Sunday

New thread.

I have gotten inquiries from folks about getting more info on what's going on and also requests that the NCTC do something to assist the birds.

I need to repeat that we all understand that this episode is unsettling to everyone, but it is one of the risks of having the cam in place--you get to see the wonderful things and the not so wonderful as well.

Wild nature is not always a happy place...the best thing to do is not to interfere in any way.

FWS biologists have been aware of this episode since it began and I suspect there will be more information put out tomorrow on the official cam website.

I have comment moderation on. Please leave your comments. When I get back from shopping I will post them on the NCTC Eagles Of Shepherdstown Blog I started 6 years ago. Paddy belongs there and I have made a place for her.

A little flutter of activity but not really......now pushing her out!!!!! Way to go, Belle!!!!

PammySue said...

I'm concerned that Belle let Trudy be on the nest that long without attacking her . . .

MicheleB said...

Looked like Trudy was moving sticks around. Darn bird. Come on Belle, tell her who's boss once and for all!

Jennifer said...

That was close! They fought a bit but then Trudy flew out! I was SCARED!

As we can see, I'm not teaching today. My daughter is sick still. I'm sure my school kiddos are so upset!

wvgal_dana said...

Belle just chased Trudy out of the nest.

Me too Pam. I thought that was pretty odd.

I'd like to see Liberty and Belle in the nest today. That's what I'm hoping for.

mariadangeloart said...

For a second I thought it might have been Liberty since she seemed to be tolerating it's presence.

Christine said...

I wish there was an eagle behaviorist or someone out there who could explain things to us!! Why is the other eagle jumping in and working on the nest like that? I believe everyone when they say this isn't Liberty so what the heck is going on????

bev. said...

I have watched raptors for years and I am baffled with this.

I made a long comment earlier and it did not come up .
I will rewrite if I have time

paula eagleholic said...

We don't know how long this battle is going to last. Other eagle cam watchers have never seen anything like it either....this bird just doesn't get it.

There may have to be more physical contact with the intruder to make her go away.

I think they will continue to defend the nest as long as there is an egg in the nest.

Lib and Belle remain in the area year round.

bev. we call that the "blogger cop". Sometimes long comments will get a message saying that it can't post and if you hit the refresh button, it WILL post anyway, and sometimes posts just DISAPPEAR. Not sure why!

paula eagleholic said...

Maybe Belle was being cautious in the nest because of the egg and chick.

Unknown said...

Paula, thank you for your response, I appreciate it. I really hope Belle and Liberty are able to drive her off soon

hedgie said...

Belle is covering cup contents with flugg......guess she thinks that will keep the witch form disturbing the remains. Guess we can consider it her version of a burial. RIP Paddy O'Joy and egglet.

MicheleB said...

She's really digging now. Looks like she's covering everything up. Maybe Trudy will leave once the nest is "emtpy"? Stupid hormonal Trudy!

my comment that did not publish was about Norfolk a few years ago.

The female went away for a bi t, if you remember. one egg was smashed but she left the others.I believe she left to get stronger , to chase the intruder off.

and obviously she was successful. She came back to give birth to wonderful buddy , who I support financially.

Lynne2 said...

I wonder if Belle covering the remains and the egg means she realizes, or accepts now, the fate of her clutch. And if so, will she now be more aggressive at fighting off Trudy? I just wondered if she was "holding back" just a bit to avoid risk of injury while she had a viable clutch and was just using minimal techniques to deal with the intruder.

hedgie said...

Glo............what can I say???? I left my comments. Bless you.

mariadangeloart said...

Don't mean to upset anyone, but I was just wondering, if for some reason Belle abandons the nest and the intruder moves in, does Liberty go with Belle or does he stay with the nest and take up with the intruder? Never saw anything like this happen before.

hedgie said...

As I said on last page, I will work on a new cheat sheet.

paula eagleholic said...

Lynne, could very well be. Most intruders leave after being chased away a couple of times.

Lynne2 said...

Bev, some of us when we first started on the blog made a cheat sheet...notes...about who was who, an other info we wanted to remember. It was never anything formal that everyone had a copy of, just each person doing there own.

Who do I email my info to?

signgirl said...

I posted earlier( Must have deleted it accidently) To recap, the loss I felt yesterday when POJ didn't survive. I am still crying. I feel like your blog is a family and with family you get support. I feel for Belle trying to defend her nest. I have been watching since Heidi. But I feel the need to connect this time!

Lynne2 said...

