NORMA, speaking of Hug a Dog... check out my Wild and Wonderful blog. My Grandaughter rescued an abandoned dog about 2 months ago and I've posted a photo of him. Very sad story.

ATLANTA WEDNESDAY UPDATE
Wednesday, August 27

Lun Lun got up twice today to eat some bamboo and biscuits. She also ate a small bit of banana, but she is mostly refusing to eat fruit right now. Yesterday afternoon, she spent about 30 minutes taking bamboo sprigs and biscuits from me, which is more than she has eaten in several days. This may or may not be significant; since she has been eating so little in recent days, she may just need calories, so she feels hungry. In 2006, the day before she gave birth to Mei Lan, she started eating a little more than she had in the previous weeks. Perhaps her body knew she would need the energy to support giving birth and producing milk for the cub, especially since she did not eat for several days after giving birth. However, Lun Lun continues to spend almost all of her time sleeping. As one of the keepers watching her overnight, I’ve gotten to see her sleeping a lot. She usually gets up once or twice per night to eliminate, drink or eat, but she only spends 5-10 minutes up and moving around. Also, as Kate mentioned, she has started "nest building"
recently. The last two nights I worked, she spent about 10 minutes at a time digging at the floor, biting her nest box and scratching the walls. Even with such little activity from Lun Lun, we have to stay vigilant overnight and watch for any signs of impending birth. Two years ago Lun Lun broke the record for longest labor recorded in pandas, so who know what she will do this year – if she goes for breaking the shortest record we are not going to miss anything! At this point, the staff is ready for a birth; we are just waiting for Lun Lun. Her latest hormone results show that her progestin levels continue to drop, but have not yet reached baseline. Hopefully we will know more in the next few days.

Costume Lady said...

Yes, Jo, it is a very bright white. But many cars are white, so I will have to fly something (like an eagle) on the antenae (if it has one?). I will never live down the fact that my car was lost to me for at least a half hour. Jo probably used up half a tank of gas driving me around trying to find it.

Costume Lady said...

Please take a careful look at it so that you may help me find it if I lose it again! LOL

I think you could use a personalized license plate

Well, now that I don't have to do the Rain Dance anymore, I need to get some work done. BBL
By the way, doctor gave Mom some pills yesterday to increase her appetite. She has gone down to 113 lbs.from 135 when I first started being her caregiver. I'll bet she will eat all the crabs off the steam table. LOL! Gotta love her :)

magpie said...

Yah, Mits, caught the view just in time too, cause they have bailed!

Well, now one is back...it almost looks like a Winter Sky...

magpie said...

Okay Wanda - Saw the pics, including the Chrysalis box...

Is Gene holding up those fingers on both hands to indicate his age??

Of is he just saying Hi with one Hand, and Peace with the other?

He looks great ! As does GeeGee.

Hahaha. Just kidding you a little.

Did you try the sonic tactic for finding it? Press the 'emergency' button on your keyless entry remote, and it will blow intermittently until you press that button again. You should be able to hear what direction to look for your lost auto at least.

Believe me, it happens out here in So Cal with all these enormous malls and tourist attractions. It's always a good idea to find a landmark of some kind before you leave the vehicle.

Jim, I thank you for your advice. I need all the help I can get. 95% of my travels have my hubby driving, therefore, I don't pay too much attention to where I am going or where I have been....so when I drive, I pay no attention to anything! Then when I come out of the place that I have driven to, I have NO CLUE where I am.

NatureNut said...

Good Afternoon Eagle Buds!! Guess we won't be able to see them :.((
WE GOT RAIN, but not much.
See that on Gene's B'Day, Wanda got a new car!!How does that work?
My hubby's (Fubby) B'Day is in Oct. Wonder if he'll let me take my all time fave Trans Am out of retirement? It got about 80K miles on it, so he put it in garage, BOOO! I think it should come out for a spin once in awhile. I'm using a practical pewter Durango now that he bought for me.
For you trivia buffs---first car I bought for my 21 B'day was a Sunbeam Alpine convertible!!! The one w/fins-black w/red int.It konked out on drive home from dealer. They forgot to put water in it!!!DUH!!!I made them bring me a new one.It ended up slate blue--out of black. They had one in the TV show Get Smart.

movin said...

nATUREnUT...

