I reported last night when I got home Norma, nothing really new, still in a holding pattern, at times she exhibits signs of nesting licking, cradling, and other times nothing...looks like now since she is off cam, might be trying to do an ultrasound.....I did post info on what happens if there is a birth on blog the other night, that info is on the panda page......they will keep her OFF CAM if birth is imminent

Thursday, July 24, 2008 9:34:00 AM

ANSWER TO NORMA'S QUESTION

eagle-eyed sharon said...

Mits, why do they keep her OFF CAM if birth is imminent?

MITS said...

WANDA the donut man died....ate too many donuts

Costume Lady said...

GOOD MORNING EVERYONE...
I smelled doughnuts and thought I'd check out the blog and see who has them. I love chocolate doughnuts with chocolate icing. I haven't had one in many years.
SISSY...I wonder what ever happened to the man who was in that commercial saying, "GOTTA MAKE THE DOUGHNUTS, GOTTA MAKE THE DOUGHNUTS"?

Brought this over from last thread:

MITS said...

contractual reasons, Sharon. don't know who has the rights this time, Animal Planet had it when Tai was born, it makes perfect sense to me, the zoo must raise money for all the work that they do...

Costume Lady said...

Helen, that ocean breeze really make you sharp! LOL

Eagle-Eye's Sissy said...

I know Wanda. That is what I say all the time when I have to get my rear to work, time to make the donuts. But a good chocolate, cream filled longjohn does sound good right now.

Eagle-Eye's Sissy said...

Oh yeah, thanks for the new threat Steve. Thanks for hollering for us Deb.

MITS said...

lol......is Steven threatening us now, Sissy????

MITS said...

we can send, Norma to whack him with her cane.

eagle-eyed sharon said...

Well, our Mits is sure on top of it this morning! :)

That makes sense about filming the birth, I just couldn't figure out why. Tai is so flaked out in the grotto and it looks like Tian is under the mist! Oh, that would be a good movie - GIANT PANDA IN THE MIST!

Costume Lady said...

The Panda situation is no different than Angelina and Brad; no photos till the highest bidder comes through. Like Helen said, they have to make their mony somehow for the upkeep of the Zoo.
I don't like what the Pitts are doing with the photo rights to their babies...they are being exploited. The money is SUPPOSEDLY going to charity, but still, I think it is rediculous. JMO

Costume Lady said...

SHARON...you are very poetic this morning..I like that title.

Deb said...

I was wondering what Steven is threatening us for, too!

I had a short night. First thunder and lightening woke me up, then a drunk, obscene phone caller decided I shouldn't get any sleep. The dummy didn't think about caller ID, so I have his number if he does it again. I hope last night was just the alcohol. He was calling from Arkansas, I wonder how he picked me to call. I unplugged my upstairs phones, but I could hear the phone in the basement keep ringing for about 1/2 hour. If he calls again, I will report him.

MITS said...

yes I'm in total agreement with the zoo....you know there are a lot of people that just have to break the news first all the time, I'm sure they don't need to have it on you tube 30 seconds after the birth

Eagle-Eye's Sissy said...

omg, not threat Steve, thread. Sorry!! You are certainly not a threat to us!!

MITS said...

the National Zoo like the rest of the Smithsonian Museums is FREE, but you do pay for parking unless you are a member of FONZ or a volunteer

normabyrd said...

GOOD MORNIN'STEVE---DEB--SHARON--HELEN & WANDA!!---THANKS STEVE FOR THE NEW THREAD!!

MITS said...

man I was scared there for awhile..Sissy

eagle-eyed sharon said...

Hey Mits, can I get any special "perks" for going to the zoo as a volunteer's friend? :)

MITS said...

lol.....I don't get any special perks as a volunteer, except free parking....what day and time are you going?

normabyrd said...

OH HELEN!!---I watch ANIMAL PLANET every day!!----I hope they have the same deal as with TAI!!!---I HAVE LEARNED SO MUCH from AP & NATURE TV!!! --- Lots of us folks will never get to the NZOO---

eagle-eyed sharon said...

THOUGHT I WOULD POST THIS AGAIN!!
What to Expect if Mei Is Expecting
We wanted to let our pandas' fans know our plans for the panda cams and exhibit if Mei Xiang gives birth to a cub this year. The web cams will be turned off if we believe a birth is imminent. We will turn them back on soon after the birth but we cannot say exactly when. (We may think a birth is imminent and later learn that Mei experienced a pseudopregnancy.) If Mei has a cub, the indoor panda habitat will be closed for several weeks to months. The outdoor portion of the Fujifilm Giant Panda Habitat will be open to the public. We will work as expeditiously as possible to share all the news with you.

normabyrd said...

