Update
Well, it's almost February and it seems like our birds are spending more time at the nest. It's 2:30 PM on a bright sunny day and there they are. We're suspecting that there could soon be some action here. We'll be watching, as I'm sure you folks will as well. We are also getting close to starting up the live video and audio feed. Should know more next week. This will be funded through your efforts and the Friends of the NCTC.
More soon.

Can't believe they are on the job this late...
I'll be interested to see the pics tomorrow...I just looked at the other owl pictures
Back!!!
It was the eagle in the nest
it flew out.
Now it is the owl
this is the owl
I think the first bird before the eagle was the owl...too quick for a pic...but the ears were rather distinct.
Hi all. Did I miss anything? Looks like no sleepover in our next tonight. Darn, I though for sure Belle was going to stay.
Okay, which part of the nest are we looking in.
I wish they would come and scare it away.
I see the owl....his eyes were almost glowing
Okay, I am blinding myself trying to see an owl in that nest.
shooo....shoooo...go away!!!!!
It looked toward the cam, you culd see it's eyes glowing
Sharon, right to the right of the smaller trunk, you can see it moving
To the right of the limb closest to the cam...inbetween the trunk and the limb, sharon.
I am looking.......
Danelle - this is streaming video, don't know it you can it...we are watching an owl in the NBG eagles nest
http://www.wvec.com/cams/eagle.html
What site are you all on?
It's that thing in the very center of the picture that looks like a stump...
Thanks!
Just turned it's head again
Yeah, my connection is not fast enough.
You can see it even better if you right click on picture and full screen it.
Oh, yes, I can see it now. THANK YOU FOR MOVING THE CAMERA!
You can see the wind blowing his feathers.
I saw the little varmint MOVE!!!
Did you see him Sharon?
Paula - The Zoomers (staff)
I think some work from their homes
I could be totally wrong - I need to read back & find out.
Where is that info, Jo? I also saw names posted on another forum as well.
Hmmm...Wonder if we can get another new camera next year and Steve could set us up as zoomers!
Zooming in
They are trying so hard to get a better shot of the owl.
zoomed back...why that little #@#$%##
They zoomed in on the owl.. but still hard to see it clearly..
We could sit down at the sycamore tree in the Eagle Express and Zoom, zzzzzzzZooooom.
Did you know they have a chat room set up?
I think GLO FTLOE may have the full article about the zoomers. I remember that she had all their names...
GLO may have gotten it from the ME Forum....... I'll check out later & put a link on here.
Who is going up there with me to get that owl transferred to another part of town? It just can't take over that eagle nest.
WHOA! Zooming big time.
I saw wings........
Paula, check your email.
I THOUGHT I SAW IT FLY UP ONTO ANOTHR BRANCH TO THE RIGHT
Was that cool or what?
yes, Paula, I knew about the chat room, when I went there last night to find out if anyone was seeing the eagle when my sister and I were watching, nobody, home and I really do not like chat rooms JMHO, to many people talking over each other...
WHOAAAAA REALLY DARK ONCE AGAIN... IS IT STILL THERE TO DARK TO SEE
I didn't go into their chat room yet
I bet they're hollering at that owl in that chat room.........
DGIF is in the chat room now, it is a Great Horned Owl
I'll go with you Candy, I love Norfolk. Lived there a short time when my Dad was in the Navy. We go there often on our way to Va. Beach.
Well it is too dark to see anything now again. He had just better be passing by and move on.
I didn't want to register right now
Paula My brain is burned because I
missed my snack time....
Who or What is DGIF
Could the eagles be able to drive it off??? Would they fight to save the nest as there own??
The people who do the blog for NBG
We need to be a "relocator" and relocate that owl some other end of the USA.
Department of Game and Inland Fisheries
%$^$%^@^@ blogger cop!!! Now i wonder would the eagles be able to drive the owl out of the nest if they both try?
