Morning all:) UH, ok...pass me a piece of that pineapple upside down cake.. sunny and 73° here, not too bad outside, changing the food in the hummer feeders, gotta do it quick, those little buggers get feisty when their feeder disapears.
Good morning, Norma! Hope we all have a great day. Mits, I would love to be on that balcony having coffee with you and the dolphins this morning.

MORNIN' MEGAN!!---It's going to be a fairly nice day---low humidity!-----terrible yesterday!!---Should I throw out my humming bird stuff??---They have quit coming---noticed a wasp or 2---yesterday--
Thanks Magpie, thanks for doing what you do at the VA- it's so important. Hello Sissy, Norma, Mits, Dave and SHaron!
Norma, when it is warm, you should change the sugar water in your feeder every two or three days, it will spoil and then they won't drink it.
BYE MARGY!---I thought you had gone!!---Wonderful of you to go to the VA Center----Many moons ago I went there a few times---They so appreciated our coming to visit!!!
THANKS MEGAN!!---Will do!---What about the wasps?
MARGY---Did you check those 'darling little chimney swifts'?----CUTIES!!!
take your cane out with you Norma, and when you see a wasp...slap him silly;)
It was recently discovered that bees and wasps are attracted to the color yellow. Since many hummingbird feeders have yellow plastic "flowers" or other parts, try removing such parts or painting them red before hanging your feeder in the spring - once bees learn where food is, they fly right back to the hive to tell all their friends, so avoiding their attention up front works best.If wasps persist, first try moving the feeder, even just a few feet; insects are not very smart, and will assume the food source is gone forever. They may never find it in its new location, while the hummers will barely notice that it was moved. If that doesn't work, take the feeder down for a day, or until you stop seeing wasps looking for it. You'll see hummers looking for it, too, but they won't give up nearly as soon as the wasps
man those bees and wasps are smart little buggers;)
I wonder who interviewed the bees and wasp to learn that info;)?
Thanks MEGAN!---Last year was the first year to have a feeder---now I have 2---Thanks--
WHOA!!! HELEN---did your MOM never tell you about the BIRDS & the BEES --- & WASPS???? ho!
#@*#@* -got shocked by the electric fence when I was hanging the last feeder- ow... good thing hubby isn't here, he'd be rolling on ground laughing- he's always asking me to check and see if the fence is working.. yep- it is..
omg, you poor thing.....
It ain't that bad, always scares me more than anything.. last fall hubby gave me the fence tester which shows how much shock the fence is putting out- and I can't find it- so he says I have to be his fence tester... ha ha- he usually gets shocked way more than me, and yep, I usaully laugh at him when it happens..
Here's the hummer food recipe I've always used, Norma. Use one part ordinary white cane sugar to four parts water. It's not necessary to boil the water. The microorganisms that cause fermentation don't come from the water; they are transported to the feeder on hummingbird bills. Store unused syrup in the refrigerator for up to two weeks. This mixture approximates the average sucrose content (about 21%) of the flowers favored by North American hummingbirds, without being so sweet it attracts too many insects.
July 9 Tai Shan turned three today! He enjoyed a special fruitcicle made of water and gelatin in the shape of a three. He also received two tiered fruitcicles made of water, bamboo leaves, and various fruits and vegetables. Thanks to everyone who came to the Zoo today to celebrate the big day, and to the hundreds of you who have sent him birthday wishes online.Get Tai Shan birthday wallpaper for your computer with your donation to the Giant Panda Conservation Fund. Thanks also to hundreds of donors who are helping the Wolong Giant Panda Breeding Center recover from earthquake damage. We have received more than $55,000 and are grateful for your generosity. This fundraising initiative will end July 15, so if you have not yet made a contribution, please donate today.
omg, floralgirl, are you okay? those things scare me half to death. And it really isn't necessary to boil tap water, city water?
The BB (BIRTHDAY BOY) is strolling around his estate!!---Do you suppose he is hunting another HUGE POPSCICLE?----He just found balloons in a tree---climbed up & hit them--then walked away----Maybe he is just bored today?----POOR BABY!!!----
He looks like he is in time out in the corner.
Yep, I'm okay, just a little zap and then a shout from me, no biggie. I hate electric fence, and that is is all around my gardens, but it is the only way we have been able to keep the deer out- and sometimes they get through anyway. www.hummingbirds.net has a lot of good info about hummers.
