I hear Hidey. It sounds like she is in the tree or really close anyway.

Another word for the dictionary? We need a cheat sheet and a dictionary.

Heard the honking, too.

Sounds like a starter to me, T-Bird.
Megan has that problem with the Flower Van !

Mema Jo said...

Sharon - it really does remind you of a barber pole - I wonder what the techies call it?

T-Bird said...

Is it the starter Magpie if it turns over?

stronghunter said...

I'll ask my son the computer guy. He might say it is a green barber pole, though.

T-Bird said...

It's hard to tell what the techies call it. Probably something technical. Ha ha

Put another link on the prayer chain..for Dana's Ed please.
Got throught the doctor's app't and review Wednesday, going back for another app't with cardiologist Friday. Oxygen levels still rather low, they are going to ramp up the oxygen. Doctors sound like they know what they are doing, being very careful, and working to find the best treatments.

Dana and Ed are having a Movie Night at home together tonight, and Dana will try to check back in Friday later on. But they are just chillin' tonight at their Roost.

Dana appreciates our concern, and surely appreciates the Prayers....as does Ed....

Hey T-Bird , Megan has a plan for getting her van to start it involves crawling underneath with a hammer and banging on the starter.
Sounds like fun, huh??

Could be a bunch of other things, but that is probably where the mechanics will start. I have had the problem before, but not with the buggy I have now. It's like having no car at all !!!!!!

stronghunter said...

I do not know much about cars, but I do not think it is the starter if it turns over. It has to be started to turn over.

T-Bird said...

Later Mema Jo

stronghunter said...

Probably shouldn't bang it with a hammer.

Prayers sent to Dana and Ed.

maybe a rubber mallet ??

Maybe Megan will add to what I put on there...

Son-in-law used to do that to jeep starter and voila - away she went.

Got to run and get potting soil to plant some plants I got at Market last week...

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

In my unprofessional opinion, I think it is some kind of sensor. My Bonneville would go through periods of not starting and it took 3 years to figure out what was wrong with it and I am the one who figured it. Just kept getting on the internet and typing in the symptoms and VOILA, there it was one day. Guess I need to try to do that to the Honda, huh?

Thanks for the info on Dana and Ed, Margy.

I had a car once that had starter problems. I would have to crawl under it and hit it with a hammer. One time it didn't work so I kicked a dent in the fender and it started right up! :)

T-Bird said...

Later Magpie, I feel like trying anything when I'm sitting there.

T-Bird said...

Sounds like car abuse to me. : )

magpie said...

Ha Ha, one last TTFN.
Of course, my car would never duplicate it for the mechanics either!
You go Sharon... it could be one of those modules, and I forget what the name of it is. Some call it the Brain Box. Ha Ha, great name! Sometimes my Brain Box needs repair !

Was talking to my daughter, and she said that you might hit a starter with a hammer if there is a flat spot in the starter. Sounds very confusing to me. I would not want to go banging on my car with a hammer, to tell the truth. I might be able to change an air filter, but that is about it.

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

I have actually installed a radiator in a car before.

stronghunter said...

Did the rain clean up the smudge a bit? I thought I could see Hidey better even when she was behind it earlier.

stronghunter said...

I'm impressed. I have never installed a radiator. Maybe my daughter could; she knows a lot about cars. She's the office manager in a body shop.

stronghunter said...

Sharon, I wha trying to figure out what's in your picture. I see it's two cute little doggies.

T-Bird said...

Sharon, you can do anything once you set your mind to it can't you?!

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

T-Bird, you are absolutely right. Where there's a will, there's an "A"! Might have to follow instructions sometimes though! :)

Brother is supposed to come tomorrow to work on some plumbing problems I have. If he doesn't come tomorrow, I am just going to do it myself. I have done plumbing before. The main thing in a house that I won't mess with is electricity. Way out of my league.

movin said...

My very first car was a 51 Ford with a stick shift, and after about 75K miles, it developed a "no turn over, no start" with a very meaningful clicking sound when you tried to start it.

It was a broken "Bendix spring", which engages or disengages the starter gear to or from the flywheel gear. I forget who we learned that from, but several people knew about the problem in that vintage of Ford.

For quite a while we either couldn't afford to get it fixed or were not inclined to fix it yet....
So, every morning I would put the car in 3rd gear and release the hand brake; then I would get out and walk in front of the car, turn my back, stoop down and grab the bumber. Then I would "rock" the car back and forth until I heard the Bendix gear click into the proper position....

I'd jump back in, push the clutch in, crank it over, and away we went.

movin said...

