KAREN!---These EAGLE parents-- BELLE & LIBERTY--are wonderful--so patient with their young--but 1st time we have seen one so SPOILED! ho!---maybe because she has never had to share!! ho!
been there for 3 years...been on a leave of abcess for last 6 weeks, on my way to do cam duty I fell and fractured my ribs, been a slow healing process, but am headed back to the zoo on Wednesday
I know it was more that 3 years ago. She loves the pandas and elephants. She's too busy with work and school to volunteer now, but she enjoyed being there.
they have been doing a lot, have you been to the Asian Trail....thank heavens some of the bldgs were named historical and will not be torn down....it is a beautiful zoo...
Morning all. I was watching the Hancock eaglet this morning and it was doing a Hidey. Yelling for food. Parents were not there. If you have not seen it Loretta AKA Nature nut has a great picture of the moon from the plane. Loretta glad you are back. Missed you and hope to see pictures of your trip soon.
Yesterday, Friday, Karen and I went back to the site and erected a supportive net I had developed the previous night -- partly in reality and partly in my sleep! In the morning I got it completed and Karen and I took a couple of short ladders and all the trappings and girded the tree with a fine protective net. At least I hope it is fine. It looks like it would save a chick coming directly down from the nest. Of course, if the chick has a lot of wing feathers and falls out or is pushed out at that stage no net will help. At that stage the chick is going to do some gliding away from the nest and, like last year, probably be ok.
My placement of the net around the base of the tree did not appear to involve any undue apprehension for the eagles as they see dozens of people per hours standing and gawking up at them from the road at the nest tree base. At the same time we have greatly reduced the potential catastrophe of the second chick also falling and killing itself. Of course we have not gone up to the nest and it remains small, fragile and a rotting structure. The rapid nest rotting that takes place in these suburban cottonwoods is hard to imagine. The branches disintegrate into rotted pulp in about 2 to 3 years. A nest built on Douglas Fir or Cedar branches has decades of lasting power. I think it is not uncommon for a fir or cedar tree to support a nest for 100 years. It is unfortunate we humans have removed most of the good nesting trees.
Bev Day of OWL is only a mile away and will be there at the first phone call of trouble -- thanks Bev. Let's wish the chick well.
That Delta nest does look bad. I think the Oklahoma nest looks interesting. It is built on a man-made structure out in the water. Is that structure designed for eagle nests to be built on it?
Good morning, the rain is done again for awhile. More coming in later. I remember the eaglets last year having short battles over fish. I think Paula has video. I will see if I do, but I don't think I do.

