Hunter went to the Potter movie on Saturday with his mom and a friend of hers from work. Kathryn was a little worried that it might be too scary for him, but she let him make the call, and he decided to go. If he had decided not to, I was on stand-by to keep him so Kathryn could go.
Will had to work on Saturday, so he and I went on Sunday night. Kathryn and Will have read all of the books. I have not, so they explain some of the plot, etc., to me.
I enjoyed it, but just enjoy being with my children at almost anything.
I posted a pictue of some mystery birds on my blog. It's one I took back in the 1980s. Maybe someone can help me identify them.
I am having problems getting my scanner to talk to my computer, so I took a photograph of the photograph, which means the quality isn't too wonderful.
Watching the NY chimney swifts and just learned this......
Swifts don't fledge like other birds..they will fly during the day and roost in the Tower till the fall migration.. Other Swifts may also use this tower to roost.. last year we had a total of 15 swifts in the Tower until Sept... I believe.
Lynn, I got one reply that the Helsinki Director was "Out of Office" til 8-11. I sent to the Org. & the chief of conservation and science. Just want to know their policy & that people worldwide are saddened at lack of concern. Would be different if there were no camera.
For all those hitting the hay, Pleasant Feather Dreams ;>)
On the Finney birds. I have been so touched by the way the siblings behave towards the little disabled one. They are showing more concern, it seems, than the people involved.
Shirley - I have no clue about your mystery birds...I would have said Gold Finch but they look too large. Hopefully Deb or one of our more knowledgeable birders can give you a name!
Shirley, Sissy's husband, Tom, would call those birds, Black Winged Mustard Birds:) They look like some kind of a warbler. They are beautiful, whatever they are.
Hi All! It has been a busy day. First Laurel and I took Jacob shopping. Purchased his school uniforms. Came home, deposited him with Jack and then Laurel and I went shopping for her. She has three new outfits for the start of school, an extra top and some new shoes.
Tomorrow morning she and Joseph are going to Six Flags and in the evening Jack, Jacob and I will join them for a few hours.
I am not feeling well. Have been taking antibiotics before the do the root canal in a week because of an infection. The antibiotics are making me sick! Talk about heartburn. I was all but doubled over. A little better now!
Lolly, sorry you are reacting to the A/B---call the doctor and have him change it! Shirley, I kmnow I've seen that bird before, but can't recall it off the top of my head....I'll see if it's in my Field Guide. BTW----what program do you use to screen-grab??
I think you are right--we had thought grosbeaks, but I wasn't able to find one that looked exactly right. Just looked at a pictue. I remember we had quite a few. The website says they come in flocks in the winter.
I had a program for my HP copier that allowed me to scan pictures and edit them with the computer. Now it wants me to install the program again, and so far I have not located the disk. I do not know why the program disappeared from the computer.
I have been picking up the screen pics by pressing the "print screen" key. When I connect this computer to a printer, I will probably have to go into the printer commands and turn off all the print orders.
Probably so, Shirley!! I've never hooked my netbook to the printer, either. I'll download that and see if it works. Tried SnagIt and it didn't always work---and it expired after 30 days. Calling it a day. Close to end of a good book at tubside---hope to finish it tonight. See you all in the morning. Oh...late reoly to I think Dana----haven't heard how friends'' BF is---surgery was to be today...thanks for prayers. Peace.
I usually find it by Googling. I was just confused by the discription of it as a tower. So it is not on the side of someone's house, then. They are trying to simulate a chimney, it seems.
Good night everyone! Just to add my two cents, for what it's worth, I concur that the mystery birds are Evening Grosbeaks. We had them visit once. It's getting late and I'm hurting from the weather changes (arthritis) and must try to get some sleep. It's been a great day without the A/C but it'll be back on tomorrow. Hurry Autumn! Blessings around. diann
Good Morning, a quick stop for me, time for sleep soon.
Wanda I finally watched the caterpillar to chrysalis video, a Masterpiece! Very fascinating!
Red-Headed Woodpeckers! Found a nest out near the VA Center in Martinsburg, two years ago, saw them often then but never since. Only other time I have seen them, and a lot of them, was in Suffolk, Virginia ten years ago. One of my favorites!

I finally gave up and called Dell, who for a modest price, walked me through it all on the phone from India. Little hard to understand at times, but they got me through it and back on-line.
Now, I've got a million applications and settings to load. A couple of hours ago I was so tired I couldn't keep my eyes open, so I went to bed. I laid there for a while so tired I couldn't keep my eyes closed.... So, now I'm up again trying to make myself tired enough to go to sleep this time.