Thanks MEGAN---I thought you had to boil your water!!----I do store in fridge!!---
Morning, all!Another busy one here today...can't believe it's Thursday already!
Lisa has updated the Osprey cam log...
I don't think it hurts if you bring the water to a slight boil, it seems to help the sugar dissolve, I've seen it witten both ways, so whatever works for you is good. The most important thing is do not add red food coloring to the mix, and change your food often.
off to farmers mkt....be back later
THANK YOU , SHARON:)
SISSY & SHARON---I have a friend who--along with sister & 2 grand- kids are coming to BLUEFIELD tomorrow!!---Are there any places you all would recommend they see!----only staying till Sunday!---
Good morning! Hot here, no rain in sight. Going to the dentist this morning. Not a good morning. LOLPaula, thanks for the info. Guess I got confused about the Calif. eagles.Megan....porn on the blog. Shame on you!Enjoyed the discussion on the hummingbirds. Our daughter when in the 7th grade did a science project on whether hummingbirds would be attracted to artificial sweeteners in the water. No, they aren't! She won first place in the Regional Science Fair zoology division.
Hey Paula:) Aad LIsa has a link to the latest info on the Norfolk eaglet on the BWE page.
MORNIN' PAULA!----I so enjoy reading LISA'S blog & looking at the pictures!!----She's COOL!!!
Norma, the East River Mountain Overlook is a beautiful site too in Bluefield.
Buddy UpdateUPDATE: July 10 2008, 8amby Dr. Dave McRuer, Director of Veterinary Medicine at the Wildlife Center of VirginiaOn July 8, I took pictures of the eaglet's beak to send to Dr. Avery Bennett for review before surgery [scheduled for July 12 at the Wildlife Center]. The lesion was very dry, much reduced in size, and certainly didn't appear to be giving the bird any problems. After a careful review of the images, Dr. Bennett outlined his surgical plan to debulk the lesion and then to decide on the best method of closing the resulting "hole" in the side of the beak. Options to straighten the beak would then be considered. On July 9, when the Center's veterinary staff went to examine the eaglet, they found that the lesion had fallen off on its own - it was nowhere to be found! The eagle's immune system was obviously doing its job and taken care of the lesion on its own. Underneath the spot where the mass had been was a beautiful bed of granulation tissue, indicating both the end of the mass and recovery by the body.We took new x-rays of the bird's head to determine the status of the internal mass. Although soft tissue doesn't show up incredibly well with this modality (hence the original trip to Augusta Medical Center for the MRI), we could not find any trace of the internal lesion. All in all, great news for the eagle. The next step is to determine what to do with the crooked beak. I've brought Dr. Bennett up-to-date on the latest news about the mass and have been chatting with him about various options. These would include a tension device to bring the beak back into alignment; shaping the beak under general anesthesia and then continuing to keep it short in order to reduce the deviation in the beak; or doing nothing at all surgically and continuing supportive care (feeding) to see if the deviation in the beak will correct itself. Dr. Bennett will be traveling to Virginia later this week as planned.Whatever technique is used, full correction of the beak will ultimately depend on symmetrical growth of the keratin beak from the growth plate. If that growth plate has been permanently damaged, the beak may continue to have altered growth for the rest of the bird's life. This may be a viable option for a captive bird, but certainly not for a wild one. Time will tell.
Norma, at noon on Fridays they have a Concert in the Square series at Chicory Square uptown. They have a big flea market on Saturdays in the big blue parking building uptown. Other than that, I don't have a clue.
WELL, YOU WANT TO TALK ABOUT MIRACLES! BUDDY IS DEFINITELY A MIRACLE! WOW!!!!
MORNIN' LOLLY!---Will be thinking of you this am----REMEMBER---to stick your finger nail into your arm & it helps!!!---Ask SUZANNE--I made a believer out of her!!

Missing Wanda ???
Good morning everyone. Great news about Buddy. Maybe surgery will not be required now.
Thanks for the update on Buddy....Eagle prayers do work!!! ( :Good morning Jo and Loretta ( :Hope Lolly you feel better. Here's thinking of Wanda.....Relighting Buddy's candle for beak...