I don't think you need to bang your starter with a hammer, Sharon, since your starter turns over.

Sometimes if the problem is burned contacts in your solenoid, banging that gently with a hammer or a crescent wrench will unstick the solenoid. That will work for a while, but you should replace the solenoid as soon as possible, since the burnt contacts will not get better, but they will get worse.

I once had a Volvo with a manual choke. Because I drove it every day, I knew just how much to pull out that choke and just when to adjust it based on how the car was acting. My husband never figured it out. He tried kicking the car, but that never worked. I loved that car. He never appreciated it.

stronghunter said...

Jim, I would be a little worried about getting in front of a car in gear with the brake off.

movin said...

How long has it been since you had a tune up??

Your mechanic should be able to hook your car up to the diagnostic computer and get it back starting and running without too much trouble. At the very least, he'll be able to tell you the cause.

I used to work on them quite a bit before all this electronic stuff and when they had carburetors, but it's a whole different ball game now. Unless you've got the right equipment and some training, it's better to find a good professional and stick with him.

My current car is a Dodge, and my dealer has been excellent and more reasonably priced than many in the old days, so I'm still taking it there.

movin said...

Stronghunter, I had the Ford "in gear" and it was in safe situation, which would take too long to explain here.

We finally took it to a local shop, and the mechanic pulled the starter, replaced the Bendix spring, reinstalled the starter and charged us $20...about. The car started like new until the day we traded it ... at least another 25K.

But that was in the mid 50's, and $20 was worth at least 200 in today's money. That's probably why we delayed getting it fixed so long.

I had a couple of English sport cars, with manual chokes just like that Volvo.

I remember my 66 TR4-A (Triumph). You had to finesse the thing, pushing it in gradually to keep the engine running right. Then you had to know when it was warmed up enough to run without choke and push it "all the way in."

If you didn't do it right, it would buck and cough and probably die when you started from a stop.

A fine art, but if you got it right, it would run like a jeweled watch.

Lynn, Wanda...

I do remember vapor lock, Lynn, but that cure is a new one on me. ]:~D] Buicks used to get that for years, until they figured out their fuel line ran too close to the exhaust manifold, which vaporized the fuel. Once they rerouted that line, the problem disappeared.

Yes, Wanda, we all had standard transmissions and lived on a hill, so if we had a weak battery or left the lights on (not easy with no street lights out in the country) or the regulator points stuck and drained the battery, we would get it rolling downhill, put it in second gear, and when we got up some speed, let the clutch out....fired up like a champ.

Wlllll, I'm back from a lovely (if wet) trip to the "Panhandle" of WVa. Thanks to those that emailed me the phone numbers! I didn't get them in time but talked the guard into letting me onto the campus for a while (kinda scary since 2001 what ya gotta go thru to get onto a Fed. property! He wanted 2 forms of picture ID, which I feared would sink my boat, but I found an old faculty I.D.in the back seat and that did the trick. I also whined a lot about showingthe birds to my students for the last 4 years, etc. Actually, what really got me in was that my boyfriend is an ironworker on a huge project in Martinsburg (you can see the cranes for miles)and the guard was a former ironworker...I think their bonding over their manly deeds was the real clincher!!)

Anywho...a surprise for me was the campus...really lovely and well-tended, much like a college campus. I had always pictured a more rustic look, like a farm (probably from viewing the outbuidings below over the years) but it is really very nice. I was fortunate to see Hidey ligering for a bit before he took off for a cooler location and (I think) Belle bring in lunch (I was there Monday morning from about 10:00 until 11...I went early as they were calling for SERIOUS storms that afternoon.) It was incredibly hot by late morning, so I think Hidey headed for the river. It really is a thrill to actually see that huge Sycamore looming ahead of you.

Afterwards we headed into Shepardstown to look around. I was so impressed! It is a gorgeously restored colonial college town with one of the prettiest old courthouses I've ever seen!I talked with a lady in the visitor's center who retired there from Annapolis...she said it's much cheaper to live there than Annapolis. I know it is really a gem...very artsy with galleries galore. The architecture is just fabulous! If you go, stay at the Bavarian Inn...beautiful grounds and we had a delicious lunch there.

We also rounded out the trip with Harper's Ferry (somehow I was dissapointed...after hearing of it for 50 years I guess I expected more, but the town doesn't exist really anymore, just a tourist park. Charles Town was not exciting..nice, but "normal" as no racing was held this week.I was impressed with Martinsburg...smallish city with, again, great architecture. Because of the railroad, most of these areas were very prosperous during the Victorian periods, so the homes reflect it and the former railroad wealth was evident everywhere. I understand that Martinsburg was also once an important milling town.

