Shirley I enjoy titmice so...hubby calls them baby blue jays lol. He use to put out peanuts no salt in shells. They would peck and peck at them until they got the nuts. Sometimes they would fly off with the whole peanut shell and all. Bigger than they were not actually. tee hee
I had one get trapped on my screen porch once. I captured it in my bare hands. The brave little thing grabbed a beakful of my skin, but didn't have the strength to hurt me.
It flew happily away when I released it.
There are shelled peanuts in the food I put out. I saw one of the titmice fly away with a peanut. The info I looked up says they like sunflower seeds, too. I put plenty of them out, mixed with other seeds.
Belle flew to the other side of the nest like she was going to leave and Hidey tried to push her out. She flew back over and took the fish and Hidey is still screaming. Darn cam stopped.
It has almost been one year since the accident - I am always hesitant to open the remarks fearing for the worst but praying for the best for Mason & his family and friends.
I Googled "eagle catching flies" and got a lot of stuff about how they don't catch flies, but I think that is a reference to the fact that they take more noble prey.
Hi all! Thought I'd jump in here and let you know that since Belle landed with that fish a while back, she was being dive-bombed by a BIRD. The latest episode was that of that darn bird again that has a very short life span if adult catches it! You can actually hear the screech as it passes. I think I'll jump out again, but wanted y'all to know it wasn't flies that are bothering the beauties. Bye!
Can't believe I tuned in just in time today. First time I've seen Hidey and parent in a long time.So beautiful. Hope everyone is staying cool. It was 100 when I left the parking lot at Food Lion today. Have a good one. Love, Gwen
On Thursday I went into Pittsburgh with a birding friend and we went to the National Aviary. All of those birds were great to see. It was pretty crowded with young children that made a lot of noise so many of the birds were shy. We did see some African penguins and of course eagles. I learned that more species of penguins live in temperate climates than live in Anartica. There were even some mice eating from a bowl in one of the displays. Needless to say, it wasn't in with the owls or other birds of prey. We may go back another day when it is less crowded.
When I commented at 1:38pm today. I had seen something black fly towards Liberty. Fast ... poof gone. I thought I was seeing things though. I typed I thought maybe a blackbird. As I continued to watch. I did increase the screen by the percentage at the bottom. I did see Liberty snapping at flies. There still could have been a bird bothering him before that.
Neat Shirley about the little titmouse.
Sharon tee hee you was only at the reunion for 1 minute. tee hee Just kidding. Comment 1 then comment 2 was a minute apart.
Dana, I really wasn't there much longer than a minute. I thought I had posted the first one before I went but it didn't go through, so I hit publish and it went. I see our Hidey is still in the nest.
I am home. I only got about a 20 sec clip of Belle going after whatever it was, bird or fly. Whatever it was it was funny to watch. If I hadn't had to get back to work, I would have done a longer clip.
Guess I've missed seeing the little imp and his parents again, but I'm mighty glad to hear that they had quite a bit for dinner. Get concerned that Hidey might not be catching enough food for himself. Isn't it great that Lib and Belle are still so concerned for Hidey's well being? They are the best parents!
I've been doing Keyboard exercises for quite a while, and thought I'd take a break before I go cross-eyed! Went to Office Depot earlier, and finally found the printer ink I needed. It's so nice to not have my printer whining at me about the ink being low!
Well, have to hit the books now and study for the 2 big exams on Tues. & Wed. Have a great Saturday evening, and I'll talk to you some time tomorrow.
Oh-- just remembered! Rachel Alexandra won the $300,000 Mother Goose at Belmont today! Won by 19 1/4 lengths, in a stakes-record 1:46.33! You go, girl! Calvin Borel didn't have to urge her on at all, after she stormed between Malibu Prayer and Flashing on the far turn and took the lead. Amazing! :o]
If Hidey is catching any fish right now, it is pure luck. As smart as Norma thinks Hidey is, maybe he has gotten lucky.
Once the young eagles have fledged (to acquire the feathers necessary for flight) they remain around the nest for four or five weeks, taking short flights while their primary feathers grow and strengthen. Their parents still provide all of their food. The young birds, with the exception of their color, resemble their parents, but are nothing like them in behavior. They have to learn how to hunt, and they only have the remainder of the summer to learn. After that, they're on their own. The first winter is the most dangerous and difficult part of an eagle's life.
I have read on other sights that a lot of adult eagles will help out a young eagle during their first winter, even if the eagle isn't their own. I have seen that happen once at the river. Not sure if it was on purpose or not, but I watched an adult drop a fish and a young eagle swoop in and claim it.
I have also watched fishermen provide food for the eagles. They will catch a carp, hit its head and drop the fish back in the water. That makes it easy for the eagles to get a meal.
You are so righ, Deb. Hidey is still going to school. If you will look at my JUST FOR FUN blog, you will see where Hidey goes to school;) Lolly noticed the sign when she was in Martinsburg and I told her, yes that is where our eagles get their smarts;)
06/27/09: Technical Note Normally we turn off the Eagle Cam at this time of year, since the family is scarce. But we've decided to leave the cam on for now and put it at 5-minute updates so we can see if any birds are visiting. Later this summer, we'll likely turn off the cam until November.