Shirley, enjoy the new floor -- will Hunter be helping the installers?
Well, this is National Night Out Against Crime and Frank & I are busy on this day. Our community has a pot luck and the police bring popsickles for the children. Adults bring food and sodas. Frank is Neighborhood Watch Coordinator. There will be patrols out all day and well into the night. Most all homes will have all outdoor lights turned on.
GOOD MORNING EAGLE BUDDIES!!---What a way to start a day---Check the NORFOLK site!---A handsome 'REBEL' is branching!!---She looks huge!---aah!---COOL!
Sharon, thank you for the instructions. I was getting really tired of having to deal with saying "no" everytime I logged onto the blog. It thought I was being threatened by your pictures.
I have not been able to access the Norfolk site since shortly after the rebels fledged. Does anyone know what I need to do differently? All I get is a blank screen so gave up checking in. Used to just be able to click on.
Also forgot to say I hope there will be a positive/supportive response about the Finney chick.
Off to start my contribution to tonight's pot luck. I probably will not stay more than a few minutes as weather predicts at least 90 today w/high humidity. Too old to tolerate that much heat/humidity. Makes me sick.
Good morning all. Judie we needed that last night. I was making the bed look out the window and there is a police car. Go out front 3 doors down my neighbor is out and said her husband was a sleep on the sofa last night and had the window up. Someone got half way in when the cats jump and woke her husband up. Good cats. Robbery jumped back out the window. They keep telling us the Inner Harbor is safe. NOT.
Judie, Hunter is helping the floor installers by staying out of the way, as am I. However, they have already put one scratch on my existing hardwood. Someone will have to fix that.
George has noticed that they left the front door open, and he had some thoughts of escape, but they are kinda scary and are making a lot of noise, so George is staying near me. He jumps every time there is a really loud noise, and he is jumping a lot. But George will not go upstairs. He has to be in the middle of things. I have always believed that George thinks he is a dog. He comes running whenever the doorbell rings.
GOOD MORNING EAGLE BUDDIES!! CONGRATS! MITS--You are our #1'EAGLE MOM' today & every day---MORNIN'--MITS--MAGPIE--SHARON---MEGAN--MOVIN'JIM--NATURENUT--& JUDIE!!!-----No grand-kids laughing -- no dogs--wanting to chase a ball---no Popsicles--no games---no noise!---just CNN & me---MISS THEM!---But I have missed you folks TOO!!!---
I have been checking the FINLAND OSPREYS every day!---I have been praying the (DNR of FINLAND or what ever org. in control)--MIGHT CLIMB TO THE NEST & REMOVE THE WOUNDED 'CHECK' & TAKE TO REHAB!!----after the other chicks are gone-----**I remember 2 yrs or so---one of the chicks died in the nest & a man climbed up & removed it---The other chick was still in the nest!!----I KNOW SUZANNE REMEMEBERS that happening!!
Good morning all. Happy Birthday, Barb! Ceil, so scary....keep your windows closed and locked! Shirley, be careful that George just get tangled under your feet when he runs for the doorbell! Norma, so glad you enjoyed your time with the grands! Know you miss them all over again now. Very foggy here this am but has burned off now. Sharon & Sissy just MAY gett he Lemonade Sat---they said it could be around 100 here both Sat & Sun.
HEDGIE!---I had forgotten about ANISE---I used to love that flavor---every since you mentioned it--I have been trying to remember--(i am older that you)--a chewing gum with that flavor?---OR AM I NUTS???
WHAT COOL FRIENDS!!---that has been driving me crazy ever since HEDGIE mentioned 'ANISE'---YEP!--I think it was called 'ADAMS BLACK JACK GUM'---ho! THANKS!!!!
Need to fix lunch, and Hunter is going into his "I'm-bored-to-death and-the-only-thing-that-will-save me-is-a-new-video-game" mode. We might be heading out to the park to take pictures. The child does not need another game.
Yep, blue wrapper. I love clove gum..mber it? Remember it? Can still get both from a catalog called The Vermont Store or something like that. My mom just sent me a box!
SHIRLEY & MEMA JO!---I had a boy friend who chewed CLOVE gum!---ho!---I remember the BEEMAN gum---didn't like it---but we would cover our teeth with the BLACK JACK gum!!-- (TOOK SO LITTLE TO MAKE US HAPPY)
In 1871 Adams received the first patent on a gum-making machine and began mass producing a chicle-based gum. His first gum ("Snapping and Stretching") was pure chicle with no flavoring, but sold well enough to encourage Adams in his plans.
He began to experiment with flavorings, beginning with sarsaparilla. In 1884, he began adding a licorice flavoring and called his invention Adams' Black Jack, the first flavored gum in America. At this time, chewing gum changed shape from lump or chunks, to sticks. It was also the first gum to be offered in sticks as we know it today. It was an instant success.
Does anyone remember the little tiny squares of breath freshener called SenSens? My dad always had a tin of them in his pocket---loved the smell but I hated the taste---thought they tasted like shaving lotion!!! Can still get them from the same catalog, too. How 'bout that link Shirley gave....they only make these retro gums every three yrs!
