Good morning Dave. Where are the pics you took?

GOOD MORNING EVERYONE...
We had some very late and very early bloggers. Robyn told us that she has been to Sturgis in her Biker days and Deb told us that she had just gotten back from Sturgis. Helen got up in the middle of the night to watch the boats take off from the inlet. I'll bet she's sleeping now. Margy worked all night and must surely be sleeping. Our Bluefield sisters seem to be the only ones awake right now.

Good Morning, Dave....
Will check out your photos now...

I can't find your photos either, Dave...couldn't find the last ones, either. I have tried to leave comments on some of your photos, but can't do that either.

Good morning everyone. Back from coffee and dog treats. We have some oppressive heat and humidity coming in today followed by storms. Gonna be testing out the new line connections I guess. Hope they hold. Meanwhile about 80 % of the downed trees and branches remain on the curbs waiting for their turn to be picked up. Wonder where all those limbs will be in the morning. I think our eaglets have taken their performance to new heights and distant lands. Sure wish all three of them well and long lives.

Good Late Morning All My Eagle Buddies
I need to read earlier comments but thanks Wanda for the update! Glad Deb is home safely now. She & Robyn may have some good times to share.

I have to agree with you Glo that our Eagle Family is flying up into the thermals to unknown heights.

I thought I saw them yesterday while traveling on RT 70 westward but it turned out to be 2 beautiful red tail hawks soaring.

ATLANTA'S AUGUST 1ST UPDATE

Friday, August 1
Not much has changed at the panda building the last couple of days. Lun Lun continues to have a voracious appetite and has yet to show any signs of slowing down. Yang Yang and Mei Lan are happily eating Yellow Groove and Henon leaves in between naps. Everyone is maintaining weight very well; Lun Lun is around 104 kgs. (230 lbs.), Yang Yang is around 125 kgs. (275 lbs.) and Mei Lan is around 50 kgs. (110 lbs.). Giant Pandas tend to drop a bit of weight for the summer, especially the males. Males bulk up for the springtime breeding season to impress the females, then spend more time resting in the summer, so they lose some weight. As you are now aware, summer is birthing season for the females. Once the time to give birth draws near, the females will seclude themselves in a den and wait for the arrival of the cub. During this time, they eat very little or stop eating entirely, so they also lose weight. When Mei Lan was born in 2006, Lun Lun did not eat or drink for several days. As Rebecca mentioned yesterday, we expect Lun Lun to slow down any day now, but Lun Lun likes to do things in her own time, so we continue to wait...

August 3
As I write, Mei Xiang has returned to her den for the first time since getting up this morning. She is buried in her nest, partially covered with hay and bamboo, and dining in repose.

This morning Mei was very active, getting up when called, and standing up to take a bag of leaf-eater biscuits through the window in the den door. After an ultrasound and with a full belly, she spent the rest of the day asleep in exhibit three, on the rocks.

Mei continues to show maternal behaviors. Overnight, she did eight minutes of paw licking, three minutes of nest building, two minutes of nipple licking, and five minutes of cradling (just her Kong toy this time). Unlike previous nights, she was active at 7:56 and 11:30 p.m., then slept until 5 a.m. She produced two urine samples during the day today, at 1 and 3 p.m.

August 2
Mei Xiang was up at the window in the door this morning when she heard the keeper had arrived. She was ready for an ultrasound but was quite jumpy once she was lying in the training cage. Her uterus is still enlarged but nothing significant has appeared. Mei kept sniffing around the training cage, making us wonder if a little intruder had come through recently.

This must be the year of the chipmunk at the Zoo. There are chipmunks zipping around everywhere. There is such delight in the voices of young and old, as they exclaim, "Look, a chipmunk!" It is not unusual to see visitors, both local and from afar, peering into the bushes trying to get another look at the little brown essence of busy that just darted across the path in front of them. One of our resident chipmunks has discovered that the panda runway between the yards is also its personal pathway. As one keeper described it: "It zips down the runway over thresholds, through the openings in the mesh doors, and around corners like it is running its own agility course."