I might have to get a cup of tea so I can make it to the story. I have plenty of tea. We have a Victorian tea party at the end of the school year with seniors, and I usually buy enough tea to last me a long time . . . I furnish the tea.
Good Sunday Morning Everyone!!Got some pics ready to put on here. Hear Hidey squealing---I guess for breakfast! Just went out to deck w/coffee & our Ms. Flicker was back working on her nest hole. Lately we only see her maybe in the morning, so don't know what's going on. As Helen said, we'll have to watch for "As the Flicker Turns"!
Norma, my kids and their friends will be here for the 4th, I'm coming home on the 2nd, going to Nats game and mall fireworks up in town on the 4th, will be home for 2 weeks with a side trip to Chicago, hubby has to work there for 2 weeks and I have my July zoo days to do.
Good morning all. Been watching flytecomm. My son and girlfriend left for Hong Kong yesterday to visit her family and attend a family wedding. They will be there for about two weeks and then he goes to Switzerland for a week on business. Jim lived the story about the elephant. Those elephants showed those humans. Don't mess with our mangos.
Norma, I teach at a public high school. One of our teachers started the custom of the tea party several years ago as a celebration at the end of the classes in British literature. It is fun.
Shirley I love tea restaurants. I dring herbal tea. We went to a tea in PA a few weeks ago and the place had hundreds of hats all over the room. We all put one on and had a great time.
I went downstairs to get some breakfast and a cup of tea. Looked outside to see that the squirrels are having a ball with the remains of the bird food I left out on my back porch. Sunflower shells everywhere. Three squirrels having a feast.
Don't have as many squirrels as we did in out old house, but there is a stand of oak trees in the back, so there are some. They show up if I put out bird food. I have bought corn for them at times. They are fun to watch.
Good morning my eagle budlets! I just got up. Don't know when I have slept this late. I turned on the cam just in time to hear Hidey squawking and then dropped into the nest.
Wow, I just read where flickers lay 7-9 eggs so there may be more than 3 babies in there and 3 is all that fit in the hole. I bet that gets a little crowded.
Nuts, I must have missed Hidey, but finally got my pics to Stay on Blog. There are about 3 sets including our flickers. And I'm so glad I took that coffee break outside. Saw BOTH at the tree. Sharon, we need your flicker report.