GOOD AFTERNOON... Lynn how sweet that your 90 yr. old Mother sends you gifts!:) My Mom only gives gifts to Gene. This is true!
I was just watching Finny land and there are 3 chicks and Mom. She is feeding the crippled one. That leg looks BADLY deformed. I don't think it will heal properly on it's own:(:(
WANDA---did you read the note i blogged earlier----About 2 yrs ago--one of the osprey chicks died in that nest---someone climbed up & removed it---That's when SUZANNE & I did all that reading about the nest, etc---I'm hoping that could happen here -- if the chick can't fly----
Wanda, sorry your mommy dotes on your hubby!! I remember that happening in my past life! Norma, the info that Chrissy got was that they would NOT take any action about the poor psprey---but she and Loretta are trying to make contacts.
I'm getting a late start here today. Have been doing some work in the yard, which I've neglected lately. I've looked all OVER, but can't find the little gimpy heron today. I hope nothing caught him overnight! There's not a single loose feather in the yard, though, so I don't think so. Interestingly enough, there are no other fledgling herons here today, either. Since the gimpy one could fly, I wonder if they all just left and went fishing at the Santa Ana River. I did go out at first light today to look around, and there were some young herons in the big trees, but they did not come down on the ground like they have been. I was really concerned, because the gardener is supposed to do the yard today, and I didn't want him to scare (or injure) any of the herons. I never did get a call back from the Rehab people in Huntington Beach. I wonder if they're shut down because of the Calif. budget mess. Everything else has been scaled back a lot, so could be.
Andrea, let's all keep positive thoughts that the herons ALL were able to go on about their business-----or could the rehab people have come after you left for school last evening and rescued Gimpy? If so, the others probably felt safe to go ahead and leave....??? How did your test go? Fine, I'm sure!
Shirley, I looked in my newest bird book, the Smithsonian Field Guide to the Birds of North America, and I think your birds might be Evening Grosbeaks. The ones in your picture look like males, which have a yellow eyebrow, and prominent white secondary wing feathers. I went to www.allaboutbirds.org and searched Evening Grosbeak.
HEDGIE!---Sounds as if maybe they will assist the broken leg chick---but for now---according to the writer---the chick is doing well??????----Let us wait & pray---
No, Lynn, I didn't give Rehab my address, just my phone number and general area. I figured I'd give them the particulars when they called me back--which they didn't! I did fine on one quiz, but on the second one I didn't do as well, because about 6 Legal Transcription students came in and started practicing with a really loud dictation tape. Had trouble hearing myself think! I'll talk to my teacher about it, and see if I can retake the quiz. Judie, I read some of the blog to catch up, and I'm ROFLMBO about your cucumber! I've got a few alien life forms living in my fridge, which I hope to clean out this weekend.
Oh, I hope they decide to help the chick with the broken leg! Prayers definitely going up for that situation! I've been following to see what happens. Lynn, I am hoping and praying that the gimpy heron was able to recover enough to be able to fly away with the others. I looked extremely well in the yard, and there wasn't a single feather loose anywhere, so chances are good. God bless the little guy. No gardeners yet, or for that matter, no herons either, except a few in the big trees.
You know what, I find it really fascinating that THREE other herons gave the little gimpy guy so much company and support! We've had a single fledgling hang out in the yard for a day or two in years past, but never four at once! That's a first.
Well, gotta go study more for tonight's test at school. Hope all of you have a fantastic day! Oh--and forgive my manners: HAPPY BIRTHDAY, BARB! Hope it's a really good one! I'll check back later when I take a much-needed break from the books. TTFN! :o]
Hi All, online service down most of the day after Verizon guys were here!!!!! Earlier I had checked Bird Cams Around the World & a poster named Macko from Hungary had a link to the "ringers" of the Finland ospreys----is connected w/Finnish Museum of Natural History. They would be the ones who have seen these birds and could explain the condition & prognosis & their (in)actions. Jo's forum also gave some good info, but I don't like hearing scientific stuff from the camera owner!!!! I've asked several people here and they say ospreys are not good in captivity---too traumatized. Have you ever seen an educational osprey? Deb might have some input---after all, didn't Janie have Gabby for a year? For now "Koo" is probably in the right place w/food and family. I hope it will fly & not be a sitting duck like last year's.When wingercising, I've seen leg hang down a little, not stay bacwards. I think the joint was broken & then healed frozen up. Of course there will be a problem if it does catch fish w/one foot on how it will land or perch?!
I agree Loretta, think some of those people on that particular forum, are upset because they are getting flack from viewers, if it is in such bad shape as some experts might feel, it should have been euthanized, Suz was remarking this a.m., how Mom is not feeding it....