About the KENT NEST; just a moment before it got dark, in the very middle of the nest, there was a figure that looked like an eagle with white head showing up more than body. I'll check it tomorrow to see if there is an object there in the daylight.
My thoughts also, Nilla. Is an owl bigger than an eagle?
Kyle that was on here earlier said that when he lived in Florida, the Horned Owl would lay it's eggs in the eagle nest before the eagle and take over the nest.
BB in a bit.
I know what you are talking about, Wanda, it has fooled me a couple of times thinking it is an eagle at KENT.
I asked the DGIF guy your question, Nilla.
I really sont know but owls can get pretty big i in size Wanda.. guess we better google owls huh?lol
well I am all owled out...ttyt....GOOD NIGHT EVERYONE
Well, still no eagle in our nest either.
Click on this link & hopefully you'll see the video clip of the Horned Owl
I think that I am right behind you Mits. I am having a hard time keeping my eyes open. YOU ALL HAVE A PEACEFUL AND RESTFUL NIGHT. Tomorrow brings us a new day with new happenings. I hope I wake up and find that $#@&^%%owl gone for good.
GOOD NIGHT ALL.
No time right now PAULA ABOUT TO CLOSE AND GO HOME.. I am sure some one over there will answer it as maybe other people will wonder also... So with that i say Good Night to all... The Love Of Eagles in our hearts
Answer from DGIF guy-
I'm not sure how a competitive interaction would go, Great Horned Owls are tough birds - Great Horned owls regularly usurp Red-Tailed Hwk nests but I don't know about eagles
Thanks Jo. You sure to take care of us.
We probably know as much or more than him...I know they can take over and eagle nests, plus they like eggs. :(
GOOD NIGHT HELEN AND CANDY...
SLEEP TIGHT.
Thanks for asking the question Paula. Now we just have to pray that the owl for some reason like us praying that the owl just goes away. Leaves the nest and eagles at Norfolk alone.
From DGIF-
There are lots of popular reports about owl predation and usurpation of eagle nest - but no confirmed evidence
Great Horned Owls bred in the vicinity last year - and both the Eagles and owls coexisted
Mama or Dad BW was just turning the eggs.
Thanks for the info and the video, Paula and Jo. My sister called in the middle of the invasion, so I missed quite a bit of it.
DGIF guy says -
We'll have to wait and watch. Once the eagles lay eggs they will be more likely to defend the nest...may all depend on who wants the site more. It's actually a bit late for Great Horned Owls to be starting a brood so this bird may simply be using the nest as a perch while patroling territory or hunting. Owls nest in that area in December/January.
Here's some more info
Great horned owl
The Great Horned Owl will take large prey, even other raptorial birds. It regularly kills and eats other owls, and is an important predator on nestling Ospreys. The reintroduction of Peregrine Falcons has been hampered in some areas by owls killing both adult and nestling falcons.
I might have mixed up owls preying upon eagle nests with ospreys.
Well, let's hope the Great Horned Owl is only using the tree at Norfolk for an observation post at the moment.
Because I read somewhere (maybe Wikipedia) last year that GHO's are stronger and more aggressive than eagles, plus they can readily harass eagles at night; so if there is a definite takeover attempt by the owls, eagles will usually abandon the nest in question.
Jim
More info on owls here.

This old gal is NOT going to be any
Night Owl tonight!
Good Night Everyone
Peace to You & Yours
Prayers being said for all our needs
Good Morning Early Birds
Good article from your link, Paula.
I "think" the Norfolk nest might be safe, because of the time factor and the history of the area.
I wonder if this might be the reason Bald Eagles often spend a night or two in the nest BEFORE laying eggs...to test the safety of the nest against night predators.
Jim
Well, I'm back, and our nest is MT. Think I will turn in for the night. Good night all! Talk to you tomorrow.
Night Danelle have a good night. Say hello to Sandra for us. Hope to see you again on here.
Good point, Jim. The only information on eagle/owl interaction I have read is about the owls taking over an eagles nest...and perhaps an owl may attack an eagles nest for food...but nothing documented on the food thingy.