I recall the Sunbeam Alpine (and Tiger) very well. They were a very good sportscar and one of my favorites.

One time not long after high school when I wasn't very gainfully employed (if at all), I got the chance to buy a nearly brand new one for $1300.00, but I couldn't beg, borrow or steal that big a stack.

A good friend of the family and a contractor had gotten married and gone to Europe for the honeymoon. While there they bought the Alpine (British Racing Green/black interior and top) and drove it a few miles as they made their tour.

But when they returned they reverted to the big American machines, and just wanted to get a few bucks for the sportscar. Boy, did I want to get that car, but it just wasn't possible.

MGA and Austin Healey were a couple of other "affordable" English sports cars in those days.

NatureNut said...

Cool story Jim. Too bad you couldn't get one. A few years ago, the exact year and color of mine was on Ebay.It had been rebuilt w/V8 Ford motor like the Tigers had. I asked some questions about it & seller whose reserve must not have been met, asked me if I wanted to buy it for $12,000!!!!!It was in CA. At least I saved the pic!It looks like mine.

movin said...

Besides "Get Smart" and a few other cameos for the Sunbeam, if you remember the movie "Butterfield 8," wherein Elizabeth Taylor won an Oscar (I think), she drove a red Alpine; and I believe she killed herself by driving it off a bridge at the end of the flick.

GREAT PANDA NEWS FROM ATLANTA

Panda Lun Lun is Pregnant

NatureNut said...

I remember the Sunbeam in Butterfield 8. And there was another one in a movie driven by the mother of Hayley Mills. Can't remember the movie name, but HM was disturbed, spoiled girl who was visiting her Grandmother, played by Dame Edith Evans and she was taken under the wing of Deborah Kerr who was hired as a governess & garden consultant. John Mills was in it too. It was The Chalk Garden. (got 2 brain cells together!)

MITS said...

Thursday, August 28-SPECIAL EDITION!
Today is one of the most exciting days of my career. I went to the giant panda building this afternoon to try to do an ultrasound session with Lun Lun. I didn’t expect her to cooperate, because she has not cooperated for the last three weeks. But we were lucky. She cooperated and we saw a fetus with a strong heartbeat! The fetus appeared to be well developed. So, we expect a birth at anytime!

We saw Buta Buta - either the cam went off right at birth or something unusual happened - SHARON will know because it happened to her!

When Buta Buta was born - that cam was on 24/7 as I remember. Just think THIS COULD BE A SET OF TWINS!!

Costume Lady said...

Maybe Atlanta will leave cam on longer now that they have a VERY IMPORTANT TENANT.

Eagle-Eyed's Sissy said...

Oh Lord, if I were to see the baby born, ya'll would probably have to put me away! I really wish this was our precious Mei that was pregnant. Her and Tai have my heart!! But Lun Lun and Buta Buta are precious too.

Eagle-Eyed's Sissy said...

I know we need rain but I don't like this dreary weather. I have been acting like a panda this afternoon, sacked on the couch with the dog and Law and Order on the tube. First high school football game tomorrow night and then the lake for the weekend. My team, Bluefield Beavers, plays Tom's team, Graham G-Men, tomorrow night. Biggest game of the year. It is blast!!

NatureNut said...

More Football--Baltimore vs. Atlanta

Costume Lady said...

Do you two get into any knock down, drag out arguments during the game?

Costume Lady said...

Loretta, is that your car in the avatar?

Eagle-Eyed's Sissy said...

Not recently Wanda, but we have. Now it is more just good natured ribbing and bragging rights. Tom has always sat on Beavers side with me and cheered for Graham, with all his Graham clothes on. It is a wonder he hasn't been mugged. We do have fun. Everyone in Bluefield WV and Bluefield VA is there, more than 10,000 people at a high school football game.

MITS said...

MITS said...

what fun that must be, Sissy!

Eagle-Eyed's Sissy said...

Yeah, it is standing room only. We have a really nice stadium, Mitchell Stadium. It is one of the nicest I have seen in the state. It is every bit as nice as Wheeling Island. New turf, great stands, we even have a cannon to fire after every touchdown!!