I tried to get around as much as possible on Monday as I knew bad weather was coming, and come it did. I worried so for the eagles Monday nite as we had a ferociously bad thunderstorm with bolts zinging around (simply LOVELY camping weather!)It rained again Tuesday afternoon...heavy rain but thankfully no lightening. I think this is just a rainy period! NOT a great time to be camping...my hair looked like Janis Joplin!

Anyhoo, I do hope many of you get to visit them someday...maybe the open house this fall!! I know I'll try to get up for it again so I can see more of the inner workings.I loved it!

The Owl Prowl was GREAT! The DNR ranger did a fantastic presentation and we met a Great Horned, Screech, Bar and Barred Owl. All injured and not able to be released. Then we went looking and heard then saw a Barred Owl, and heard 2 baby owls!!

Susan, so glad you had such a good trip to our little corner of the world (and state). The NCTC campus IS magnificent...our tax dollars at work in a really good way! That storm Monday was rough....thankfully it wasn't one that lingered---sometimes a storm will bounce back and forth between the mountains east of CharlesTown and west of Martinsburg for hours! Agree...not the best camping weather!

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

Susan, I am so glad to hear that your trip to the sycamore tree was a success. It really does give you a different perspective on things when you actually see it for yourself!

Costume Lady said...

Where did you camp, Susan?

movin said...

Well, ladies, I lived in Del Mar, which was/is a resort town, and so the gas prices would go up and down according to the number of tourists passing through... as high as 33¢/gal for regular in winter, and as low as 27¢ in summer at the Chevron. [Del Mar was on Highway 101 before freeways in the area, and all major traffic north and south moved on 101. We had 9 gas stations at the peak.]

Later, they built a Hancock station which was self service and had a pump with perhaps 6 different grades and prices, most of them below 25¢.

I don't know about back East, but stations in So Cal used to have "gas wars' where one would drop it's prices to say 20¢, and then another would follow suit and so forth. You might wind up driving 15-20 miles to fill up at 17¢.

Then they would have to raise the price again to pay the bills; until somebody would start the war over again.......

Costumee lady,
It's not a "real" campsite in the normal sense..it's just out of town on Rt 7 E...right past "Taboo" ;=);Indian name starts with a "N..." right where the construction starts on the road and it narrows to two lanes....sorry, brain fart tonite about the name.Look to the left and you'll see about 80 RV's in the field. It's really just a field that someone started renting at a cheap rate for the out-of-town construction workers. It only has electric, but they're only there at night and bring their RV's. You can get a spot (in the grass!) for around $400 a month and you pay extra for your own electricity. Not my fav, but Rick says he doesn't need the bells and whistles.A tree sure would be nice! I'd spend a lot more time up there with him if it had a pool and access to the internet! But the thought of sitting there alone and without the internet ;=( is a tad gruesome. I will go up regularly to keep his morale up. He's never worked out of town much...really hates it, but with this economy there's not much work going on down here.

It really is a lovely area tho...very much like dow nhere where I live (Amherst, VA).

Hi, Everyone,
I'm finally back-- have been napping for most of the day, off & on. Just thought I'd take a quick peek at the nest and see how everybody is doing. Read backwards a bit on the blog, and am getting quite a kick out of the car stories! I remember when my parents bought my grandparents' '50 Ford-- it was pea soup green, and in fantastic condition. I put 8 coats of Blue Coral wax on it for my Dad to earn a bit of extra cash. Boy, did that baby shine! Wish I still had it.
I see that Spidey has been busy again tonight. Is that Hidey at about 4:00? Can't quite tell. I've had a bit of trouble with the new cam arrangement. Right now I don't seem to have any sound, although I did before I refreshed the picture. The barber pole thing is pretty common, too. However, it's better than not having any picture! Guess I should just be patient, and maybe they'll get it fixed eventually. Well, I think I'm going to go and read for a while, and see if I can get more caught up on sleep. Gotta go check out the house in the high desert tomorrow, so better be really alert. (Sure hope there's no fog!)Jim, you probably heard about the big pileup on the I-15. Beats me why people go so fast when they can't see where they're going at all! Well, prayers for healing where needed, for needs being met, for a good night's rest for all, and for Deb and family, the peace that only the Lord can give. G'night, all. :o]

hedgie said...

