PART II:

My trip to Northern Virginia and Maryland area was great, got to meet two new great-nephews and had some quality time with two older sisters.
I saw some red-tailed or red-shouldered hawks on the way, also some vultures but I pretended they were eagles ! The cidadas are out down there, and I heard some House Wrens, and saw some Eastern Phoebes while there.
Everyone on the highway was well-behaved, and I got a downpour coming through Rockville and Gaithersburg.

This is truly an Eagle Family we have: all the encouraging remarks, support, fun things, it is so nice to read through two days worth of visiting amongst the Momsters and Dadsters....

floralgirl said...

Thanks Magpie, thanks for doing what you do at the VA- it's so important. Hello Sissy, Norma, Mits, Dave and SHaron!

floralgirl said...

Norma, when it is warm, you should change the sugar water in your feeder every two or three days, it will spoil and then they won't drink it.

normabyrd said...

MARGY---Did you check those 'darling little chimney swifts'?----CUTIES!!!

MITS said...

take your cane out with you Norma, and when you see a wasp...slap him silly;)

floralgirl said...

It was recently discovered that bees and wasps are attracted to the color yellow. Since many hummingbird feeders have yellow plastic "flowers" or other parts, try removing such parts or painting them red before hanging your feeder in the spring - once bees learn where food is, they fly right back to the hive to tell all their friends, so avoiding their attention up front works best.
If wasps persist, first try moving the feeder, even just a few feet; insects are not very smart, and will assume the food source is gone forever. They may never find it in its new location, while the hummers will barely notice that it was moved. If that doesn't work, take the feeder down for a day, or until you stop seeing wasps looking for it. You'll see hummers looking for it, too, but they won't give up nearly as soon as the wasps

MITS said...

man those bees and wasps are smart little buggers;)

MITS said...

I wonder who interviewed the bees and wasp to learn that info;)?

normabyrd said...

Thanks MEGAN!---Last year was the first year to have a feeder---now I have 2---Thanks--

normabyrd said...

WHOA!!! HELEN---did your MOM never tell you about the BIRDS & the BEES --- & WASPS???? ho!

floralgirl said...

#@*#@* -got shocked by the electric fence when I was hanging the last feeder- ow... good thing hubby isn't here, he'd be rolling on ground laughing- he's always asking me to check and see if the fence is working.. yep- it is..

MITS said...

omg, you poor thing.....

floralgirl said...

It ain't that bad, always scares me more than anything.. last fall hubby gave me the fence tester which shows how much shock the fence is putting out- and I can't find it- so he says I have to be his fence tester... ha ha- he usually gets shocked way more than me, and yep, I usaully laugh at him when it happens..

floralgirl said...

Here's the hummer food recipe I've always used, Norma. Use one part ordinary white cane sugar to four parts water.
It's not necessary to boil the water. The microorganisms that cause fermentation don't come from the water; they are transported to the feeder on hummingbird bills.
Store unused syrup in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.
This mixture approximates the average sucrose content (about 21%) of the flowers favored by North American hummingbirds, without being so sweet it attracts too many insects.

July 9

Tai Shan turned three today! He enjoyed a special fruitcicle made of water and gelatin in the shape of a three. He also received two tiered fruitcicles made of water, bamboo leaves, and various fruits and vegetables. Thanks to everyone who came to the Zoo today to celebrate the big day, and to the hundreds of you who have sent him birthday wishes online.

Get Tai Shan birthday wallpaper for your computer with your donation to the Giant Panda Conservation Fund.

Thanks also to hundreds of donors who are helping the Wolong Giant Panda Breeding Center recover from earthquake damage. We have received more than $55,000 and are grateful for your generosity. This fundraising initiative will end July 15, so if you have not yet made a contribution, please donate today.

floralgirl said...

Yep, I'm okay, just a little zap and then a shout from me, no biggie. I hate electric fence, and that is is all around my gardens, but it is the only way we have been able to keep the deer out- and sometimes they get through anyway. www.hummingbirds.net has a lot of good info about hummers.

normabyrd said...

floralgirl said...

I don't think it hurts if you bring the water to a slight boil, it seems to help the sugar dissolve, I've seen it witten both ways, so whatever works for you is good. The most important thing is do not add red food coloring to the mix, and change your food often.

Enjoyed the discussion on the hummingbirds. Our daughter when in the 7th grade did a science project on whether hummingbirds would be attracted to artificial sweeteners in the water. No, they aren't! She won first place in the Regional Science Fair zoology division.

Buddy Update

UPDATE: July 10 2008, 8am
by Dr. Dave McRuer, Director of Veterinary Medicine at the Wildlife Center of Virginia

On July 8, I took pictures of the eaglet's beak to send to Dr. Avery Bennett for review before surgery [scheduled for July 12 at the Wildlife Center]. The lesion was very dry, much reduced in size, and certainly didn't appear to be giving the bird any problems. After a careful review of the images, Dr. Bennett outlined his surgical plan to debulk the lesion and then to decide on the best method of closing the resulting "hole" in the side of the beak. Options to straighten the beak would then be considered.

On July 9, when the Center's veterinary staff went to examine the eaglet, they found that the lesion had fallen off on its own - it was nowhere to be found! The eagle's immune system was obviously doing its job and taken care of the lesion on its own. Underneath the spot where the mass had been was a beautiful bed of granulation tissue, indicating both the end of the mass and recovery by the body.