Great pic there Mits! Thought I might see it on here after his b-day yesterday! Love it
Good Morning Red ( : Hope you are making arrangement to come in Oct to Open House...
Mema Jo, I made 3 pineapple upside down cakes for our family reunion and dumped 2 of em in the floor, half of each one of em. The scrambled mess that was left was some of the best I have had. Everyone at the reunion gobbled it up before the whole cake. I figure it is no worse than a honey bun for breakfast.
My hummers are feisty out here this morning.
Sissy - even better then a honey bun!Flippin' cakes can be tricky! I've lost a few of my angel food cakes!
Hello Jo, Dana, Red and Naturenut:) Hey Jo- I did put some pictures up last night on my blog for you- did you see them?
Sissy - Dump cake! Great Eats!Megan - HP moths! Have to laugh at the walnut tree flower garden!
Megan I just got finished looking at the "jungle"....why your flowers are beautiful.I couldn't decide which ones I like best. So I just decided ALL OF THE PLANTS..Those Moths are awesome pics. Thank you for sharing ( :
NORMA----I only see 3 or 4 donkeys...( :
MORNING'---DANA---JO---NATURENUT & RED EAGLE!!!---WONDERFUL NEWS ABOUT BUDDY!!!----
Thanks:) the walnut garden was created becaue the hole left in the ground was collecting water and we didn't want mosquitoes breeding in it. And I had about 20 cardinal climber vines that were tangled together and I couldn't get them apart, so we shoved then into that huge hole all together.
THANKS BLUEFIELD GALS!!---Those are GREAT IDEAS!!---SHARON spends most weekends at flea markets--& KIDS will love the concerts---& scenic views!!!----THANKS!!!!!
Parent eagle in at Lake Washington
Megan - I looked at all of them at least twice late last night! All that hard labor you put into your garden turns into a beautiful array of colors and fragrances! Lynne (I think) had a Lunar Moth a couple of blogs back. It was dead when she found it. The moths of which you have the pictures - did you touch them. They looked furry..
GERMAN STORKS---were banded 6/27 ---named FINJA & APOLL!!---Have been examined---seem to be in good health!---THAT'S A GOOD THING!!
DANA---Must be the time of day!!---Every time I have checked before---there were a pace of donkeys feeding!!!-----ho!
Wow does LISA have a lot of neat and interesting things to see and read about on her Opsrey Page....You MUSTif haven't GO and SEE wonderful thank you Lisa ( : ( :
Eaglet in the nest!
I didn't touch them because I didn't want them to leave- I had never seen that type of moth before- the female arrived first, and then the male showed up- we were on the deck and realized there were lots of these moths flying around in the air above us,I guess she was attracting them to mate.
We have a visitor!!
First one I have seen today!
YEP!!---There is an EAGLET!!---But SHARON---I don't see a spot--do you???
It's a little early for me to be making plans for the Oct visit Dana. I was disappointed I couldn't make it in June.
Norma, I think you get the facial today!!
RED EAGLE---If you plan to come to visit---the Oct. date is best!!---One can go to the EAGLE NEST & tour the NCTC!!---It is a beautiful place!! they bring in wild life shows, etc.----I am always teasing STEVE that I would pay to work there!----ho!--Ask GLO or VICKY!!---VICKY has come every year!!!

Our nest has been MT for a little while now!
Okay, now to recount the last few minutes at my house. Mattie came upstairs and said she heard something squeaking in the ceiling. The next thing I know, my dogs have chased something into Justin's room. I go to the door and lo and behold, there is a squirrel on the bed. I got the dogs out. Went downstairs and the flue cover had been knocked off and there was another one behind the gun cabinet. Becky's daddy, Andrew and Tom were down there, closed up the hole and got that squirrel out. Don't know if the one in Justin's room has escaped out the open window yet or not. HEART PUMPING EXPERIENCE!
Good grief Sharon, you need the eagle cane!!
ROFLMBO......that must have been a site...
Ain't no doubt, Mits. I was too chicken to go out there. I bet a squirrel could do some major damage to a person.
I would had stopped at the gun cabinet...to make sure he never came back in;)
told Sharon I bet they were like that movie with Chevy Chase with the squirrel, Christmas Vacation.