This nest is on OG&E property at Sooner Lake north of Stillwater, Oklahoma. The original dead nest tree used by this pair of eagles fell down. OG&E, with technical assistance from the Sutton Center and financial assistance from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, erected an artificial tower which these eagles have adopted successfully.
Hidey is using those skills that will best help him/her to survive when on its own. If there were more eaglets in nest. They would be stealing from one another and then mantling their food. AND SCREAMING! lol
Good morning all. Been lurking while reading paper, eating breakfast and cleaning up kitchen. Loretta, so glad that you are home from your wonderful trip! Can't wait to see more pics----the moon was beautiful! One of my very favorite things to do is to fly into the ol' hometown at night---the most beautiful city in the world! Welcome Old World Charm.....would love to see pics of your home---I have a log home, too...my second one! First one--pre-divorce--was a 3500+ sq. ft. that we custom designed and built. Now I have a small 900+ sq.ft. (before I added sunroom and not counting partially finished basement) "cabin". See that you are a kayaker----our Deb is, too!
Good morning everyone. We jut got home from Pipestem. Went to the pool yesterday got a little pink! :) Went to the concert last night and it was wonderful. The last song they play is always Stars and Stripes and there is a huge flag that is raised at the back of the stage and I, for the third time, helped raise it! :)
I'm going to try leaving the sound on and try to get some things done, too. I sometimes worry that George will attack my computer because of the bird sounds coming out, but so far he hasn't gone to that extent. He just does some cat typing by walking on the keyboard.
I want to thank you all for showing me the Pete's Pont site. I sent it to my children. I have a friend who visits Africa every summer who will probably like it too.
Well we just got a last minute invite to PA for Ed's grandson's 18th birthday....just something quick thrown together. Due to church for him and work there just wasn't much free time. So up we go!! See ya'll later.
Oh, in case you want to see my avatar in full, it is availble for download at the FWS website. Pic is by FWS employee Dave Menke. I have cropped it...shows an eagle ready to land in a nest. It's a beautiful, large picture. Great for a screensaver! Download the biggest pic they have!
hOPE some of you can see the chicks at BWO, but I'm not seeing anything there right now...sticks, sticks, sticks. hahaha.
There was one picture the other day, which had been edited and had arrows pointed to the two chicks, that I could see them fairly clearly in. But I can't find that picture now.
Hey everyone! I see Hidey is in our nest right now and making a lot of noises. She must really be hungry! My cats look at my computer too when Hidey is making all that noise. Occasionally they walk on the keyboard. Hope everyone is havine a magical Sunday.
Sorry, had to run to Wal-Mart. Lynn, Andrew is in the East River Mountain Town Band and they performed last night at the amphitheater at Pipestem. It was great. They also play "Armed Forces Salute" and the director has veterans and family members stand up whenever the theme song for their branch of the military is played. I always stand up for the US Navy in memory of Daddy. It is really touching. They will be performing a patriotic show at Pipestem on July 4 and that will be Andrew's performance with the band since he is moving away. :( * * *
Hi again...I wrote in yesterday that I was gonna try to visit this week, and Deb suggested I email Mema Jo for Steve's secretary's number, but I think she must be busy this weekend as I haven't heard back. I'd getting ready to leave soon and might not have internet accesss once up there (camping south of Martinsburg in berkeley County), so I guess maybe I can get in touch with Steve from the gate? (I emailed him to tell the gate I'll be there late monday or early Tues... depending on weather..supposed to be stormy there tomorrow).
Do any of you live nearby that I can call and get her number? I'm going to go take a shower and leave here (down near Lynchburg) around 3. I'll check posts after my shower.
Also, I can't get the live cam feed here at home. I am on thet phone dialup...is there a special program I need to see it? I always got it at the school.
I am so excited about seeing the babies..I even dreamed of it!
oH yeah.... Norma, what happened to our pick in the Belmont !!??
I was reading this A.M. that only 6 of the last 30 Belmont favorites have won the race. And I can't recall how many hopes for a Triple Crown winner have been wrecked by a long shot horse at the Belmont.
If you are a serious better, you might be able to strike it rich with that knowledge.
I finally satisfied my need for a Megan Peony Bouquet and got three new plants to plant, also her Mom was there, nice to see her again after meeting her last year on NCTC Open House day. Went to the Fish Hatchery in Leetown hoping to see an Osprey or two, didn't, but did see some Belted Kingfishers and more Cedar Waxwings. Then I saw four soaring Red-Tailed Hawks not far from the Hatchery...
Forgot to mention I saw a beautiful Orchard Oriole hanging around at Back Creek last night.
ON "Car Talk" on NPR this morning, one of the callers from Houston, was Jim Rumsfeld (>) - not sure of the spelling but he was one of the Astronauts on the last mission! He was asking about how to remove broken bolts. (Remember the broken bolt on the ISS ??) It was a scream! ☺

Ya wanna look EAST for that moon tonight, opposite from the sunset in the West...sometimes it sneaks a little to the Southeast or Northeast....it always surprises me every month!
Good Afternoon Everyone in Eagleland! Was sitting at 'puter reading stuff & realized I need to have my feet up. Seems airplane must do a number on lower extremities-duh! One foot really swollen & that leg feels like pins & needles. Gonna get in the loungechair. Did not see one Lazyboy overseas! In the near future I hope to put my flora & fauna pics from Greece here on the blog as there aren't too many. Will try to post some other Greek sites on a Picasa album if I can figure that out! Also have to see if 'puter can handle all those pics----more than 1 Gig to transfer from USB stick & camera. To the chair, see ya later---glad to be back among such a great group of friends ☺!
Darn, I missed the landing while reading the blog! Have seen some take-offs but waiting for the landing show... Taking a chance on missing a takeoff or parent entrance right now..wish I could read and blog at once....Hidey is ravenous, where are you mom and dad???
Hope you stayed on long enough, Loretta, to see all the OOOHS and AAAAHS about the Moon and Plane Wing picture! Hope the lower extremities improve soon, so I won't say "I hope Wellness Swells" this time.
Carol I am the same way. Blog, post, then peek, blog, post then peek. Some can keep the cam up too so you will get some suggestions, but I couldn't get it to work for me :(
I will try, Carol. Someone else may have a better method. I bring up the picture, then scan down so I can just see the top of the link to the blog. Then I click on the squares at the top of the screen that makes the screen smaller, whatever that is called. Once you have the two parts smaller, you can squeeze them until each part takes only half the screen. This is probably very confusing.
I knew you would get some good advice Carol ! That's just the way it goes around here. ! I have a bunch of tabs ready to switch from one to the other but that's about it for me. I've missed a bunch of stuff, especially when the computer freezes up !

