Hi Everyone!!! Been downloading camera from DC trips the last 2 days.Daughter didn't bring a camera, so we're transferring to her work laptop. The Natural History Butterfly Garden was sort of a disappointment for $6. Very small compared to Brookside Gardens at Wheaton Regional Park.I would highly recommend that butterfly spot to anyone visiting the Montgomery County, MD area.
Today will be CRAB DAY!!!!!

West Virginia Magazine for September 2008 has an article and pictures on Caterpillars and Butterflies, and a separate article on "For Love of Lepidoptera" - regarding a couple who met throuth their love of butterflies, got married at the WV Monarch Butterfly State Festival last year, and are the owners of AH-HA Buttefly Ranch in Ritchie County, WV..

I'll check out the website and post it...once I see if the articles are posted...

DANA: I think, was it you? that talked about a friend named Lynn that was going to re-open her hair salon place on Route 9?
In today's Martinsburg Journal, on the very back page of section F -
is a story and picture...

If not DANA, maybe someone else remembers who...?

Mema Jo said...

Nilla (Janet Kolb) was the one who mentioned the salon opening.

MEMA - thanks...
I'll probably send her an email in case she doesn't see the BLOG -
You are the Woman!

Don't know how long it will last, but a really cool shot of a shadow Osprey with egg smack in the middle of the shadow at WW Osprey..

Well, maybe not...Jo, would you able to send that info along?
Not finding the email info in the Momsters Members listings..

GOOD MORNING, ALL, ON THIS BEAUTIFUL SATURDAY MORNING.

Up again and breakfasted. [:~D] Am sipping on my cup of Folgers Freeze Dried... Nothing but the class drinks for this boy.

You've "got to try" some strawberry jam on an Old-fashioned chocolate donut that you've heated 15-17 secs. in the microwave.

So Cal weather is like a beautiful, full-color copy of the last couple of weeks... 69° and humid now, rising to a humid 82° this afternoon.

JIM - You are a CUISINE afficianado..How is the Oatmeal coming along? I used to mix it with apple butter for my nephew, everyone went EEYOU, BUT HE LIKED IT!

GOOD SUNNY CALIFORNIA MORNING TO YOU! AND GOOD SUNNY WEST VIRGINIA AFTERNOON TO YOU TOO.

Mema Jo said...

Jim - you really started your day out with the "sweets"! That should keep you going for quite a while!

movin said...

I see Finney's youngest is on the nest in the dusk. She probably won't migrate today.

Did you see the pic I put on the blog earlier where she was eating a fish she had brought into the nest herself?? At least Suzanne and I, perhaps others, had been wondering if she had learned to fish yet; and I'm sure she hadn't until recently.

She is now. (;~)}

movin said...

Yeah.... "Gourmet all the way" is my way. Hahahaha.

I was drinking my coffee and suddenly remembered I had about 1 1/2 donuts from a couple of days ago in an unused kitchen cannister. So I grabbed approx. 3/4 of one and popped it in the micro. Came out just about like fresh, and "yes," the jam is a good tasting touch with the chocolate.

Jim

magpie said...

I BET RASPBERRY JAM WOULD BE NICE TOO..EXPECIALLY IF THE DOUGHNUT IS REALLY CHOCOLATEY..

I saw your pic, JIM, overnight I was watching, bird seemed to be in the nest food-less, then a couple of refreshes later, there seemed to be food...I thought maybe one of the parents had made a drop in- between refreshes....be nice if she IS FISHING on her own...she's a brave little soul to bring it that nest!

TTFN - got work to do...xo

magpie said...

Hooded Crow in the Water Finney Nest..haven't seen them for awhile!

movin said...

Thanks, Magpie.

But in this case, the nest was empty, and she arrived with her food suddenly, began mantling and turning in all directions and screeching.

Then she proceeded to eat her fish. I don't think it was too large, because I couldn't see much of it, but she continued to feed for several minutes.

movin said...

Oh, another thing at the Finnish nest...

After I had posted that link I mentioned and had already shut down the blog, I started shutting down the rest of them.

When I got to Finney's nest, I could see a White-tailed eagle perched in a tree, which must be very near the nest tree. It was visible just above the nesting material toward the right side of the nest.

... And the chick was no longer in the nest.

I'm sure that breed of eagle steals fish from Ospreys in flight too, like our beloved Bald Eagles do. Probably what it was attempting to do.

movin said...

Not much at Lock Garten, and in fact they're showing a bird feeder now, which is being raided by a young Red Squirrel...

Guess they have GPS on the eyasses and are beginning to report positions ... they have both left the nest area.

magpie said...

Yes, Jim - Nethy and Deschar are south in the UK now, Deschar flew way out over the water and circled right back to land, Nethy is ahead of him...not sure if they have all the Google stuff ready on them or not...

Interesting about the Perched White-Tailed at Finney's Nest...
Makes me want to park at this computer all day and all night, but it is good that we can all share reports with each other!

Do you have the Puleston site that Paula posted about a week or so ago?
If not, here it is: You can go everywhere on it:

Good Update on CaringBridge regarding Mason Ellsworth today..was going to post some of it but computer resisted..
He has a brother visiting from Colorado, whose wife is a massage therapist, nice oily/fragrant massage therapy made EVERYONE happy. Cat Scan overnight was the best one yet. Details on the site.