Eagle-Eyed's Sissy said...

When will Ceil be home, Mits? Sharon likes to get on the boat but she won't get in the water if it is over her head. I am like you, think she needs help. But different strokes!!

NatureNut said...

Wanda, yes that's my favorite I bought in 9-94. 2nd car I bought since the Sunbeam!! I told about it earlier about 3:50. My favorite color, too.

Mema Jo said...

Anyone remember Atlanta panda cam when ButaButa was young. I just remember the night light going on - have no memory of what time - thought it was around 10pm. These senior moments are frustrating!!!!

Eagle-Eyed's Sissy said...

I watched the video a minute ago of Buta being born. That little bitty baby made a whole lot of noise.

Skins are not doing well....thank goodness it's just pre-season!
When I got home my big living room TV wouldn't work...trying to watch game on a 19" in the sunroom...giving me a headache!
So who knows how long it will take to get the TV guy to come when I call in the morning....and my TIVO is hooked up to that TV...argh!!!!!

Turned on the tube tonight w/ 25 seconds left in the Skins game...glad I didn't have it on watching it...they got whooped! Not quite as bad as last week, but by a good bit...we'll see what happens this season!

deb said...

It is after 10 for you easterners, so I am sure I missed some of you. We had a girl's night out tonight and had a good time. Great food, company and a few margaritas, too.

The eagles have become frequent visitors this week. With most of the schools in session the lakes are not so busy anymore, so they must feel more comfortable about visiting. At least today they didn't chase the osprey trying to steal the fish. Today was treat day and they got fresh trout from the fish hatchery, no way were they giving them up to the eagles.

It is amazing how they know it is trout that gets put out for them. They come in so fast to eat on trout days. They must send out a signal of some sort because birds we haven't seen since the last trout day a week ago showed up today.

deb said...

Paula, Gabby gained two more ounces, but the decision was finally made to take him back to Idaho. The earliest he could be released would be Sept. 5 and he would have to learn how to fish and be ready to head south within such a short time span. We have all gotten so attached to him, we don't want to send him off without a fair chance. He will come back next summer and be released then. Jane has two other osprey, so she will add Gabby to their area. She said that osprey are very hard to keep in captivity during the winter because they have to be kept warm at all times. They wrap their enclosure to keep the cold out.

paula eagleholic said...

Thanks Deb. Will say a little prayer for Gabby!

Glad you had a nice night out!

paula eagleholic said...

Magpie...you have mail!

paula eagleholic said...

And Deb, that's funny about the trout....

hedgie said...

Paula, did you hear anything back from Steve about the cam?
Deb, know you all are disppointed about Gabby, but it sounds like a wise decision. Know you'll miss him!
Goodnight fowl friends! Blessings on all.

NatureNut said...

Very interesting Deb! Were there other regular ospreys at that lake before Jane's juvies came? Too bad the rehabbers have to spend all winter here. But I guess it's good if Gabby isn't ready---probably wouldn't survive if turned loose.
I'm going bonkers here editing zoo pics for blog. Put 1 set on already & have more to go. Am trying to decide on 1 meerkat, or a set. They're so cute & many people love them, I'll prob put a few on. Oh well, & then I have to remember to hit the hay for work tomorrow & Saturday! Boo hiss

My good news for tomorrow is ; I am off! No work! Gonna have a great day....will tell ya about it when I get home...out of here by 9am...not sure what time I'll be home...but I know it will be good!

MITS said...

Loretta, had to come back on and say awesome shots of the Asian Trail animals, you got an awesome shot of the clouded leopard...did you get to see the red pandas?

paula eagleholic said...

Nature - you do have some awesome pics! Love the hummers and the marsh trail...and the zoo pics are great too.

Off to bed now...will check out Deb's pics tomorrow.

MITS said...

Deb, Ilove your pics also:):):)!

magpie said...

The Sea Eagle is at Ferry Boat Finney's - looking kinda tousled...

magpie said...

That beak is awesome !

NatureNut said...

Helen, I don't think we saw the red pandas. Can't always get pics the way you want. I wish the leopard's face was showing and inside there is a lot of glare from the glass acting as a mirror, & tons of people! The sloth bears have frosted glass designs, so you have to shoot between the cracks in some places.