OMG.......I LOVED THAT SCENE....LOL
Now, ladies, it was not all that. It was a sight though, that is for sure. Now Peedab is still trying to get behind the gun cabinet, guess she still smells it there. I think the one in Justin room's is gone but not before it got a little bit of the guinea pig food! :)
HEY!! Who you callin' a lady, pal?!?
Okay, so maybe I lost it a little bit, lady and scuzzbag!
lol Squirrels Take Over House in Bluefield! Love it! So it took 3 grown men to get the one small bushy tail out of the house and ..... Justin may have a surprise when he climbs into bed tonight!
Front page news in the Bluefield Daily Telegraph in the morning!!
so, like, um, how's the guinea pig???
Pearl, the guinea pig, is fine. The food bag was open and the squirrel got into that.
maybe your neighbor from Baltimore sent them over Sharon;(
ok, off to the sun deck for awhile:)
Hello all!Hope everyone is having a good day. Trying to do some housecleaning today...one of my favorite chores! LOL--I really don't mind!Sissy--you made my mouth water! I made a P-UD cake about a month ago...was so-o-o good! Had a bit of trouble w/ the "dump" but managed to keep it all on the plate! Megan--great pics. And I didn't know, either, that the sugar water doesn't have to be boiled!! TY--that makes for one less thing to do!Glad you had a good trip, Margy! And thanks from me, too, for your service at the VA!
So, Mits in on the sun deck and I have been in the dentist's chair. Guess no one promised fair. Now I have to have a root canal, life definitely is not fair!!!Trying to picture all the squirrels and yelling. ha!Will try the fingernail in the arm bit at another visit.New message from Chrissy, Ocean Blue way ahead. Guess we are all alike! Hey, I think we knew that already.Hurray for Buddy....all those prayers were answered. Still want that beak straight so he can fly wild and free!!!
Sharon, Last summer I went into the "stove room" in the basement and noticed a lot of real fine ash all over the outside of the stove door. Didn't pay any real attention to it. Then, for some reason, a few days later, I was in there again and opened the stove and found a big dead one laying in the ashes. It must have come down the chimney, gotten through the baffles and into the stove and couldn't get out. I imagine it frenzied itself so bad and pulverized the ashes so fine that it probably inhaled so much of it that it died. Strange thing was...never heard anything; doxie never noticed anything, and thank goodness, it hadn't started to smell yet!
Link to Buddy's Candles
My pc is freezing upGoing to clean it upBBL
Have we heard from Wanda today?? It's not like her to go AWOL like some of us sometimes do.
OMG!! How funny is that. You go Squirrel. That is absolutely too good.
Can someone tell me how to put a link to a photo on here. Must be different than forums. Thanks.
ROTFIt appears we have a rodent among us!!!! TEE HEE I love it!
When is the open house in October?
Oh great, now the squirrel is loose in the blog...Sharon!!! The NCTC open house is October 18 from 10-4.
I told her she didn't get em all, Megan. She wouldn't listen to me.
Open house is Saturday October 17th.
No, Saturday October 18th.
Squirrelly Sharon--you are too funny!!
Well I was close. lol
Yep! close but no cigar..as they say...
Good, I can't stand them.
HA! HA!! what no smelly cigars for you?? Yucky things those cigars.
Now Mattie will not go downstairs by herself.
That was just too funny!
I did smoke cigaretts for 55 years. Have been off now for almost a year. Pat my back. lol
Heck yeah, Red. You deserve a pat on the back. That is some hard stuff. I will have 10 years no cigs in November. I am so grateful to be free of them nasty things.
Parent and Baby at Barton Cove...Sweeeeeet !
That's great, Red. You deserve a pat on the back for that. Sharon, is that really you, or the squirrel?? Poor Mattie- I'm sure that freaked her out. Dumb ole squirrels.
Soon as I say it, Mother disappears...
This is really me. I wasn't the squirrel the first time! :)
OK, just checking, can't be too careful, those squirrels are sneaky.. going back outside for a while. bbl-
ROTFLMBO!!!!! That is too funny! Now the squirrel has gotten to the computer! I knew this place was NUTS!
ROFLMBO Hey there Mr Squirrel You better not let Mattie see you!!!She'll have those dogs hunt you down! Tooooooooo funny! You best put a trail of nuts from behind the gun cabinet to the kitchen door.....