Sylvia went to see Mason this A.M. and Carla, the nurse for today, said he had a good night and his cat scan was the best to date. The ventricle tubes are looking more like they should, meaning swelling is way down. He probably won't have the shunt implanted Monday since they are still waiting for results of the cultures from the CSF.

Sylvia's brother Andrew from Colorado was here with his wife who is a massage therapist and she did a little work on Mason. The fragrant oils she uses takes away the normal hospital smell out of his room which is a welcome change. The nurses like it too.

Tomorrow will be a busy day. Hopefully Lisa and Andrea will be up to sing for Mason, my brother Grant and his wife should be up as well and AAngel Ashley will up to see Mason so she can give you one of her reports.

Love Brian and Sylvia

magpie said...

MITS -
Thanks for posting that about Mason. I had prepared to do the same thing, got "WebPage cannot be displayed," then Eagle Cam went black, and I thought I had crashed the whole FWS site! Boy, I was nervous...I think I just coincidentally was having connection problems at the same time.

It IS good news, isn't it?

xo

magpie said...

MEMA: About your question, yes, our 5 pm Mass is well-attended...typically the Sunday morning 11 o'clock Mass is the "Cry Mass" - all the little ones come to that one.
Tonight, the Knights of Columbus from surrounding counties attended in formal wear: with spouses, everyone looked so Regal...

Good Saturday Evening to All..xo

I think it is light play:
That isn't an Eagle tail at about 12 o'clock in our nest, is it????

There is a beautiful "thousand-legger" been in my kitchen sink all afternoon, I won't kill him but I hope he finds his way out of there...or else, I will help him get outside..

Have had a problem with "earwigs" since springtime....I do NOT allow them to continue residency in the apartment though....

magpie said...

Okay, Paula...just wishful gazing I guess...we are DUE for a visit...
Yes, dry is right, thought we would get some rain this week-end..things are turning brown...
Nice to "see" you again.

MITS said...

it is great news.....Margy....here is hoping for a full recovery for Mason....Does anyone know any details about his accident...like how did it happen, and where...? GOOD NIGHT EVERYONE TTUT:)

magpie said...

I saw an American kestrel perched on a utility line the other day in Harpers Ferry. Nice! Friends who live down along the river in Jefferson County say they have had an Eagle nest, inhabited, this year and other years, first I ever heard of it...don't think they know too much about it, or whether there were any chicks or not...they are down Engle Molers Road in a place called "Happy Hollow." About 3 or 4 miles probably down river from NCTC.

magpie said...

MITS - It happened on a road called Country Club Road in Jefferson County on a rainy afternoon, Mason was in a GMC Suburban, and I think, lost control, and head-onned I think into a dump truck...

MITS said...

oh dear....that is terrible....were you working , are you in a different county...?

magpie said...

It was in Jefferson County, I work in Berkeley....next county west of Jefferson...

Costume Lady said...

Hello...
I have never read the details of Mason's accident. It surely must have been in the journal, but I must have missed it.
Margy, my grandson, Brandon, whom you met, sent a photo of an Oriole he saw in his yard yesterday along with the remnants of it's nest. Such a beauty! Have posted it on "Wild and Wonderful". I can't imagine him not seeing it before now if it nested in that tree.

Also...GeeGee called a few hours ago and you and she are the grandparents of a fluttering butterfly. She was so excited. Will send photo tomorrow.

Skins aren't doing diddly squat tonight. CANDY...your Panthers are really hot tonight.

COSTUME LADY:
GeeGee is a Mom! (Again) - How wonderful! Now, to name the baby !

Also, I just checked out Wild and Wonderful..that oriole is spectacular! And all the other new pictures on there. Denise looks like a Free Spirit...

I enjoyed talking with Brandon and really wanted to have more Bird Talk with him... he says he wants to see a Painted Bunting someday! Can't blame him, they are stunning!

Not sure, but I think I read the accident account in a couple of different newspapers.

In an instant, how quickly things can happen....

Morning is beginning to break in Finland....

The thousand-legger has escaped!

magpie said...

The chick is at Finney's nest. Getting hard to call that big bird a "Chick." Especially if it is a Guy, which I think it is....no names for these birds, are there?

Waiting on the Sea Eagles at the Water nest next...

hedgie said...

Well, pooh....my Skins stank tonight. I have a headache because of it! Going to bed to sulk!! Goodnight fowl friends. Busy day tomorrow...taking gg's school clothes shopping..going to try to get an early start so I can get back home and relax...gotta rest up for Monday...SIL has apptmt at DC VA hosp. I remain designated driver and patient advocate. Night all.

Costume Lady said...

That is a beauty of a CHICK in the Finny nest, Margy. No, they have no names. That is how Finny got started. Suz and I were glued to that nest last year and we began to call the baby "Finny". His sibling never hatched...it was an ugly egg,it looked like it had mildew and moss on it. I think the egg was removed and examined, but I don't recall any news given to us. It was probably petrified by the time they got it and also, there were no reports in English like they have now.

Costume Lady said...

Capt. Gene got home this afternoon with umpteen stories to tell me. Sounded like the guys had a fun week. It's so good to have him home.