So they don't all have tantrums the way Hidey does?
she is doing better all the time, Norma
Welcome home Loretta, glad you are back safe and sound:)
Mits, have you been at the National Zoo for long?
FINNEY'S OSPREY CAM still is not fixed:(
Was wondering if you would have met my daughter. She was there several years ago. I guess about 1999-2000, but I am not sure.
been there for 3 years...been on a leave of abcess for last 6 weeks, on my way to do cam duty I fell and fractured my ribs, been a slow healing process, but am headed back to the zoo on Wednesday
then she was before my time, where did she voulunteer?
I know it was more that 3 years ago. She loves the pandas and elephants. She's too busy with work and school to volunteer now, but she enjoyed being there.
I will have to ask her about it, Mits. I think she spent time with the elephants. She was very young, just out of high school.
Elephants are getting a brand new habitat, going to be spectacular
That is good. Some of the exhibits really need to be updated.
She has a small zoo of her own now--two cats and two chinchillas in an apartment.
they have been doing a lot, have you been to the Asian Trail....thank heavens some of the bldgs were named historical and will not be torn down....it is a beautiful zoo...
she sure does:)
Will have to go back this summer. It has been awhile.
well off to get ready, going to brunch in Annapolis....
Good Sunday Morning All !
Heading out shortly for a Birthday Breakfast & Party for the 3 yr old ggd, Sophia! Doing a Hello Kitty decor

Further Delta 1 Nest Update: posted Sat. June 6
Thanks for posting, Paula.
Hopefully it won't be needed but such a great idea.

Shirley, It is probably more for osprey but the eagles took over. After the osprey leave BWO the eagles come in to eat their food there
Yes it was Shirley. Their original nest was in a tree that fell down, so they erected this platform for them before that occured.
Headed westward out of here - BBL
Good morning sister.
I see the OK closeup cam is working again.
From their website -
This nest is on OG&E property at Sooner Lake north of Stillwater, Oklahoma. The original dead nest tree used by this pair of eagles fell down.
OG&E, with technical assistance from the Sutton Center and financial assistance from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service,
erected an artificial tower which these eagles have adopted successfully.
Thanks. I went back and read the info at the site and see that it's explained there as well. I couldn't think what else it could be. What a good idea.
Paula thanks. I did not know that it looks more like an osprey nest.
Have a great day everyone.
CU LATER, CEIL:)
feeding BWO
Adult our nest!
Adult in the nest eating.
Eating a fish...Hidey must not be close by...think this is Liberty
Think Hidey is nearby after all! Good grief!
And who should appear, but Hidey my dear...
Had a hold of Libs talons...looking for the fish...adult just took off!
Think adult left with the fish..
Really hard to see the osprey chicks at BWO
Not even a "thank you" from Hidey!
Maybe adult did take fish. Maybe that's why Hidey had hold of the talons. Serves her right, for heaven's sake.
Hidey just took off...adult must have been hungry...you have to realize they have to eat too! Can't fish for the youngster when you don't eat!
When will Hidey be ready to fish for herself?
I would hope the adults have a quiet place to eat unmolested by this wild child.
Both parents at BWO
Hidey will probably be fishing later this summer.
Good Morning ALL in Eagleland and those watchers...lots of comments I read ( :
Welcome Home Loretta
It is hard for me to see the chicks on BWO. Been watching for the 3rd hatch. I read we might have a 3rd GOOD.
I expect Hidey will be a good fisher.
You can seee a chick at BWO
Hidey is using those skills that will best help him/her to survive when on its own. If there were more eaglets in nest. They would be stealing from one another and then mantling their food. AND SCREAMING! lol
Hidey in
Sort a crash in the nest by Hidey...big mantling sound!
But no food...guess calling for food!
Exactly what is mantling? Looked it up, but still not sure.
Paula in some ways it is so different watching just one in the nest. Isn't it?
Dana did you see the chick at BWO? Had it's head way up
Hidey on the far side at 2
Mantling is when they spread their wings and body over the food to claim it as theirs.
Lots of peeping accompanies mantling :):)
Hidey just took off
Thanks, and the screaming is also sometimes called mantling because it is part of the whole picture?
No Paula haven't seen the little darln yet at BWO. So excited for Lisa that all three Osprey eggs hatched. Last season was such a bad season for her.
Yes it is, Dana.
Nope, screaming is just screaming :)
Good morning all. Been lurking while reading paper, eating breakfast and cleaning up kitchen.