Just posted some more--one set (Round Things subtitle) has a couple animals especially for Lynn and Lolly!!! Tee Hee. ENJOY....
Meerkats tomorrow!!! And "That's All Folks!" Nighty nite

Good morning Eagle friends!! Gonna be a great day!! GO BEAVERS!!!

magpie said...

Hi SISSY -
Have a good day..hope the skies clear for the football game, and hope YOUR BEAVERS win...

xo

Eagle-Eyed's Sissy said...

Thanks Magpie!! I will sit in the rain, no problem!! Would rather it was dry but that is not mandatory with high school football. Rain, snow, sleet, or hail!!

magpie said...

Wet Crow party at PIX PA Woods - saw a few deer, squirrels and maybe even a racoon a short time ago.

magpie said...

That's good, SISSY - Some schools are afraid to mess up the playing field on a wet game night - so they re-schedule sometimes...
that takes all the fun out of it !

magpie said...

It would be a good time to have feathers or Panda Fur to keep yourself insulated from the water...

floralgirl said...

Morning all- Still raining here this am, welcome rain, we need it so bad. BUT- timing is everything, and I need to cut flowers this am,and it will be a soggy job.

magpie said...

Good Morning Megan...hope it goes better than it seems like it's going to...get your hip waders out...

floralgirl said...

That's ok, beautiful rains ...just gonna get wet..no biggie..no complaints here.
Spent last nite at a viewing for friends whose 18 yr old son committed suicide, so sad.. funeral this am, can't seem to get my mood to change- so I am gonna get to work- if you have a teenage child- hug them.. talk to them.. cherish them...
have a good Friday everybody...
Wake up, Mason!!!

magpie said...

Prayers for comfort and support for your friend and the family, and you too, Megan, that is heartbreaking...

Waiting fir this last shower to pass..I know this is long- sorry- probably be a new thread soon anyway...from Mason's site guestbook-The Shepherd University Ram Band under the direction of Dr.Mark McCoy, will be dedicating the biggest hit in their 2008 show at the home and road games to
Mason. "Coming Out of The Dark" was written by Gloria Estafan and her husband while
Gloria was paralyzed in a hospital bed with a broken back suffered during a bus accident.
It showed her resolve to get up and come back to the people that loved her. The lyrics
are especially fitting for Mason:

"Why be afraid, if I'm not alone
Life is never easy the rest is unknown
up till now for me it's been hands against stone
Each and every moment searching for what to believe

Coming out of the Dark, I finally see the light now
and it's shining on me
Coming out of the Dark, I know the love that saved me
Share it with me

Starting again is part of the plan
And Ill be so much stronger holding your hand
Step by step Ill make it through I know I can
It may not make it easier but I have felt you
Near all the way

Forever, forever I stand on the rock of your love
Forever Ill stand on the rock
Forever, forever I stand on the rock of your love
Love is all it takes, no matter what we face
Mason was to attend Shepherd University this year with scholarships as a music major on Bassoon. We know he was looking forward to it as the faculty and Dr. McCoy were too. Mason was a member of the University Orchestra since ninth grade and gained great experience as an orchestral player under the conducting of our friends Dr.McMoy and Anne Munro.
Anybody that can, should try to attend performances of the Ram Band, Orchestra and Jazz ensembles and hear the quality of musicians that Shepherd University has.
We thank you.
Sylvia and Brian

GOOD MORNING EVERYONE...
I just can't imagine what the Ellsworths are going through...not knowing what the future may bring for their son. God Bless them and Mason.
Thanks to you Megan for keeping us up to date on him.

That's what happens when the Momsters/Dadster dance!

Megan - You are giving good advice about showing your love to your children or any young person you can reach out to - Tough world out there!

Mason did open his eyes for his sister Melissa the other day. I see that as a good sign.

GOOD MORNING EVERYONE...HAPPY LABOR DAY WEEKEND

magpie said...

The Sea Eagles are enjoying themselves at the Finney Water Nest..haven't seen the Bird at the other Finney nest yet....anyone else ?

MITS said...

been watching those magnificent eagles too, Margy....

magpie said...