DGIF - I apologize for that earlier remark.
Good night, Mema Jo..rest easy.
Jim
May I ask what, or who, "DGIF" stands for, Paula?
Jim
Department of Game and Inland Fisheries - they write the Norfolk blog....click on the icon under the nest on the website.
That article on the takeover of the Iroquois eagle nest was also interesting, Paula, but it took place in 2004. I wonder if GHO's have permanently taken possession of it.
Jim
I don't know, Jim. The page seemed old, but did have some useful info.
Maybe not old, maybe just not in season....
Good night!
Night All at this time our nest is still MT.
There's a herd of elephants at near maximum range for the lens at Pete's Pond. They all filed into a large open area, and then they began some serious dust bathing, which is still going on.
Jim
Good night, Paula, Dana ... sleep well.
Jim
GOOD NIGHT EVERYONE
SLEEP TIGHT
GOOD NIGHT, EVERYONE/GOOD MORNING, SUZANNE AND THE BIRDERS EXTRAORDINAIRE.

INFO ON THE NORFOLK ZOOMERS FROM THE ME & FTLOE FORUMS:
Nancy in Va....One of the gals on the Maine forum has actually met and now recently talked with some folks working the cams at Norfolk.
Here is the current info as we
learn it.
"I talked with Reese Lukei thisafternoon and he is one of the camera operators for the NBG eagles. There are two others...Joe Foreman, as we all thought, and a third person (did not get a name) with access to the controls. Joe "zooms" for us from the Botanical Gardens and from his home as well.
Reese does most of his work with the cam from his home in Va. Beach via computer controls. He tells me that the 'fine tuning' is almost complete. This morning Joe Foreman whose photos we are all enjoying did in fact post on the Maine forum. Here is what else he had to say....
Perry Mathewes from NBG and Stephen Living, Watchable Wildlife Biologist from the Va. Department of Game and Inland Fisheries are two "Zoomers". So now we have some names to put with the awesome camera work we see coming out of Norfolk.
12:49 am We have an MT nest
Good Night
Wow, what awesome pictures and such good news from Steven on the blog! Yippee!!!
Good morning, world. Almost Friday! Beautiful bright quarter moon and gazillions of stars tonight, but not too cold. 25° in PA, 30° in VA. No wind, so it's really not too bad out.
I see our nest is MT. Was hoping Lib or Belle or both would be hanging out, but maybe they were there yesterday to stay out of the wind. Very windy going home yesterday! Had to really hold that steering wheel. Glad I wasn't driving an 18-wheeler!
I think Lord BW is on the eggs, but he's almost laying like the Lady does, so not really sure. But his wings are out, and she doesn't do that. Guess time will tell, have to watch for a switch.
Ok, all have a great eagle/panda day.
Eyes to the sky, see the raptors fly!
Egg turning time!
GOOD THURSDAY MORNING SUZANNE AND ALL WHO WILL FOLLOW! I just woke up a little early, so came out here to see if we had Belle in the nest. MT.
JO That was really interesting about our Zoomers......You were really up late last nigh! Did anyone else see anymore of the Horned Owl in the nest? All I get is black this am.
SUZANNE The Great Horned Owl was in the NBG nest again last night! It is said that they take over eagle nests, and we are all hoping that this one gets on it's way, far away from NBG
Well guess I'll try to get a little short nap before getting up for work.
Keep your eyes peeled.
Morning, Candy! Didn't expect to see you at this hour! Darn, that owl was back again? Some interesting reading about them, think Glo had it on the FeedBlitz. yes, they take over eagle's nests. Hope this one doesn't. They're not nearly as good parents as eagles! Wish the eagles would chase it, but guess they don't do that.
Have a good nap, hope you can get back to sleep. Hopefully I'll talk to you later before school.
FYI at SD today: At 10 there is a polar bear press conference between the SD Zoo and Polar Bears International. They are announcing the collaboration to bring zoos and conservationists together to try to save the Arctic bear. They are also going to give an enrichment toy to their polar bears. It will be on cam.