Hidey has the screaming part down for sure.
I think I got a couple of pics where you can see the chicks at BWO

OK, got to go do some stuff...will leave the sound turned up!
Feeding at BWO...chick visible!
Well it was...keep looking!
Good morning everyone. We jut got home from Pipestem. Went to the pool yesterday got a little pink! :) Went to the concert last night and it was wonderful. Cool, Sharon. That sounds like a wonderful program.

What concert, Shar??? Something that Andrew was in??
I want to thank you all for showing me the Pete's Pont site. I sent it to my children. I have a friend who visits Africa every summer who will probably like it too.
That's Pete's Pond
Good beautiful morning Paula, Dana, Deb, Lynn and Strong...
Good morning Lori.
I've missed Hidey! Is he still hanging out.
Was just checking around at all the eagle nests and not a single baby in any of the first five a looked at -- well, WE Catalina is offline.
Paula, really like your new pic/avatar!
Osprey on the cam at BWO, gone already, at least its feathers are gone.
Well we just got a last minute invite to PA for Ed's grandson's 18th birthday....just something quick thrown together. Due to church for him and work there just wasn't much free time. So up we go!! See ya'll later.
Oh thanks Paula for the chicks BWO
Deb if I didn't say it before. I LOVE THE PICTURE OUT THE PLANE WINDOW AWESOME LADY ( :
Dana, you mean Loretta, and I agree totally with you!
Hi, Lori! Bye, Dana!
Deb, did you see that Old World Charm is a kayaker? Lives on Long Island.
Have fun, Dana.
Lori, how are ya? Got your pics done yet? :):)
I missed the Kayaking part, but loved the pond in her yard. She and Lolly would be great neighbors for each other.

Oops, forgot to add, search for bald eagle on the link page...should be on the first page, about 2/3 the way down the page.
BBL......
I am off, too. I have some errands to run today, then I have to pack.
Okay, I'm ready to get busy, too. See all y'all later!!
Had to go throw the ball for the dogs and fill the feeders. Only took the birds 5 minutes to discover they were full again, LOL
sounds near the mic

BBL me too.
Sorry to have disappeared - neighbor dropped by.
Have a great afternoon Lynn & Paula. GArdening to do now. :)
Oh Mits - Hello if you're still on.
Thought Hidey had landed at the nest, but must have just been very nearby. Sounds like Hidey is talking to parents.
Hi Jim - I forget you're on CA time!
Have a great day. Let Hidey know I've missed him should he pop in again.
I think Hidey wants attention.
Hidey in nest. Screaming
Sounds so pittiful.
Hey everyone! I see Hidey is in our nest right now and making a lot of noises. She must really be hungry! My cats look at my computer too when Hidey is making all that noise. Occasionally they walk on the keyboard. Hope everyone is havine a magical Sunday.

Good morning/afternoon, everyone!
Wow, I showed up just at the right time-- got to see Hidey, and got to see a takeoff!
I'm busier than a one-armed paper hanger this morning, what with Jake the pup AND a bunch of Keyboarding homework! 14 pages of keyboard drills to do!
I'm gonna hit the road running, so to speak, and get the homework done, so I can blog! Jake's taking a nap, so now's my chance.
Have a great day! BBL :o]

And I don't think you'll be able to get the live feed on dialup.
But you can probably access the still cam at least...