Good Night Mits.
I'm not far behind you.
Shirley - this Potter movie wasn't as scarey as the others. My grandsons are just getting older I think but we have 2 more movies to go!
On the Finney birds. I have been so touched by the way the siblings behave towards the little disabled one. They are showing more concern, it seems, than the people involved.
I think Hunter was okay with it, but he is only 8.
Kathryn also wanted Hunter to be prepared for the ending of this one.
Shirley - I have no clue about your mystery birds...I would have said
Gold Finch but they look too large.
Hopefully Deb or one of our more knowledgeable birders can give you a name!
Shirley, Sissy's husband, Tom, would call those birds, Black Winged Mustard Birds:)

My comments are posting very slowly.
If you lose me to the Blogger Cop - I'll be back tomorrow!
I looked up goldfinches and orioles. I believe we thought some kind of yellow grosbeak when we saw them.
Googled black winged mustard bird, but did not get very far!

Sorry Lolly. My stomach does not like some medications, either.
Shirley, your birds look like evening grosbeaks to me.
Nite all.
I have been taking Prilosec for a long time. Now I am hearing ib tv that I should not be doing that. Will ask doctor about that. Heartburn is no fun.
I was going to say grosbeaks also on Shirley's birds. They are larger than goldfinches & have a thick beak.
Lolly, sorry you are reacting to the A/B---call the doctor and have him change it!
Shirley, I kmnow I've seen that bird before, but can't recall it off the top of my head....I'll see if it's in my Field Guide.

I think you are right--we had thought grosbeaks, but I wasn't able to find one that looked exactly right. Just looked at a pictue. I remember we had quite a few. The website says they come in flocks in the winter.

To screen-grab, I am using IrfanView.
Just realized that is what you asked.
Evening Grosbeak, I think, Shirley!!!!
Thanks, I think so too.
Exactly what is the chimney swift tower?
I have been picking up the screen pics by pressing the "print screen" key. When I connect this computer to a printer, I will probably have to go into the printer commands and turn off all the print orders.

It was just a structure by a house where the Swifts built their nests.
I don't see it on this site....
Headed in for peaceful sleep!
Good Night All
Prayers for everyone's needs
((hugs)) ♥
P.S. Shirley, can't find my link to the Swifts cam.....Jo has it! It's a manmade deep, narrow box that the chimney swifts nest in.
Big day tomorrow. The floor people are coming. And Hunter will be here by 6:30 again tomorrow.
Thanks for helping me with the mystery birds.
God bless all.

NOT.
Our Momster member Barb Willard is celebrating her birthday today!
Happy Birthday Barb and may all your birthday wishes come true
Judie, Hunter is helping the floor installers by staying out of the way, as am I. However, they have already put one scratch on my existing hardwood. Someone will have to fix that.
George has noticed that they left the front door open, and he had some thoughts of escape, but they are kinda scary and are making a lot of noise, so George is staying near me. He jumps every time there is a really loud noise, and he is jumping a lot. But George will not go upstairs. He has to be in the middle of things. I have always believed that George thinks he is a dog. He comes running whenever the doorbell rings.
no place is safe anymore, Ceil