Jim
I do see plenty of flies by increasing the percent at the bottom of my screen.
I have seen no other birds. I have just seen Liberty snapping at insects. . . or at least that is what it looks like to me.
Liberty was just picking at the fish and the flies. Now dragged the fish over and it eating at it.
Yeah, he probably brought it for Hidey, but since he hasn't shown up, looks like Liberty might eat it himself.
C(°ٿ°)D
Jim
I guess there is some food over there behind the smudge. I can hear--and see eating going on.
The food has probably attracted flies.
I have my picture at 200% now.
Maybe Hidey is off fishing.
Large fish. I see it now.
Lib is still looking for a dinner companion.
The fish was on the other side of that larger stick Shirley. When Liberty was biting at flies.
Thanks, Dana. I missed it because I was so fascinated with what he was doing. Impressive fish, judging by what I saw. Plenty of food.
I've been having a few titmice at my feeder. Finally.
Shirley I enjoy titmice so...hubby calls them baby blue jays lol. He use to put out peanuts no salt in shells. They would peck and peck at them until they got the nuts. Sometimes they would fly off with the whole peanut shell and all. Bigger than they were not actually. tee hee
Camera is focusing in on some of the flamingo chicks.... There is more then the one we saw earlier.....
Good to see the adult in our nest just hanging out and relaxing!
Jo, I think Lib is snoozing and digesting the rather large fish he just ate.
Lib seemed to be snapping at flies or some kind of insect earlier. It was strange looking.
I think that is Lib. He is looking all around I think trying to find Hidey. Such a good parent.
This is what I tried to post earlier but it didn't go through.
Good morning my eagle budlets!
My baby flicker is over here chirping. I love it. We have gone though a lot to get here!
I went to the flea market this morning but no fleas jumped on me. Getting ready to go the Riffe reunion.
I have already been to Riffe's and back home.
Belle is there and Lib and Belle are pecking at each other. Belle took the fish.
Hidey is here and wants the fish.
Hey Sharon.
What a nice surprise for my lunch break!
I have a splitting headache, no mean callers, just two very complicated ones!
LIb left. Belle is up closer to the camera. Hidey has the fish but still will not shut up.
Deb, hope your headache can take all of this squealing!
Just back from the Flamingo cam..
How about that for 2 in the nest..
Belle flew to the other side of the nest like she was going to leave and Hidey tried to push her out. She flew back over and took the fish and Hidey is still screaming. Darn cam stopped.
Hidey is learning her lessons well. That fish is MINE!
I turned the sound down half way!
I guess Belle is hungry too. Lib had plenty already.
You can still hear plenty for sure, Deb.
Wish they would get their heads up for air!
It really looked like enough fish for a family of 3 eagles.
You are right, I finally turned it all the way off.
Jo I think they are both holding on to the fish.
Yes, I think they are both eating.
BBL
I wish we had a wider view
They are both chowing down..
Wider view without a 'smudge'
Lib showed up with that fish some time ago.
There is a new Mason update. That poor kid has been through so much in the last year. He seems to weather whatever is thrown at him.
Mason Update
It has almost been one year since the accident - I am always hesitant to open the remarks fearing for the worst but praying for the best for Mason & his family and friends.
Looks like Belle is catching bugs now.
lol Now I see what you meant about
'catching flies' ??? I wonder what
it is........
Lib was doing that awhile ago. It was really strange. We decided that he was catching flies.
Making a strange sound too.
I have never in 3 seasons seen anything like this....... ROFLMBO
That is so funny, I got a little clip of it, but I won't have time to load it before lunch is over.
Hidey hasn't gotten into the fly-catching mode.
We need an Eagle Expert on this action!
Has to be a pretty big fly to pester an eagle........
I'm glad you did that Deb - Maybe we can get some opinions about it!
It's the noise that sets me laughing!
I Googled "eagle catching flies" and got a lot of stuff about how they don't catch flies, but I think that is a reference to the fact that they take more noble prey.
I did not take time to read the stuff. I think this eagle was catching flies.
Seems there is a proverb that says the eagle doesn't catch flies, but how did they know if they did not have an eagle cam?
For sure something was getting in her face!
Kid has backed off and quieted down. Maybe mom scared him.
Hidey has a full tummy I'm sure.
Contentment for an eagle kid.
Need to leave Eagleland - getting ready for Sat Evening Mass....
BBL
Maybe there will be a new thread when I return.......
Bye, Jo.
Getting close to 500.
Bye!
I didn't see a bird. It will be interesting to see what Deb got.
Can't believe I tuned in just in time today. First time I've seen Hidey and parent in a long time.So beautiful. Hope everyone is staying cool. It was 100 when I left the parking lot at Food Lion today. Have a good one. Love, Gwen
Thanks Fuzzle . . .
Hunter, a lot of the time when eagles are setting on the eggs, they will be swarmed with flying insects, and they definitely will snap at them.

