A week or two ago, some of our folks saw one of the fledglings on the ground near the NCTC Day Care Center. Here they are:

DEB---Checked your WOODPECKER pics!!---Aren't they colorful!!----I was certain I had seen a BOBOLINK!---but I didn't see one!!-----Now I know what I know what they look like!!---You are truly blessed to live in an area with so many birds!! We are blessed that you share them with us!!---ho!

deb said...

Dana, glad you like the woodpecker, have been trying to get a picture of one for a couple of weeks. They have been all over lately. I have to put comments on them yet, but was too tired last night.

deb said...

Thanks, Norma. I want to know what is on the tree. I will have to do some checking on it. I think it might be a nest of some sort.

MITS said...

wonderful pictures, Deb, that nest does look familiar, but don't know what it is

Costume Lady said...

Deb, you do have some interesting birds in your area. Have heard of a Bobolink, but never saw one. Thought they were they same as a Bobwhite...WRONG! We are learning so much from our Momsters & Dadsters from different states. It is wonderful to share with each other.

Eagle-Eyed's Sissy said...

WV gal, that kinda looks like it, kinda don't. They are beautiful, so far the bees are staying away, that is a good thing.

I can only get pandacam2 up now. Did have both earlier but not for a while. Mits, make em fix it, I might die!! ;)

hedgie said...

Good pics of woodpecker, Deb.
Did anyone hear about the bear rescue? Think it was in Florida...a tranquilized bear decided to head into water and was going to drown, so a guy went in after it and saved it! Pretty brave! The bear was 6 1/2 ft. tall and weighed, I think they said, 375#!!!

MITS said...

SISSY keep clicking til you get the buffering, my contact guy, told me the other day there is some work being done, and uploading may be slow.....soooooo keep clicking, I am on both now...Mei is eating and Tai is sleeping

Bob Quinn said...

On another note... I got home last night and checked our hummingbird feeders. There was a squirrel hanging off one, tipping it to the side drinking the nectar.

Mema Jo said...

Thanks for repeating the live Chimney Swifts link that Deb found yesterday.
When I first put it up I was wondering how was I going to know it was working as everything was sooooo
still - All of of sudden the wing of

Deb what kind of woodpecker is it called?

MITS said...

eating something...

wvgal_dana said...

I check by for comments food....

Eagle-Eyed's Sissy said...

where is the smoke coming from on pandacam2?

MITS said...

it's not smoke, Sissy, it is a mister, keeps them cool like in the mountains of China

Mema Jo said...

Deb How close did you get to the tree that you are questioning what is on it? Is there a hole there in the center? A limb may have broken from the tree and that may be an actual fungus type growth...

Eagle-Eyed's Sissy said...

That bird doesn't look like it has the black on the wings but it may just be the angle. You are probably right wvgal, that is probably it. Beautiful at any rate.

Eagle-Eyed's Sissy said...

oh, okay, thanks mits. They had those at disney world for the people!!

normabyrd said...

DEB!---I have been over on emails!!---I wonder what it was too!!---Couldn't tell if it were a growth on the tree---or had it been attached by someone?

Bob Quinn said...

No picture of the squirrel Jo but you know it will be back again.

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

Well, I think that is Baby Littley in the nest now! :)

MITS said...

Mei Xiang is actually resting in the den she gave birth to Tai Shan...

normabyrd said...

JO---Did you send SUZANNE the pic BOB took of her with the OSPREY??-----She hasn't seen it yet!!!----I DIDN'T find it in the batch you sent me???

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

MT nest again! :(

MITS said...

well, know they are showing Tian..

deb said...

Maybe it is a growth, I got right next to the tree, but it was about 15 feet up. I was in bird mode, so thought nest, never thought about a limb falling off. It isn't far, I plan to go back, so I will look again. Maybe the park ranger will know.

Dana, it is a red-headed woodpecker.

MITS said...

ok Mei is awake

Eagle-Eyed's Sissy said...

Yeah, mits, she is wanting outside now. She looks so cute standing at that window dancing!!

normabyrd said...

OH BOB!!---I have had squirrel problems for years!!----Read in a bird column---to mix 'red pepper' in your feed----won't hurt the birds -- but the squirrels don't like it!! ------- I had one daughter crying that it would hurt the birds & a son-in-law helping me pour it in the feed!!---WORKED 1DAY----SQUIRRELS were back the next day---hot pepper & all!---CLEVER LITTLE DEVILS!!----ho!

MITS said...

she only dances til she get what she wants, and right know it is a snack

MITS said...

there goes Mei...outside

normabyrd said...

DEB!---Don't you think that the bark has been punctured etc. in
the middle of the growth---looks like a scar on the tree---could cause the growth around it----

MY #1 SUGGESTION!!---ask the park ranger!---ho!------I have seen fake forms of bark growth in dept. stores---used to decorate your trees!!!

deb said...

Yes, Norma, now I am thinking you and Jo are right. I didn't think about that yesterday.

deb said...

