Hi Steve!!! How ya been? We been worrying about you!! I think Thelma and magpie saw someone this morning, an adult I think.

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

Was going to ask you the same thing, Steve.

paula eagleholic said...

Sunny saw an adult on the river...but we haven't seen a juvie since last week, I believe.

Thanks for the link for Mason, Megan. Have it bookmarked now.

Just signing in for the afternoon... Thanks Steve for the new thread..

Steve - The adults have been sighted early early morning hours and sometimes Liberty (male adult) comes in the nest late afternoon. We'll
try to pass the word that when we get pics of them to send also to you.

Meagan will keep Mason in my prayers asking God to let him wake up and get better.

Well, I think I just posted my photo of Frieda on the Frodo Forum, and now let's see if I can post it from Photobucket to here directly.

No, it didn't work directly. So far, I have to go through the usual step of creating a bluie link; but here is the first known picture of Frieda this year ... enjoying her lunch while standing in her new nest "scrape" or depression.

Sad news out of Pelican Harbor "Santa Cruz" A 65 Skye has died.

movin said...

Thanks, Glo. I was just planning to post that link.

It's very sad that Skye, the PH eaglet which suffered the broken wing in the attack on the nest, has been found dead.

But in the same Update there is news of another immature possibly sighted, which they thought had died over the water in 2006.

I was really pulling for A-64 and A-65 to make it after their traumatic falls from their nest and the subsequent treatment.

Hello...everyone, back from zoo, very busy...lots of media coverage, but things went smoothly.

glo said...

Yes Jim it is sad news as we got to know and watch 64 and 65 and yearn for their recovery and long life. Spirit does well and yes indeed it does appear there is more good news aobut I think its a 3 year old they thought had been lost and dead who showed up alive and well. Nature is well difficult to understand.

Mema Jo said...

Thanks for the link concerning A65
You just never know what fates are waiting for our juvies - Thankfulness for the ones that fly high and live free!

Jim the picture of Frieda is really great and I'm glad all on here will see it. You mentioned you had sent it to John/Greg - so hopefully their blogs will have it.

magpie said...

The news is sad for Skye, my heart goes out to all the IWS staff. It's so difficult to learn of it, but thanks, Glo, for letting us know.

This is a neat siteThe butterfly big year Robert Michael Pyle hung up his word processor at the end of 2007 and set out in his trusty 1982 Honda, to find as many American and Canadian butterfly species as he could in a single year. To keep Orion abreast, Bob promised to mail us tidbits from the trail and occasionally give us a call. Twice a month throughout 2008, we post Bob's notes from the road. His is a journal unlike anything else you've seen online.

magpie said...

Thanks, JIM, for the post of Frieda...pretty little nest, beautiful bird, with a little chow in there for a snack...

floralgirl: that's a charmer, that site, someday I think DEB will do something like this!

Thanks for sending it on to us...

magpie said...

MITS - thanks for the detailed though disappointing update on the maternity situation for Mei, and as you said, she's most likely just fine, it's the rest of us that are all torn up! She seems to have the best team working with and for her, including YOU.

xo

Skies don't look promising for the 5-planet night...they'll be out there, but I don't think I'll be able to see them...

I'm still gonna yell for Mason at 9 pm...

Good Evening to All...

MITS said...

Margy, Mei is doing wonderful, she looked fantastic, and I am so very proud of the zoo staff...they work really hard, and even though, it did not turn out the way they would have liked, it brought more info to them....it is always a learning experience when you are working with animals....BTW, the red pandas were out today and they were just beautiful, since I was the only volunteer on the trail today, did not make it to check on the other animals on the trail

MITS said...

what a neat site, Megan.....how was DC yesterday?

paula eagleholic said...

Looks like rain at our nest...

Better hurry up and walk my dogs!

magpie said...

Yes, Paula, we are getting a nice rain here, near the nest. Hooray!!
Our garden is soooo dry. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!