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! O_O !!!! !!!!!!! /@ @\!! !!!!!! \ x / !!!!!!/ m !m !!!!/ __ | !!!!|/ \__ !!!\______\When do squirrels chase People?........When they think they are nuts!!
Sharon - That's hilarious, love the avatar!Sissy's squirrel is probably related to the one that lived in the ceiling in my bathroom between me and the upstairs apartment for 18 months! Critter guy finally live-trapped it and got it outta there - just about lost my mind over that one, and squirrelly ruined the ceiling....I stopped putting bird feeders out over that whole fiasco....
Lolly - you have to call it as you see it! lol
Well, that didn't come out quite ritht! But you get the picture!
Lolly, what a great pic!!
Well that's what I get for speedreading, sorry Sissy and Sharon, I see it is SHARON'S squirrel.
I am headed for dinner BBL **I have not heard from Wanda..
I just love how much fun we can have on here with whatever life hands us!
Actually, it was 2 lovely squirrels in my house today.
I missed a fly out at Barton's cove. Babe was snuggled down in the nest and I was lulled into thinking he was going to stick around awhile!
Barton Cove Eaglet is back...in the branch above nest, you can see its shadow - Way Cool
Sharon, is that Squirrelock Holmes;)?
I apologize, I should know that as soon as I post something the image changes...shadow has disapeared at Barton - maybe that is because the sun is behind the clouds....I'll behave myself now...
Time for me to get off...my sister will be here soon.Bye Squirrely friends!!!!
Hope I didn't incite a RIOT by mixing up the two Double E girls...tee heexo
I can't help myself - the sun is out and the Eaglet shadow is back at Barton Cove...
Everybody has always gotten these 2 sisters mixed up!
Sounds Good Squirrel-Eyed Sharon, that way you can get into mischief and blame it on sister dear !!!!( And I suppose, vice versa....)xo
By the way, does anyone have Live Feed?
Love the sneaky squirrel!Heading home, catch ya'll later!!
Magpie - RP is still down. I did email Steve today to let him know!
Okey-Doke, thanks, Paula, I am not complaining...just wondered if my computer was conspiring against me again....Catch ya' later Paula. Tomorrow is FRIDAY !!!!Just saw Solo fly up onto a branch and disappear, and maybe he flew farther out now.....it's quiet there..
Regarding my volunteer time at the VA Center: The Veterans are like our Eagles, symbols of freedom and integrity. Without them, what would we have? I have two nephews in the military and I promised them I would do this in support of their active status. Both have been to Iraq a few times, one's a Helicopter pilot in the marines, the other is a Navy Seal. They are both in California now, one in San Diego at Miramar, the other in Monterey. Thanks to all of you for your encouraging remarks. These visits are a true blessing in my life.xo xo
WE HAVE A MOUNTAINEER !!
And a 90-second refresh..please stay little one so others can see you...get away from that launch pad !
That is one beautiful and stately "Eaglet" - hard for me to believe he has honored a request from a mere Magpie to stick around awhile...BUT HE OR SHE IS READY AND RARIN' TO GO !!!COSTUME LADY: You are giving us heart failure...looking forward to seeing your name on here soon.I'm headed out to Swanging Bradge to see if I can find some Beaver or Muskrat action..TTFN xoxox Take Care, All xoxo
Well Well, NOW TWO MOUNTAINEERS....HOW CAN I LEAVE NOW ???
Well, last night the battery light came on in the car. Today I took it to AutoZone to get the alternator checked. It is bad and now I can't get the car back home! What a day!
Well, Magpie, that is quite a memory you have!
blame it on the squirrel, probably broke your battery
I bet you are right Mits!!
Okay, this squirrely is out of here. BBL!
Just got back on comments to read. You probably already know but EAGLE ALERT OUR NEST 30 SEC REFRESHWhat a pretty site! ( :
JUVIE ALERT AT OUR NEST STILL THERE
Margy the Veterans do really appreciate it. I worked VA Baltimore as a Ward Clerk. They just loved visits. Even people sending cards or coming in to help them send a letter out.
Dana,Wonder if VA has stopped allowing cards to "any Vet" like the military hospitals have stopped mail to "any soldier"???
We just got home from Outback dinner & I see a Big Baby in the nest!!!