Sure wish I could have caught and saved the picture of the unusual bird in the Water nest overnight...might have been some kind of sea gull or another kind of hawk, but my first thought was some kind of ptarmigan....and there was a Hooded Crow in it too. Now, I can't save any pictures, so something went koo-koo on my Kodak program. Grrrrr......
Oh well, to Quote a favorite spouse of a favorite Momster:
"IT IS WHAT IT IS..."

XO Back to the kitchen, I'm cooking !

MITS said...

Megan, my prayers go out to your friend's family...I can only imagine what pain they are going thru

MITS said...

Margy, it might have been a Jackdaw?

MITS said...

I wonder where the sea eagles migrate to...? Have to check that out on Goggle?

deb said...

I popped in before taking off for the day just in time to see the sea eagles! I am pokey this morning for some reason. TTUL Have a great day!

MITS said...

No worries, Deb, I'm pokey every morning...

MITS said...

ship going by sea eagle nest

magpie said...

Yeah, Mits, a nice BIG boat, and a bunch of little ones all over the place. I "caught" a shot of a little speed boat zipping pretty close to the nest this morning...it's on the computer "somewhere."

The bird, reminded me somewhat of the hawk-type bird that Deb had posted back in May I think, mostly tan, with some white....I'll look around at some bird pics and see what I come up with.

Back in a bit on that one...

Costume Lady said...

Thanks to DEB for that beautiful photo of the lighted Ferry Boat last night. Looks like a post card.

NatureNut said...

Happy Eagle AM Everyone!
Prayers for Megan's friends and MASON, Wake Up!!!

Helen, think I read on the Norway Sea Eagle cam site (Sunnmersposten) that those adults stay there near the nest all winter.

If you weren't up late, I put new pics on blog---Zoo down to Indigo Bunting. Meerkats tonight, I hope.
Gotta get to work. Have a great "April Shower" day!!

Costume Lady said...

Margy, don't you ever sleep? Lady, you need your rest!

Costume Lady said...

Saw those, Loretta. Always love your Nature photos...but then, I guess that is why you are called Naturenut.

magpie said...

Colored like a ptarmigan, but with a beak more like a gull...still looking, searching...

MITS said...

Loretta, glad you are here....the decals on the windows at the zoo are there to prevent the migrating birds from smashing into the windows, like they were doing....most voulnteers are so against it, I'm the lone person for it, it has cut down drastically on dead birds

magpie said...

When we were watching the Norway Sea Eagles, I had NO IDEA they were as large as they are...they were fun to watch....

COSTUME LADY: I try to sleep, toss and turn a lot, but switching on and off midnights, gets me a little twisted up...I'm sure there is PANDA NAP in my future sometime today...I do keep kind of weird hours...you're right on that one!

xo

MITS said...

hey Miss Wanda....I saw you sign off late last night....I could not get to sleep

Costume Lady said...

I couldn't get to sleep either, Helen...I think Obama's speech had me stirred up. If he could do everything that he promised to do, it would be a wonderful world. I'm sure McCain will make promises equal to his. I am so between a rock and a hard place with those two. Don't really like either one. It is a sad state of affairs. REALLY bothers me.

Costume Lady said...

When one of them becomes President, we will say: It is what it is! LOL

Eagle-Eyed's Sissy said...

Boy, Wanda, I am with you on that. Just have to try to pick the lesser of 2 evils, I am afraid.

Okay, how do you know if a panda is in labor? I am watching Lun and she is snoozing. Do they sleep through labor? (Boy, now wouldn't that be a trick!!)

WAKE UP MASON.

Megan, your friends are certainly in our prayers. Terrible, terrible thing to lose a child, suicide would just make it more unbearable. God Bless Them!

Costume Lady said...

Wonder where Steve is this morning...STEVE, DID YOU FORGET US AND TAKE OFF EARLY FOR THE HOLIDAY WEEKEND? That's OK...enjoy!

MITS said...

I'm just happy we are in a free country and can vote;)

floralgirl said...

You are right, Wanda, and it seems Mccain has picked the governor of Alaska, a woman, for his VP.. and I am so tired of voting for the lesser of two evils, but that is usually what happens....
rain almost passed here, had to get some dry clothes, back outside to the plant world...