FINAL REPORT FROM THE ZOO, RE: MEI XIANG
August 13
Zoo staff confirmed today that Mei Xiang will not give birth to a cub this year. They believe that she experienced either a pseudopregnancy or the loss of a developing fetus. In a pseudopregnancy, an animal's hormonal changes and behaviors are identical to a pregnancy, but no conception occurred. Fetal loss during early pregnancy is a common occurrence in mammals, but the reasons for this phenomenon are poorly understood.

As you read in these updates, Zoo scientists, veterinarians, and keepers were closely watching Mei Xiang, assessing her hormone levels and behavior and conducting weekly ultrasounds in an attempt to determine if she was pregnant. Veterinarians noted small changes in Mei Xiang's uterus but they were unable to confirm the presence of a fetus. Giant panda fetuses are very small—a newborn cub is only five inches long. At other zoos, fetuses have been visible on ultrasound only in the last weeks before birth.

In mid-July Mei Xiang's urinary progesterone levels (a hormone associated with pregnancy) began to decline. In pregnant pandas, declining hormones and increased maternal behaviors signal an impending birth. This year, Mei Xiang's hormones declined as expected, but the decline lasted longer than normal and she continued to show maternal behavior even after her hormones reached baseline. The Zoo's scientists and veterinarians speculate that Mei Xiang may have experienced the loss of an early-stage fetus that failed to develop normally, and it was absorbed into the lining of the uterus. In the coming days, we expect Mei to return to "normal," both hormonally and behaviorally, experiencing an increase in appetite and activity level.

Last night, Mei showed very little maternal behavior. The volunteers recorded only 46 minutes of Kong toy cradling in two sessions, one lasting 12 minutes and one lasting 34 minutes. Otherwise, there were no other behaviors observed last night. This morning Mei was very alert and curious about the activities of the keeper staff. After an ultrasound and some bamboo, Mei slept in her den the rest of the day. We observed only a few minutes of paw licking today.

We will return to our normal schedule tomorrow. Mei will go outside again, and we will return to analyzing urine samples on a weekly basis instead of daily.

We offer our sincerest gratitude to everyone for supporting our program this year. We could not have operated so smoothly without everyone's effort. Special thanks to all the dedicated FONZ volunteers on our 24-hour watch who recorded Mei Xiang's behaviors.

Our staff are recognized leaders in the study of giant panda reproduction. Each year, hormone analysis, behavior observations, and ultrasound technology help us learn more about pregnancy and pseudopregnancy, and may show us how common fetal loss is for giant pandas.

Thanks to everyone who has been following the pregnancy watch along with us. While we all would have been thrilled to welcome a baby giant panda this year, we have learned a great deal about this fascinating species and hope you have too. We are happy to have three healthy pandas, and enjoy providing you with a window into the world of our pandas and show how we care for them and work to conserve this endangered species.

We encourage panda fans to support our conservation efforts by making a donation to the Giant Panda Conservation Fund.

floralgirl said...

Whoops, walked away to fill the hummer feeders- thunderstorm coming at us now. DC was slow , but I did ok, sold about what I usually do. My flower pic is a moonvine flower- they open at dusk, and smell wonderful. I was outside watching a sphinx moth flting around hitting my nicotiana and cleome and 4 o'clock flowers, tried to get a pic, but it's too dark out there now, and he is fast.

NatureNut said...

Good Evening Eagle Buds. We got juice!!Electricity went out at Park yesterday 10-3 & when I got home was out there too!!! Funny, I didn't see any storms!
Oh, so sorry about Skye. We watched those sweet birds recover from their falls, & now this. :>(
Glad the missing eaglet was seen!
Since was lovely weather yesterday & no juice, no phone!!!!!, I got to go outside--took pics of butterfly garden & after work hiked & went around our Nature Study boardwalk loop thru the marsh. Got pics of mostly wildflowers. Will post probably TH--day off. Yippee!
Gonna check out Frodo info.
And Sissy has to be our resident panda, since there won't be new cub!!

floralgirl said...

Dang it, those storms went right by us- lots of wind and little rain- now I'm gonna have to water heavily tomorrow..groan....

hubby is off to Atlanta, think the next time he goes I will go with him and check out there zoo.