July 23

Mei Xiang did not show any pregnancy behaviors from yesterday afternoon until this morning, when she dragged bamboo into the den at 4:45 a.m. and spent a minute nest building. Then she manipulated (licked, chewed, and held) the Kong toy for about four minutes. Mei spent most of today in her den. Another pregnancy-related behavior she exhibited today was some brief ano-genital licking. This behavior, when it lasts 15 minutes or longer, is associated with impending birth.

The next bout of behavior began at 8:25, when Mei spent 28 minutes engaged in nest building—carrying bamboo, moving the hay, and pawing at the floor. Of course, she also ate some of the bamboo, which contributes to the longer time frame. About two hours later, she had eight minutes of paw licking.

In the early afternoon, Mei did one and a half minutes of ano-genital licking then ate bamboo. She was quite restless for the next half hour. During this time, she nipple licked, on and off, for a total of seven minutes, and also spent time breaking and staring at a piece of bamboo. She paw licked for a minute and ended this restless period with a brief ano-genital lick before falling asleep.

Mei Xiang left her den at 3:20 and shifted onto the keeper area patio to eat produce and biscuits verrry slowly. She urinated at 4 p.m. Later on, she was resting on the rocks in exhibit three, which has been her pattern over the past few days. These behaviors correlate nicely with the downward trajectory of her progestin levels. We should hopefully know something soon.

MITS said...

July 24

A urine sample from yesterday afternoon contained a progestin value of about 74 ng/mg Cr. This concentrations is higher than the value obtained on July 22, which had a progestin value of about 58 ng/mg Cr.

The continued low values indicate the luteal phase and secondary rise are nearing an end, however an end may not be reached for several more days.

MITS said...

and that is the lastest as I know it about Mei.....looks like today she has done nothing of interest for any period of time, except sleep

paula eagleholic said...

Update from O.W.L. re: Delta Dan:

He's doing fine and seems to have no injuries. He's a bit on the slim side and they will fatten him up before his release. His flight feathers are not yet fully in and that's why he can't fly very high for very long. Therefore he was not a difficult capture and Bev was able to grab him. He has small feet which is typical of a male eagle and he is smaller in overall size than the female, Delta Dawn, which remains in the nest. The folks at O.W.L. have been watching the eaglets on our cam before Danny fell from the nest. They already knew that one was male and the other female.

wvgal_dana said...

Thanks Paula for the update on Delta Dan...Delta Dawn is resting in the partical nest.

July 24

Mei Xiang slept in exhibit three overnight again, as has been her recent routine. She had a brief bout of paw licking at around midnight and a second bout, lasting five minutes, at 1 a.m. There was a 15-minute nest-building session an hour later. She slept until 5 a.m. to resume paw licking for a few minutes, and then engaged in two more brief paw-licking sessions soon after.

She spent a couple of minutes nest building at 8 a.m., and had a 20-second bout of nipple licking during this activity. An hour later, she moved out to the exhibit again. At 9:30 she got up and urinated (a fresh sample!) and cooperated with us for an ultrasound exam. She was moderately alert. She consumed half of her biscuits and most of her pear. Mei also engaged in a play and scent-anointing session! She did not overlook the generous proportion of gel leftover on her belly, along with the remaining pear. What a sticky mess she created rolling the pear between her belly and chin while managing to rub her ears, all at the same time.

This afternoon Mei repeated the paw-licking behavior for a total of eight minutes over five sessions. No ano-genital licking was seen today. Mei is keeping us guessing and adding a whole new meaning, with all her individual nuances, to pregnancy behaviors. She is “consistently inconsistent,” as one of her keepers so perfectly stated.

Glo had said she is up on a hill - flooding may not affect her. 68° is ok without AC... It will be good to hear from her - soon I hope!

CONSISTENTLY INCONSISTENT That is a perfect description of Mei Xiang the Giant Panda Bear.

MITS: Inside the Panda House - can you see into the birthing room?

MITS said...

only when the cam is on it, Jo, it is too hard to see it when you are there, and if she does give birth, the house will be closed, and I'm sure they will rope us off from the area, even if we have to go into the cam room

Yes Jo I don't think flooding was any problem for Glo. She said she is up on a hill.
Glad the temp. wasn't too extreme..but don't know about humidity there.

Just hope Glo did not have a full freezer before this happened. Most of the food would have to be pitched for sure! I don't think flooding is a problem at this time. It was mostly wind -100 mph that did the damage, although they had rain too. I believe she told us in the past that it gets quite humid there too. It will really be good to hear from her.

Mits, I hope Mei stops teasing everyone soon! It sure would be nice to see a new little sweetie!

Iris, at this stage of the game, with the anticipation of her going into estrus, AI, hormone levels, pregnancy, behaviors, all of this stuff going on since January, I'm sure the keepers and doctors and scientist, would love to know something, even if it is a false pregnancy, which they are hoping it is not.

For Paula and whoever else was wondering about the "other AU Peregrine site."

It looks like the birds haven't returned there yet though.
