, year after year----let's say the descendants do: each butterfly only makes the journey once; they leave the wintering grounds in late Feb/early Mar, laying eggs on their way north, and then die. Several generations separate those that return in the spring from the ones that head south in the fall. While wintering, they are sluggish and inactive, storing energy for the trip north. Mating occurs before they leave. The migration, which goes as far north as Canada, follows the appearance of milkweed from south to north. They incorporate the milkweed toxins into their systems, making them poisonous to prey---a blue jay will vomit within minutes of eating a monarch.
Lynn wish I could do more but with her family living so close to her I don't want to step in. Her daughter brings her meals to her but she does not like some of them.
Happy Sunday Everyone!!! Deb, the osprey article and pics are wonderful. How exciting!! Glad to hear Helen has a nest to watch in the future!! Gotta work on reunion bulletin boards while oldest kitty is asleep!!!She loves to help!
Will's guests have started arriving, so I have retreated upstairs. Sometimes, I go down and join them, but think I might just take a nap this afternoon.
George does not consider weekends as a time for me to sleep in. He thinks I should be up sixish, regardless. I manage to get him to adjust somewhat in the summer, but when I go back to school in the fall, he goes back to his early schedule.
It is hard to sleep with a cold, wet cat nose pressed against your face every few minutes. Then there is the loud purring. Meowing comes if I do not respond. I got up early this morning. Now I am sleepy.
Good afternoon, everyone. Seems the faster I go the furtherer behind I get.
Just checked Diego. Sleeping with Mom.
Lolly, front end loader is amazing. Jack has a wondrous talent. Just wish my front end looked as good!
Quiet day so far. Working on material for the graduate students to use to grade critical thinking assignments for me. The most difficult is preparing guidelines for the crime class as grad students don't have any experience with the material.
Lovely sunshine as I look through the window. Maybe bbq pork chops tonight to use the last two and a salad?
Shirley, I don't know how late in the summer goldfinches have babies to feed but I was surprised to see a daddy cardinal feeding a baby three days ago. Sure seems possible since wrens also are still having babies. Haven't seen the hummers for about two days -- maybe gone for the winter.
Okay, back to check Diego and then on to more school work.
Good afternoon! Hope from church and expecting Laurel and the boys in little over an hour. Joey is not coming, said he had to work. I told him he better not be watching football!
Lynn, congratulation on the fledging of your wren. Now you will not get cussed out anymore by mom wren.
Mits, how exciting to have a osprey nest so close. Something to watch next year for sure. When we discovered a hawk nest in our front yard, it was already built. Never once was aware of them building the nest.
Have stuck a bow on the front end loader. It is ready for a little boy!
Well, my back is better, but now it's a couple of hours later... [:~D]
I wanted to say "thanks for the great link and the great pictures, Deb." I really appreciate them, and they give us a much better, more detailed look at the good work you have been telling us about. Thanks to you and to people like you for volunteering for such projects.
Yep, Judie, I don't like being chastised in that language and tone of voice!!! Glad the birds are ready to depart!! I haven't seen any hummers in a couple of weeks. Mits, really neat that you have an osprey nest close to the condo! Too bad you didn't know about it earlier in the season! Jim, what did you do to your back???? Glad that it's feeling better.
Hedgie, I don't think it's anything very dramatic.
It's too much time in front of the computer ... isn't there always something wrong with whatever you're doing?? Especially if you are liking it?? Plus, in the time I'm spending here, I'm not getting much exercise, which might make my back and the rest of me feel some better.
Well I walked away and got involved in a project that was low to the floor. Know what you mean Jim. Went to get up was stiff and almost fell face first back onto the floor. Would have smashed my face really good. Judie I have a back loader with my front loader.
Emails have been sent to Momster mail address as well as to your private addresses if I have them, requesting attendance information for NCTC Open House Sat., Oct. 17th. If you have not received your email, here is the text: Dear Momsters and Dadsters,
Mema Jo has asked me to handle headcounts for NCTC Open House Saturday, Oct. 17th. We will be eating lunch at NCTC in the beautiful cafeteria, and then will be having dinner around 5pm. It will probably be in a private dining room at The Clarion in Shepherdstown; we will let you know the details soon. Many of us also gather for a Friday evening dinner at The Clarion.
Please email me ASAP if you plan to attend Open House and if:
*you will be joining us for Friday evening dinner
*you will be joining us for dinner Saturday evening
*you would be interested in a trip to Romney for a ride on the Eagle train on Sunday
Not only do we need headcounts for the restaurants, but it will also help us plan for other things (like snacks and drinks) on Sat., and, of course, reservations are required for the Eagle train.
We will send you all information and details as soon as we have them!!!! Thanks. Lynn aka Hedgie
Whoever chats w/ Norma first in the moring, please direct her to this post, as she doesn't have any email access!!
Ohhhh, now I am sad. Really sad! I WANT to be there Fri, Sat, and Sat nite, and I WANT to ride the train on Sunday. But, this year it is only wishes and wants.
To those of you who have not gone before.....DO SO!!!!! You will love the great time you have with these GREAT momsters and dadsters. And, you just might meet Lib and Belle in person!!! (or should that be in Eagle!) Anyway, it is a very special weekend with some very special folks.
Yes, I will be glad when this years open house is over. Then I can start counting the days until next year. We plan on going to New England in Sept. and then on the way home....Open House 2010!!
Lolly, don't feel bad. I've been standing at the end of my driveway since 11:55am and it's now 4:15pm. I sure am getting hungry for a hot dog! Do ya think Wanda went to Jo's and ate up all the hot dogs?
Checked quickly and Belle and Lib were both in the nest. Couldn't get to the blog fast enough - poof.
OH BOY DO I NEED TO APOLOGISE TO ALL OF YOU! I went to church this morning and thought Capt. Gene was going to pick you all up in the Eagle Express. Said he would as soon as the swelling went down in his foot...but that didn't happen. Just can't leave him alone! I went to GeeGee's after church then went grocery shopping. I NEVER do the shopping. It is Gene's pleasure to do that. He has been indisposed for a while now and we're running out of everything, so I had no choice. I don't know how long he is going to be off his feet, so I thought I'd better stock up while I was in the store. Good Lord...I thought my pocketbook was going to explode when my bill was tallied up!:) He does much better than I! I promise to have all of you here one day for hambugers and hot dogs!!