Mei Xiang is far from busy. She is spending most of her time sleeping. There were some moments of pregnancy behavior, mostly nest building and paw licking. She also cradled all forms of a surrogate cub—the drain grate, her Kong toy, and even the log. She indicated that she wanted to go outside at 2 p.m. and was given access to the patio, where she sat and ate all of her produce. She produced two urine samples today, at 7:30 a.m. and 1:45 p.m.

UPDATE: August 4 2008, 8:00am
by Dr. Natalie Hall
This weekend the eagle has been doing well. He was sore from his beak dremmeling, so on Saturday morning he was reluctant to eat and had to be force-fed his morning meal. However, we increased the dose of his pain medication, and he ate well the rest of the day.

Yesterday (Sunday) he was eating well on his own and seemed very comfortable without any additional pain medications. He is now hopping from perch to perch, balancing himself as needed with his wings. We are happy to see him beginning to use his wings more and moving around freely in his enclosure.

deb said...

I went and checked on the osprey chicks. They are all still in the hacking tower. There were two ladies there watching and they had heard a rumor that they were releasing the osprey today. We spoke to the man feeding the chicks and he said 5 would be released tomorrow, then 5 more the next day, etc.

The ladies wanted to know exactly when they would open the doors so they would be there to see them all fly off. I told them they might not leave right away, but they didn't believe me. When they asked the man watching over them, he told them the same thing I had and that he didn't know when they might fly off. He, also, told them they would be around at least a couple of weeks.

I wouldn't have known about hacking towers if I hadn't learned about them on this site.

DANA, as I was reading about the illness and death of one of your family members, and what you said about God reaching his hand down and ending the suffering, brought back to my mind, the death of my father. He was in a nursing home and under the care of Hospice. We knew the end was near, but it was taking too long, in my mind. My Mom and I went to be with him early one morning and he was unresponsive with his eyes open, but not seeing. I held his hand for hours and at one point, I put the blanket over his shoulder so he wouldn't be cold and felt nothing but skin and bones where a big, strong arm used to be. I put my head down on his arm and prayed out to God to let him go and end his suffering. At that exact moment, Dad squeezed my hand and then let go and his pain and suffering ended. That was the greatest prayer that I have ever had answered.
Prayers for you and your family.

hedgie said...

I'm thinking that both Panda cams are on Mei in her birthing den with bamboo all around. Helen said she wouldn't be back until late today so
here is today's update:
August 4
Mei Xiang continues to show some pregnancy behaviors and completely baffle us with her alert and active demeanor when awake. Log cuddling, chewing, and shredding seemed to be her preferred activity last night and this morning. She was busy with this activity for 42 minutes, beginning at 1:26 a.m., for 18 minutes at about 6 a.m., and for another seven minutes a couple of hours later. The next most frequent behavior was paw licking, for a total of 20 minutes over five episodes. Mei cradled her Kong toy only briefly. Mei was very active and interactive with the keepers when she was awake. She slept from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. When she woke up, she ate bamboo for an hour. She also ate a fruitcicle today. No urine had been produced as of 3 p.m.

Mema Jo said...

Glad you were here today, Dana.
Take care of you & Ed! ((hugs))

Mema Jo said...

Both panda cams showing same scene -
GOOD! Now I don't have to keep switching.. Mei has laid down under all the bamboo in her birthing den.

It is so very pleasant weather wise outside right now. We were sitting out on the deck. If there would have been just the slightest breeze, we would have stayed out there longer.

Costume Lady said...

I would think that if Mei were pregnant, she would be showing more and more signs of pregnancy, but it sounds like she is showing less and less. I sure hope I'm wrong! I keep remembering how much we enjoyed Squiggles (ZZ) and we would think of Mei's baby as "our own". I wasn't on here when Tai was born.