Mema Jo said...

Storm hasn't gotten over South Mountain yet to the valley..
I really hope it does make it - it's getting dry.

Megan - Does the moonvine also have
a deep purple variety?
Thanks for the site for Mason. Keeping him in my prayers. 9:00 tonight I'll send positive vibes to him to awaken him.

Loretta - pics forth coming - please name the wild flowers for us. I see so much along roadsides that I don't know their names. Thanks.

Costume Lady said...

Loretta, is your Butterfly garden at work or at your home? Butterflies and wild flowers....all wild, free, and beautiful! Anxious to see your photos. How's the tooth?

floralgirl said...

Nope, moonvine flower is only white, ipomoea alba, but it is in the morning glory family, and there are many colors of those. It is very fragrant, each flower lasts one night.

Costume Lady said...

Jo, I love wild flowers. There is nothing like seeing a patch of flowers along the road or up a mountainside that was put there by Mother Nature. We saw so many beautiful wild flowers on our trip in March...only knew what a few were. Brought some home and planted them but they all died except a cactus. It bloomed for me, a most beautiful pink flower.

magpie said...

Hope someone sees the planets....total cloud cover here..

...sigh...

maybe tomorrow night....

Costume Lady said...

Megan, does the Moon Flower come up by itself each year or do you have to replant it?

floralgirl said...

Thanks, Jo- if anyone is gonna be in Sheptown Sunday, Betty's is having a fudraising event for Mason, from 8-2:30- as Margy mentioned yesterday.

floralgirl said...

Wanda, if you want to grow moonvine just ask me next spring, I always grow them for myself and to sell. It is an annual here, plant it in mid May.

paula eagleholic said...

Poor little Skye...at least he got a taste of freedom....

It's a sad but true fact that 50% of eagles don't survive their first year...and the stats are worse for osprey...

Costume Lady said...

Will do, Megan. Thanks. I have heard their fragrance is wonderful...will try it.

floralgirl said...

We grow moonvine, cardinal climber vine and spanish flag vine all together at our front door,(you can google picks of the last two) they are climbing together on the house and deck rail and strings hubby strung all over. Those of you who want to see lots of hummers need to grow cardinal cliber, it just needs something to climb on.

Costume Lady said...

I got a call from Karla yesterday and Dustin had his examination by a group of doctors from UVHospital, who came to Winchester hospital to check him out. They are happy with his progress and said his heart is almost back to normal. They are letting him do moderate activities now, but want to see him again in December. All this from a little tick!

deb said...

Paula, Jane told us the survival rate for osprey was as bad as 70%. So far we have 19 alive and well. Two of the three birds that went to the Raptor Center are on the way back tonight and can be released tomorrow. Sadly the third had a very serious fungal infection and the best thing for the chick was to be euthanized. All 15 birds that have been released have been spotted, so that is good news for now.

Costume Lady said...

You have quite an array of wildlife in your yard. Lucky girl. I think we will have to call you Mother Nature Girl.

floralgirl said...

Here's a pic of what the tobbaco sphinx moth caterpillar looks like.

deb said...

I have been with the osprey today, Wanda, with an eagle visitor. First time I have been afraid to see an eagle. It is a three year old and it landed in the osprey's favorite tree. There were 4 chicks in the tree and I held my breath the whole time. I followed the eagle in my pick-up to make sure it left, so we could all relax. There wouldn't be anything we could do, just watch nature happen in front of us. Luckily, we didn't have to endure that! This is the third visit, but today was the first time it spooked the chicks and, also, the first time a biologist wasn't there. Bob, another volunteer, and I were alone.

Costume Lady said...

Megan that looks like the tomato worm. Is it?

Costume Lady said...

Glad you didn't have to witness another bit of mother nature, Deb.
I'll bet your heart was pounding hard!

deb said...

It was jumping, Wanda. Bob was talking with a visitor, when I flew for my binoculars. He said it was just a heron, I said, that's no heron! Then I just said, please go away. I missed some good pictures, because I was so worried, got it just as it was leaving.

ceil said...