Glad to see Hidey back in the nest. Did he get some feed??
C(°ٿ°)D
Jim
I would think so too, Jim. I really didn't see a bird, but I might have missed something.
There was an adult at NBG, but now one of the eaglets has returned.

Jim
I think Hidey got some. He and mom battled over the remaining fish. Dad had eaten quite a bit.
It was a very noisy dinner.
Now my cat is snapping at an annoying fly.
So was Belle sitting on that food all this time . . . and Hidey was waiting her out?
Looks like Mom got tired of all that whining and left the little brat with the leftovers;)
Belle continued to eat even though Hidey was 'in her face'. Finally, she succumbed to the whinging and left!
Afternoon all. I finally saw and heard our Hidey.

Fare Thee Well, Eagle Pals
Off to work....Sigh....what a fabulous day around these parts in West Virginia!
Deb's work day is almost over! Yay!
Best Wishes for a great evening...
wasn't it fun to be able to see our Eagles today!
Prayers for Wellness, Comfort, Safety, and FUN !
See you Sunday morning sometime.

I hear Hidey.
Strange eagle behavior again. Adult in nest. I did think I saw a shadow of somehting larger than a fly, but will keep watching.
I do not know how to make a recording of the movements. Can only do still pics.
Adult has left.
goose has put on her raincoat at the snowman cam
off to fix dinner..bbl
I am home. I only got about a 20 sec clip of Belle going after whatever it was, bird or fly. Whatever it was it was funny to watch. If I hadn't had to get back to work, I would have done a longer clip.
The clip is on my Nest Pictures blog.

I am happy to report that I have at least 3 baby flickers. Saw 3 heads sticking out the hole being fed a while ago. I am so excited.
Just got back from dinner at Applebee's with Thelma and Becky. it was really good. We are kidless as they are still at Riffe's.
Deb, I saw the behavior again later today.
Glad you were able to document an example.
I have read on other sights that a lot of adult eagles will help out a young eagle during their first winter, even if the eagle isn't their own. I have seen that happen once at the river. Sharon, do you like the beach goers yet?
When did Hidey fledge? It might be coming close to 4-5 weeks.
Wanda, your video of the parachute things is great.
I see Ms Goose had to cover up her Fourth of July outfit. :(
Off to feed the dogs and put up my feet for awhile.
Hidey'd first departure from the nest was on Saturday morning, May 30 at about 5:00-5:30 AM. First returned on Sunday morning, May 31 at 11:18 AM.
Love the parachutes, Wanda.
I 100% agree, Deb, I think parents are still doing the fishing maybe dropping the fish on the ground and he picks up and flys back to nest
loved the parachute video Wanda....I would need more practice to do that:)
I get enough thrills just watching the parachutes.
That parachute video makes me want to try it...wheeee!
I will watch, Wanda!

Good morning! I hear Hidey getting closer.
Heard a woodpecker out back this morning. At least it's not pecking on my house this time.
Hidey is vocal this morning!
Morning, Deb. Hidey has been making lots of noise for awhile.
How are you this Sunday morning?
Sounds like Hidey is about to make an appearance.
Morning, I am up early here today. I am going out to enjoy nature. The high temp is only supposed to be in the upper 70's today!

Haven't turned on the news this morning. Have been enjoying the quiet.
Hidey sounds far away now.

I guess that anyone who lives near the nest gets to hear Hidey's fussing every day whether they want to or not.