MITS said...

THANKS, JO FOR PUTTING UP TODAY'S UPDATE ON MEI....HERE ARE THE LASTEST URINE REPORTS.......

August 4

We have collected and analyzed five samples produced between 1 p.m. yesterday and 6:32 this morning. The progestin concentrations range from 27.2 to 33.3ng/mg Cr. The three additional samples collected yesterday provided a mean progestin value of about 32 ng/mg Cr. The two samples collected today had a mean progestin concentration of about 29 ng/mg Cr.

The progestin concentrations the past couple of days are the lowest since the onset of the secondary rise began in mid-June. Although lower than samples collected just a few days ago, these latest data are still slightly higher than the baseline range pf progestin values, so additional analyses will be needed to conclude an end to the luteal phase.
I AM THINKING THE END IS NEAR

AML...sorry we weren't chatting when you came on. We've not been very chatty today.
Are you getting your affairs with the unemployment office straightened out? You should be able to collect a check for nearly a year. I hope it works out that way for you.

Mema Jo said...

Anne - I take it your company has left and was it Disney where they were headed.

Norma's company should also be leaving soon or may have already.

Costume Lady said...

Paula, that'll teach me to double check post's author. I think I did that once before, not long ago.

MITS said...

yes Lynn saw most of it, fell asleep right before the end....pandas can be very vocal and if we have a cub it is very noisy, because it is blind and hairless, so it is usually cold and hungry

Costume Lady said...

Cute, Jo. I am disappointed that it wasn't JIM'S poem. I thought he was getting a softer side.

Costume Lady said...

Helen, do you ever wish you could go out with the boats as you are watching them?

MITS said...

yes Wanda, I do, but if I went out the 20 or 30 miles they go, I want to be in a big 65+ plus foot boat, and don't no anyone who has one:)....GOT SOME THINGS TO DO BEFORE I LEAVE TOMORROW, SO, GOODNIGHT EVERYONE don't despair yet, we still have a chance for a panda, she still is in the luteal phase, but not much longer

Mema Jo said...

Good Night Mits

No Frodo or Frieda tonight!
Guess Anne went on to bed...
Guess Margie is napping before work..

Good Night in a little while...

Hi Eagle Buds,
Just getting back from water balloons and squirt gun fun in Morgan County. Made sure the grandson saw the Moon, his comment:
"It's Empty." Ha! Compared to the full moon we watched three weeks ago, he's got it right!

Saw ISS - just exactly right on time. It was nice and bright again, like Jupiter, and I lost it in either the clouds, or it did what it has done before, lost the angle from the sun. I have to say, it looked like it was a little "DUI" - slowing down, meandering off a straight path, then back to normal again...hmmmm -I have seen that before with the iridium cell phone satellites...crazy crazy..
ISS back again Tuesday night, will post the times, angle and directionals tomorrow morning.
Tubby Time! I'm soaking wet!

paula eagleholic said...

This is what you get...

3.8.2008 White-tailed Eagle attacked the smallest chick 09:09. After a minute the eagle left the nest.

MITS said...

I know usually they have Mei on cam 1 and Tai/Tian on cam 2, but maybe they have been instructed to keep her on both cams, at least she is in the den where we can't see the flashing light.

MITS said...

that is exactly correct, Paula, over in European countries they do the day-month-year, over here we do the month-day year, so the attack was yesterday

magpie said...

Oh, Paula, not good..just opened up the site, one chick there...any idea of condition or injury or anything?

Mema Jo said...

Suzanne had sent pics out today and had included the comments from the
'ENGLISH' blog. All 3 chicks were in her pics as far as I can remember.
Mits or Deb can you confirm that?
All 3 chicks are ok......

paula eagleholic said...

I don't know, Magpie. I asked for more info...

Mema Jo said...

The 2 older chick at Finny 2008 site have fledged. I think the one in the nest now is the youngest one.