I was late but shouted twice to catch up with the other calls. Clear here can see the moon and only one planet so far. Going to light a candle for Mason.

magpie said...

CEIL - the other planets have already "set" - basically, all the planets are pretty much in the same "elliptic" as the moon...so those other four were out all day moving across the sky from Southeast to Southwest..Mars is sometimes a little more out of line than the others...
Enjoy Jupiter and Luna for me, can't see a thing here...

Mema Jo said...

Deb I hope you are trying to keep an ongoing journal of all these events! Well really your whole summer has been eventful for you.
I suppose all your photos are really your journal!

magpie said...

How's Patrick and Ryan getting along?

Mema Jo said...

We have gotten some rain but like Megan's area it wasn't enough to do much good to the dry earth!

deb said...

Jane has a journal going and then my pictures are going to be added to it, along with hers. This weekend is Riverboat Days and the river will be swamped with people, but after that we are going to start on a powerpoint presentation.

MITS said...

Deb, I'm so happy for you, you can just tell how much you are enjoying it, thru your posts

MITS said...

well hopefully, Atlanta will have a cub, it won't be the same, as the National Zoo is set up with their cams for the best viewing with sound and 24/7 coverage for the first couple of months, but better luck next year, if they decide they will do it again....time is running out for Mei and Tian, as their 10-year loan to the zoo expires in 2010

MITS said...

you are perfect for it, and isn't it funny how some things just present themselves to us and you have to grab at the chance:)

deb said...

If things go ok tomorrow, I will get to go up in the tower. Keep your fingers crossed. Heights and I don't really get along, but I am going up that ladder at all costs. The only time I will really need to look down is when we come down out of the tower, maybe by then I will be too excited to get dizzy!

MITS said...

hey Sissy....how goes it...you will be just fine, Deb:)

paula eagleholic said...

Deb - an opportunity of a lifetime! Enjoy!

I would get up in the middle of the night to check in on him and Mei. Deb I am so glad you have been able to experience what not to many people are able to see. Thank you I so enjoy hearing about the osprey.

I was reading the enries in Mason's guestbook and this one made me smile:

Mason was probably five or so and he ended up in my mom's dance class. He was such a creative kid that he had no problem running around the room with all the girls and trying to turn fast and point his toes. There was one catch, though, to his dance class career. He refused to enter the classroom without a yellow 'cape' (or large piece of yellow cloth). I'm not really sure how mom figured out his love for the yellow cape but once he knew the cape existed that was it. No cape, no dance class. For the performance at the end of the year he was mr. sun and all the girls were flowers. He had a ball running around the stage in the cape giving them all sunlight.

I'm still thinking about all of you and sending as much positive energy your way as I can. Give Mason a poke (or a hug) for me, k?

Hey all! the August moon is the corn moon or the Full Sturgeon Moon - The fishing tribes are given credit for the naming of this Moon, since sturgeon, a large fish of the Great Lakes and other major bodies of water, were most readily caught during this month. A few tribes knew it as the Full Red Moon because, as the Moon rises, it appears reddish through any sultry haze. It was also called the Green Corn Moon or Grain Moon.

Yes, NORMA, along with the joys of retirement, comes problems too. It seems everything happens at once. We need 3 new patio windown (they have fogged up), all new windows on the lower level, front porch redone, new carpet, bathrooms redone and to top it all off, my car died!! So glad I have you all to keep my mind busy.

MITS said...

NORMA....I watched him all the time.....:)

Mema Jo said...

I think I am dreaming - or just confused about my question on the pop up cam. I know Blackwater & Brisbane have pop ups.. If you have them up and start to type or change sites - they do go down. I think I have confused the Pop Up with the Live Feed Real Player! Sorry!
Would be nice though if the Pop Up could be programed to do that!

floralgirl said...

Whoa- pop up cam is cool:)

hedgie said...

Well, how cool is that pop-up cam? Didn't notice it when I first logged on! Thanks for telling us, gals. Jo, I can't get it to stay up either, but if I just put the cursor on it, it shows minimized the same way live feed did.

normabyrd said...