Good afternoon! Just a quick peek in. Just got home from church and now heading out to a wedding shower.
Welcome home Loreeda! Looking forward to seeing your pictures and and hearing all about your trip!
Looks like there is a newbie on here that is a gardener and a yard person like me. Need to see pictures!
Okay, Gotta run! Will be back later on this afternoon or evening!

Taking a break...nest is nice and shady...
Somehow, Jim, I am afraid I would not be able to rate myself a serious better. I would most likely lose everything I bet.
Doesn't seem to be anything going on here in the nest right now. Wonder where they are at? BBL
I finally satisfied my need for a Megan Peony Bouquet and got three new plants to plant, also her Mom was there, nice to see her again after meeting her last year on NCTC Open House day.

Sounds like a tip top concert, Sharon !
Hi Everyone...
Feeding at BWO - I can see two chicks, sort of...
ON "Car Talk" on NPR this morning, one of the callers from Houston, was Jim Rumsfeld (>) - not sure of the spelling but he was one of the Astronauts on the last mission! He was asking about how to remove broken bolts. (Remember the broken bolt on the ISS ??)
It was a scream!
☺
** Remember ** we have a Full M☺☺n tonight! Megan told us it is the Strawberry Moon! So get your peepers out shortly after sunset - - ☺
I don't think it could look prettier than the one Loretta got on film last night though!Find a post from NatureNut from last night, click on her name, then go to NatureNut's Nook - you will fall over !
xo
Ya wanna look EAST for that moon tonight, opposite from the sunset in the West...sometimes it sneaks a little to the Southeast or Northeast....it always surprises me every month!
We'd be pretty surprised if it came up looking like a Strawberry ! ☺
NO adults at BWO
I think the astronaut's name was JOHN GRUNSFELD - not Jim Rumsfeld...
Adult back at BWO and I hear some peeping at our nest - maybe it is just another NCTC bird...
Finally found Loretta's picture of the moon. It is beautiful. I'll be looking for the moon tonight.
I see that Hidey is back. I bet she is looking for something to eat.
The Eaglet has landed !
I think, empty-taloned...
Hidey is peeping for lunch!
Hidey is claiming your turtle shell Bibee !
Hidey is playing with the turtle shell...
The one you have to arm-wrestle Jo for ! ☺

To the chair, see ya later---glad to be back among such a great group of friends ☺!
I see TWO chicks for sure, can't place a get on a third one yet... at BWO
Darn, I missed the landing while reading the blog! Have seen some take-offs but waiting for the landing show... Taking a chance on missing a takeoff or parent entrance right now..wish I could read and blog at once....Hidey is ravenous, where are you mom and dad???
Carol, you can put them side by side.
You got that right, Margy!
Flipped it over again...
Ruh roh, it's near the edge!
need instructions for simultaneous eaglet viewing and blogging. Thanks in advance :-)
The shell is on the sticks at 9ish,
Hidey is laying down facing 6
Hope you stayed on long enough, Loretta, to see all the OOOHS and AAAAHS about the Moon and Plane Wing picture! Hope the lower extremities improve soon, so I won't say "I hope Wellness Swells" this time.
Carol I am the same way. Blog, post, then peek, blog, post then peek. Some can keep the cam up too so you will get some suggestions, but I couldn't get it to work for me :(
Carol,
Shrink the blog page and came page so they are side by side...
Up and peeping and flew off...maybe parent near!
Wow! Interesting Launch Pad! I was lucky enough to see landing and take off this time
Hope he is not up there beak-wrestling an adult for food !
Ruckus above the cam!
Carol - you have to open one or the other in a new window, not just a new tab. Then grab the corner of the page with your mouse and shrink it.
He might get sent to the corner if he is !
Good to you Paula, Shirley, Katherine, and Carol.... fun to share the fun with friends.
I got to hit the sack, working tonight at midnight and didn't sleep much overnight.
Best wishes for continued Hidey Fun ! xoxo ☺ ♥
Sometimes I have three screens going at once. I am not sure how to explain it, but I could show you in a minute.
...good to SEE YOU that would be.
I knew you would get some good advice Carol ! That's just the way it goes around here. ! I have a bunch of tabs ready to switch from one to the other but that's about it for me. I've missed a bunch of stuff, especially when the computer freezes up !
xo