MITS said...

affirmative, Jo:)

paula eagleholic said...

I asked if that was the 3rd chick in the nest...But I see Mits has confirmed that....I haven't been watching...

paula eagleholic said...

LOL, Duh, I'm sure Bob is asleep by now...

Good Grief on Finneys. I assume the one in the nest is the youngest since they say other 2 have fledged. Seems to be OK, but hard to tell. I clicked on some of the other graphic icons, but they're mostly ads.

That was something to see the eagles, totally unexpected. The first one I saw flying, thought it was going to be a hawk, then I thought, that isn't a hawk, its a juvie. I didn't even have my camera turned on. I saw another one when we were in Wyoming, near town of Beulah. The elk were something to see, though, they were so big!

magpie said...

Yah - those Elk looked Huge!
Did you see any Magpies?

Guess I'd best say good night, working dayshift Tuesday...

Take Care and Prayers, All...

deb said...

No magpies, I think the noise keeps a lot of birds hidden during the rally.

I am off to bed, too, have to get switched back from mountain to central time. It's only an hour, but goofs me up still.

I'll pop in before osprey watching tomorrow.

movin said...

"Jim Until they come down closer to you - it is hard not to see that there isn't a White Tail or Head! I was disappointed to say the least.."

Mema Jo,
I didn't tell it too well. While there are Bald Eagles that winter at Big Bear Lake in the San Bernardino Mountains, we also have Golden Eagles in various regions of the So Cal mountains, and in the cases of mistaken identity I mentioned, it was the Golden variety I was thinking of.

The Red-tail was pretty high, but not so high that I would have missed the white head and tail for very long.

Checked Finland nest before shut down & saw poor baby from side & front. Posted pics on here.

movin said...

I just opened Frodocam as well as our blog, and I "think" we have a pic of Frieda on the wall at last.

She's facing inboard either trying to pick a nesting site on the ledge or waiting for Frodo to mate with her.

I've got a pic I'll email to you on my list ... you can send it to others.

The bird is not moving a lot so I can make a more positive ID, but I think it's bigger and heavier than Frodo.

I see what you mean, NN, but I'm not sure if it's injury or sleeping-cooling.
I'll keep an eye on it for a while.

There was an attack by a White-tailed Eagle a couple of days ago, but I thought it was just an intrusion because it didn't stay long and the eyass didn't look injured.

Maybe another attack, maybe not. Also, it could have fledged and hurt its wing....

I looked at the comments, but I did not see notice of the Update on Buddy, so I'm putting a "bluie link" below... A blood test they sent in to determine the eaglet's sex came back "male," you can read it in the preface.

Re: The littlest Finny.

The mother and all chicks were in the nest earlier, but all are gone now except the littlest one.

He changed position, had his head up looking toward the camera; and he still looks alert and has some food in his crop.

However, at that angle you can see the tip of the left wing sticks out at a strange angle and is probably broken.

I think it will die unless humans in the area intervene.

I swear I saw it yesterday after the report of the attack, and I could not see any evidence of it being injured at that time.

I don't know if it was attacked again, or what might have happened to cause the injury.

His head is down again now. Very sad.

Finnish chick moved again, and I can see the left wing clearer.

I'm afraid it looks as though the bone is broken all the way through near the "shoulder" and the wing is separated and hanging. I can see some of the bone protruding from the shoulder area.

The chick's eyes are still bright, but he can't survive without man's intervention.

Margy, don't know how long it was there but something just told me to look! BEAUTIFUL SIGHT THIS MORNING!

I saw ISS last night here in Bedford. I could see it a lot longer here than Bluefield. We are kind of up on a mountain here and not much to block the view like the trees at home.

magpie said...

ISS was nice...did it "disappear" on you, or just fade out of the sky?
Did you think it was a little "DUI" - halting, meandering a little?
How about the crescent moon!

Oh, I am so glad we saw the adult this morning! Been a long time, no Eagles...