Message from Suzanne about her osprey:

That little guy was very calm, and all of a
sudden he turned his head around with beak open! Thought he was gonna
take my nose off. But then he later bit my finger, but it didn't hurt at
all. I was totally surprised. Kinda glad he didn't apply any pressure,
he woulda taken my finger off.

deb said...

Two in nest!

Eagle-Eyed's Sissy said...

is there a baby in the nest? The came is fuzzed up. Maybe 2??

deb said...

I think the one fuzzy picture had all three, but it was so hard to tell. Definitely two.

FROM SCOTLAND NEST UPDATE:
Osprey Diary - 30 June 2008

Things are certainly moving in the right direction now! On Saturday morning for the first time the chick actually fed itself. This is great news as the chick is getting ever closer to fledging. The chick is also now exercising its wings, building up its muscles.

There is still the odd intruder but they have not been any trouble for our resident family. Certainly not bad enough to put the male off, although our female did see off one intruder that was prospecting the loch for a bit of fishing.

normabyrd said...

Saw one burrowing owl's head!!

Eagle-Eyed's Sissy said...

Mits, which bear is in in the cubicle sleeping on that cube?

normabyrd said...

OOOOHHHH!---SO SAD!!!!!---The 2 STORKS are in the nest alone & the older one is really being NASTY with the other one!!----Pecking---winging--doing every thing he can to hurt the younger one!!---Do you suppose they are hungry!!----They are having a famine there I think!!!

MITS said...

think it is Tai, looks like his little side den, unless they moved Tian there, they are constantly changing Tai and Tian...most days, so they don't get bored, they are keeping Mei in the 2 middle inside dens, so she can have her pic and room if she gives birth.

wvgal_dana said...

Is that 1 or 2 in our nest?

normabyrd said...

SISSY!!---I don't know what's wrong with the PANDA cam!!---I think TAI is the one lying in the rock cave like thing!!---Keeps scratching his other leg!---That's a good clue??? ho!

Going for a panda nap

normabyrd said...

JO---I looked back in & they were just there!!----haven't seen 3 in the nest today!!!

movin said...

Do you have the the link for the Hummingbird feeders you are talking about?

Bob, I've never had a squirrel hanging on my feeder, but I have had House Finches and other medium size birds doing it.

Removing the perches from the feeder slowed the bigger birds way down ... and many of my Hummers perch in trees nearby, so it's a waste on my feeder.

Bees have never gotten to the nectar through the bee guards on my Perky Pet feeder. Ants have though, and the Hummers won't go near the stuff if ants are all over it.

I did find a cure for ants somewhere on-line, and it works:

Ants smell and perhaps taste with their feet, and they do not like to walk on a greasy or sticky surface; so you just put a ring of Crisco (I still have a can I don't use for much else) or Vaseline on the mounting wire or the hook ... between the ants and the nectar somewhere ... the little buggers will not cross it.

Probably work for other applications too, but I can't think where else you would put a ring of Crisco right now.

normabyrd said...

what bird are you looking for SISSY?

movin said...

Thanks, Sissy. All the way down in Ecuador, huh! Boy they don't have any guards against bees or anything else apparently.

I saw some larger sparrow like birds on there a couple of minutes ago.

Black storks are really getting big...wonder when they will fledge? I love that camera--crystal clear and w/ nice panorama of surroundings, too! A bit of sun glare right now...and it's already 8:30 there.

normabyrd said...

BLACK-CHINNED HUMMING BIRD?--could that be the one SISSY???

Eagle-Eyed's Sissy said...

It is a beautiful green bird on the hummer feeder, black cap on it's head. We can't figure out what it is. Jim, the bees have been overtaking the feeder for the past few days but today is not as bag. They have been keeping the hummers away. Get an occasion coati (whatever that is, looks like a cross between an anteater and a raccoon).

Eagle-Eyed's Sissy said...

no, norma it is not a hummer, some other kind of bird. Like he said, size of a sparrow or something.

hedgie said...

Sound at black stork nest is great, too--can hear a bee/wasp buzzing!

Baby Robin Report;
One didn't make it thru the night, but Peppy got the 7AM worm breakfast. After checking rehabs online late last night & making several phones in AM, got in touch w/the best that's closest to us.She said since I was out of worms, it could tempo. eat soaked cat or dog crunchies.Had Purina Cat Chow!I had heard another youngster way back in yard & seen a robin parent. We speculated whether that adult would feed him. I decided not to let him loose, as I might not be able to feed him if he wandered too far away & didn't know size of other youngster. We both had appts. so I called her back at 1:30. In meantime, hubby wanted to keep him since he could eat cat food!Lady said (Thank God)there are Fed. Rules against keeping migratory birds & cat food is NOT a suitable diet.So Peppy in his bin and I headed down the road, about 30 miles.I am so relieved he is in good hands and will surely make it.She had him in a cage w/twig perch and a bowl of TINY somethings & he had been sitting in a larger bowl (these simulate nests.)Before I left, he jumped up on edge of bowl! She does this work at her home by donations, but want6s to start a clinic & wondered if I wanted to work there!