I think it's not just the nest, but the whole territory an intruder is after. Eagles tend to stay in the same territory even though they may build other nests to use within it because of food availability, etc. and a good territory is very valuable. I think, but am not sure, if Belle leaves, Lib will go with her. IF something fatal happened to Belle...then I think that Lib may stay with the new female. THis is all just guessing, I'm not sure.

hedgie said...

Bev, I will make up a lsit of blog names with a bit of identifying info if I have it.....makes it easier for people to keep track of who's who!!! Especially the newbies who don't know who we are when we call people by their first names.

JO---it's ME whose going to do it.....and, yes, if folks want to be contacted, and receive the cheat sheet through momsteer mail, they need to be on there!!

Lynne2 said...

Hi signgirl, thanks for joining us on the blog!

bev. said...

From what I have witnessed , Belle will not give up this nest without a fight. She has too much vested in it.

LIb will stay with the winner. This is usually, but we have seen many strange things over the years.

I personally do not think Lib or Belle will leave right now until they have this straightened out.

Now I am gone

WOW fast posters, was all caught up on my phone made my coffee and had several more to read when I got back to my office.

Nice to know Belle covered O'Joy and the egg up. I see Belle has food, and the intruder is getting brazen I read. Perhaps she thought intimiidation would chase Belle off and now realized it wasn't working? I hope Belle stands her ground, if she had her talons out in flight yesterday she was looking to either intimidate or do some damage to the intruder perhaps.

I read some articles on other eagles who had to deal with intruders, not pretty so I hope everyone is prepared for what can happen, I trust Belle will prevail but it can get ugly, just a FYI. If you couldn't watch earlier I suggest you turn off completely.

The Tampa eagles was one story...

I have watched falcons fight for territory. Not because I really wanted to but because the biologists asked me to keep track .
It is not pretty and I end up a wreck every time.
.
My favorite Falcon in Edmonton was defeated at her nest site and I was in tears the whole time but she survived.

The next year she came back and tried again and lost. but she has taken up at another site in Edmonton which I also keep track of. I felt the transmitter hindered her and I felt it also brought her hom e1 month later than other falcons.

the biologists listened and took the transmitter off this year so we will see if she comes back on time.

there is a long story here but I will spare you.

Jo, I sent an email to the address you sent me. Have not checked yet to see if I heard back. Jack is on that computer.

Several people have asked if we have an official commentator from NCTC. No, we do not have that on here. However, we do have Paula and several others on here who are very knowledgeable and who have watched the cam for many years.

Yes, we do have contact with NCTC by email. However, we leave that to just a few, as we do not want to bombard them.

I hope that answers a few questions that I have read.

paula eagleholic said...

Found on OD forum...

All -

It has been quite a long weekend. Here is a summary of an update which will go live on our Web page shortly:

Over the weekend we were able to confirm multiple sightings of the male eagle who is a part of the established breeding pair. He appears to be uninjured and in good health. We were also able to confirm the presence of a third eagle near the nest, and we are almost certain it is a breeding age female. The eaglet, as many of you know, has died.

We have biologists on staff at NCTC who have offered their assessments of the situation. It is generally agreed that if the new female is successful in taking over the nest, she will then need to recruit a male to join her. If she does find a mate, it is likely too late in the nesting season to lay, incubate, and hatch any new eggs.

Nest competition is common in areas with healthy eagle populations. The fact that we are seeing nest competition at NCTC means the population of eagles in the area has likely increased in recent years.

Thanks much, Eagle-eye Sharon and Hedgie. Whew I read a couple of comment from very early this morning, and it appeared that Belle wasn't doing too well.

But now that she has determined there are no life sounds or signs from the egg and has buried the two, I am very confident that she will be able to defend her territory.

She probably is standing guard in the tree above now. Has Lib been seen?? Did she get her own fish, or did he bring it in??

Unfortunately, like the year of the late snow storm, I think it is too late for a second clutch this year. It looks like the best pair and my favorite pair will survive this challenge.

Judie said...

Taking a break from grading papers.

Won't have much to say today but would like to suggest that what we are seeing is very much like the events that occurred near the Wilson bridge (VA/MD) about two years ago with George and Martha. Young female wanted the nest and George. Battle ensued. Martha injured, rehabilitated, returned to bridge area. Was fatally injured by the younger female. Much was known because construction workers watched and reported. New female and George mated.

I believe Belle has accepted the reality but will continue to defend until no longer physically able. Sometimes I do not like nature's way of doing things.

Need to go back to work. Will return to put the night light on.

Scott said...

@floralgirl thanks, we enjoyed meeting you all yesterday as well!