HEDGIE!---I had forgotten about ANISE---I used to love that flavor---every since you mentioned it--I have been trying to remember--(i am older that you)--a chewing gum with that flavor?---OR AM I NUTS???
I think I remember anise chewing gum, Norma. I don't like anise, though. I think it came in a blue wrapper.
Forgot to say Good Morning!
Daughter is visiting...
BBL
SHIRLEY!---WHOA!---I think you have it!!!!----It was in a light blue wrapper with black gum????--
As a kid--I loved that gum!!
Norma--Adams Black Jack chewing gum.
Black Jack gum is the first thing that came to my mind! I sometimes can find it at Bob Evans.
Black Jack Gum
WHAT COOL FRIENDS!!---that has been driving me crazy ever since HEDGIE mentioned 'ANISE'---YEP!--I think it was called 'ADAMS BLACK JACK GUM'---ho! THANKS!!!!
Need to fix lunch, and Hunter is going into his "I'm-bored-to-death and-the-only-thing-that-will-save me-is-a-new-video-game" mode. We might be heading out to the park to take pictures. The child does not need another game.
Norma, would you believe you can order chewing gum online? Check the link I gave you above.
Black Jack??? I thought it was licorice----much stronger than anise and I don't like it!! Did you know that licorice can raise blood pressure?
Yep, blue wrapper. I love clove gum..mber it? Remember it? Can still get both from a catalog called The Vermont Store or something like that. My mom just sent me a box!
SHIRLEY & MEMA JO!---I had a boy friend who chewed CLOVE gum!---ho!---I remember the BEEMAN gum---didn't like it---but we would cover our teeth with the BLACK JACK gum!!--
(TOOK SO LITTLE TO MAKE US HAPPY)
MEMA JO!---Lots of BURROWING OWLS out today!---So funny to watch!!
GOOD AFTERNOON...
Lynn how sweet that your 90 yr. old Mother sends you gifts!:)
My Mom only gives gifts to Gene.
This is true!
I was just watching Finny land and there are 3 chicks and Mom. She is feeding the crippled one. That leg looks BADLY deformed. I don't think it will heal properly on it's own:(:(
I do remember SenSens, but don't recall if I liked them or not.
HEDGIE---Oh yeah--I remember 'SEN-SENS'---I never liked them much--but if offered--I always took some!
I had really forgotten about them!
Do you all remember the licorice cigarettes?----loved licorice too!!
Lynn, you have a plethia of trivia:)
Uh...I believe that should be PLETHORA.
Isn't it great how we all have a special talent of some sort? Some of us have many...I haven't figured mine out yet!:)
MORNIN' WANDA!---I didn't think you were old enough to remember SEN-SENS----Married at EIGHT! ho!
You have the great ability of being the hostess with the mostest when we are aboard the Eagle Express!! :)
Thanks for the info HEDGIE!---I was betting they would remove it from the nest---if osprey chick couldn't fly on it's own---whoa--
I have a 'HIDDEN' talent!!---ho!
Thunderbooming in Bluefield and the sky is getting dark!
I have a BS degree. Does that count as a talent?? :)
and that didn't come from any college! :)

Hi, Everyone,
I'm getting a late start here today.
Shirley,
I looked in my newest bird book, the Smithsonian Field Guide to the Birds of North America, and I think your birds might be Evening Grosbeaks. The ones in your picture look like males, which have a yellow eyebrow, and prominent white secondary wing feathers. I went to www.allaboutbirds.org and searched Evening Grosbeak.
Say, I remember Black Jack gum too!
Haven't seen any since Hector was a pup!
going out for awhile...bbl
wonder if we will get a new thread today???
Go to pg 15 of Jo's link, and scroll down to posts w/ todays date.
Posted a picture on my blog of the Carolina wren nest. There are 4 baby birds now.
HEDGIE!---Sounds as if maybe they will assist the broken leg chick---but for now---according to the writer---the chick is doing well??????----Let us wait & pray---
need lunch!--
Thanks for everyone's help with my mystery birds. Everyone agrees that they're evening grosbeaks.
They are striking yellow birds sitting in the snow.
Need to get Hunter going on some pictures.
Oh--and forgive my manners:
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, BARB! Hope it's a really good one!
I'll check back later when I take a much-needed break from the books.
TTFN! :o]
STEVE HAS GIVEN US AN AFTERNOON DELIGHT...ER, UH...I MEAN AN AFTERNOON THREAD. COME ON OVER******************************