I might have to get a cup of tea so I can make it to the story. I have plenty of tea. We have a Victorian tea party at the end of the school year with seniors, and I usually buy enough tea to last me a long time . . . I furnish the tea.
I mean to the store . . .
MITS---Forgot to ask---Are you having the family down during the week-end?---
WHOA!---SHIRLEY---Just don't go around tossing the tea in the ocean!---ho!
Not near the ocean . . . at least not that near.
I drink iced tea all day---
Good Sunday Morning Everyone!!Got some pics ready to put on here.
Norma, my kids and their friends will be here for the 4th, I'm coming home on the 2nd, going to Nats game and mall fireworks up in town on the 4th, will be home for 2 weeks with a side trip to Chicago, hubby has to work there for 2 weeks and I have my July zoo days to do.
juvie at BWE
MORNIN' NATURENUT!---Do you have a pic of your FLICKER on your blog? I thought I had one--but didn't find it on GOOGLE!
HEY!---That sounds good to me MITS!
works for me, Norma:)
argghh! Blogger lost one of my pics, so I'll have to delete & start over.
BUT, gotta have another cup of coffee!
Don't mess with our mangos.
looks like they are 12 hours ahead of us Ceil.
SHIRLEY---Do you teach at a private school?
They are 12 or 13 hours ahead of us.
Can hear Hidey
Norma, I teach at a public high school. One of our teachers started the custom of the tea party several years ago as a celebration at the end of the classes in British literature. It is fun.
Hidey has been bouncing all over the place all morning.
We have a pair of squirrels and their babies in our area. My neighbor hates any type of animal. He did think the babies were cute.
I am sure my tea party wasn't entirely authentic. Students were requried to dress nicely and everyone brought food.
Sounds good to me.
MORNIN' LOVELY CEIL!!---What a wonderful mini vacation for your son & friend!---I would like to visit Switzerland---
Don't have as many squirrels as we did in out old house, but there is a stand of oak trees in the back, so there are some. They show up if I put out bird food. I have bought corn for them at times. They are fun to watch.
Well, hello to Hidey!
Yep Hidey is in the nest. Eating left overs I think.
Norma if I liked to fly. Switzerland would be a place I would like to visit.
Good morning my eagle budlets! I just got up. Don't know when I have slept this late. I turned on the cam just in time to hear Hidey squawking and then dropped into the nest.
Morning Sharon. Good for you. I have been awake since 4:00.
Look at Hidey's white feathers!
Shirley they are still I call them baby feathers. Will not have white for a few more years.
At what age do they get the white head?
Not until about 4 or 5 years I think. Don't quote me. I will look it up.
Hidey sure is quite all of a sudden.
I am going to try to get pics today of my 3 baby flickers at the hole today. It was so cute yesterday.
Hidey just did that belly scratching thing again. Did anybody else see it? It is like she rocks back and forth.
Maybe making up for all the noise she has been making all morning.
Sharon, I saw the belly-scratch. Funny.
Wow, I just read where flickers lay 7-9 eggs so there may be more than 3 babies in there and 3 is all that fit in the hole. I bet that gets a little crowded.
Doesn't like that stick in the way.
BBL
GOOD MORNING EVERYONE...
I tuned in just in time to see Hidey eating his veggies:)
I do believe he threw that piece of 'garbage' out of there. Gonna be a good housekeeper some day;)
Hidey just took off.
I gotta take off too. BBL
SHIRLEY--I think that the tea is a wonderful thing!!---Kids need to be exposed to tea parties, etc---particularly BRITISH LIT classes!!-----
Sometimes they surprise you. . . I have had a few who did not know how to use a tea bag. They need to learn those things.
MORNIN' BLUEFIELD SHARON!---I want to see what your FLICKERS look like!!----
Mei Xiang is acting goofy this a.m., running around climbing trees
I see all the goofy panda activity this morning, Mits.
Nuts, I must have missed Hidey, but finally got my pics to Stay on Blog.
There are about 3 sets including our flickers. And I'm so glad I took that coffee break outside. Saw BOTH at the tree.
Sharon, we need your flicker report.
Good Morning All! I missed the nest action but maybe I can be #600 on the blog or close to it!
Humid outside and does call for Thunder storms later.
I don't know what set her off, she was up by her door, and all of a sudden she went ballistic