Deb, that is a WONDERFUL article, and great pics.....
Deb, I can see why you were so excited about the osprey story. It is wonderful.
when we went to dinner the other night, across the street from where I live, we discovered an osprey nest, been seeing them all summer, did not know I had one in walking distance from the condo, an the osprey were in it still
That is cool, Helen, now next summer you can keep an eye on the activities!
The reporter was a very nice person and had watched Osprey when he was growing up in CA..
I just looked at all of the pictures, Deb. They give me a better perspective on what you're doing out there. Cool.
Can you get a picture of the osprey nest for us, Helen?
I don't have a decent camera down here, Shirley...just one of the disposables, I think, not sure I know where it is?
You'll just have to give us descriptions, then. It is fun to make such a find, isn't it?
it sure was a great find, Shirley...although a little late in the season, I have never seen that nest before, it might have been put there recently.
I would love to find an osprey nest. I do remember seeing eagle nests along the river, but I do not know that I could really distinguish which is which, unless I saw the birds.

BBL Just got a phone call from an elderly neighbor who needs something done.
I have been having lots of visits from a male and female goldfinch. Maybe they brought all the kids this time.
ah Ceil and Margy, our senior citizen caretakers:)
Awww, I remember the blue teddy bear and we called the baby Baby Smurf. He loved to stand on it. I saw it when the hurricane blew it out! The bear that is, not Baby Smurf! Baby Smurf had already fledged.
So even baby birds love teddy bears. How sweet.
Going to tackle a few chores around here. BBL.
hey Miss Sharon, how's it going?
Went Googling for the blue teddy bear. There are lots of links for one in 2006. Is this it?
Blue Teddy Bear
You might conclude that I have not yet gotten to the chores . . .
Really have to go now. BBL.
That is the right one. Beautiful blue bear.
Very blue!
yep, Shirley, you got it
I guess they never found it after the hurricane.
Good Sunday Morning All! Hi Sharon, Mits, Ceil, Deb and Shirley.
When needing a caregiver I know whom to call!
Finished reading article & viewing pics, Deb! Fantastically written article & WOW! the pics now give me a clearer pic of your activities.

Hi Jo.
Will has friends coming over for an afternoon picnic. I had thought it would be in the evening. Must get organized.
He will do all of the cooking and setting up for the actual picnic. I just want to get the house taken care of. It's an incentive to do what needs to be done anyway.
Yes Shirley I know what you mean about needing incentives at times! lol
Being retired I sometimes need an incentive to get out of bed in the morning! At least it helps to have something planned for the day.
I think the bald eagle's nest at Delta also had a teddy bear at one time...
I haven't looked yet for any photos..
It was not blue - just a brown teddy bear.
Just changed my avatar!

Yes Jo, that would be Baby Andrew!

Let Paula Know Your Brand!
I hope Will saves some food for Shirley when she gets up from her nap!
My crew should be walking in the door any minute now!
Wanda, was supposed to pick us up to go to your house today, Jo. I stood out at the end of my drive, like she told me to, but she never showed up.
Hey everyone... I just popped on to look at the camera and there was an Eagle there!!!
It just left though... Are Lib and Belle back to frequenting the nest?
Yes, I will be glad when this years open house is over. Then I can start counting the days until next year. We plan on going to New England in Sept. and then on the way home....Open House 2010!!
Yes, Tammy. Lib and Belle have been seen at the nest several times recently. Usually it is in the morning or in the evening.
Thanks Lolly... It is so nice to see one of them.
No Hidey sightings?
Laurel and boys should arrive soon. Going to leave!
BBL
No, Hidey has not been seen for some time now. He has moved on!
Lolly, don't feel bad. I've been standing at the end of my driveway since 11:55am and it's now 4:15pm. I sure am getting hungry for a hot dog! Do ya think Wanda went to Jo's and ate up all the hot dogs?

Judie
Good afternoon all.
Woke up from my nap and found a hamburger in the refridgerator, so I ate it. Will does a good job of grilling.
Wonder where the squirrel that was visiting the nest went? Wouldn't think that squirrels would do very well in the nest vicinity.
Shirley they don't but they do hang around the nest. Sometimes they get caught.
My live cam is black with the green pole going back and forth
Mine too, Ceil. The still cam is going off and on.