Yep, I was real close---h instead of n--Nahkeeta. Susan, in addition to the commuter traffic--which is bumper-to-bumper from Mtbg. almost to Leesburg, VA where dual lane highway starts from about 5-7am and back inthe evening--there is heavy local traffic from Mtbg. to the VA Center and the Coast Guard Center and the IRS just a little ways east of the campground!
Goodnight all. Prayers for all in need.

movin said...

Megan, I can't tell you how many times I've been in that exact situation with the jobs and money... kinda glad to be getting old enough to do other things.

Hang in there, do some praying, and things will get better.

It sure is a good time to get a new Detroit vehicle though, and they need the business for sure.

I'm thinking of scraping up some cash, if I can, and replacing my 86 Jeep Cherokee, which is still basically alright, but it needs "stuff" ... tires, new window tint (delaminates after 15-16 years), new paint, new thermostat, new A/C (if I could afford it). It has a 5-speed manual and roll-up windows.

My Dodge SRT-4 was only built with a HD 5-speed trans, luckily. Dealers around here, thinking they make more money on automatics, only order vehicles with autos. I really hate that on vehicles that are for utility or economy purposes, but you might have to go out of the area to buy one with a stick.
Jeep Patriot, and a few other models, have a CV (constant velocity) auto, which works on a different principle than most autos, and which gets the same gas mileage as their 5-speed. I tried one with the "auto stick" feature when I was having my Dodge serviced, and I liked it at least as well as a standard automatic....

I'm getting kind of tired too, better cut this short (hahaha).

Hey, you guys! I just discovered something purely by accident-- I went to refresh the cam picture, and accidentally hit the button to the left of the 'refresh' button. It says 'Compatibility View', and explains: "websites designed for older browsers will often look better, and problems such as out-of-place menus, images or text will be corrected." In any case, I have sound again! Others who have been having problems might want to see if it helps. Well, g'night all.

Good Night You Night Owls. I am putting up some pictures and cooking fresh green beans.

Like your words of inspiration, Jim and Andrea... nice way to end the evening. Sleep Sweetly.

Hmmm. Magpie, are you using Explorer?? I don't see that on FireFox.

I learned that when my 15 minutes are up, it's faster and surer to work if I click "Back" on the browzer and then just click on that link again. Works with sound and the whole 9 yards every time.

Hedgie and Magpie,
I was amazed at the amount of traffic on Rt9E! Coming back up from Charles Town solved the mystery...I saw the VA facility..didn't know about the IRS.I figured some drove down to NorVa to work. After my separation the first guy I dated was an old high school flame that now lives near Purcellville. It always amazed me how many people he knew from the Martinsburg/Charles Town area! His office manager of his company lived in Middletown!I tend to forget how far people will travel into a huge metro area to work (even tho I have family in Fredericksburg that commute into DC...a terrible traffic situation every morning and nite!) That being said, the traffic is non-stop (could hear it in the camper!) and amazing in numbers!

PS I liked a restaurant near there...The Hanger...great crab-stuffed flounder! Yum!

Oooops Jim- that was Andrea aka Ms. Bookworm about the buttons things. But yes, I am using Explorer. But I haven't tried those tricks yet.

Yumm, beans were good and pics are up on Wildflowers and Feathers links.
Just a few...
Oh yeah, Hedgie filled in the blanks on the rest of the traffic story! Enjoy your stay in Berkeley County, Susan.

Thinking of Deb and her family, and taking a couple of handfuls of prayers to bed soon....

All right now, two chicks being fed at Finney Land Nest, they were hatched on June 5 and June 6 -

magpie said...

Finney just updated their little note on there today, could not see about that second chick until now ☺ ☺
It's kinda hard to see two, but I can now...

magpie said...

Correction! Those chicks hatched on June 9 and June 10 !

Some of the minor negs are no washcloths, no loungechairs to decompress your legs & one of the worst (no paper allowed in potties)!
Night & prayers for all & We Love the USA!

Just threw together a microwave dinner, which turned out pretty good.

About 4" length of Kielbasa, a extra big ration of brown rice, and a few spoonfuls of Boston baked beans... pretty tasty.

Bravo! Really nice photographs of your vacation!

Jim Bravo! Sounds like a very tasty creation.

I guess I am keeping California hours, time to convert back to Eastern Standard time and hit the sack.
Good Night,
Peace, Love and Prayers

Andrea... I can absolutely relate to you and your trip to Riverside !!

It sounds exactly like something that might have happened to me...

Your heart was in the right place, and you tried to "get it done." That's what matters.

I hope it went better for Deb and she makes it back home in good order.