Morning, Suz, Candy...
[:~D]
I'm not feeling 100%, been up and down with the thing, and I should be down now.
Thought I would check in and say "Good morning" first though.
Did you read about the Great Horned Owl at the nest tree in Norfolk? Hope it is just using it temporarily for a hunting perch.
Have a great day, catch a lot of action on the cams.
Jim
Good morning, Jim. I sure hope you feel better! This year the colds and flu are really hanging on for a long time! Chicken soup, and lots of rest.
Didn't read about the owl from last night, but did see the pics and read about it the other night. Think this is the 2nd night in a row he's been in the nest! Eagles and owls have a time share for the sky, but sure hope these guys don't develop a time share for the eagles' nest!!!
Feel better, Jim, and sleep tight.
BW egg turning.
Just went downstairs, and someone asked me if I was gonna be in tomorrow, and I said of course. Then he told me the weather! Who knew? I didn't listen last night. Starting at midnight we're supposed to get sleet and freezing rain to pre-dawn hours, then freezing through mid-morning. They are expecting up to 1/4 inch of ice. So if we do get that, I will NOT be in in the morning! Absolutely do not drive in ice! Specially in the middle of the night! Guess I'll listen to the weather forcast tonight!
GOOD MORNING SUZ...
I see we have a visitor.
Must be Lib... he's in the Bedroom.
Suz must be busy....
WE HAVE AN EAGLE ALERT!! COME SEE SUZ!!!!!
Morning, Wanda. Don't know which it is, and I wasn't even watching! Geesh, 20 lashes with a wet noodle for me!
Ot was Lib, Belle just arrived!
Both are in the nest now. Pic isn't very clear at this hour.
Wanda, did her bring her a fish? Looked like he was eating when I first saw him, but now she looks like she's eatng.
Both are in the bedroom.
LOL, keep your eyes peeled, Wanda. You know Lib is a morning eagle!
Looks like there was a switch at BW, but didn't see it. Mom is on the eggs now.
Good morning Ladies. I am watching them. I just got my lazy butt out of bed!
Boy, she just put her butt right in his face, and he moved outta the way. He's up on a perch. Oh, now back.
Eagle at BWO.
I didn't see a fish,Suz, but could be.
Morning, Sharon!
Well she just up and poofed!
&$%@#& blogger cop got me.
Belle just flew out. Lib looks hunkered down in the egg cup.
Egg turning BW. Thanks, Wanda, just looked like Lib had his head down, thought he might be eating something.
Didn't see eggs at BW, turned eggs and right back down!
GOOD MORNING SHARON AND CANDY. Our visits are getting earlier and earlier.
Awww, feeding at Tesoro, can see 2 heads! They're getting big!
SUZ, did you see Steve's update on our cam?
Gotta go do something on other computer. Blog everything! BBIALW.
I just saw the two babies in Tesoro. I have never been able to see them til now. They are really lively and have taken on the apperance of an eagle.
Still just 2 eggs at BW.
Lib is just standing and looking into the bedroom. Hope Belle is going to bring back breakfast...wait, that is Lib's job.
Sharon did you get to see the Horned Owl last night?
Belle must be in the vacinity, Lib is nestorating.
BW parent looks disgruntled!
Eagle sitting in Norfolk nest as though brooding.
Both in our nest now.
Still no breakfast.
Belle just left. No food for her so she is going to get her own breakfast. Come on Lib, get busy.
AND THEN THERE WERE NONE!
Got back in time to see Belle for a second before she took off. And there went Lib!
Deer in PA. Eagle in nest at Norfolk, looks like trying to eat the bark. Another deer in PA. Eagle still at BWO.
Sharon, glad you got to see the BWE eggs! Tried all morning, he wouldn't get up enough, so glad to hear she still has 2.
Back to it, thanks for blogging everything, don't feel I missed a thing!
Two eagles in Norfolk, doing nestorations!