We took new x-rays of the bird's head to determine the status of the internal mass. Although soft tissue doesn't show up incredibly well with this modality (hence the original trip to Augusta Medical Center for the MRI), we could not find any trace of the internal lesion. All in all, great news for the eagle.

The next step is to determine what to do with the crooked beak. I've brought Dr. Bennett up-to-date on the latest news about the mass and have been chatting with him about various options. These would include a tension device to bring the beak back into alignment; shaping the beak under general anesthesia and then continuing to keep it short in order to reduce the deviation in the beak; or doing nothing at all surgically and continuing supportive care (feeding) to see if the deviation in the beak will correct itself. Dr. Bennett will be traveling to Virginia later this week as planned.

Whatever technique is used, full correction of the beak will ultimately depend on symmetrical growth of the keratin beak from the growth plate. If that growth plate has been permanently damaged, the beak may continue to have altered growth for the rest of the bird's life. This may be a viable option for a captive bird, but certainly not for a wild one. Time will tell.

Mema Jo, I made 3 pineapple upside down cakes for our family reunion and dumped 2 of em in the floor, half of each one of em. The scrambled mess that was left was some of the best I have had. Everyone at the reunion gobbled it up before the whole cake. I figure it is no worse than a honey bun for breakfast.

Okay, now to recount the last few minutes at my house. Mattie came upstairs and said she heard something squeaking in the ceiling. The next thing I know, my dogs have chased something into Justin's room. I go to the door and lo and behold, there is a squirrel on the bed. I got the dogs out. Went downstairs and the flue cover had been knocked off and there was another one behind the gun cabinet. Becky's daddy, Andrew and Tom were down there, closed up the hole and got that squirrel out. Don't know if the one in Justin's room has escaped out the open window yet or not. HEART PUMPING EXPERIENCE!

Good grief Sharon, you need the eagle cane!!

MITS said...

Eagle-Eyed's Sissy said...

Ain't no doubt, Mits. I was too chicken to go out there. I bet a squirrel could do some major damage to a person.

Now, ladies, it was not all that. It was a sight though, that is for sure. Now Peedab is still trying to get behind the gun cabinet, guess she still smells it there. I think the one in Justin room's is gone but not before it got a little bit of the guinea pig food! :)

Megan--great pics. And I didn't know, either, that the sugar water doesn't have to be boiled!! TY--that makes for one less thing to do!
Glad you had a good trip, Margy! And thanks from me, too, for your service at the VA!

New message from Chrissy, Ocean Blue way ahead. Guess we are all alike! Hey, I think we knew that already.

Hurray for Buddy....all those prayers were answered. Still want that beak straight so he can fly wild and free!!!

hedgie said...

Sharon,
Last summer I went into the "stove room" in the basement and noticed a lot of real fine ash all over the outside of the stove door. Didn't pay any real attention to it. Then, for some reason, a few days later, I was in there again and opened the stove and found a big dead one laying in the ashes. It must have come down the chimney, gotten through the baffles and into the stove and couldn't get out. I imagine it frenzied itself so bad and pulverized the ashes so fine that it probably inhaled so much of it that it died. Strange thing was...never heard anything; doxie never noticed anything, and thank goodness, it hadn't started to smell yet!

Sissy's squirrel is probably related to the one that lived in the ceiling in my bathroom between me and the upstairs apartment for 18 months! Critter guy finally live-trapped it and got it outta there - just about lost my mind over that one, and squirrelly ruined the ceiling....I stopped putting bird feeders out over that whole fiasco....

Lolly - you have to call it as you see it! lol

I missed a fly out at Barton's cove. Babe was snuggled down in the nest and I was lulled into thinking he was going to stick around awhile!

magpie said...

Barton Cove Eaglet is back...in the branch above nest, you can see its shadow - Way Cool

MITS said...

Sharon, is that Squirrelock Holmes;)?

magpie said...

I apologize, I should know that as soon as I post something the image changes...shadow has disapeared at Barton - maybe that is because the sun is behind the clouds....I'll behave myself now...

Lolly said...

Time for me to get off...my sister will be here soon.

Bye Squirrely friends!!!!

magpie said...

Hope I didn't incite a RIOT by mixing up the two Double E girls...

Regarding my volunteer time at the VA Center: The Veterans are like our Eagles, symbols of freedom and integrity. Without them, what would we have?
I have two nephews in the military and I promised them I would do this in support of their active status. Both have been to Iraq a few times, one's a Helicopter pilot in the marines, the other is a Navy Seal. They are both in California now, one in San Diego at Miramar, the other in Monterey.
Thanks to all of you for your encouraging remarks. These visits are a true blessing in my life.

That is one beautiful and stately "Eaglet" - hard for me to believe he has honored a request from a mere Magpie to stick around awhile...BUT HE OR SHE IS READY AND RARIN' TO GO !!!

COSTUME LADY: You are giving us heart failure...looking forward to seeing your name on here soon.

I'm headed out to Swanging Bradge to see if I can find some Beaver or Muskrat action..

Margy the Veterans do really appreciate it. I worked VA Baltimore as a Ward Clerk. They just loved visits. Even people sending cards or coming in to help them send a letter out.

hedgie said...

Dana,
Wonder if VA has stopped allowing cards to "any Vet" like the military hospitals have stopped mail to "any soldier"???
